BOSSIP Exclusive: Common Talks Lending His Voice To Ava Duvernay’s 13th, Becoming More Active In Black Matters

Common Talks 13th , Social Activism Common is really living up to his original rap name “Common Sense” these days. The rapper’s activism anthem “Letter to the Free” is the end-title track on 13th and has already been nominated for a 2016 Critics’ Choice Documentary Award for “Best Song in a Documentary.” The song’s lyrics tackle America’s racial divide and reflect the film’s focus on the prison system as a new form of slavery in America. It’s also featured on Common’s own latest album, “Black America Again.” Take a listen: We caught up with Common to chat about the single, his invovlement with the project, and how his affiliation with Ava Duvernay movies have shaped his musical direction and activism… What made you want to become involved with 13th in the way that you have? 13th hit me in a way…it was like I know some of this, I didn’t know about this ALEC stuff, I didn’t even know the 13th amendment said that — I’ll be honest — I didn’t even realize that the 13th amendment said that if you’re a “criminal,” you can [legally] be a slave. So all that information, I’m still continuing to learn. It’s been an awakening for the country. This is part of American history and the same way we teach our kids about the people who came to revolutionize this country, we need to teach them about slavery too. We need to teach them about slavery and how that ties into where we are now. If they can see that, they would be able to put two and two together and start functioning differently. Your name has become more and more synonymous with “wokeness” in a sense since your involvement in Selma a few years back. How do you feel that movie experience prepared you for projects like 13th and even placing some of the messages you have in your latest album? Well, Selma was definitely one of the moments that changed my life forever. One of the greatest experiences of my life. One of the reasons is being introduced to the Civil Rights Movement in another way. It’s more than just researching and reading it in textbooks. You’re talking to people. Ambassador Andrew Young came and had a talk the first day of our rehearsal and said “What are you willing to die for? Live for that.” He said that was the whole mentality of the people of the Civil Rights movement. “We’re willing to die for freedom, so we’re going to live for freedom. We’re dedicating each day toward that.” One of the practical things I was able to connect with was the fact that each and every person that was a part of that movement, each day they contributed something towards fighting for that freedom. They dedicated their lives to saying “okay, some part of my day will be dedicated towards that.” I felt like, I have been doing things and putting my spirit and energy into wanting to see change, but I had to do more. I had to contribute my days into being more active and more present — not only in the music. So then, aside from the music, what ways did you begin pursuing to be more active? That made me think about things, and question how can I use my creativity not only towards the art that I’m doing that is socio-political work, but how can I use my mind towards these communities. So that made me start going into communities and start to listen and made me more political than I had ever been. Before I would think — “Okay, I need to vote for the president.” And “I’ll vote for this person I know about.” But now, I need to know. If I have a problem with police injustice and police killing Black people, I need to know what things I can do policy-wise to help change things. Who is the person that selects the police chief? Who is the person that sets up the training for the policemen in this state and that state? Not that I’m going to know everything, but even if it’s connecting with groups that do know, so that I can get that information and see how I can contribute my name, celebrity, whatever access I have, and creativity towards that change. What action has 13th pushed you to take? With this movie, I’ll put it this way: If I’m going to talk it and rap it, I’ll have to be it. So I will be at somebody’s prison — just building with brothers and sisters about getting out and what life will be like getting out and trying to provide help in that way. I even realized this morning from Kim Fox, the State’s Attorney of Chicago — she comes from Cabrini-Green in Chicago so she’s for the people, she comes from it — she says one of the biggest issues is, they don’t assist people when they’re about to get out of jail, so when they come out, they’re shocked. And it’s hard to get jobs, hard to get housing, you can’t vote in certain places, so then you feel second-class, and then you end up going back to that same cycle. So, if someone has been convicted of a crime, when they’re about to get out, when do we start training them to work on that? I want to help with figuring that out. Nice! Great to see a celeb taking his influence and really focusing on making a positive impact with it, right? Have YOU taken a listen to “Black America Again?” What did you think? Splash

‘All Eyez On Me’ Producer Strikes Back After John Singleton Disses 2Pac Film He Hasn’t Even Seen

John Singleton Disses Tupac Biopic Without Even Watching A Trailer We’re sure you guys remember a couple years back when John Singleton stepped down from his commitment to direct the upcoming 2Pac biopic ‘All Eyez On Me.’ Well If you haven’t heard yet, John Singleton took some serious shots at the movie during and after a panel at ComplexCon in L.A. this past weekend, despite revealing he hasn’t watched so much as a trailer for the project. The director told HipHopDX, “I haven’t watched it and I refuse to watch it,” Singleton tells HipHopDX. “I know that they f***ed it up so I’m not even trying to give it any attention.” During the panel, which was hosted by Deray McKesson, Singleton admitted that at one point he felt he was too close to Shakur to be involved: “I didn’t want to make it for many, many years,” he explained during the panel. “First of all, people wanted the story to be told, but I was so close to him. I was too close to tell the story of it. You have to remember, at first we had a working relationship and then a brotherhood.I saw other directors come on and something clicked in me saying I wanted to do it. I told the company if y’all muthafu**as want to do this, you gotta get the fu** out my face and let me do this movie.” Despite eventually stepping down from the director’s role, Singleton reveals he did come back onboard to help with the project later, as producers were ramping up the project: “I did the research which was talking to everyone around him who lived it and selectively piecing together their memories and my memories cause everyone wants to make Pac who they wanted them to be,” he recalled. “They want to make the Tupac story that involves them and not the Tupac story. I did a great script and I thought they were going to go forward with it, but because I’m so mouthy and opinionated, some people don’t like to work with a black man in Hollywood who has an opinion. I knew they weren’t going to make a good movie at all and they didn’t.” Ehhhh, this sounds real real real real personal. It seems crazy to just decide something is BAD without seeing it — or even seeing a trailer. Not only that but the trailers we’ve seen look fire and Benny Boom is a damn good director — we don’t really see him dropping the ball on this one. Hmmmm… So we reached out to a few friends in Hollywood and learned that while Singleton hasn’t seen the movie — several rappers HAVE and their reactions were nothing like Singleton’s. “Puffy has seen it. Kanye West has seen it. Snoop Dogg has seen it,” a source close to the project told BOSSIP. “They loved it. The Game saw it. Busta Rhymes was in tears when he saw it.” Well damn! (Side note, didn’t Busta act in “Higher Learning” for Singleton?) As it stands, looks like Singleton’s comments aren’t sitting too well with the film’s executive producer L.T. Hutton. Hit the flip for his comments.

Jersey Shore Cast: Where Are They Now?!

The cast of Jersey Shore is no longer going to the gym, tanning or doing laundry. At least not on television. What have Snooki, The Situation and others been up to in the six-plus years since Jersey Shore premiered on MTV? What do they look like now? Good questions! Let's find out…  1. Snooki Snooki is the mother of two children and the wife of a husband who had an account on Ashley Madison. While rumors of trouble in paradise have plagued her marriage to Jionni LaValle from the start, she insists all is well. In any case, she starred on one spinoff with JWOWW and confirmed in late 2015 that she’ll team with her friend again for a YouTube series titled “Moms With Attitude.” She is also richer than you’ll ever be, which is enough to make you depressed for humanity. 2. The Situation It’s been a slow but serious decline for the Sitch. In October 2012, Mike Sorrentino appeared in a PETA ad campaign promoting the spaying and neutering of pets. Two years later, he was charged with tax fraud and remains in pretty big trouble with the law. He’s also been in and out or rehab and various relationships. 3. Jenni “JWOWW” Farley As we said, she’ll follow up one spinoff with Snooki with another one. She got married to longtime love Roger Mathews in 2015 and welcomed a daughter last year. She also recently announced her second pregnancy. 4. Angelina Pivarnick In 2012, Pivarnick – the self-proclaimed Kim Kardashian of Staten Island and the MTV hit’s shortest-lived cast member – became the first Jersey Shore star to appear on Couples Therapy. That’s been about it for her. Her 15 minutes may at last be up. 5. Deena Nicole Cortese Did someone say Couples Therapy is a way to make a little money and get back in the spotlight?!? Cortese appeared on Season 5 of the VH1 series. 6. Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola Sammi finally split from Ronnie Magro in early 2014. Professionally, she stopped by Project Runway as a judge in 2013 and has barely been heard from since. View Slideshow

Rest In Power: New Project Allows Black People To Write Their Own Obituaries Before Cops Kill Them

New Project Allows Black People Write Their Own Obituaries The Black Obituary Project is a collection of pre-written obits to put a spotlight on the anti-Black violence and growing surge of police brutality. HuffPo recently featured the project’s creator on why he chose to convey his sentiments in this fashion: “Ja’han Elliot Jones, 24, was unarmed when shot and killed in conflict with local police officers,” his obituary reads. “His familiarity with the Black canon steered him into a potent state of unapologetic Blackness ― one in which the James Baldwins and Young Jeezy’s; the bell hookses and the Queen Bey’s; the Frantz Fanons and the Futures all occupied hollowed, cherished beautiful space in Jones’ identity.” “So often, we are killed and our photos are posted about but our stories are not,” Jones told The Huffington Post. “This grants black folks agency we’re often denied in death. We are telling our stories ― speaking of our triumphs and tragedies ― before anyone else attempts to do so for us.” Another obituary: Read more obits at the Black Obituary Project HERE .

Young Thug Said God Gave Him The Dress He Wore On The ‘Jeffery’ Album Cover

Apparently God May Have A Fashion Sense, Of Sorts Young Thug set the internet ablaze when his new album cover featured him fitted in a periwinkle colored dress. As Black Twitter vacillated on their feelings about his fashion choices, Thugger said it shouldn’t surprise anyone. His decision to wear the dress was, apparently, one of divine intervention but he’s been wearing girl’s/women’s clothing for a really long time. He discusses how his father used to discipline him for his fashion choices but he continues to wear what he wants because he doesn’t care what anyone thinks. via AllHipHop Young Thug has finally opened up about the controversy he recently caused by donning an extravagant gown on the cover of his latest mixtape release, No My Name Is Jeffrey . His statements are likely to turn more heads. “When I seen that dress, I felt like God gave it to me.” Thugger said when reflecting on the first time he laid eyes on the threads. In the artist’s interview with Billboard , he also gave a little insight as to the origin of his gender bender choices of fashion. “When I was 12, my feet were so small I wore my sisters’ glitter shoes,” he explained. The rapper then continued, “My dad would whoop me: ‘You’re not going to school now, you’ll embarrass us!’ But I never gave a f— what people think.” Thugger came close to breaking the internet when the cover of his project was released, as fans went into a frenzy, cooking up hilarious memes, while his Hip-Hop peers chastised his actions. Despite all of the backlash, Young Thug still managed to land in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 charts for the second time with the August 26 release. Thug is going to continue to do and wear what he wants and the sooner people let that go, the better off they will be.

#BodyGoals: Teyana Taylor Reveals THIS Is The Secret To Achieving Her Bangin’ “Fade” Body

Teyana Taylor Reveals Her Diet And Workout Secret After the world got an eyeful of Teyana Taylor’s bangin’ post-baby body , she became body goals for a whole host of people (Some who apparently hadn’t even heard of her ). Now everyone wants to know what her regimen is to get started now their Summer 17 body… Well as it turns out, you won’t get curves and cuts like Teyana’s by eating air and spending hours on the elliptical…because that’s NOT how she sculpted them herself. As Teyana revealed to E!online : Naturally, a number of people have now named her their fitspo, which is wonderful—except getting Taylor’s figure may be even harder than you thought, because it’s not exactly the traditional fitness program or strict diet that you may have assumed. Taylor tells E! News, “Dancing is my workout. I just dance. I almost feel like dance is so underrated in the fitness world.” (Noted. Compiling a fire playlist to dance to in the living room now.) A source reaffirms the fact, telling E! News, “Teyana Taylor has always just had a crazy dope body and the way she ‘works out’ is dancing in the studio. That’s her workout.” Additionally, if you’re putting down that burger and reaching for a salad because you think that’s what Teyana Taylor would do, you’re wrong, because she tells us she absolutely doesn’t diet and “eats everything,” so don’t worry about cheating yourself out of that juicy meal. The insider also adds, “Eating healthy is not her thing. She is the kind of girl that eats donuts and candy for breakfast. She just doesn’t gain weight.” On top of all that…she didn’t even take a moment to tone before shooting this oiled-up, caked out dance scene: Furthermore, Taylor didn’t jump-start her post-baby body journey for this project, because she didn’t know it was happening until three weeks prior to shooting. “I was shaking, excited, nervous and all that other good stuff,” she tells us. “When I saw it, I was just as in shock as everyone else, because I didn’t see the final product until he premiered it.” WELP. Looks like it’s time to sign up for dance classes, ladies… Tidal Continue reading

Ocean’s 8 Cast Confirmed, Already Under Fire

Hot on the heels of controversy over an all-female remake of Ghostbusters , we now have controversy over yet another all-female remake of a classic film. Indeed, Ocean's 8 really will be coming to a theater near you some time in the future. A remake of Ocean's 11 (which itself was a remake of a Frank Sinatra movie), the upcoming film will star a bunch of famous women taking on similar roles to the ones played in 2001 by George Clooney, Brad Pitt and company. And lots of people out there think this is really dumb. “Ocean’s 8 will be the remake of a remake. It epitomizes a lazy and cash-grab mentality in Hollywood,” wrote on person on Twitter, while another added: “Oh hey, Ocean’s 8. Another reboot with a female cast because, Hollywood can’t think of something creative or original for a change.” Fortunately, no one is taking issue with the cast members themselves… because it's nothing but a rundown of A-Listers. Take a look below at which stars are attached to Ocean's 8 and then sound off with your take on the project: 1. Sandra Bullock Bullock will take on the Clooney role, playing the ex-con sister of Clooney’s character, Danny Ocean. She’ll be the (perfect) mastermind. 2. Cate Blanchett This Oscar winner will play the Brad Pitt role, also known as Ocean’s sidekick. We really hope she’s also eating in every scene. 3. Anne Hathaway Her character has not yet been announced, but it has to be the Matt Damon role, right? The quiet outsider who no one thinks is capable of contributing much, but who ends up playing an integral part in the caper? 4. Rihanna It would be racist of us to assume she is playing the Bernie Mac role, so we won’t. We’ll just hope this goes better than her turn in Battleship. 5. Helena Bonham Carter Ah, the grizzled veteran. Relatively speaking, that is. It’s easy to envision Carter in the cranky, Carl Reiner-like role from the original. 6. Mindy Kaling We’re not sure on this one. A wise-cracker along the lines of Casey Affleck in Ocean’s 11 probably, right? We’re just thrilled she’s going to be in a major movie. View Slideshow
