‘The Avengers’: The Reviews Are In!

Reviews are glowing for director Joss Whedon’s star-studded superhero epic. By Josh Wigler Scarlett Johansson in “The Avengers” Photo: Marvel Impossibly high expectations, assemble! The moment that Marvel fans far and wide have been waiting years for has arrived at last: “The Avengers,” directed by Joss Whedon and featuring a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, has finally landed in theaters nationwide. Anyone worried that Marvel couldn’t live up to its own hype with “Avengers” need only look at the reviews to see that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have indeed performed to the best of their ability. Not only is “Avengers” an international box-office success and a soon-to-be domestic hit, the film is also adored by critics, geeks and moviegoers of all other assorted shapes and sizes. Keep reading for a selection of the glowing “Avengers” reviews! The Man Behind The Curtain “As screenwriter, sharer of story credit with Zak Penn and director, Whedon is the key reason why this $220-million behemoth of a movie is smartly thought out and executed with verve and precision. It may be overly long at two hours, 23 minutes, but so much is going on you might not even notice. Whedon’s biggest success, creating TV’s ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ was nowhere near this scale. But he is a third-generation television writer who was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing ‘Toy Story,’ and he’s got an innate gift for bringing stories like this to life with the energy and intelligence that should be popular entertainment’s birthright but rarely is.” — Kenneth Turan, The Los Angeles Times Earth’s Mightiest Heroes “Downey’s Tony Stark remains driven by ego and genius, always on the verge of overreaching, while Hemsworth continues to navigate between two worlds. As a man out of time, unsure of how he fits into the modern world, or if he even wants to, Evans shoulders even more of the drama, becoming the heart of a film that’s filled with heroics, but also, if sometimes too fleetingly, concerned with the meaning of heroism. Fitting right in: Ruffalo’s laidback Banner, a characterization with echoes of the easy-living California dude he played in ‘The Kids Are All Right,’ Johansson’s haunted superspy, and Renner, whose steely intensity alone makes it easy to forget the unlikelihood of an archer, no matter how good, being able to hold his own among superhumans.” — Keith Phipps, The A.V. Club The Laugh Factor ” ‘The Avengers’ may be one of the funniest movies of the year. Whereas ‘Iron Man 2’ was overdose, having other leads to dilute Downey Jr.’s manic mouth helps Tony Stark finally land his punchlines. Evans is another standout, his fish-out-of-water predicament lending itself to comedy that clicks (‘I got that reference,’ Captain Steve Rogers timidly points out). But Hulk takes the cake, Whedon mining the towering green monster for all-out destruction and physical comedy. When Hulk smashes, he smashes big and Whedon’s clever timing is reminiscent of old Warner Bros. cartoons.” — Matt Patches, Hollywood.com The Big Fight “Much of this battle takes place in midtown Manhattan, where the neatest sequences involve Loki’s ginormous slithering, undulating snake-lizard-dragon machine, which seems almost to have a mind of its own and is backed up by countless snakelings. At one point, an Avenger flies into the mouth of this leviathan and penetrates its entire length, emerging at the business end. You won’t see that in ‘The Human Centipede.’ ” — Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun-Times The Final Word “It’s essentially six movies in one, which might account for the nearly 2 1/2 hour length. While it’s slow getting started, ‘The Avengers’ is a splashy superhero mash-up that should please breathless fanboys. It also has a broader appeal for mass audiences with its fast-paced comic banter and exhilarating action sequences under the capable helm of director/co-writer/unabashed fan Joss Whedon. Whedon weaves a story that allows each of the heroes to do what they do best. And while they may not have exactly equal time, audiences get enough of each to feel satisfied, but not sated. Clever work, indeed.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today Are you seeing “The Avengers” this weekend? Let us know in the comments section below or on Twitter ! Willy Wonka Auction: Anyone Wanna Buy Gene Wilder’s Costume?

The auction-happy crew at Profiles in History, which has previously unloaded Hollywood treasures ranging from Dorothy’s ruby slippers to the Dude’s sweater from The Big Lebowski , has got the 10-year-old in you right where they want it: Prepare yourself for the most comprehensive auction of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory memorabilia to date, featuring costumes, props and one of only two known Everlasting Gobstoppers in existence. Also: They will cost you. Via a press release just in from PiH : First up and most significantly is the Gene Wilder “Willy Wonka” signature costume. The costume consists of flamboyant purple velvet frock coat, wool & camelhair slacks, off-white shirt, distinctive purple & violet lamé vest with floral design and satin bow tie. Originally obtained from Michael D. Beinner, Director of Field Advertising and Publicity for Paramount Pictures who was gifted the costume following its promotional tour of several key cities around the U.S. Without doubt, one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable costumes in the history of film. It is estimated to fetch $80,000 – $120,000. Also up for auction are three iconic items from the collection of Julie Dawn Cole, who played “Veruca Salt.” First is an original screen-used Everlasting Gobstopper, one of only two known to exist. It comes with a notarized copy of a letter from Ms. Cole stating (in part), “The Everlasting Gobstopper was used in the Inventing Room Scene. Mr. Wonka gives each of the children one Everlasting Gobstopper each. Typically Veruca tries to wangle another one, if only she had succeeded! But at least I was allowed to keep this one.” It is expected to fetch $20,000 – $30,000. You can also own the Golden Egg, screen used by Julie Dawn Cole during the “I Want it Now,” musical number. The egg comes with a notarized copy of a letter from Ms. Cole stating (in part), “The Filming of this [Golden Egg] scene and Veruca’s demise was actually filmed on my 13th birthday. The egg was presented to me at the end of the day’s shoot as a birthday present.” The egg is fashioned from polystyrene foam painted gold and is expected to fetch $20,000 – $30,000. And there’s more , all going on the block in July . Sadly, no Oompa Loompas are to be found on the list (though one of those costumes is up for sale as well, a representative notes), and the beheaded chicken from the psychedelic-tunnel-trip montage doesn’t come with a Certificate of Authenticity, so caveat emptor, etc. [ Profiles in History ]

Westlife Call Beatles ‘The Ultimate Boy Band’

‘We’ll just leave right now,’ Nicky Byrne jokes when told Westlife are facing Beatles in third round of Battle of the Boy Bands. By Christina Garibaldi Westlife and The Beatles’ Paul McCartney and John Lennon Photo: Getty Images MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands is certainly heating up. We have seen some shocking eliminations throughout the first two rounds, with the Backstreet Boys , ‘NSYNC and New Kids on the Block all making early exits in the competition. And as we head into the Final Four on Wednesday, fans will be tirelessly voting for their favorites to move on, hoping to land a spot in the championship matchup. A clear fan favorite in this battle has been Irish boy band Westlife . The group so far has taken down the Backstreet Boys and O-Town, but in the Elite Eight round, they are up against the original boy band, the Beatles . We spoke to Westlife member Nicky Byrne via Skype from Dublin, Ireland, as the group rehearses for their final farewell tour, and he told us what he thought their chances were for beating their latest opponent. “We’ll just leave now, we’ll just leave right now,” Byrne laughed when told he was facing the Beatles. “The only thing we have in our favor is that our fanbase would still be very, I suppose, relatively young and want for Westlife to win. I mean, it goes without saying the Beatles are the ultimate boy band and nobody is ever going to take that crown.” Westlife still have a good chance of advancing to the next round. And if they continue to maintain momentum, they could ultimately face the new wave of boy bands, which Byrne admits he is a fan of. “You’ve got the Wanted coming through and One Direction , and it’s brilliant for them. I’ve met the guys, both bands, lovely guys, an Irish guy in each band, which is great,” Byrne said. “It’s brilliant for pop music. The Wanted, they’re supporting our stadium shows here in Ireland, so they’ll be our support band, so that’s pretty cool. I suppose a little bit of me probably thinks I wish I was 20 again to do it all over again. But you have to hold your hands up — we’ve had a wonderful time and it’s time to pass the reins on to someone else.” Voting for the Elite Eight in MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Wednesday, May 2. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Gotye Changes Tune On ‘Glee’ Cover

Singer says the show’s version of ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ was not ‘dinky,’ but ‘clever.’ By Gil Kaufman Gotye Photo: MTV News Did Australian singing sensation Gotye say he thought the “Glee” cover of his breakthrough hit “Somebody That I Used to Know” was “dinky and wrong” , “ultra-dry” and sounded like “it’s playing to you from a cardboard box?” Well, what he actually meant was that the version performed by Darren Criss and Matt Bomer on last week’s episode was “really clever.” According to The Hollywood Reporter , during a private performance at a Los Angeles club on Monday afternoon Gotye clarified his comments. He explained that, “The nature of using reverb and space in a recording can change your perception of how a sound appeals to you.” That was after he originally said, “They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop ‘Glee’ style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box,” which was actually meant as a compliment. See, what Gotye was referring to was, “This xylophone hook in my song — it’s kind of dinky not just in the cover version but the original song.” Aha! Furthermore, Gotye said he thought the interpretation of his hit on the choral drama was, “Really clever to transpose the song to two guys … It was a great idea.” Whatever Gotye thought of it, the cover was just what “Somebody” needed to get over the hump and top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. And Gotye wasn’t the first singer to slam the show (and/or creator Ryan Murphy), joining a list that includes the Foo Fighters
, former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash and Kings of Leon

It was one of many exciting fan encounters the band would have on Tuesday (April 24), as they were out in New York City promoting their self-titled U.S. debut EP and the release of their new video, “Chasing the Sun.” MTV News was on hand with the guys in the early hours Tuesday while they chilled in the “Today” show green room chatting, eating breakfast and goofing around with a fat cat and a dog named Ted, both of whom were on the show today as well. “We just arrived and we saw a 40-pound cat crawling across the floor,” group member Siva Kaneswaran told MTV News about the early morning wakeup call and the show’s other guest, a cat who is currently having his own moment chasing the sun. “This is the kind of stuff that happens to the Wanted. It’s too early for this,” he continued. “There’s lots of big stuff happening today and were gonna do some crazy things.” Before they performed “Chasing” and their hit single “Glad You Came” on the morning news show, Siva explained how the guys prep for an appearance on a show like “Today.” “We prepared for this show this morning by having cups of tea and Cheerios, good for the heart,” Siva, who declared he is not a morning person, shared. “Basically, just psych each other, gaze into each other’s eyes and get excited, and that’s what gets us through the day.” The “Today” show was the first of many media appearances the Wanted will make on Tuesday, leading up to their “MTV First” airing tonight at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV. ‘Catching Fire’: Why Hiring Francis Lawrence Makes Sense

We examine the director’s qualifications for the second installment in the ‘Hunger Games’ series. By Kevin P. Sullivan Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate On Thursday night, Lionsgate officially offered “Catching Fire” to director Francis Lawrence . The development was widely considered the next letdown in a series of disappointments for fans, who felt Gary Ross’ departure was a premature one. But based on what we know about ” Catching Fire ” and what Lionsgate was reportedly looking for in a replacement, Lawrence was by far the most likely choice. Here is why Francis Lawrence makes complete sense as the director for “Catching Fire”: He Can Do Action One of the major complaints about Ross’ direction of ” The Hunger Games ” was that he lacked experience shooting action sequences and it showed. If Lionsgate had to find a new director for the series’ second entry, choosing one who has more experience with higher-intensity scenes does makes sense. Though Lawrence’s name does not come with the prestige of the other directors on the shortlist, he has the most experience of any of them with directing a big-budget action film. He’s Relatively Inexpensive Early rumors of Ross’ exit had pegged money as the main stumbling block when trying to recruit the director for the second film. We know that Ross made most of his money from “The Hunger Games” on the back end, taking a much lower fee upfront. Lionsgate was reportedly looking to not spend a ton of money on the director for “Catching Fire,” and the up-and-coming directors filling out the shortlist more or less confirms that. What makes Lawrence different is that he has the mainstream success that the other independent film directors do not, but he’s probably just as willing to work for Lionsgate’s lowered fees. He Knows the Tone Lawrence’s first two films take place in worlds based largely in a reality not far from our own, but ones that add in fantastical elements. In ” I Am Legend ,” Will Smith’s character lives in (near) solitude in a post-zombie-vampire outbreak Manhattan, where he hunts the wild animals that now populate the city. Lawrence has established he can make a film set in a world vaguely resembling our own, so it’s not hard to imagine Lawrence being able to make the leap to Panem. He’s Done Romance Granted, it wasn’t great romance, but it counts. ” Water for Elephants ” was also based on a best-selling novel and could come in handy in dealing with the amped-up love triangle among Katniss, Peeta and Gale. Bennett Miller Wasn’t Available The Playlist originally reported that the race for the director’s position came down to two directors, Lawrence and Bennett Miller . The “Moneyball” director was clearly the more distinguished of the two, but he had spent the last few years developing ” Foxcatcher ,” a true-life story about the heir to the DuPont fortune who murdered an Olympic wrestler. In the past few months, Miller has seen “Foxcatcher” finally come together, adding Channing Tatum, Steve Carell and, just recently, Mark Ruffalo to the cast. If Miller would have signed on to direct “Catching Fire,” he would have had to further delay “Foxcatcher” just after getting development off the ground. ‘The Lucky One’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics find Zac Efron film to be typical Nicholas Sparks fare. By Fallon Prinzivalli Zac Efron in “The Lucky One” Photo: Warner Bros. In the film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel “The Lucky One,” Zac Efron plays Logan, a Marine who returns from Iraq in search of the woman he believes was his good luck charm overseas. He finds her (Beth, played by Taylor Schilling ) and learns she runs a dog kennel with her son Ben and grandmother Ellie. Despite Beth’s reservations, Ellie hires Logan to help with the work around the kennel, and Ellie ends up warming to the soldier. Overall, critics are not impressed with the Scott Hicks-directed movie, but their reviews are mixed. Some claim that the acting is bland and the storyline is the typical “boy-meets-girl” Sparks experience, while others believe the romance is “well-constructed” given the source material. Either way, the film is sure to appeal to the author’s fans and should fare well with romance lovers at this weekend’s box office. The Story “The Sparks-styled romance has almost become its own movie genre — predictable, pure of heart, sentimental and never straying from the boy-meets-girl basics, or the surface, for that matter — and in that ‘The Lucky One’ delivers.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The Romance “The central love story is well-constructed for what it is; it offers the requisite amount of fantasy with just a miniscule dollop of realism.” — James Berardinelli, Reelviews “Their love scenes, like every other element of Hicks’ film, are lighted in a way that gives everything an impossibly warm, romantic glow. You can roll your eyes, or you can give in.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press Zac Efron “Efron does fill out the hunky-guy uniform nicely. He’s no longer the scrawny teen from ‘High School Musical.’ But despite his promise in smaller movies like ‘Me and Orson Welles,’ here he’s all flat affect, taking bottled-up angst to an extreme where you never actually see it. He’s perfectly likable but never riveting, dropping the ball on the chance to portray the complicated psychology of a war veteran. Apart from one early scene in which he flinches at a video-game shooting, you never have the sense he’s dealing with combat repercussions.” — Sara Stewart, New York Post The Final Word “Part of the experience of a Nicholas Sparks movie is encountering revelations and reversals in the plot that challenge your sense of the preposterous. That’s how destiny works: unlikely incidents pile up [and] good intentions go awry … If realism is what you’re after, you’ll do better at ‘The Three Stooges.’ ‘The Lucky One’ is where you will find death, redemption and kisses in the rain.” — A. ‘Magic Mike’: Male Stripper Weighs In On Channing Tatum’s Moves

New York dancer gives MTV News his professional opinion on how authentic the ‘Magic Mike’ trailer is. By Jocelyn Vena Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Photo: Warner Bros Bachelorette parties, beefy dudes and dollar bills — oh my! It must mean that the “Magic Mike” trailer dropped. And, yes, the trailer is filled with lots of Channing Tatum goodness — read goodness as: he’s shirtless, a lot — as well as cameos from fellow hunks Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer. The trailer follows the story of Tatum’s character, Magic Mike, as he tries to balance his life as a stripper with a budding romance and his dreams of designing furniture. It seems that the Steven Soderbergh-directed flick, which opens in June, will have lots of heart and lots of laughs. Now, after watching the trailer several (hundred) times, MTV News decided to track down a real-life male stripper to rate just how authentic it really is. Here’s what we learned. The bachelorette party “The bachelorette party, the whole thing is totally legit,” New York-based dancer Steve Stanulis, who goes by the stage name Steve Savage, told MTV News about the trailer’s opening scene. “I mean, with the guys coming in as cops and the girls, like, getting all nervous. So, that’s pretty authentic. It looks pretty good.” The money “The whole thing with the singles? The funny thing is when I used to go to the bank, they’d be like ‘Oh, my god. Why do you have $500 in singles?’ ” Savage, who runs Savage Men and helped create “Stripped, The Play,” recalled of hitting the bank after a night of dancing like Magic Mike. “And that would be like the ongoing joke.” The dancing “Also, the show looks pretty good, the guys dancing and the whole shtick with each guy coming out with a different routine,” he said of several teased strip-club scenes that feature McConaughey and Tatum getting their shirtless grooves on. “They’re a little overly elaborate, with all the smoke and spinning, but again that’s not something you would really see. I mean we’re not going to see Fosse. I mean, they did a great job. All the guys look great as well. They’re totally believable as dancers.” The relationships “The whole rigmarole, as far as being in a relationship and being a stripper, 95 percent of the comments of the girlfriends or the significant others give are like, ‘When are you gonna give this up? When are you gonna get a real job?’ Or what have you,” he said of Tatum’s relationship with on-screen love, played by Cody Horn. “So, they really captured that as well, which is really funny.” The ambition “I also like the fact that he’s talking about being an entrepreneur because all these guys, well most of these guys, are not just strippers, they’re doing other things,” he explained of Tatum’s dream to make furniture for a living. The bottom line So, will Savage see the flick? “I would definitely go see it,” he said. “I would def recommend it. It looks good.” Are you excited to see “Magic Mike”? Let us know in the comments!

Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch Are ‘Savages’ In Oliver Stone’s Latest

‘She is beautiful and she is sexy. She is hot,’ legendary filmmaker says of Lively’s performance in his summer flick, out July 6. By Josh Horowitz Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson in “Savages” Photo: Universal Pictures When Oliver Stone releases a film, you’d better sit up and take notice. Whether he’s tackling the Vietnam War (as he did in a trilogy of films: “Platoon,” “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Heaven & Earth”), presidential scandals (another trilogy: “JFK,” “Nixon” and “W.”) or pulpy genre violence (“Natural Born Killers,” “U-Turn”), you can be sure he’ll give an audience member something to chew on. So when Stone signs on to direct some of the hottest young actors in Hollywood (Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson) in a tale of sex, drugs and violence, yeah, we’re interested. MTV News caught up with Stone to talk about his first legitimate summer release, “Savages” (set for a July 6 release), as well his distaste for most summer popcorn films, and his upcoming gargantuan take on nothing less than the history of the United States. MTV : The release date of “Savages” was shifted quite a bit. It’s now being released in the middle of a very competitive summer. Were you happy with that decision? Oliver Stone : I’ve never done a summer movie, believe it or not. Except for “Natural Born Killers,” but that was August, late summer. This is my first time out there in the big leagues. So I’m excited in a way. MTV : Do you think “Savages” will play well for that younger summer audience? Stone : I think it plays well. I don’t know that it would play completely to the “Hunger Games” crowd because we have a different kind of sexuality and the take on violence is real for us. It’s fun and exciting. It’s a wild ride. You don’t know what’s going to happen. I think the unpredictability is what makes it work. MTV : Can you give me a sense of the relationship at the heart of the story between the characters played by Blake, Taylor and Aaron. Stone : They are all friends and they believe in free love, and they happen to be growing some grass. One of them [Johnson] is doing good around the world. The other one [Kitsch] is an Afghanistan and Iraq veteran who’s his best buddy from school; they have a partnership. The girl [Lively] is from Laguna. They met on the beach, basically. MTV : It sounds like just about every hot young actor was in the running for these roles. Stone : I met with every pot dealer I could. [ Laughs ] For the girl, I had to meet a few of the younger newcomers because I did not know who they were. I saw [Blake’s] work and I was very impressed with “[The Private Live of] Pippa Lee.” And she was very strong in “The Town.” I think people that know her from “Gossip Girl” will be surprised. She is beautiful and she is sexy. She is hot. That’s what a lot of fans would say about her. MTV : Has “Savages” received a rating yet? Stone : We got a hard R. It’s an intense movie but it’s a different style than “Natural Born Killers.” It has a lush look. It has some of that sun-drenched romanticism that I like. It’s not just action, it is also romantic. MTV : “Savages” will be surrounded by some big summer blockbusters. You’ve managed to avoid tentpole movies, though you did almost direct a “Mission: Impossible” at one point. Stone : Well, we tried to make a “Mission” at that time, which was ahead of its time in terms of the story. I looked at it as a vehicle that was supersmart. [But] they could never pick a script. With “Mission Impossible,” you have to hit these beats all the time. MTV : It sounds like it’s not a regret for you. Stone : It’s all steroids now. I mean “Iron Man 2” is unwatchable, as is “Transformers 2.” It’s not my kind of moviemaking. “Savages” is a different kind of movie. It’s realistic and at the same time it has a bit of that summer pop feel. MTV : What’s the status of your TV series, “The Untold History of the United States”? Stone : That one’s a bitch. It’s a bitch in my butt. MTV : It will begin airing on Showtime in November? Stone : Yeah, we will make that for sure, but there are so many factors and fact checking. It’s a lot of work. It’s 21 hours and each hour has to work like a movie. I’m dealing with an important issue to me. That’s a legacy for me. Something that matters. It may not matter to most people, but it does matter to me. This is a perception of our time that is completely different from what we’re hearing in magazines and in our newspapers. We deal with all types of things, such as the nature of the atomic bomb, why was it used, why it should not have been used. It’s all kinds of stuff. Reagan’s legacy, our national security state, we go after all of it. MTV : Do you narrate it? Stone : Yes, I narrate it as well. Check out Oliver Stone’s “Savages” in theaters July 6, and “The Untold History of the United States” on Showtime in November. It’s Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies .
