Spencer Pratt Plans Heidi Montag Tell-All

‘I’m not holding anything back,’ the former ‘Hills’ star says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Spencer Pratt Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ Getty Images Spencer Pratt appears determined to ride out his breakup with Heidi Montag the same way the pair spent their short-lived marriage together: in the spotlight. The former “Hills” star told Us Weekly that he’s planning to divulge details about his relationship with his reality co-star and soon-to-be ex-wife in an upcoming tome. “My last book, ‘How to Be Famous,’ didn’t make the New York Times best-seller list because it was in the self-help section,” Pratt said. “This one is going to be totally different. I’m not holding anything back.” Pratt also revealed that the tell-all will highlight Montag’s strained relationship with her mother, Darlene , which was chronicled on “The Hills.” Montag has fired back about the forthcoming book. She recently told , “This is exactly why I left him.” Montag said she plans to halt the release of the book and told the website, “Right now, I’m looking into my legal options.” Pratt and Montag recently signed divorce papers , and their split is expected to become finalized in another six months. Earlier this year, Montag said the couple had grown apart , telling People magazine: “We just want different things in life.” However, Pratt put the deterioration of their relationship more bluntly, saying, “We love each other, but I’m a famewhore , and I’ll never grow out of it.” The planned tell-all isn’t the first time Pratt has milked his onscreen celebrity to work the publishing game. Pratt and Montag teamed up last year to write, “How to Be Famous,” an instructional guide to scoring fame with dubious credentials. How do you feel about Spencer Pratt writing a book about his relationship with Heidi Montag? Let us know in the comments below.

Embarrassed Obama White House Social Secretary Lands Position Running Media Firm

A second Obama administration veteran has landed in a media firm’s executive suite. Two months after ObamaCare’s chief propagandist, ex-ABC and CBS correspondent Linda Douglass , became Vice President of the Atlantic Media Company, Michael Calderone reported Tuesday afternoon on “ The Upshot ” Yahoo News blog: Former White House social secretary Desirée Rogers has been named chief executive of Johnson Publishing Company, billed as “the world’s largest African-American owned-and-operated publishing company.” JPC publishes both Ebony and Jet magazines. The news about Rogers came the very week MSNBC entered a partnership with the Chicago-based Ebony magazine to air joint reports on education policy, culminating in a two-hour special at noon EDT this Sunday: “ Making the Grade .” Calderon reminded readers that “Rogers, a former corporate executive and a Chicago friend of the Obama family, resigned in February from her position as the first African-American social secretary” after she “came under fire during her White House tenure after socialites-turned-reality-TV stars Tareq and Michaele Salahi famously crashed a state dinner.” Calderone also noted the two magazines are legitimate journalistic enterprises, at least since Obama was inaugurated: “Both Ebony and Jet have ramped up Washington coverage since Obama took office. Both publications joined the rotating White House press pool and petitioned for a seat in the briefing room.” My complete Obama-media revolving door list . Rogers makes the 17th member. Ebony’s press release , announcing the CEO position for Rogers, poured on the praise: Rogers is recognized as an innovative leader with a proven track record of developing creative solutions to transition organizations. She is known as an exceptional communicator and a committed community advocate. Rogers is expert in repositioning brands, utilizing their core essence to engage customers and extending them into the communities they serve. Tuesday’s NBC Nightly News carried a short item about Rogers read by fill-in anchor Ann Curry: The former White House social secretary who left Washington soon after that state dinner crasher scandal has a new job. Desiree Rogers has been named CEO of Chicago-based Johnson Publishing Company which puts out Ebony and Jet magazines and is the premier black publisher in the nation.

Katy Perry Denies Beach Boys ‘California Gurls’ Lawsuit

‘No one is suing anyone,’ Perry tweets. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” Photo: Matthew Cullen Everybody just needs to calm down, OK? That was the message being sent on Thursday from both sides of the alleged “California Gurls”/ “California Girls” flap. One day after the New York Post reported that the publishing company that handles the Beach Boys’ catalog was considering suing Perry over her song’s appropriation of the key phrase from the classic surf group’s 1965 hit, Perry weighed in on the alleged dust-up. “And just to be clear … no one is suing anyone,” she tweeted . “The press just loves to once again fabricate & exaggerate stories to get hits of sell papers.” In a statement sent to MTV News on Thursday, Beach Boys member Mike Love, one of the co-writers along with Brian Wilson of “California Girls,” said, “The Beach Boys are definitely not suing Katy Perry; in fact we are flattered that her fantastically successful song is bringing to mind to millions of people our 1965 recording of the Beach Boys’ ‘California Girls.’ We think her song is great and wish her all the success in the world.” According to Billboard magazine, a spokesperson for Rondor Music also confirmed that no legal action is imminent over Perry’s smash hit , which has sold 3 million copies and topped the singles chart for weeks. “There is no lawsuit against the writers or publishers of ‘California Gurls,’ ” an unnamed Rondor source said. “We have established diminutive claim. It is up to the six writers and various publishers of ‘California Gurls’ to decide whether they honor the claim or not. … Using the words or melody in a new song taken from an original work is not appropriate under any circumstances, particularly from one as well known and iconic as ‘California Girls.’ … Rondor Music, who publishes the works of Brian Wilson and Mike Love, is committed to protecting the rights of its artists and songwriters, and with the support of the writers, that is exactly what we are doing.” The original song features the famous refrain, “I wish they all could be California girls,” while Perry’s version has rapper Snoop Dogg saying, “I really wish you all could be California girls.” Both Love and Wilson have expressed admiration for Perry’s song , and their spokesperson stressed on Thursday that any legal action over it would be undertaken by Rondor, which owns the track, not by the group’s members. Publisher Provides Disclaimer With U.S. Constitution, Will Media Notice?

Copies of the U.S. Constitution put out by Wilder Publishing and being sold on Amazon.com come with an odd disclaimer on the first page of the pamphlet, in part declaring: “This book is a product of its time and does not reflect the same values as it would if it were written today.” On Wednesday’s America Live on FNC, host Megyn Kelly reported the controversy, will the rest of the media follow? In an example of political correctness run amok, the disclaimer goes on to warn parents of the literary material to follow: “Parents might wish to discuss with their children how views on race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity and interpersonal relations have changed since this book was written before allowing them to read this classic work.” The provocative pamphlet also includes the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. On FNC, correspondent Trace Gallagher quoted the publishing company’s response to the controversy: “We specialize in classic books and we were receiving complaints about the values depicted in some of the books. We wrote the disclaimer so that we could stop having to point out to our readers that people held different values 100 or 200 years ago. It seems we’re dammed if we do and dammed if we don’t.” Kelly concluded: “You know, it’s one thing when you republish ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover,’ its another when you slap that thing on the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.” Gallagher mocked: “Warning children.” Below is a transcript of the full June 9 FNC report. One wonders when the mainstream media will report on the issue. 2:52PM EST MEGYN KELLY: Well, a reprint of the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence stirring up a heated controversy. The publisher apparently feeling that it’s pamphlet, reprinting these documents, needs a warning label about values. Trace Gallagher reports live in our west coast newsroom. Trace. TRACE GALLAGHER: At the end of America Live, we just like to get people riled up, Megyn, we think this will probably do the trick. You know, we started researching this story this morning. We went on to Amazon.com and right next to the title, where it says the U.S. Constitution, somebody typed in ‘shame on you for adding this disclaimer.’ Amazon.com, by the way, has taken that down. But if you buy a copy of the U.S. Constitution on Amazon.com, what you will get is a disclaimer that says, and I’m quoting the following here, ‘This book is a product of its time, and does not reflect the same values as it would if it were written today. Parents might wish to discuss with their children how views on race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity and interpersonal relations have changed since this book was written before allowing them to read this classic work.’ So, of course, we called the publishing company, it’s Wilder Publishing. We called them, we emailed them, and we finally got a response and we have it right here. And the response is the following: ‘This is a generic warning that we put on all of our books. It was not our intention to tell people how to interpret the U.S. Constitution. We specialize in classic books and we were receiving complaints about the values depicted in some of the books. We wrote the disclaimer so that we could stop having to point out to our readers that people held different values 100 or 200 years ago.’ He ends by saying ‘It seems we’re dammed if we do and dammed if we don’t.’ KELLY: Oh, Warren. GALLAGHER: That’s the response from Wilder. Warren Lapine of Wilder Publishing. KELLY: You know, it’s one thing when you republish ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover,’ its another when you slap that thing on the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Well- GALLAGHER: Warning children.

Exclusive: The Book Proposal for Larry Flynt’s History of Presidential Sex [History]

A tipster sent us the proposal for One Nation Under Sex , Larry Flynt ‘s forthcoming history of White House coitus . And it’s not bad! Did you know that “George Washington was a famous swordsman in more ways than one”? You’ll be happy to know that One Nation will be “academically sourced,” so Flynt’s claims that Abraham Lincoln and James Buchanan were gay and that Louis Brandeis got his Supreme Court sear by blackmailing Woodrow Wilson over a mistress are totally true. You can read the whole thing below. Flynt doesn’t offer any bombshells—it’s more of a breezy overview of old rumors about what George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, John F. Kennedy, and others did and didn’t do with their penises. (Sadly, the word “Nixon” appears nowhere in the document.) And it promises a polemic on how once “Americans finally realize that we really do live in One Nation Under Sex , I’m confident we will be able to fulfill the promise of the Pledge of Allegiance.” Flynt compares the book to Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States , but we’re pretty sure Zinn never wrote sentence like this: “How did this president from Pennsylvania become so proslavery? In two words: Gay Love.” History comes alive!

Knopf Editor Makes Excellent Case for Needing Editors in Poorly Written Post About Needing Editors [Fuckups]

If you wrote a piece for the Huffington Post entitled Do You Really Need an Editor at a Publishing House? , you’d make a strong case, right? The answer, as evidenced by Knopf editor Carole Baron , is a resounding absolutely . Besides the fact that no good editor in their right mind would tell someone trying to make a coherent argument for their job to write a post so explicitly arguing for their job , they wouldn’t let them title it Do You Really Need an Editor at a Publishing House? nor would they let them publish it on the Huffington Post . Where content mostly goes to die. Unless someone else picks it up for being extraordinary in some way, which Baron’s post most certainly is . Clunky Prose: It starts in the lede. Do you really need an editor at a publishing house? I am really annoyed. All this talk about digital. Not to nitpick, but why not? Besides the fact that the text itself is pretty misshapen on the site —a good web editor would’ve taken care of that—the first sentence is also the title of the post (redundancy), the second sentence is a wooden declarative that could simply be spiced up by making a contraction out of “I” and “am,” and the third sentence is a jagged fragment that doesn’t explain what the “talk” is nor what kind of “digital” she’s referring to. Yet most of you are cognizant individuals, and you know she’s referring to digital media, and that the “talk” of which is some idle chatter we’re probably going to learn about. Assuming readers can make it past the first three sentences. Clunky Pronouns : The writer said: “Why not? There is no editing anymore.” Not only is that not true, but it certainly didn’t understand the complex role of the editor in a publishing house. First of all, what kind of braindead company is Baron keeping? Jesus. Also, I know editors often think of writers less as people and more like book-writing-creatures who cost money, but referring to one as “it” seems mildly unnecessary. That is, of course, unless Baron was talking about the writer’s statement, which can only “understand” something in the figurative or poetic sense. Which she already lost credit for in the first sentence, regardless of which, that intention just patently isn’t the case. Finally, who refers to their own job as complex ? Lady, you’re not a machinist. Misspellings and Title Form : Jonathon Gallassi’s: “There Is More to Publishing Than Meets the Screen” in the New York Times, January 2, 2010, expressed it logically and eloquently. “Jonathon Gallassi” has a name, and it isn’t spelled like that. It’s Jonathan Galassi . He’s not exactly a name you want to spell wrong, as he’s the the President and Publisher of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Also, New York Times should be italicized, and from a later sentence in the piece, “short changed ” is one word. WTF? : “And I am happy to say that as many as there are who complain, there are just as many who acknowledge the good work that editors can and do for a writer.” As many what, exactly? People? Penguins? If they’re penguins, they don’t acknowledge what an editor “can and do for a writer” so much as they acknowledge what an editor can do for a writer. Credit where credit’s due: we cribbed this item from a tipster…who wrote “makes the care for” instead of “makes the case for” in their original tip. And please , like we don’t have our fair share of typos on this site even with an editor. There’s probably one in this post! The difference between Baron and I, though, is that I’m not trying to make a case for an editor. My life is a case for editors. Ryan Tate put it best earlier this evening via email: Who will edit the editors? And who will edit the people who call for editing of the editors? Everything must eventually be published via wiki, is my point. A wiki that no one is qualified to edit. Then again, she could just be playing with our heads, as this might be part of an elaborate “meta” campaign for her job, in which case: golden. But that probably isn’t the case. She’s probably just an editor who needs a good editor. Or a good writer.
