No Beaver For Mel Gibson Until May 6

The Beaver , a Jodie Foster film that stars her embattled friend Mel Gibson, is being pushed pack by six weeks to a May 6 release date, its distributor said. Summit Entertainment originally hoped to release it in 2010, but it was pulled amid Gibson’s nasty domestic dispute with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva . A May release provides Summit time to build word-of-mouth and allows Foster, who’s filming another project until mid-March, more time to promote it. You can watch the trailer for The Beaver , in which Gibson plays a troubled man who communicates with people by using a hand-held beaver puppet, here: The Beaver Trailer

‘The Roommate’ Moves Into First Place At Friday Box Office

College-stalker creep-fest snatches up $6.4 million. By Mawuse Ziegbe Minka Kelly in “The Roommate” Photo: Sony Leighton Meester’s dorm-based thriller “The Roommate” received a warm welcome from moviegoers during its debut Friday. The “Gossip Girl” star’s turn as an accommodating turned obsessed roomie who goes all crazy-pants on Minka Kelly’s unsuspecting character raked in $6.4 million when it arrived in theaters. Perhaps part of the film’s draw is the fight scenes — fist-flinging showdowns which Kelly said the actresses worked hard to imbue with a sense of it’s-going-down authenticity. “We worked really hard to make sure it looked like a real girl fight,” she explained. “I Googled ‘girl fights’ on YouTube, and we made sure it was messy and hair was everywhere.” Kelly added that the starlets didn’t bother faking the combat, leaving their Hollywood images behind and lobbing actual punches. “We fought to kill, because unfortunately, when girls fight, they fight to kill, and that was very true and real in our fight. We did our own stunts. We were pretty banged up by the end of it,” she admitted. The James Cameron-produced adventure “Sanctum” debuted in the second place. The flick, which treads familiar Cameron man-against-the-elements territory as it follows a team of explorers who get caught in a labyrinthine underground cave system following a dramatic storm, scored $3.5 million. “No Strings Attached slipped to third place. The casual-sex rom-com, which features Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman, scored $2.9 million on Friday. The haul kicks the film’s box-office bank to about $46.3 million. Still riding the boost from its boatloads of Oscar love, “The King’s Speech,” kicked off the weekend in fourth place. The film made $2.3 million, a figure that pumps the project’s total estimated tally to $78 million. Screen legend Anthony Hopkins’ latest flesh-crawling flick, “The Rite,” spent Friday in fifth place, with $1.9 million. The movie’s total estimated gross now stands at around $20 million. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Roommate,” “Sanctum” and “No Strings Attached.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com.

Saigon Finally Tells The Greatest Story Never Told

‘This album is my offering to hip-hop,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of long-awaited debut. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Saigon Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily Main Pick Street King : Saigon Holding It Down For : Mooseknuckle to Brownsville Independent LP : The Greatest Story Never Told Real Spit : “This ain’t about a mixtape, this is about my story,” Saigon, a Mixtape Daily favorite, told us when we asked him about his upcoming project. “I know you know me from the mixtapes, but this is the album, the debut.” Pardon the intensity, but our Brooklyn brother has been hard at work on this project for more than a few years, and his labor of love is just weeks away from finally seeing the light of day. “This album is my offering to hip-hop,” Sai said. “There’s no jumping from story to story. It’s put together like a story, from start to beginning. And I think it’s a great piece of work that people are gonna appreciate.” The New York rhyme spitter has a tale that’s as in-depth as his poetics on wax. He was one of the Big Apple’s finest upstarts in years and inked a deal with Atlantic Records. He later raged against the machine, however, with his blistering “Trans-Atlantic Slave Deal” when he felt he was being pushed to deliver pop hits and later parted ways with the label. On February 15, the rapper will finally release a collective of material that showcases his full range of skills, from his booming voice, passionate delivery and lively topical offerings. After delivering a couple of warning shots, Saigon is in storytelling mode now. Joints to Check For

‘Superman’ Star Henry Cavill Had Long Road To Landing The Role

Actor has been linked to Superman reboots since 2002. By Eric Ditzian Henry Cavill Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images It took Henry Cavill far longer than expected to complete his journey from Krypton to Earth. Years after the British actor first circled the role of Superman, he finally landed the part of the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder’s reboot of the storied comic franchise. It was, indeed, a circuitous path for Cavill, involving brushes with other heroes and the planet’s most swoon-worthy vampire. He’s been this close to becoming a breakout Hollywood star a staggering number of times, but until now he was unable to seal the deal. Now his life is about to change in a big way. As we applaud Cavill for winning the part, let’s take a look back at the ups and downs he endured before signing on to play the world’s most iconic man in tights. 2002 : Though he was mostly known as a stage actor, Cavill’s name cropped up in “Superman” conversations following director Brett Ratner’s stated desire to cast an unknown in the title role of his in-the-works reboot. Ratner also had a strong interest in future “White Collar” star Matthew Bomer , but the studio pushed him in the direction of established talent like Jude Law and Josh Hartnett. It didn’t matter, though: Ratner left the project early the next year. 2003 : McG came aboard to replace Ratner and began to search, like Ratner, for an unknown actor to play Superman. Cavill actually ended up landing the role. “I was attached to the McG ‘Superman’ movie,” he explained to MTV News in 2009. But McG’s version of the film never came to pass and Cavill once again missed out on the opportunity to play the Man of Steel. That same year, following rumors that Cavill was being considered for the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s reboot, Christian Bale won the role of the Caped Crusader. 2004 : After McG’s departure from “Superman,” Bryan Singer hopped into the director’s chair and targeted an unknown actor. But the actor wasn’t Cavill. Instead, Brandon Routh won the lead role. “[The McG and Singer versions] were two different movies,” Cavill explained in ’09. “So it wasn’t so much of a sting because it was like, ‘Oh, I got [the role],’ and then the movie just didn’t happen.” 2005 : Cavill wouldn’t have been faulted for avoiding any contact with iconic film characters, but he kept pushing. In ’05, he screen-tested for the role of James Bond in “Casino Royale.” But the part went instead to Daniel Craig, and Cavill, perhaps, was left with his confidence shaken, not stirred. 2007 : By this point, Cavill had mostly appeared in low-profile films like the direct-to-video “Hellraiser: Hellworld” and in supporting roles in higher-profile fare like “Tristan & Isolde.” But the guy got a break when he was cast in the Showtime series “The Tudors,” opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The series enjoyed a successful run, lasting four seasons and earning a Golden Globe nomination in 2007 for best drama. Cavill had also reportedly been “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s top pick to play Edward Cullen, but at the end of ’07, the role went to Robert Pattinson. A few years later, we asked Cavill how close he had actually come to playing the vampire. “I’ve heard this, but I haven’t heard from Stephenie,” Cavill told us . “I haven’t spoken to her personally, and I haven’t spoken to the producers.” 2009 : Rumor has it that Cavill was competing for the role of Hal Jordan in the long-gestating big-screen adaptation of “Green Lantern.” And — surprise, surprise — after losing out on Batman and Superman, Cavill failed to land the role. Instead, Ryan Reynolds signed on to play Jordan . 2011 : At long, long last, the guy who missed out on playing some of pop culture’s best known characters officially signs on to play Superman . “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder said in a statement. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . “The Royal Families” aka The Camels Carters And The Smiths Partner To Form Film Company

That’s a LOT of money in that picture. Sweet black love in the building ya’ll… Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith and their partners at Overbrook Entertainment have formed a joint-venture with Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter to develop and produce major motion pictures. First up? A remake of the Broadway musical “Annie,” in which Will and Jada’s daughter, Willow — who recently signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label — will star in. Although the project is in its preliminary stages, it will be developed with Sony Pictures Entertainment and produced by Overbrook and Jay. The partnership between Will and Jada and Jay-Z began when the three decided to invest in the beauty line Carol’s Daughter. Their next venture together was when they joined forces again to co-produce the Broadway play “Fela!” Since then, Willow, who is managed by Overbrook’s Miguel Melendez, has signed to Roc Nation and released first single “Whip My Hair.” “The Overbrook Entertainment family and I have a unified vision. We’ve already produced a Tony Award-winning play and we’re developing a true superstar in Willow,” said Jay-Z in a statement. “This venture into film development and production is a perfect next step with teams that are accomplished, creative and innovative.” Is there ANYTHING that these couples can’t do?? It’s f*cking awesome to see black couples and their children building empires and achieving new levels of success and empowerment. Clap for ‘em. Source

Jay Sean And Lil Wayne Reunite For ‘Hit The Lights’

Sean’s second U.S. album, Freeze Time , is due in the spring. By Akshay Bhansali Jay Sean Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images After first hopping on Jay Sean ‘s U.S. debut single, “Down,” in ’09, it appears Lil Wayne has co-signed Sean’s forthcoming second U.S. album, Freeze Time , due in the spring. Wayne is featured on the project’s second single, “Hit the Lights,” following “2012 (It Ain’t the End)” featuring Nicki Minaj, which Sean released last year. The song, which leaked this weekend and will go on sale digitally February 8, is a progressive house banger made for the dance floor that could rival Britney Spears’ recent electro-house jam, “Hold It Against Me,” in the clubs. “Lights” was produced by the Orange Factory, the outfit who also crafted Sean’s last album, including radio hits “Down” and “Do You Remember,” featuring Sean Paul and Lil Jon. Now that pop music has gone “club,” it appears the Factory have returned to their dance roots with “Lights.” Orange Factory producer J Remy co-produced Dynamix’s hit “Don’t Want Another Man” featuring Tina Ann, which reached #1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Airplay Chart in November 2000. Keeping in line with Jay Sean’s “Feel good, life is good” mantra, “Lights” is a party record that begs of the listener to get themselves to a dance floor. Sean sings: “Put your lighters in the air/ Let ’em burn into the night/ And let everybody know/ That you’re with it and you’re ready to go/ Come out in the dark, and let the DJ lead the way/ ‘Cause it’s hot in the club now/ So don’t let it stop now/ So hit the lights.” And if Sean can be seen as inviting the ladies onto the dance floor, then it seems Weezy means to take over for the next phase of the party. Wayne raps: “Hit the lights so you can see/ My drink is strong, my hookah sweet/ Understand the time is now, but time is up, the future’s bleak/ This beat is stupid, cupid/ Love me, leave me in the morning/ If you like, your friend can join in.” Have you heard “Hit the Lights”?
