BP’s Atlantis: Another Catastrophic Accident Waiting to Happen? Facts on Atlantis, BP and the Administration

May 17th, 2010 BP’s Atlantis: Another Catastrophic Accident Waiting to Happen? The Gulf of Mexico is currently reeling from the human and environmental tragedy unfolding after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon, an offshore oil platform. The Horizon, operated by BP, exploded on April 20, 2010, killing 11 workers, injuring many others and spilling millions of gallons of oil into the ocean. While the cause of the Horizon explosion is being investigated, it is important to note that BP has a devastating history of accidents and evading government oversight. Worse yet, an even bigger tragedy in the Gulf could be looming. An internal BP email admits that a “catastrophic” accident is possible at another one of its platforms, the BP Atlantis. An accident at this platform could result in a spill that is many times larger than the one currently unfolding from the Deepwater Horizon. BP Atlantis poses a serious, immediate and potentially irreparable threat to the Gulf of Mexico’s marine environment, oil workers and communities. BP’s Atlantis platform became active during the Bush administration in October of 2007. Located in “Hurricane Alley,” more than 150 miles from New Orleans at a water depth of more than 7,000 feet, it is one of the deepest moored semisubmersible oil and gas platforms in the world. In August of 2008, a BP contractor made a startling discovery about Atlantis: The company was operating the massive Atlantis platform without proper up-to-date and engineer-approved documentation. Some of the problems included: * More than 6,000 critical documents — including those for pipelines, flowlines, wellheads and other important systems — did not have the required engineering documentation. * Over 85 percent of the project’s subsea piping and instrument diagrams, critical documents for operating the platform, were not approved by engineers. * Many of its safety shutdown system logic diagrams were not up to date. * Over 95 percent of its subsea welding documents had no final engineering approval, calling into question the safety of the welds. Workers clean oil from the Horizon spill from a beach in South Pass, Louisiana. Photo by the U.S. Coast Guard. Atlantis is no small threat. An internal BP email characterized the situation as having the potential for “catastrophic operator errors.” Worse yet, Atlantis is operating in deeper water than the Deepwater Horizon. A worst-case scenario oil spill from Atlantis would exceed the Exxon Valdez spill in only two days, and be many times larger than the spill from the Horizon explosion. BP’s Big Oil Profits The BP group is the largest oil and gas producer and one of the largest gasoline retailers in the United States, and in 2008 was the fourth-biggest company in the world. In 2009, BP was the largest producer in the Gulf of Mexico and had pre-tax profits of $25.1 billion. BP Evades Compliance and the Federal Government Fails to Take Action Despite questions from Food & Water Watch and Members of Congress, BP has chosen to deny the problems at Atlantis. The company went so far as to send a letter to Congress saying that it only learned of the allegations recently and claimed they were unsubstantiated. However, BP’s own documents show that BP has known about these problems for years. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS), the primary federal agency responsible for ensuring that all aspects of oil, gas, leasing, exploration, development and production activities are conducted safely, hasn’t been doing its job. The agency did almost nothing when the whistleblower and Food & Water Watch first reported the problems at BP Atlantis and alerted members of Congress. An aerial view of the progress of the Horizon oil spill off the coast of Louisiana as of May 9, 2010. Photo by NASA. It was only after 19 members of Congress requested an investigation that MMS said it would conduct an investigation starting in March 2010. By May 2010, however, according to an agency response to a Food & Water Watch Freedom of Information Act request, the agency admitted that it had not and would not take any steps to investigate. Take Action to Shut Down BP Atlantis Tell President Obama to shut down Atlantis. Given the seriousness of the situation, production at the Atlantis platform must be immediately suspended until it can be proven safe. In addition, President Obama needs to order a review of all deepwater platforms in operation and overhaul offshore drilling regulations to reflect public interests, not private profits. Take action today by going to spillthetruth.org. Visit www.foodandwaterwatch.org/press/atlantis for more information. The agency, along with a former BP document controls subcontractor, maintains the Department of the Interior has allowed BP Atlantis to operate without documented, approved final engineering drawings considered critical to safe operation. After Years of Work, Guillermo del Toro Bolts From The Hobbit

Guillermo del Toro has been attached to direct The Hobbit for two years, and he’s even been quietly auditioning actors for it over the last month (including one recent alum of Movieline’s Verge feature — guess who!), but it’s been impossible for him to proceed as planned with the Lord of the Rings prequel without a firm greenlight from the in-turmoil, unsold MGM. Therefore, he announced today, he’s leaving the project.

‘Prince Of Persia’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Before getting in the sand with Jake Gyllenhaal, study up on the video game-turned-movie. By Eric Ditzian Jake Gyllenhaal in ‘Prince of Persia’ Photo: Walt Disney Back in October 1989, the first “Prince of Persia” game swept onto Apple computers. Two decades and more than a dozen video game titles across countless platforms later, the first big-screen adaptation of the series is hitting theaters. Your hero is Jake Gyllenhaal, with his windswept hair, his prominently displayed abs and his penchant for all manner of crazy stunts. Gyllenhaal plays Dastan, a pauper-turned-heir to an ancient throne, who finds himself in possession of one wicked cool gadget: a dagger that is like a really, really old version of Marty McFly’s DeLorean, in that it can thrust its user back in time (albeit not very far). Thus, your film is called “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” and it arrived Friday (May 28). You don’t need your own time-traveling weapon to catch up on everything there is to know about the action/adventure flick. That’s because MTV News is here with another cheat sheet, pulling together everything — videos, interviews, photos and more — you’ll need to be up to speed before heading to the cinema. Reconstructing the Ancient World Producer extraordinaire Jerry Bruckheimer was pushing forward with development of the project in 2007 — with an eye toward a summer 2009 release — when the writers’ strike hit . But shooting didn’t actually begin until the summer of ’08, and eventually the movie was pushed back to its current date on the calendar. Before then, of course, Gyllenhaal came aboard in his starring role (the actor’s first action-hero turn) and was shortly joined by Alfred Molina, Ben Kingsley and Gemma Arterton. In August of ’08, we got our first (shirtless) look at Gyllenhaal as Dastan . Nine months would pass before the first official glimpse of “Persia” arrived, as Bruckheimer debuted the film’s first footage . A few months later, a poster popped up online . This time, Gyllenhaal had put on a shirt but gained two swords and a whole lot of funky, gold-bedecked armor. More production photos appeared shortly thereafter. “I can say right now, this will reinvent the video game adaptation,” Gyllenhaal told us . “This will finally pull off and does finally pull off what everybody hopes that video game adaptations would.” The Desert Comes to Life October brought us the movie’s first trailer , showing us the production’s epic scope, some CGI-assisted time travel and loads of sword-clanging battle scenes. And, of course, there was a whole lot of flirty banter between Gyllenhaal and his onscreen love interest, Arterton . We started to understand why director Mike Newell told MTV News that Gyllenhaal was a “thinking woman’s action hero.” Super Bowl Sunday delivered the flick’s TV spot (more swords, more CGI sand), and a month later, the second trailer dropped (yet more sand, yet more swords). And then MTV News debuted our own take on “Persia,” a Lego-inspired remix of the trailer . We Are ‘Persia’ As the release of “Persia” approached, the cast and crew started doing the publicity rounds. In mid-May at the Los Angeles red-carpet premiere , Gyllenhaal revealed the reasons behind taking the role, his first as an action hero after years populating fare more directed at the art-house set. “I’ve seen a lot of my peers starting to not take themselves so seriously and make really fun, big films, and I was itching to try my hand at it,” he told us. “I think maybe as I’ve gotten a little bit older, I feel like I don’t want to take myself so seriously anymore. I think before, as much as those movies mean to me, and they continue to mean to me, it’s time to have a little fun too.” Arterton, meanwhile, has become a blockbuster vet , what with “Persia” and “Clash of the Titans.” “I mean, guys are always playing soldiers and warriors, [but] there’s not many roles for women like it,” she told us. “I really threw myself into it and did a lot of my own stunts, which I’m really, really proud of. I always sort of saw myself as a bit of a stunt girl anyway. I’m quite reckless.” Might she have a chance to be reckless again in ancient Persia? The film is undoubtedly set up as a franchise. Now the box-office receipts just have to make one financially feasible. “If there was an opportunity and people did respond to it, then of course,” Gyllenhaal said about a sequel . “I love this world. Whenever you finish a movie, you’re always like, ‘Aw, we could have done this or could’ve done that.’ And given the opportunity to do it even better than we’ve done it would be awesome.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . T.I. Says He’s ‘Reppin’ ‘ For Lil Wayne While He’s In Jail

‘His daughter and my daughter, they’re real, real close,’ Tip says. By Shaheem Reid T.I. Photo: Sam Hendrick T.I. says he’ll always have Lil Wayne ‘s back. Just a few short months ago, Tip was in Wayne’s shoes , having to put his career on hold and telling his loved ones goodbye while he served time in prison. “Yeah, I speak to him. Sure,” Tip said earlier this week in the MTV Newsroom when asked if he’s in contact with Weezy. Tip said their relationship is a lot deeper than trading 16 bars on each other’s songs. “Well, his daughter and my daughter, they’re real, real close,” Tip explained. “My daughter spends the night with them, his daughter comes spend the night with us. I told him, ‘Whatever I can do. Whatever it is that’s within my power’ … I know how it is with kids, especially with a period of time like that. “Even though it may seem like a short time — to the media, it may seem like ‘He got off easy’; to everybody, it may seem like ‘It’s only a couple of months’ — to a child, that’s an eternity,” he continued. “So I’m like, ‘Whatever I can do, it’s all good.’ I just let him know there’s people out here who’s still reppin’ for him, people who will go above and beyond to do whatever it needs to be done.” While sitting down with MTV News, Tip also revealed that while he was incarcerated, Eminem was a peer that supported him . “Especially since I went through my situation [with having to go to prison]. [He would] just kinda remind me that ‘I’ve been through dark period in my life too. You’re gonna make it. You’re one of the ones we need, so you’re gonna make it. Stand tall and walk the walk,’ ” Tip said. “He just made it a point to always reassure me of the spot that I hold in this thing that we got called hip-hop. It was incredibly helpful. It was incredibly noble of him, in my eyes, to even take the time out to reach out to me. We continue to stay in touch,” Tip said. “He wrote me since I was in the joint. We’ve spoken several time since I’ve been back home. We maintain a healthy relationship.” Next up, Tip is releasing a project straight to the streets and Internet on Thursday — for free. It’s called F— a Mixtape and is hosted by DJs Drama and MLK. Lil Wayne guests on the project. Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: T.I. Related Artists T.I. Lil Wayne

Reflection Eternal Flexed ‘Acting Skills’ In ‘Midnight Hour’ Video

‘It brought us out of what we normally do — the real hard hip-hop videos,’ Hi-Tek says of clip with partner Talib Kweli. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway, DJ Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli Photo: MTV News When Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek first debuted as Reflection Eternal 10 years ago , the duo’s most well-known visual stemmed from their breakout hit “The Blast.” The video for that song found Kweli and Tek sitting on a park bench outside a housing project as they rapped in a rainstorm — the epitome of the underground hip-hop aesthetic at the time. These days, the duo’s creative process is far different. After individually pursuing musical projects in the ensuing decade, Reflection Eternal were ready to step out of their comfort zone when they came together again for their new album Revolutions Per Minute. The pair took a novel direction on the Alex Moors-directed clip for “Midnight Hour,” a Doo-Wop inspired number. “I think it’s more conceptual. It brought us out of what we normally do — you know, the real hard hip-hop [videos],” Hi-Tek told MTV News of the video, which features Estelle. “It gave us a chance to get our acting skills on, to have fun with a video as opposed to being so serious about it. … [Instead], we just had fun with the music.” “It’s just a look, we were going for a certain vibe,” Kweli added. “Graphically artistic.” The opening shot shows a record spinning before the camera pans up to reveal Estelle crooning the chorus into a 1950s-style microphone. Kweli and Hi-Tek are dressed sharply in conservative looks: a slim-fitting suit, tie, and glasses for rapper Kweli, and a cardigan, bow tie, and newsboy cap for the producer. The video is mostly performance-based and centers on the three collaborators singing and dancing. According to Hi-Tek, the song was originally slated for Estelle’s debut album. But when it didn’t make it to the Brit singer’s Shine, the track went unused for two years until finally landing on the hip-hop duo’s Revolutions. Reuniting with Kweli for their sophomore set gave the song a new release opportunity. “I was working on joints for her album, and I was working on my third [solo] album and we cut two records,” Tek explained. “One for my album and [one for Estelle’s], which we wanted to submit for the project, but it was too late for her album. It was sitting for two years, and I played it for Kwe and he loved it. I didn’t really think it was a record for our album, but we made it work. And it’s a classic piece of music, so it should be heard rather than sitting in my crates.” What do you think about Reflection Eternal’s “Midnight Hour” video? Let us know in the comments! Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato Dish On New Seasons of ‘JONAS,’ ‘Sonny’

‘We take the band and move it out to L.A.,’ Joe says of a change of scenery on the Disney Channel show. By Jocelyn Vena Jonas Brothers Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News The Jonas Brothers are taking their show on the road this summer. The guys have given the next installment of “JONAS” a new name: “JONAS L.A.” The JoBros are trying their luck in the City of Angels, and they think fans will enjoy the change of scenery. “We’re excited for the TV show to come out. It’s something we’ve been working on since February and looking forward for everyone to be seeing it,” Joe told MTV News about the show, premiering in June. “We take the band and move it out to L.A., where we’re all trying to do different, individual projects.” While the plot of the show seems vaguely influenced by real-life events ( Joe recently teased that he and his brothers are working on solo projects), fans might be surprised by the new format of the show. “I think what’s really neat is it’s the first time the Disney Channel is doing a continuous story line,” Kevin added. “Every episode is ‘Next time, on “JONAS” ‘ or ‘Last time on “JONAS.” ‘ It allows the characters to grow and you follow them through relationships, the good and the bad.” Like the JoBros, tourmate Demi Lovato is also looking forward to finding love on her show, “Sonny With a Chance.” “There’s definitely more romance this season finally between Chad and Sonny,” she said of the show, which kicks off this summer. “So you can see how that evolves with the cast of ‘So Random,’ how they react to Chad and Sonny’s new flame.” She also said fans should look forward to Joe Jonas making a cameo this season, as well as Raven-Symon

Lindsay Lohan Ordered To Wear Alcohol-Monitoring Bracelet By Judge

Actress lost bid to ease the restrictions of her probation. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan arrives at court Monday (May 24) Photo: Toby Canham/ Getty Images On Monday (May 24), a stern Superior Court judge warned troubled actress Lindsay Lohan that she needs to keep on the straight and narrow if she wishes to avoid a return trip to jail . After Lohan missed her initial court date last week after claiming that her passport was stolen while she was attending the Cannes film festival in France, CBS News reported that a “somber and concerned” looking Lohan appeared in a Beverly Hills, California, courtroom and lost a bid to ease the restrictions of her probation. Wearing a dark gray suit, Lohan appeared in court with her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, who told Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel that her client was scheduled to start filming a movie in Texas soon. The judge was not swayed and said the actress may have to delay the project, ordering Lohan to attach a SCRAM alcohol-monitoring bracelet to her ankle that will require her to undergo mandatory drug testing every week in the Los Angeles area if she wishes to stat free on bail. Revel also set a probation violation hearing for July 6 to following Lohan’s failure to attend last week’s scheduled hearing. In an interview with Hollywood TV published Monday, Lohan argued that she doesn’t need jail or rehab, saying, “I don’t see what reason I would go to prison for. I’ve been more than compliant with everything having to do with the court system.” Though she has frequently been pictured partying until all hours of the morning, Lohan said she didn’t think she needed to make a return trip to rehab. “I don’t see why I would even have to do that,” she said, “considering I’ve been in compliance with everything that occurs when you’re in the court system for two DUIs.” According to TMZ , (Lohan must begin wearing the SCRAM bracelet — which she wore in 2007 following her plea in the DUI cases — within 24 hours and attend all her scheduled alcohol education classes at least once a week. If Revel determines that Lohan violated her probation by not attending her alcohol education classes as ordered, she could face a jail sentence of up to 180 days.
