Swizz Beatz Says No Monster Mondays Tracks Will Make Haute Living

‘That’s really just a forum for people to promote great music,’ producer says of weekly free-music series. By Mawuse Ziegbe Swizz Beatz Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News Swizz Beatz is leaving his free music on the Web. The Grammy-nominated producer’s weekly Monster Mondays series of gratis ear goodies follows in the footsteps of fellow MC and songsmith Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Fridays campaign , but unlike ‘Ye, Swizzy maintained that his upcoming Haute Living album will be largely free of Monster records. “Monster Mondays is its own entity for right now. But will I put my first single on Monster Mondays? 100 percent. Monster Mondays, Swizzworld,100 percent. I’m gonna promote my stuff when it’s time,” Swizz recently told MTV News. “That’s really just a forum for people to promote great music, which is now turning into them shooting videos for it, labels putting up budgets for it. It’s just a great forum.” True to the spirit of the initiative, some of the music has already turned up on other projects, like the Diddy-Dirty Money track “Ass on the Floor,” which first hit the Web via Monster Mondays but ultimately ended up on the trio’s debut LP. So far, everyone from Ace Hood to Busta Rhymes has participated in the campaign — which kicked off in October — but Swizzy singled out his team-up with lyrical legend Rakim as his personal highlight of the series. “My favorite song on there is ‘King Tut.’ Getting a chance to work with Rakim and let people to just hear him, like, in 2010 when he did it. Like, that’s Rakim right there. Just to be able to say that I did that was super fun and [there’s] no politics involved. We don’t gotta deal with nobody. It’s no politics — I’m not talking to no labels, no management. It’s like, ‘Yo, you either wanna do it or not,’ ” Swizz explained of the project’s energy. Swizz has also switched up Kanye’s original music-centric blueprint by putting out a brief documentary of the creation of “Speechless,” a track that features his superstar wife Alicia Keys and longtime Ruff Ryder crony Eve riffing over Yeezy’s “Devil in a New Dress” beat. As the hitmaker is apparently in full-on collaborative mode — outside music, Swizz has also struck up partnerships with Reebok and luxury car company Aston Martin — he also got the production pupils from his New York University class in on the Monster Monday action. “Then taking it to what I did with my wife with the documentary with her and Eve, taking a whole other side and adding a documentary vibe to it. The biggest thing out of the documentary, other than them seeing the process, was it was done by some of my students from NYU,” he said. “Just taking that and adding talent with talent, it’s just fun. It’s all fun.” What Monster Mondays track do you like best so far? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Swizz Beatz

Seth Rogen Calls Online ‘Green Hornet’ Hate ‘Frustrating’

‘People are saying how bad it is without having seen anything,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Seth Rogen Photo: MTV News Seth Rogen knew there was nowhere to hide. When he and writing partner Evan Goldberg took on the task of reinventing “Green Hornet” in a post-“Dark Knight” world, there was bound to be mud slung in their direction. Perhaps, though, he didn’t think there’d be so much of it. As Rogen himself put it earlier this year, the production faced “every possible obstacle … to the point that it really just got ridiculous,” including major recastings and the departure of director Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle”) during pre-production. Then, once filming was complete, Sony decided to convert the film into 3-D, then pushed the release from audience-friendly dates in summer and December to the perceived cinematic wasteland of January. As every snag became public, websites and fans seemed to turn against the project. “Green Hornet,” the Internet decided, was nothing but squandered potential, a train wreck, something to avoid at all costs. And then a funny thing happened: People started to see the film, and they liked it. A lot. All the while, Rogen and Goldberg sat back and watched the scrum. They had a feeling things would turn around. “It’s something that Evan would constantly have to remind me of throughout the process, in that this is kind of exactly what we thought would happen,” Rogen told MTV News recently. “From the second we thought of doing a movie like this, I remember talking about it like, ‘Everyone’s going to think it’s going to be insane and terrible and we’ll just have to keep our heads down and make it, and then it’ll come out and then people will slowly see that we weren’t nuts and that it was actually a good idea.’ ” That’s not to say all the Web-based hate didn’t get to him. There were times, it seems, that Rogen had to restrain himself from chucking his laptop out the window, or at least from staying offline for a while. “As you get wrapped up in it, as there’s two years of time where people are saying how bad it is, without having seen anything, it does get frustrating and, ultimately, just disappointing, more than anything. You look at these outlets that, as a comic book nerd, I kind of respected at times and thought were interesting voices just say things that are insane and completely uninformed and uneducated and based on no reality whatsoever, and it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, that’s disappointing. I thought these guys were cool.’ But they’re not. They’re just like everybody else.” Now, however, with the film hitting theaters Friday and praise coming from all corners for its entertaining balance between high-octane action and the sort of laughs familiar from Rogen’s earlier comedies, the guy is feeling good. Not that he’s one to brag. “It is nice that people actually have to base their assumptions on the movie now and not just what they think the movie is going to be like,” he laughed. Wyclef Jean’s Sister Melky Raises Funds, Awareness For Haiti With New Album

‘People always say, ‘I’m going to start with the man in the mirror,’ but I want us to hold hands and look in the mirror together,’ she tells RapFix. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Hillary Crosley Melky Jean in her video for “Better” Photo: MCA Last year, the world rallied around Haiti after a devastating earthquake upended the tiny country. This year, to mark the one-year anniversary , celebrities have continued to bring awareness to the aftermath, from George Clooney’s pleas for support to Sean Penn relocating to Haiti as a resident. Included in that group are Wyclef Jean and his sister, Melky. The latter star is set to release her next project, Care for Haiti, an album she’s been working on since 2007 that has grown in importance since the earthquake. All of the proceeds from the album are slated to go to Care, a charitable organization that’s helped the country for more than 50 years. Melky Jean managed to pull in some big names for the project and hopes their fame will help bring further help to Haiti, which is still struggling to recover from the natural disaster. “Back in 2007, not many people knew what was going on in Haiti, but I was able to get some really awesome artists at the time like KRS-One, Talib Kweli, Patti LaBelle, Sean Paul, of course Wyclef, Natasha Bedingfield and Ang

Russell Crowe Appears Confirmed For RZA’s Kung-Fu Film

Besides the exciting news that Wu-Tang Clan member and martial arts-aficionado RZA’ s Kung Fu film The Man with the Iron Fist was actually beginning production in China, there hasn’t been much to report on the project. The fact that co-writer Eli Roth stepped on as producer along with Quentin Tarantino seemed like a forgone conclusion and the cast of Lucy Liu, Daniel Wu and Byron Mann more or less made sense. But finally, a bombshell of sorts: Russell Crowe appears confirmed to star in the film.

Cake Try For ‘Classy And Grandiose’ In Showroom Of Compassion

After a six-plus-year wait between albums, indie rockers didn’t feel obligated to ‘reinvent’ their sound. By Sabrina Rojas Weiss Cake’s John McCrea Photo: MTV News “It’s been a long time,” John McCrea sings on the second track of Cake ‘s new album, Showroom of Compassion, which dropped on Tuesday (January 11). For fans who have been waiting more than six years for a new release from the understated indie rockers, it sure has been. And what they’ll get after this long time is signature Cake , albeit with a few adjustments. “We’re not trying to change; we never have,” McCrea told MTV News. “I always thought that was so wasteful for musicians to feel so obligated to reinvent themselves every album. … That said, we do have reverb for the first time on my vocals. I think I had a moratorium against reverb all this time because I didn’t want to sound grandiose.” There’s also more piano, which McCrea said they avoided in the past “because we didn’t want to sound classy. Now we’re a little classier,” he deadpanned. “I think we’re doing what America wants us to do: being classy and grandiose. And rude, with the song ‘Sick of You.’ ” But none of this is news to the real die-hards, who have videotaped live performances of the new songs, studied the lyrics and are already singing along to every word at concerts. “It’s pretty great, especially if you go someplace like France, where the language is French and the album has only been out for a couple months, and everybody is singing the words in English,” said Vince DeFiore, who plays trumpet, keyboard and percussion. After spending years extricating themselves from a label deal, launching their own label and dealing with other issues that “musicians shouldn’t have to deal with in a normal situation,” Cake set about recording the album in an entirely solar-powered studio in Sacramento, California. The conversion turned out to be so efficient, they actually get a kickback from the city now. “As the value of recorded music descends to zero, we get a little check for $25,” McCrea said of their power-grid surplus. But a band whose songs are perennial favorites for use in ads (Apple, Snapple), TV shows (everything from “The Sopranos” to “Chuck”) and movies, shouldn’t have to worry about funds too much. Are there any Showroom songs they think are ripe for commercial use? ” ‘Easy to Crash’ — maybe that would be good for a car that has a really good safety record,” McCrea offered. “I might allow that. I’m pro safety.” Related Artists Cake

Kanye West, Jay-Z Watch The Throne Pairing Treads New Ground

Album collaborations are rare in hip-hop history. By Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Now that their first single, “H.A.M.,” has debuted, it looks like Jay-Z and Kanye West’s highly anticipated Watch the Throne album is actually happening. West tweeted about the collaboration in August , and confirmed it a few months later, saying the project would now be a full album . But few would have guessed it would be released so soon — right on the heels of West’s critically lauded My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — and there aren’t too many examples in music history of two superstars collaborating on an album. Click for photos of other great collaborations in music history. There have been plenty of rock “supergroups” who have released albums over the years, starting with the likes of Cream (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce) and Crosby, Stills and Nash (David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash) in the 1960s and continuing to Velvet Revolver (Slash, Scott Weiland, Dave Kushner, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum), Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones) and Audioslave (Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk). However, there isn’t as rich a history of duos and groups coming together in hip-hop. The Wu-Tang Clan and N.W.A are as influential as any groups in hip-hop, but their members’ reputations didn’t flourish until they embarked on their own. And they were originally groups to begin with. The Firm saw Nas join forces with AZ, Foxy Brown and Nature under the production of Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters, but besides Nas, the group’s members are far from household names. More recently, Nas teamed up with Damian Marley to release Distant Relatives , but neither of these artists can touch the current popularity of West or Jay-Z. Barbara Streisand enlisted Barry Gibb to write an album for her during the height of the Bee Gees’ success in the late ’70s. In 1980, the pair produced Streisand’s Guilty , which went on to sell 20 million records and win a Grammy. While anyone would be hard-pressed to match that success, Jay-Z is no stranger to collaborative albums. He teamed up with R. Kelly to record Best of Both Worlds in 2002. At the time, Jay-Z was arguably the most-popular rapper and R. Kelly was certainly the biggest R&B artist. The two had previously collaborated successfully on Kelly’s “Fiesta” remix and Jay-Z’s “Guilty Until Proven Innocent,” so an album seemed like the ideal next step. By time the album would be released, however, R. Kelly was embroiled in very public trial. The pair would try again with Unfinished Business in 2004, but tensions eventually boiled over. Amid their respective controversies, both albums were certified platinum. Jay also collaborated with Linkin Park in 2004 to release Collision Course , which saw the group and Hov reworking and mashing up their previous recordings. Jay also unofficially collaborated with Danger Mouse on The Grey Album , a mash-up of Jay’s The Black Album and the Beatles’ self-titled White Album . The Grey Album would go on to launch the career of Danger Mouse, who has since released albums with Cee-Lo Green under the name Gnarls Barkley and The Shins’ James Mercer as the band Broken Bells. West produced the majority of Common’s Be and Finding Forever albums, and he was rumored to be working with Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco on a CRS (Child Rebel Soldier) album. Miley Cyrus Working On ‘Big Bang’ Film

Her mother, Tish Cyrus, might help turn Rock Mafia video into a movie. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus in “The Big Bang” video Photo: Hollywood Records Back in November, Rock Mafia’s Tim James revealed to MTV News that plans were being formed to turn the sexy clip for their tune “The Big Bang” into an even-sexier movie starring its video girl, Miley Cyrus . News reports that Miley’s mom, Tish Cyrus, has been meeting with Suzanne Todd — a producer on films such as “Alice in Wonderland,” the “Austin Powers” films and “Memento” — to turn the music video into a full-length feature. Sources tell the website Miley is looking to reprise her role to pick up where her ghostly character left off. There’s no word yet if Kevin Zegers will return to the project. Rock Mafia’s Antonina Armato tweeted about the project, for which her team would reportedly help write the script. “Just had a Meeting with Tish Cyrus and Suzanne Todd for ‘Big Bang’ To be made into a Movie!!! #fingerscrossed,” she tweeted Monday. A rep for the group did not respond to MTV News’ request for more information by press time. Armato said the film will be “epic.” Regarding the “Big Bang” music video, James gave props to Miley and Zegers for their turn as star-crossed lovers. “The whole idea was to do something different,” he explained. “[The director] had such a cool vision for it … the vision was to let it fly, let the chemistry speak for itself. Seth Rogen Based His ‘Green Hornet’ Character On Paris Hilton

‘We wanted to start out with a guy who was the last guy you would ever expect to be a superhero,’ actor tells MTV News of Britt Reid. By Eric Ditzian Seth Rogen Photo: MTV News The first time we meet the adult Britt Reid — the scion of a Los Angeles media magnate — he’s gleefully trashing a hotel, one part Keith Moon-style rock star, one part reality-TV celebutant. The party boy, of course, will go on to become the superhero who gives “Green Hornet” its name. But in the beginning, Britt is simply a hard-drinking, model-humping, spoiled brat. And, as Seth Rogen explained to MTV News, he and co-writer Evan Goldberg turned to some real-life inspiration to create the character. “We kind of based him off a male Paris Hilton, as embarrassing as that is to say,” he told MTV News. “That is what we looked at — those people who are the sons or daughters of people who have accomplished great things. We probably give them a little more credit than they’ve gotten in the past and we explore why they’re such jerks and why they act out. Maybe it’s because they didn’t get the attention they wanted.” That’s certainly the case for Britt. His dad looks at his son, who’s more likely to end up in the newspaper for his antics than his professional accomplishments, as nothing short of an embarrassment. It’s just that fatherly disappointment that fuels Britt’s transformation into the Green Hornet. “We wanted to start out with a guy who was the last guy you would ever expect to be a superhero and slowly make that guy a hero instead of starting with a guy who’s already pretty morally centered, just doesn’t quite have the idea yet,” Rogen explained. And who knows? Perhaps Hilton herself might get a few ideas about a new career path. “She’s going to become a superhero,” Rogen laughed. “I hope so.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Green Hornet.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
