Daft Punk’s ‘Derezzed’ Video Revives The ‘Tron’ Legacy

French electro duo tease their unmasking in just-premiered clip. By James Montgomery Daft Punk’s “Derezzed” music video premieres Photo: Walt Disney Records As if the gigantic electronic pyramid and constantly worn robot helmets weren’t proof enough, I’m beginning to suspect that Daft Punk derive some sort of bizarre pleasure from messing with us. The latest example of this occurred Tuesday (December 7) with the premiere of “Derezzed,” the first single from their much-anticipated “Tron Legacy” soundtrack. As any “Tron”/ Daft Punk obsessive (and they’re basically the same people) will tell you, it not only comes after years of bated-breath waiting, but after October’s premiere of a teaser trailer that pretty much everyone assumed was the actual video for the song anyway. So, right off the bat, Daft Punk have you on the ropes. You probably just finished wrapping your head around the teaser version of “Derezzed,” and now, well, there’s a whole new version to digest. And while I’ll get to the video in a second, it bears mentioning here that the music in the clip is also a bit of a mind-frick, because after telling anyone who would listen that their score to the “Tron” sequel would be a departure from their four-on-the-floor, French house-ified past — mentioning “90-piece orchestras” in interviews about the project — they come right back and hit you with a slab of downright classic Daft Punk: spindly synths and robo voices and piston-pumping backbone and the full nine. The video itself? Well, it’s sure to be a treat for everyone who’s been holding their breath since Daft Punk began working on the score nearly two years ago. It’s a loving nod to the “Tron” past — all retro grids and tracing light cycles, not to mention the sly working of ENCOM into the proceedings — but it also keeps DP obsessives watching until the last possible frame — because it keeps teasing the very real possibility that the French duo may actually be unmasked. Turns out, all we get to see is actress Olivia Wilde. It’s a cruel — if not cunning — trick, and after watching the video time and time again, I get the very real feeling that somewhere, in their robotic headquarters high atop the Parisian sprawl, Daft Punk are laughing. They win again. What did you think of the “Derezzed” video? Share your reviews in the comments! Diddy-Dirty Money ‘Sorry’ For Delaying The Last Train

‘To be honest, we weren’t ready,’ Diddy tells MTV News of December 14 LP. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Ricky Louis Diddy-Dirty Money Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images The train is almost here! After a series of delays, Diddy-Dirty Money are finally set to release their album Last Train to Paris on December 14. The Bad Boy Records CEO apologized for the number of setbacks, but said the project is finally ready. The album’s various release dates go as far back as September 2009, but the mogul says there was a reason for the changes. “The wait is over,” Diddy told MTV News. “We pushed our album back a bunch of times because we felt, to be honest, we weren’t ready. I think a lot of times artists make that mistake. They get locked into a date and they’re like, ‘Well, I told everybody my date was this.’ “And it’s not fair to change your date four times like we did,” he continued. “We’re sorry. But at the same time, we had to get to know each other better. We had more work to do to jell. We had to do different things on the album to make it more balanced and really finish the story the right way, not the selfish way. We feel comfortable now that we’re telling the story in the way it’s supposed to be told.” Currently, Diddy and company are enjoying success with two tracks, the Drake-assisted “Loving You No More” and “Coming Home,” which the group performed over the weekend on “Saturday Night Live.” Formerly of Danity Kane, Dirty Money singer Dawn Richard talked about the long-delayed project that includes a range of stars from Justin Timberlake and Lil Wayne to Chris Brown.

S. 2. (Drumma Boy was actually doing double duty during the Mixtape Daily interview, tending to another Memphis heavyweight, 8Ball, who was going through tracks.) “The sound of the project is basically a whole mix, it’s like a gumbo,” Drumma explained. “You gon’ hear a little bit of rock influence, you gon’ hear a little bit of soul influence, a little bit of Marvin Gaye influence, with the “AM/FM” — shout-out to Lupe, coming through, you know, blazing us.” He continued, “I can’t say too much. Kurtis Blow Busted For Marijuana At Airport

Rap pioneer was caught with the drug after a pat-down at Los Angeles International Airport. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kurtis Blow Photo: Bill Pugliano/ Getty Images Legendary MC Kurtis Blow just caught a tough break: The rapper was busted with marijuana at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday (December 2). The rap pioneer was caught with a small amount of weed as he went through a security screening around 5:45 a.m., according to E! News . After a body scan uncovered “an anomaly” in his clothing, the MC was subjected to a pat-down, which revealed a bag of pot. The Harlem spitter, who was born Kurtis Walker, had less than an ounce of the drug, so he was slapped with a misdemeanor citation and the weed was confiscated. Since kicking off his career in the ’70s, Blow has been lauded as a hip-hop pioneer, with a slew of firsts under his belt. He is credited with becoming the first rapper to release a major-label album, and his signature 1980 single, “The Breaks,” became the first hip-hop song to be certified gold. He is also credited as the first to head out on a national and international hip-hop tour while the culture was still in its infancy as a mainstream force. While hip-hop artists hawk everything from sneakers to beer these days, Blow was the first rapper to sign an endorsement deal. Aside from helping to push hip-hop from a local New York City movement to a global phenomenon, Blow’s legacy as a rap game-changer endures. Contemporary hip-hop stars still turn to his catalog for inspiration. Case in point: His track “If I Rule the World” was covered by Queens MC Nas. With his music career behind him, Blow has since turned to religion, helming services at his Hip Hop Church in Harlem.

Q-Tip ‘Not In Support’ Of Tribe Called Quest Documentary

MC tweets, ‘Filmmaker should respect the band to the point of honoring the few requests’ made about the doc. By Mawuse Ziegbe Q-Tip Photo: Mark Von Holden/WireImage A Tribe Called Quest’s game-changing legacy is slated to hit the big screen in the forthcoming documentary “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest,” which has been picked up for Sundance. A trailer for the flick recently hit the Web, and Tribe acolytes have voiced their excitement on the project’s Facebook page . However, there is one key detractor whose concerns could potentially derail anticipation for the film and diminish its credibility: Tribe frontman Q-Tip. On Thursday (December 2), the Queens MC blasted the film via his Twitter account. “I am not in support of the a tribe called quest documentary,” he wrote . The “Electric Relaxation” lyricist explained his gripes stem from creative differences between the hip-hop crew and the team behind the doc. “The filmmaker shld respect the band enough to honor our request regarding the film,” Q-Tip wrote. “The filmmaker should respect the band to the point of honoring the few requests that’s was made abt the piece.” A spokesperson for Rival Films, the production company behind the project, was not available when MTV News reached out for comment. Actor Michael Rapaport (“Bamboozled”) directed the film which, according to the flick’s website , revolves around the group’s reunion for the 2008 Rock the Bells Tour . The impact and influence of the collective is explored by fellow hip-hop luminaries like Native Tongues members Busta Rhymes and De La Soul and rap superstars like Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. Despite Q-Tip’s issues with the film, it appears to have been made not only with the band’s cooperation, but all members of the original Tribe lineup — Phife, Ali Shaheed and Jarobi — figure prominently in the project. The film will premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in January. Are you looking forward to the Tribe documentary? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Q-Tip A Tribe Called Quest

Joe Jonas Solo Album Will Have ‘A Little Edge,’ Songwriter Says

Kevin Cossom says he and producer Danja are giving the Jonas Brother ‘a lane’ of his own. By James Dinh Joe Jonas Photo: Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images Alongside his brothers, Joe Jonas captured the hearts and lungs of a legion of young female admirers in recent years. But his audience may change a little when the Disney star releases his first solo album, according to singer/songwriter Kevin Cossom. “We’re just trying to give him a little edge,” the on-the-rise Cossom told YRB magazine of working with producer Danja on Jonas’ music. “He’s getting a little older now, and I’m just giving him a little edge, but giving him a lane. The stuff is coming out really good. As you know, Danja, he’s so versatile as far as being a producer.” Having worked with chart toppers Britney Spears (“Gimme More”), Pink (“Sober”) and Diddy-Dirty Money (“Hello Good Morning”), Danja may be the man to help the teen star make a musical transition into adulthood. “[Danja’s] very versatile, so the sound is a mixture of a lot of different things, but it’s definitely something that’s coming together,” Cossum said of the solo Jonas LP “He’s definitely going solo, getting older.” In addition to Jonas, Cossum has work lined up for Keri Hilson, Justin Bieber and Mary J. Blige. He’s also finishing up work on his own debut album, LOVE (Levels of Various Emotions). Jonas has previously said he is working on “a

Jazmine Sullivan Is Showing Her ‘Softer Side’ On New Album

But fans will ‘still get some fire’ on Love Me Back, R&B singer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Joel Hanek Jazmine Sullivan Photo: MTV News Jazmine Sullivan announced she was Fearless in 2008 when she released her debut album. And while the LP shares a title with the Taylor Swift album released the same year, it was vastly different in musical style, thanks to help from Missy Elliot, Stargate, Salaam Remi and Wyclef Jean. Two years later, Sullivan is back with her follow-up, Love Me Back, and she gets an assist again from Elliot and Remi, as well as contributions from Ne-Yo, No I.D. and Los da Mystro. When MTV News caught up with Sullivan, she explained that she hoped to overcome the sophomore slump on this project. “This is my sophomore album, I definitely felt a lot of pressure during the beginning of it, but I kind of just released it and that’s when everything started to flow,” Sullivan said. “So I’m excited what people have to say about it.” The singer has released two singles — “Holding You Down (Goin’ in Circles)” and “10 Seconds” — from the album, which has been getting high scores from reviewers. Sullivan said this time around she wanted to show fans a different side of herself. “I think you’ll definitely see a softer side,” she said. “You’ll still get some fire — I can’t give that up — but definitely going to get a softer side. There are different sides of love, good and bad.” What do you think of Jazmine Sullivan’s new album? Share your reviews in the comments! Related Artists Jazmine Sullivan

Bono Calls ‘Spider-Man’ Musical ‘Pop-Up, Pop-Art Opera’

U2’s The Edge describes Broadway’s ‘Turn Off the Dark’ as ‘something that hasn’t been done before.’ By Rick Marshall Bono Photo: MTV News The budget-busting Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” made its long-awaited debut last weekend to preview audiences, and though Peter Parker’s bow was marred by production miscues and a laundry list of problems , one issue that audiences didn’t seem to have a problem with was the music. According to U2 bandmates Bono and The Edge, who composed the production’s score, that’s because comic books and rock and roll music are a natural fit. “There’s always been a thing with punk rock bands and comics,” Bono told MTV News during an interview last week. “It’s always been there. Even the Ramones, who are also from Queens [New York] like Peter Parker and Mary Jane, they covered the theme to Spider-Man.” “It goes through all, not just rock and roll culture, it’s in modern art,” he continued. “You see it in Roy Lichtenstein’s work, all the pop artists’ work; they all sample from comics.” Featuring high-flying stunts and a multitude of moving set pieces that put the audience in the middle of the action when Spider-Man battles Green Goblin, Carnage and the rest of the show’s villains , “Turn Off the Dark” is treading new ground. In fact, the ambitious uses to which director Julie Taymor has put the project’s record-breaking budget have effectively distanced it from its peers — and caused some confusion when it comes time to describe the show. “It’s like a graphic novel, but a three-dimensional one,” Bono ventured. “I’m calling it a pop-up, pop-art opera, because I’m pretentious. Julie’s calling it what?” “I think she’s calling it a rock-and-roll circus drama,” The Edge answered. “We don’t really know what to call it, because there are so many aspects to it,” he explained. “A great night out. I think that’s what it is.” The Edge acknowledged a similar difficulty in comparing “Turn Off the Dark” with anything that came before it. “It is elements of rock and roll, it’s elements of circus, it’s elements of opera, of musical theater,” he said. “It is so many different things, and when we started the process, we promised we’d do something that hasn’t been done before. And really, we, I think, have managed to do that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Natalie Portman Still Feels ‘Aftershocks’ Of ‘Black Swan’

‘It was the first thing I’ve ever done that was this physically demanding on top of an emotionally demanding part,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” Photo: Fox Searchlight For as beautiful and ethereal as the world of ballet appears to be, whether via live performance or in movies, Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman have gone to great lengths to shatter that pristine exterior in their new film, “Black Swan,” which arrives in theaters Friday. When MTV News caught up with Portman, we asked her what she went through in order to get into her character’s dark and disturbing world. “It was really extreme,” Portman said of her physical commitment to the role. “And I definitely felt both physical and mental aftershocks from the experience, because it was the first thing I’ve ever done that was this physically demanding on top of an emotionally demanding part,” she said. “And it’s great. I mean, the kind of discipline that it demands also puts you in that space for the acting part. But yeah, it affects you in ways. I’ll probably figure out how it affected me in, like, five years. I’ll look back and go, ‘Oh, that’s why I did that and that and that.’ ” Portman also said that, although she and Aronofsky first discussed the project nearly a decade ago, she needed more age and experience to tap into certain aspects of her character. “For me, it’s really about someone going from a position, an artistry where you’re trying to please other people, to a position where you’re finding pleasure yourself,” she said. “And Vincent [Cassel]’s character, though it seems that he’s sort of puppeteering this character, he is really guiding her towards becoming an artist and is really teaching her how to find her own pleasure and make a true expression of herself, that it’s about her.” The 29-year-old went on to say that she related to her character finally realizing that it’s not her job to make others happy. “It’s about breaking out of a system where you’re easily replaceable by the next girl who looks like you. And I feel like my 20s were about that, and probably into my future, I’m sure it’ll continue being that way,” Portman said. “But the older you get, the less you care about what other people think and the more you just want to be your true self and express your true self.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Black Swan.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
