NYC’s Beautiful People Spellbound By ‘Beautiful Creatures’ Premiere

As Lena, the spell-casting heroine of Beautiful Creatures , Alice Englert makes it snow in South Carolina, but she was powerless to stop the weather from stranding her in Baltimore for Cinema Society’s New York premiere of the movie. Fortunately, her co-stars Viola Davis  and Emmy Rossum  were on hand to introduce the movie to a VIP crowd of New Yorkers that, judging from the discussion at the post-premiere party at Cole’s Greenwich Village restaurant, came away impressed by the film’s performances and writing.   Although Beautiful Creatures is directed at the Twilight crowd, it’s much smarter and — for a supernatural teen love story — more realistic than the sparkly vampire franchise, thanks to Richard LaGravenese’s witty, thoughtful script and some excellent casting choices. With the exception of Rossum, the main teen cast members in Beautiful Creatures are not cut from the Team Edward, Jacob or Bella molds. Leading man Alden Ehrenreich  reminds me of a young Bill Hader from Saturday Night Live   with a dash of Jack Nicholson in the eyes and brows, and he’s got real charisma and range as Ethan, the book-devouring smart-ass who dreams of ditching his small-town life for New York City and falls for the exotic but troubled Lena when she transfers to his school. Englert, who is the daughter of Australian filmmaker Jane Campion , also does a great job of conveying the complexity of Lena, who’s tormented by the bitchiness of her Bible-thumping classmates and, yet, has the power to smote them all.  She’s also living with the knowledge that, on her 16th birthday in a few weeks, she will either “turn to the dark” and use her supernatural powers for evil, or “to the light.” And yet, though Lena’s fate (and Evan’s role in it), form the core of Beautiful Creatures,   the adults get plenty of scenery to chew. Emma Thompson and Jeremy Irons play two rival casters who battle each other over Lena’s fate, and their confrontation at a church meeting is one of the movie’s high points. Irons is particularly memorable as a sardonic, old-school Southern aristocrat fed up with the town’s shabby treatment of his niece. Among the boldfaced names that were in attendance at the screening and party, which Dior Beauty hosted:  Ivanka Trump, Debra Winger and her husband Arliss Howard, Crash director   Paul Haggis , Girls actor and filmmaker Alex Karpovsky, former Brady Bunch actress Eve Plumb and Dianne Vavra, public relations executive for Dior Beauty, which co-hosted the event with Cinema Society. Metallica Movie Heads To Theaters Via Resurrected Picturehouse Founder Bob Berney

The headline for moviegoers here is that the new feature Metallica Through the Never is headed to theaters. What is more significant is how it will get there. Longtime distribution figure Bob Berney is resurrecting a label he once headed, Picturehouse, to serve as CEO, while a veteran in the filmmaking scene in her own right, Jeanne Berney, will serve as president of the label, which will be based in New York. Metallica Through the Never stars members of the band as well as Dane DeHaan ( The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ) who plays a young band crew member. He is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a live set in front of a sold-out crown and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down. The re-fashioned Picturehouse will open the film August 9th. “Metallica’s way of doing things is to jump into unexplored creative endeavors with no safety net whatsoever,” said Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. “Putting this movie together for the last couple of years has been a pretty wild ride, and we’ve definitely done our share of flying without a net!  Bringing Bob and Jeanne and the new Picturehouse team in at this point provides us with a much needed level of security for the distribution of the film. Their spirit of independence and desire to work outside the box is something we can relate to in every way, and this makes them both a welcome addition and a natural fit in the Metallica family.” The new Picturehouse plans to acquire, market and theatrically release independent films from the U.S. and around the world, beginning with two to three films this year and increasing its output to four to five features in 2014 and six or seven in subsequent years it said Tuesday. Bob Berney helped launch the original Picturehouse in April 2005 as a joint venture between Time Warner’s HBO and New Line Cinema divisions. During that tenure, the company released Guilermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth which won three Oscars; Olivier Dahan’s La Vie en Rose (winner of two Academy Awards, including best actress for Marion Cotillard); Sergei Bodrov’s Mongol ; Patricia Rozema’s Kit Kittredge: An American Girl ; Robert Altman’s A Prairie Home Companion ; and Seth Gordon’s documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters . Time Warner later folded Picturehouse and New Line into the general Warner Bros. operations and the brand continued to live in the home entertainment and television releases of its films. Most recently Berney co-founded and served as president of theatrical distribution of FilmDistrict, overseeing the roll outs of Insidious, Soul Surfer, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark and Drive . Prior to Picturehouse he worked at IFC Films, where he acquired and oversaw the release of films including the $240-million surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Y Tu Mamá También . Later he served as president and partner of Newmarket Films, releasing features including Mel Gibson’s $370 million-grossing The Passion of the Christ as well as Monster , which earned Charlize Theron the Best Actress Academy Award; and Whale Rider , a little-known Toronto International Film Festival find that also received a Best Actress nomination. Newmarket sold its distribution operation to Time Warner as part of the formation of Picturehouse. Entertainment marketing veteran Jeanne Berney most recently served as Executive Vice President of Marketing at FilmDistrict. Before that, she was Executive Vice President of Marketing and Administration for Apparition. Jeanne Berney also served as Director of Public Relations and Marketing at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, where she was responsible for the campaigns for all of the Society’s year-round programs.

Head Of Chik-Fil-A Public Relations Dies Of Heart Attack! Was The Stress Over Their Stance On Gay Matrimony-dom Too Much For Him???

Chik-fil-A Public Relations VP Dies Of Heart Attack Amid Controversy Over Founders Stance Against Gay Marriage In the midst of a firestorm of controversy over the company founder’s stance on gay marriage , a publicity exec at Chik-Fil-A has died of a heart attack! The death of a prominent Chick-fil-A executive has sparked an onslaught of Twitter responses, with many linking the official’s passing to the fast food company’s recent controversies. Columbus Georgia’s WRBL News 3 reported that Donald A. Perry, the vice president of corporate public relations for Chick-fil-A, died of a heart attack July 27. “Don was a member of our Chick-fil-A family for nearly 29 years,” a company statement published in the Atlanta Journal Constitution read. “He was a well-respected and well-liked media executive in the Atlanta and University of Georgia communities, and we will all miss him.” News of Perry’s death, which was picked up by a number of high-profile media outlets, immediately generated heated debate on Twitter, perhaps not surprisingly given Chick-fil-A’s proclaimed anti-gay marriage stance, which has been the subject of countless headlines in recent weeks. “Okay, Chick-fil-A protesters, you win,” wrote one user. “You killed their head of PR. They’re for gay marriage now.” No doubt Perry was aware of what has become a public relations debacle for the Atlanta-based fast food chain, with both marriage equality supporters and opponents responding to the news in equal measure. In fact, he is credited at having released the company’s Facebook statement in response to Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy’s remark that the fast food company supports “the biblical definition of the family unit.” On July 19, Perry responded that “going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.” Poor guy. We’re not gonna go so far as to say that gays killed Don Perry but it seems pretty likely that all this drama did him in early. R.I.P. Check out a couple of the tweets on the subject below: Source

Bobbi Kristina Brown Bong Video: Released, Shocking!

Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, is seen hitting the bong HARD in a 2011 video posted by the National Enquirer on its new Enquirer Plus site . The oft-troubled 19-year-old was partying with friends who attend college in Statesboro, Ga., in March of last year, when the bong video was taken. The Enquirer video shows Bobbi Kristina smoking marijuana out a three-foot-tall bong, inhaling the smoke so deeply that she nearly collapses coughing. Bobbi Kristina Brown Bong Video In the video, Bobbi Kristina says, “Give me the lighter,” and then lights the bong, takes a huge hit, coughs and goes back for more … like a boss. “ Bobbi Kristina was staying with friends at the school and brought along a big bag of pot for the party,” a source at the party said of that epic night. “When I left at 6 a.m. the next day, she was still partying hard. Between tokes, Bobbi was drinking shots of Grey Goose and Skyy Blue vodka.” “She’s obviously a seasoned partier.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West: Totally in Love!!!

PR stunt, schmee-R stunt. Kanye West is totes in love with Kim Kardashian, at least according to Us Weekly sources. “They’re perfect for each other. He thinks she’s his Beyonce,” an insider says of Kanye’s feelings , adding that the rapper’s fallen “genuinely head over heels” for the infamous, voluptuous, expressionless-as-drywall reality star. Kim and Kanye have been friends since 2004, with this source claiming the latter pursued the former for a very long time. Why did Kardashian finally give in to the relationship with the loquacious rapper? We’ll have to ask her mom and/or public relations team. Kim herself has been surprisingly mum on the topic of a romance with Kanye , while Kris Humphries doesn’t care at all about the exploits of his ex.

Exclusive ‘Hunger Games’ Clip: Peeta’s Interview With Caesar

Don’t miss the ‘Hunger Games’ red-carpet premiere tonight at 8:30, streaming live from MTV News! By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate As the countdown to “The Hunger Games” grows shorter and shorter, fans have been craving as much of the tributes as they can possibly get. Luckily, we have a brand-new exclusive clip from the upcoming movie. Soon after they are chosen for the games, the tributes from District 12, Katniss ( Jennifer Lawrence ) and Peeta ( Josh Hutcherson ), go through the public relations wringer, including a broadcast interview with the eccentric TV personality Caesar Flickerman, played by a very blue-haired Stanley Tucci . In this exclusive clip, Peeta sits down to answer a few personal questions from Caesar before heading into the arena. Similarly, the cast and crew of “The Hunger Games” will have to face the judgments of the diehard fans of the book, when the film finally comes out on March 23. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz spoke with Lawrence about her reaction to seeing the finished film and how fans have treated her during the lead-up. “It was really good. It didn’t surprise me, which was good. During filming, I really liked everything what I was seeing. I liked everything that Gary was doing. Then I saw it, and it was all there,” Lawrence said. “It’s always hard for me watching because I think I am a horrible troll and I’ll never work again. Overall, I think everybody else in the movie is fantastic, and I think the film itself is really good.” Life has changed significantly for Lawrence since scoring the highly coveted role, not for the better in some cases. “I get photographers hiding in my bushes,” she said. “We’re way past autographs. We’re into being stalked and followed.” Other than the paparazzi, the response has been generally more positive for Lawrence. “Everyone’s been really nice fortunately. I mean, the movie’s not out yet, so we’ll see.” MTV News goes live from the “Hunger Games” red-carpet premiere tonight! Tune into our live stream from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. ET as Josh Horowitz catches up with the stars and asks fans’ burning questions! Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: Jennifer Lawrence
