J. Cole, Wale NBA All-Star Weekend Show Features Drake, Melanie Fiona

Drake and J. Cole sing ‘In the Morning,’ before Fiona, Cole and Wale perform ‘Beautiful Bliss.’ By Steven Roberts, with additional reporting by Janice Llamoca J. Cole Photo: MTV News NBA All-Star Weekend is officially under way in Los Angeles, and Wale and J. Cole helped to kick it off with a sold-out show at the House of Blues in West Hollywood on Friday night. The Roc Nation duo treated their fans, who had braved the uncharacteristically cold and damp Southern California weather, with an amazing performance as well as a surprise guest. Drake hit the stage during J. Cole’s set to perform their salacious smash hit “In the Morning.” The crowd erupted as soon as the track began to play, but it got even louder once Drake hit the stage to seduce nearly every young lady in attendance with his romantic style. “Baby, you wintertime cold/ The night is still young, drink that dinner wine slow/ I’m trying to make the goose bumps on your inner thigh show.” J. Cole and Drake released the video for the track this past week on Valentine’s Day. It features behind-the-scenes footage from their Paris stop on Drake’s Lights, Dreams and Nightmares European tour. When MTV News caught up with Cole before the show, he said that video was meant to be something really organic, even though it’s becoming something much bigger. “It was really a viral video. At the end of the day, it wasn’t supposed to be a Hype Williams production or nothing. I wanted it to be really organic, just to document the tour. Just to document that moment in my life, or our lives, touring Europe for the first time.” Cole said this was his first All-Star weekend, and he loved the energy it brought to the town. He has been in L.A. for two weeks now, since the Grammy Awards as well as working on his project with Kendrick Lamar . He said he hopes to play in the All-Star celebrity game next year to fulfill his hoop dreams. Another Canadian singer hopped on the stage as well. Fellow Roc Nation artist Melanie Fiona joined Cole and Wale onstage for their first-ever performance of Wale’s “Beautiful Bliss.” Wale opened his show with his usual vigor. During his set, which included tracks from his More About Nothing mixtape and Attention Deficit, the crowd roared once his collaboration with Waka Flocka and Roscoe Dash came on. But by that time, he had already cleared a space for himself to dance and shake his dreads as the crowd helped him rap. As far as he was concerned, it was business as usual, making sure the crowd had an amazing time. “We’re used to this now. We’ve done a lot of sold-out shows together. I just think the significance of this is it being All-Star weekend,” Wale said. “I think being a quote-unquote ‘real’ hip-hop show, that’s what makes it special.”

Could Ryan Murphy’s New FX Project American Horror Story Be Good For Glee?

Just two days after Fox aired a mediocre episode of Glee entitled “The Comeback,” co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Fulchack have announced their own comeback. The pair are returning to the network’s cable offshoot FX — where they created Nip/Tuck — to film a mysterious pilot called American Horror Story . While no details were given about the subject matter of the project — other than the fact that the hour-long drama will begin production in April — we here at Movieline HQ think that the diversion might actually be the perfect remedy for the creators of Fox’s tired musical series.

Kelly Clarkson Influenced By Prince, Aretha Franklin, Others For New Album

‘I record my last song on the 25th of this month and then we will be releasing the album!’ singer writes on Facebook. By James Dinh Kelly Clarkson Photo: Billy Ingram/ WireImage It’s been a while since we’ve heard some new music from Kelly Clarkson . But according to the “American Idol” alum, that’s all about to change very soon as she’s one track away from finishing her new album. While the 28-year-old songstress has previously described the project as ” Garbage-meets-pop-meets-Muse ,” the singer has now come forth to reveal that the she’s been influenced by some of music’s greats, including Prince, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin, for the forthcoming LP. Taking to her Facebook on Monday to keep fans updated about the project, Kelly said that she’s one track away from completing her fifth studio album. “PS: I record my last song on the 25th of this month and then we will be releasing the album!” she wrote. “This album was influenced by Prince, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, Radiohead and there’s a little bit of a Country vibe/influence on a couple of songs.” While the big-voiced singer wasn’t part of the Grammys’ all-star tribute to Aretha Franklin on Sunday, Clarkson revealed that one of her favorite tunes from her recent studio sessions was inspired by the Queen of Soul. “Oh and also one of my favorites on the new album is highly influenced by Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Eric Hutchinson wrote it … the album is gonna be a great pop record! I can’t wait for y’all to hear it!” she wrote. Although she partnered with acclaimed songwriter Toby Gad for two tracks, the singer tweeted to fans that she did not re-team with pop maestro Dr. Luke (“Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes”) this time around. Last October, the pop star participated in an impromptu Twitter Q&A , where she teased details about the new album. Not only has Clarkson recorded two duets for the still-untitled album, but she’s also announced that she’s ready to hit the road again. When we spoke to songwriter Claude Kelly last year, he said they’re working on something different for the new album. “Well, I wrote ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ for the last album, so we’re trying to take it up a level,” Kelly said. “She’s toured the world with that album. She’s experienced stuff, so whatever she’s going through right now: fun, good, the bad, the ugly — we want to put on that record.” What type of sound are you hoping to hear on Kelly’s new album? Rumor Control: Ciara Says She Didn’t Get Dropped, She’s Tryna Drop The Label

Inspired by her Amazon Princess Grammy dress, Ciara woke up this morning and decided to put her label on blast. She wanted to make one thing clear to her non-album-purchasing-a** fans: her label isn’t breaking up with her, she’s breaking up with THEM! This is what she posted via Facebook earlier: To my fans: This week the net has been a buzz of the rumor that I have been dropped from my label. At this point that rumor is false.. It is true that I have asked and I pray that my label will release me. I have had some great times and success with my label, but sometimes like all great things, its at that point where I feel we don’t share the same views on who I am as a artist. The past two albums have been very frustrating for me. At times there were songs I chose to lead a project and I was ignored! This project, I even tried to get Gimmie Dat started I spent tens of thousands of my own money only to hear the radio pds tell me my label didn’t want the song played. I even spent more than one hundred thousand dollars out of my pocket on the video to bring my vision to it and still no label support. I do understand that some labels are not financially supporting their artists and I have become one of them. You, my fans, know that I strive to do my best to deliver to you the best songs and creative vision I possibly can. I’m dedicated to my music, performance and to my fans! I’ve tried to be a team player with the label only to have compromised what I truly believed.. And was not given the right opportunity to promote and inform my fans of the release of this album..I have so much of me as a artist I still want to give to the world and my fans. A release would allow me to go be creative with people who care and understand me as a artist. In a short time, I will be able to bring to you a new music energy and a visual excitement! Thank you so much for standing by me through the good, bad, and the confusion. I love you all. Love Ciara Poor thang! Guess she never heard what A Tribe Called Quest said about record company people.

‘Prometheus’ Has ‘Definite Connection’ To ‘Alien,’ Michael Fassbender Says

‘It’s definitely in keeping with the old ones,’ movie’s star says about confusion over the Ridley Scott film. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michael Fassbender Photo: MTV News Ever since a Deadline New York report last month, there has been a lot of confusion about Ridley Scott’s newest “Alien” film , which marks the director’s return to the franchise more than 30 years after he brought the first “Alien” movie to the big screen. After word of the project first broke in the summer of 2009, the new report suggested the film was in fact not an “Alien” prequel but rather a film born of “Alien DNA” that is “unique, large and provocative.” Yet at the same time, contrary to this new spin, we were hearing that the film — titled “Prometheus” — was in fact a prequel to the franchise. Now, this all might be a matter of semantics (not to mention movie marketing), but there’s no doubt that confusion has surrounded the exact nature of the production. So when we had the chance to speak with one of the stars of the new film, Michael Fassbender, while he was promoting “Jane Eyre,” we asked him to shed some light on these conflicting judgments. And as he told us, “Prometheus” is most definitely an “Alien” movie. “Absolutely,” he said. “There’s a definite connecting vein. You realize you’re part of something else. But it’s definitely in keeping with the old ones.” What’s more, Fassbender said the new film is more closely related to the slow-burning “Alien,” which Scott directed, than James Cameron’s more action-oriented follow-up, “Aliens.” “It is more sort of the original one,” Fassbender explained. “There’s things happening and building, and the intelligence of the first two-thirds of the film gets you ready for the action … it’s creeping, it’s sinister, things are happening and building, all the different intrigues and politics going on between the different relationships onboard.” That’s not to say Damon Lindelof, who worked on the script with Scott, was blowing smoke when he said things to Deadline like, “In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie.” Fassbender told us that while “Prometheus” fits squarely within “Alien” mythology, the film delivers “a whole new revelation.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

On Taylor Lautner’s 19th Birthday, Let’s Take A Look Ahead!

We look at the many film projects the birthday boy has in store post-‘Breaking Dawn.’ By Terri Schwartz Taylor Lautner Photo: Cohen/ WireImage A very happy birthday shout-out goes to Taylor Lautner, who, just one year into adulthood, is the highest-grossing member of “The Twilight Saga” trio and one of the hottest young adult stars in Hollywood. This coming year will undoubtedly be one of the biggest years of the 19-year-old’s career as he finishes filming “Breaking Dawn” and embarks on his journey as a leading man after “The Twilight Saga” is finished. In honor of his big day, we’re taking a look at all the projects Lautner has on the horizon. If his current trajectory is anything to judge by, we have a feeling he will be even more popular and earning even more box-office gold at this time next year. First up is ” Abduction ,” which is being described as a thriller along the lines of the Jason Bourne films. He’s done intense amounts of training for the film and it will be his first chance to show off his chops as an action star. It also helps that his co-star, Lily Collins, is another big up-and-comer (she’ll star in the adaptation of “City of Bones”) and that their combined star power should propel his first major starring role post-“Twilight Saga.” Rounding out 2011 is the much-anticipated release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” which will feature Lautner more than any other film in the series. If the film stays true to the book (and there’s no guarantee that it will), about half of it will be shown from his character Jacob’s perspective, and it will be up to him and his wolf pack to carry the film. He also ends up with certainly one of the most interesting love interests he’s likely to have onscreen during the course of his career. Aside from the release of “Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ in late 2012, Lautner has a couple of other big films on the horizon as well. He returns to the young adult genre in the upcoming adaptation of ” Incarceron ,” and he’s shaping up to land a pretty hot co-star for the film. Last we heard, Emma Watson, Blake Lively and Jennifer Lawrence are short-listed for his romantic lead. And though it’s been about a year since we heard major news on Lautner’s other upcoming film ” Stretch Armstrong ,” it’s likely that he’ll start filming it once he’s done with “Breaking Dawn” in the next couple of months. It’s slated for 2012 and will also likely be his first film in 3-D. It’s a good thing, then, that he will ” not wear a shirt ” during the entire film. Last but not least, Lautner has his third action film in the form of ” Cancun .” It’s being described as “Taken” meets “Die Hard” and will be produced by Lautner’s own production company, Tailor Made. Again, there hasn’t been a lot of news on the film recently, but we’re excited to see him show off his martial arts skills some more on the big screen. ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’: Everything You Need To Know

Proving we never doubted him, MTV News has been following the 3-D doc since last summer. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Last August we discovered that pop superstar Justin Bieber was working on a 3-D movie . While details about the project were scant, the basic plot was outlined as footage that was a mix of Bieber’s personal life and concert performances. Soon after the movie was announced though, Oscar-winning “An Inconvenient Truth” director Davis Guggenheim dropped out , leaving the project in peril. But it was back on again a few weeks later when Jon Chu came onboard to helm the flick. “[It’s] a movie for his fans , a movie for people who don’t know him, and we’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,” Chu explained in August. “Because it’s a really fascinating story and it has a lot to do with our sort of digital lifestyle now. He was able to do what corporations try to do now when they use YouTube and they don’t even know what to do with it yet. It’s a pretty cool story for our time.” With the project in full swing, Bieber hit New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden on August 31 to shoot the film’s concert footage. Lucky fans at that show got an early teaser knowing that superstars like Miley Cyrus and Usher would appear in the film. The film remained without a title until mid-October, when Bieber’s team slowly rolled out an epic puzzle that revealed the project would be called “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.” A few weeks later, first trailer the dropped and it included interviews with fans and family and vintage Bieber video. In November, MTV News caught up with Bieber at his book signing and he described the film as “inspiring.” The following month, he revealed that he’d seen some of the film and that it was “amazing.” “I mean, I’m always nervous. We’re always trying to make our movies better,” Chu told us in December. “[Justin’s] been very supportive, he and his family and his team. I’m excited to share it with the world and show another side of 3-D. With ‘Step Up 3D,’ we learned a lot of lessons and we discovered a lot of things, and it’s just the beginning.” After obsessing over the trailer for weeks, fans were treated to a “Never Say Never” poster in late January. “Especially for this generation of kids, [it’s important to show] that they could make it on their own without a big corporation,” Chu told us when we caught up with him earlier this month. “I thought it was an exciting way to tell it: through his music.” On February 3, Bieber hit the Big Apple to premiere the flick, which features a new track, “Born to Be Somebody.” A week later he premiered the movie in Los Angeles, where even the star’s celebrity fans admitted to having Bieber Fever So what does Bieber think fans will take away from the flick? “People didn’t really know,” the Biebs told MTV News in L.A. “They didn’t understand that I’ve been playing music ever since I was born and it’s always been in me. And this movie is really going to show that I’m not just some packaged thing that some A&R put together. It was actually just me living my dream and just making music.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘X-Men: First Class’: Everything We’ve Seen So Far

Before the hotly anticipated trailer debuts, we thumb through our first peeks at Magneto, Charles Xavier, Emma Frost and more. By Eric Ditzian Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr in “X-Men: First Class” Photo: Murray Close The first trailer for “X-Men: First Class” is only hours away from going live on the film’s Facebook page, giving us our first look at footage from the upcoming superhero flick. It’s been a long time coming, considering that Fox first gave a go-ahead for the script back in 2008. Since then, we’ve gleaned all sorts of insight into the project, from interviews with behind-the-scenes players to production rumors to casting confirmations. And since filming began late last summer, we’ve been gifted with a slew of set photos and official production shots. Before the trailer arrives, let’s review everything we’ve seen so far. First Look at January Jones Our initial peek at “X-Men” came early last September, when photos of the “Mad Men” star — in full, fur-hatted costume as telepathic Emma Frost — popped up online. The aesthetic for the outfit seemed to be retro-futuristic, at once in keeping with the film’s ’60s-era setting and the mutants’ ahead-of-the-human-curve outlook. The photos also indicated — based on the presence of a red-starred jeep and helicopter — that the military will somehow factor into the story line. Meet James McAvoy Weeks later, we got our first look at McAvoy as Charles Xavier . Although taken at night and a little blurry, the photos once again showcased the film’s retro vibe. According to a report from an onlooker on the Oxford, England, set, the scene in question features Xavier “getting doctorates in theology and philosophy from Oxford University in the 1960s, his manipulation of student uprisings using his psychic powers and the way he meets best friend-turned-archrival Magneto.” The Fallen Blackbird By December, the production had shifted Stateside and we got a tantalizing look at Xavier’s Blackbird ship. The aerial shots seemed to indicate the ship had crashed on a beach. The actual location of the shoot was an island off the coast of Georgia, but speculation suggested the in-film setting would be Muir Island, Scotland, where Xavier conducts experiments to better understand the mutant gene. Weeks later, a supposed “X-Men” storyboard indicated that a mutant may be responsible for a Blackbird crash. Look at All Those Mutants! In January, a photo popped up showing a bunch of mutants together, including Jones, McAvoy, Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert) and Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique). It turned out the photo was an early leak , and director Matthew Vaughn was not pleased. “When I found out, I said, ‘What the f— is this sh–?’ and Fox is running around trying to figure out what happened as well,” he said. “I agree. It’s like a bad Photoshop, which maybe it was by someone. It didn’t reflect the movie. I was shocked when I saw it.” Official photos soon arrived: Kevin Bacon as Hellfire Club baddie Sebastian Shaw, rocking an ascot and talking business with Jones; Fassbender and James McAvoy looking stylish and concerned alongside some of their mutant students; a helmet-clad Fassbender as Magneto ; and McAvoy employing Xavier’s gift of telepathy. Most recently, looks at Magento from behind and the full X-Men logo were published on Wednesday, ahead of the trailer premiere. “I’m a fan of X-Men. We’re not bastardizing X-Men, I’m trying to get them back to being whole again,” Vaughn said. “It’s definitely more serious and more realistic, and I think that’s something that had to happen. That’s my feeling about the world we live in right now. I think the glossy colorful superhero film sorta had its day.” Check out everything we’ve got on “X-Men: First Class.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
