Will Demi Lovato Help Britney Spears On ‘X Factor’?

‘I believe Demi’s bubbly personality and kindness will prove to bring Britney out of her shell,’ says Celebuzz editor Amber James. By Gil Kaufman Britney Spears, LA Reid, Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato Photo: Britney Spears via Facebook It’s always hard being the new girl in school. But when Britney Spears makes her debut in the fall as the fresh judge on the panel of “X Factor” , she’ll have come fine company in the form of Demi Lovato . With show creator Simon Cowell and record label boss L.A. Reid returning as the wily veterans with decades of experience in the game, Demi and Britney will be the relative newbies in the mix. The two women will also have something else in common: Both were child stars who grew up in the public eye and then struggled through a series of headline-grabbing difficulties only to brush themselves off and regain their star status. “I think it’s good for both of them to have each other on the show,” People magazine senior writer Joey Bartolomeo said. “For one thing, because they’re both new to [‘Factor’] and it’s not one person coming in to be with three other judges. They have each other.” Their paths, and struggles, have been very different, but Bartolomeo said the two can likely relate to each other on a personal level, though we shouldn’t expect them to do any therapeutic work on live TV. “Everyone loves a good comeback story,” she said. “Britney has been doing well the past couple of years … but seeing her on a weekly basis with this kind of job is another step in that process … People want to root for people to have success; now they have two people on a show who’ve been through a lot, and people will tune in to see how they are.” Lovato, 19, went from being the young star of such Disney shows as “Sonny With a Chance” and “Camp Rock” to a successful touring and recording career that was derailed in 2010 when she entered a rehab center for physical and emotional issues. She has since become a spokesperson for anti-bullying causes, spoken out about her body-image issues, eating disorder, depression, self-abuse and substance problems. Spears, 30, also came up in the Disney machine as a star on “The New Mickey Mouse Club,” and after a series of erratic incidents and public meltdowns, she ended up in a rehabilitation facility in 2007 and was put on a psychiatric hold in January 2008 after refusing to give up her two children to their father, ex-husband Kevin Federline. While Lovato has spoken publicly about her struggles and appears to have gotten her career back on track, Spears has been kept on lockdown by her team. The singer is under a strict conservatorship that has handed control of her assets to her father and, recently, her boyfriend/agent, Jason Trawick. Britney’s career has rebounded, with hit albums, singles and tours, but she has participated in only sporadic press interviews, which were, by most accounts, tightly controlled and allowed for little deviation from a predetermined script. “I think they could help support each other, but their [personal] problems are very different,” said Us Weekly senior music editor Ian Drew, who questioned the choice of Spears for the “Factor” panel. “Knowing the way Britney works, nobody is going to be able to speak to her. It’s a very odd choice. … I don’t know what Demi will add [either].” Drew said he understood “X Factor” had to add two new judges because of the structure of the show, but he wonders how the pair will fit into the mix. “Demi is very honest and says what’s on her mind, so maybe they need someone like that,” he said. “But I don’t think anyone will tune in to see Demi.” Celebuzz editor Amber James also acknowledged that the women have dealt with their problems in totally different ways, but said their shared struggle might add an interesting dynamic to the show as it tries to build on the first season’s solid-but-not-smashing success. “I believe Demi’s bubbly personality and kindness will prove to bring Britney out of her shell,” predicted James. “They seem like they’d bounce off each other well and provide a nurturing and safe atmosphere, where Britney can really get into her role, without fear of saying the wrong thing and truly be herself.” And even if they don’t become instant besties, the pair will at least be able to fend off the intimidating presences of Cowell and Reid while trying to find their feet on the show. “Maybe the two of them will gang up on Simon and L.A.,” Bartolomeo said. It includes appearances from Lindsay Lohan and Perez Hilton. The fourth season of the show, set to premiere this fall, will follow the graduating class of McKinley High as they pursue their dreams outside of New Directions. Many fans have been wondering how the show will press on outside of the high school setting, and with the network expected to hold its upfront presentation in New York on Monday (May 14), those questions should get some answers. Fox is expected to make a number of announcements at the event. Maurice Sendak, Author Of ‘Where The Wild Things Are,’ Dead At 83

Sendak, best known for ‘Wild Things’ and ‘In the Night Kitchen,’ was known for his dark-edged humor and unconventional approach. By Gil Kaufman Maurice Sendak Photo: David Corio/Getty Images Beloved children’s author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, author of the classic boyhood adventure tale “Where the Wild Things Are,” died on Tuesday (May 8) at the age of 83. The New York Times reported that Sendak’s death was a result of complication from a recent stroke. Controversial, irascible and not entirely convinced that he was a children’s author, Sendak wrote literate, dark and moody picture books that explored the anxieties and fears of children, and their parents. Best known for 1963’s “Wild Things,” Sendak also wrote and illustrated the equally groundbreaking “In the Night Kitchen” (1970) and 1981’s “Outside Over There,” which completed a trilogy started with “Wild Things.” The self-taught author couldn’t be bothered with the traditions of children’s books, in which the Times noted, “young heroes and heroines were typically well scrubbed and even better behaved; nothing really bad ever happened for very long; and everything was tied up at the end in a neat, moralistic bow.” Instead, his subjects were often rude, selfish, obstinate and occasionally annoying and sometimes they ran away from home, or were kidnapped or, worst of all, their parents disappeared. Sendak’s illustrations looked like sepia-toned pages from a a 19th-century etching, sprinkled with sly wordplay and references that his youngest readers were unlikely to understand. Though not prolific, Sendak’s work was highly influential. In addition to the abovementioned books, he also created 1960’s “The Sign on Rosie’s Door,” the 1962 boxed set collection of four tiny booklets called “The Nutshell Library” and 1967’s “Higglety Pigglety Pop!” His first writing and illustration effort in 30 years, 2011’s “Bumble-Ardy,” told the story of an orphaned pig who throws a wild birthday party for himself. In addition to his writing, Sendak also designed theater sets and illustrated dozens of other works, including ones by such legendary authors as Hans Christian Andersen and Herman Melville to William Blake and Leo Tolstoy. But amid all the accolades for his work, it was the story of “Wild Things” hero Max that captured the hearts and minds of generations of readers. The irritable boy who likes to wear a wolf costume and sets sail for unforeseen adventures after being sent to his room without dinner was adapted by director Spike Jonze
 into a moody feature film
in 2009. He was also the subject of a documentary, “Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak,” by Lance Bangs, which was released by late Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch’s
Oscilloscope Laboratories. His books were not always a hit with some critics, who complained about the horrifying monsters in “Wild Things” and the nudity of the young hero of “Night Kitchen,” which subjected the book to censorship. But Sendak was undeterred, arguing that life is full of horrors and that children are not immune to the reality of death, loneliness and confusion. Born in Brooklyn, New York on June 10, 1928, Maurice Bernard Sendak was the son of Polish Jewish immigrant parents. The deaths of much of his extended family in the Holocaust imbued him with a sense of mortality early in life, which could explain the often bleak, danger-filled nature of many of his books and the peril of the children he wrote about. He was also a sickly child, which resulted in many days and weeks in bed that allowed his fertile imagination to bloom. He began his professional career as an illustrator working on window displays for F.A.O. Schwarz and segued into illustrating other author’s children’s books in the 1950s before venturing off to write his own books. A solitary man by nature, Sendak lived in Ridgefield, Connecticut with his companion of 50 years, psychiatrist Eugene Glynn, who died in 2007, as well as his dogs and his beloved Mozart records. Sendak appeared on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” earlier this year and shared his wit and wisdom about children’s books with the host. “There is something in this country that is so opposed to understanding the complexity of children,” he said of the controversy kicked up by some of works. “I don’t write for children. I write … and somebody says, ‘That’s for children.’ I didn’t set out to make children happy or make life better for them or easier for them.”

More Divorce Drama: Deion Sanders Gets Temporary Custody Of Children, Pilar Must Stay 500 Yards Away From Their Home

Deion Sanders Gets Temporary Custody Of Children Pilar is somewhere PISSED!! A Texas judge ordered Deion Sanders’ estranged wife on Monday to stay at least 500 yards away from the former NFL star’s suburban Dallas home in a ruling stemming from a scuffle between the pair last month. State District Judge Ray Wheless also gave the Hall of Famer temporary custody of the former couple’s children pending a full custody hearing, and ordered that the children undergo psychological counseling. Wheless ruled that the injuries to Pilar Sanders, which she alleged her husband inflicted during an April 23 scuffle at their $5.7 million home in Prospect, were a result of Deion Sanders defending himself from her assault. Wheless said that since Deion Sanders experienced no pain, it was only simple assault, which is punishable by a fine. Following that altercation, Deion Sanders tweeted that she’d attacked him and he posted a photo of his children filling out police reports. He later removed the photo. The ruling came at the end of three days of hearings in the Sanders’ divorce case. Messages left for attorneys for both Deion and Pilar Sanders were not returned Monday night. But a message posted on Deion Sanders’ Twitter account late Monday read: “GOD IS SO GOOD! DON’T EVER DOUBT HIM NO MATTER HOW YOUR SITUATION LOOKS. TRUST HIM PLEASE. HE IS SO FAITHFUL.” This divorce is getting uglier and uglier each day. We hope that they are able to end things amicably eventually, before Pilar ends up like 50 Cent and Floyd Money Mayweather’s jawns. Source

Is Two Can Play That Game the Original Think Like a Man?

While Think Like A Man may have conquered the domestic box office two weekends in a row – an impressive feat for what Hollywood execs refer to as an “urban comedy” – there’s no question that the film’s success is as much due to the popular self-help book on which it is based as it is to its comedic merits. Roger Ebert hit the nail on the head in his review , remarking: “The movie’s mistake is to take the book seriously. This might have worked as a screwball comedy or a satire, but can you believe for a moment in characters naive enough to actually live their lives following Steve Harvey’s advice?” The funny thing is that the screwball version film Ebert would have liked to see actually exists — and is infinitely superior to the more dramatic, contemporary incarnation. That film is Two Can Play That Game , Mark Brown’s hilarious entry in the battle-of-the-sexes subgenre. A distant descendant of true screwballs (most notably The Awful Truth , which depicts a recently divorced couple’s attempts to derail one another’s new romances), Two Can Play That Game is, like Think Like A Man , anchored by a character explaining dating rules and philosophy to the audience. However, in this film that character actually has skin in the game – in fact, she’s its heroine: Shante Smith (Vivica A. Fox) is an ad agency exec who dispenses advice to the audience (and her girlfriends) about her seemingly perfect “Ten Day Program” for keeping a straying boyfriend in check; when her own boyfriend Keith (Morris Chestnut) begins to stray, a battle of wits ensues. The Kevin Hart comedic-sidekick role is played here by Anthony Anderson, as Keith’s relationship consigliore. Anderson knocks the role out of the park, with a performance that easily steals the entire film. It’s true that the most dramatic moments of Think Like A Man – when the characters try to level with each other and Own Up To Their Mistakes – are the moments in which it feels the most deadened. Two Can Play That Game , alternatively, embraces its absurdity; like its finest performance, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. In one scene, when Anderson seconds the points Keith makes by shouting as if he’s at church, an organ and chorus suddenly appear on the soundtrack to emphasize the revelations the men are coming to about women. The film, at various points, informs us that the first law of thermodynamics explains how best to manipulate your partner; has Vivica A. Fox punch Gabrielle Union in the face; and, in the funniest scene, puts forth the theory that church is a better place to pick up promiscuous women than a nightclub. And while the film understands that it’s a light comedy, it’s not lacking for bombast. “This is way bigger than you,” Anderson tells Chestnut late in the film. “You’re doing this for all men across the country. You’re doing this for men all around the world!” With increasingly deranged anxiety, Anderson goes off the rails: “Pretty soon women are gonna be pulling these head trips on us, dog, and you know what’s gonna happen? We’re gonna be the ones cooking dinner! We’re gonna be the ones changing the diapers! We’re gonna be the ones washing the dishes! And you know what they’re gonna be doing? They’re gonna be sitting on our couches, watching football on our Sunday!” Between putting forth the misguided belief that people need to engage in psychological warfare to keep their partners in line and the propagation of all kinds of stereotypes and clichés, no one’s going to accuse either of these movies of responsibly depicting gender relations. But when choosing one to watch, a viewer is well-advised to pick a film that is fully aware of – and complicit in – its own absurdity. Zachary Wigon is a writer based in New York. His work has appeared in the New York Press, NYLON, and Filmmaker Magazine, among many other outlets. He tweets @zachwigon .

‘Avengers’ Star Samuel L. Jackson Bashes New York Times Critic’s Review

‘NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job! Let’s help him find one! One he can ACTUALLY do!’ Jackson tweets. By Gil Kaufman Samuel L. Jackson Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Is there anyone on the planet at this point who doesn’t know that Samuel L. Jackson is a man not to be trifled with? Whether it’s snakes at 20,000 feet or dopey college kids who try to rip off his boss, the highest-grossing actor of all time is a badass both on and off the screen. Which might explain why he was a bit miffed when, amid the almost universal acclaim
 for “The Avengers,”
he read the a review from New York Times critic A.O. Scott that was not entirely positive. The veteran critic wrote , “‘The Avengers’ is hardly worth raging about, its failures are significant and dispiriting … The light, amusing bits cannot overcome the grinding, hectic emptiness, the bloated cynicism that is less a shortcoming of this particular film than a feature of the genre.” But the part that likely stung the most was his takedown of Jackson’s role as eye patch-wearing Nick Fury, head of spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D., which Scott called, “more master of ceremonies than mission commander.” Say what again? “#Avengers fans, NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job!,” Jackson tweeted on Thursday. “Let’s help him find one! One he can actually do!” The blast set off some conversations with a few fans, including one who replied, “@SamuelLJackson the critic has a right to his opinion. Just because the movie has made a ton of money does not mean it is a good movie.” Considering that “The Avengers” has set some overseas box office records
and is on track to potentially smash U.S. high-water marks, Jackson replied, “Actually, sometimes IT DOES!” The back-and-forth kept going, with another disappointed Twitter user taking issue with Jackson’s furious anger and “irrational” response to the negative review, asking if people are still entitled to their own opinions? “That is My Opinion!” Jackson replied. “What’s irrational about it? They aren’t going to fire his jaundiced ass & You & I Know It!” Are you seeing “The Avengers” this weekend? Let us know in the comments section below or on Twitter!
