The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that the young boy was beaten by the boyfriend of his mother in South Dakota, suffering severe head injuries. Earlier Friday, he was listed in critical condition. Blaine Larsen of the Sioux Falls Police Department said it became clear at the hospital that the boy’s injuries were not accidental.” “An examination led doctors to suspect that the boy’s injuries were ‘consistent with abuse and not accidental.'” “The assault on an infant charge involves blows, shaking or causing a child’s head to sustain impact with an object in a manner that causes bleeding or swelling on the brain.” The boy was confirmed dead Friday afternoon. And we thought the justice system was harsh in our country… 42 Criminals Executed In Iraq over 2-Day Period More than three dozen people found guilty of crimes were executed in Iraq recently over the course of a 2-day period. via NBC News Iraq executed 42 people, including a woman, for mass killings and other “terrorism” offenses over the past week, the justice ministry and the United Nations said following a surge in sectarian violence. The U.N. mission in Iraq said on Thursday it was concerned about the executions, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Amnesty International described the news as “extremely alarming.” Both urged Baghdad to immediately suspend the death penalty, which rights groups say has been used with increasing frequency by Iraqi authorities in recent years. Sixty-eight death sentences were carried out in 2011, according to Amnesty. The 42 hanged this week amounted to almost a third of the total number the campaign group said were put to death in all of 2012, when Iraq ranked third in a list of countries that carried out the most executions, behind China and Iran. “The criminals were found guilty of terrorist crimes… (that) led to the deaths of dozens of innocent citizens, as well as other crimes aimed at destabilizing the security and stability of the country and causing chaos and terror among the people,” Minister of Justice Hassan al-Shimary said in a statement. She impressed Monday night at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A., yet still managed to shock audience members with her outspoken nature. Fiona Apple Heckled Near the end of the show, she ignored a heckler shouting out song requests, acknowledging that we all have things we want to get off our chests at times. She proceeded to explain that years ago, her father, actor Brandon Maggart, got a bad review from film critic Rex Reed, who misspelled Maggart’s name. That was only the start of it. Apparently he also “f–ked with people and how they looked.” She continued, “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.” “Daddy, this is for you. Rex Reed: you’re a c–t.” Well, there you have that, ladies and gentlemen. Apple is famous for her erratic performances. Just last week, in Portland, Ore., a fan shouted, “Fiona! Get healthy! We want to see you in 10 years!” She reportedly screamed at the fan and “sobbed” through her next song. Apple also walked off stage at a Louis Vuitton event in August, yelling “predictable fashion!” In 2012, Fiona Apple was arrested in Texas for marijuana possession, which she then discussed on stage in one of the weirdest rants of all time. Guitar player Phil Chevron of the Pogues has passed away at the age of 56 after a long battle with cancer, the band said in a statement Tuesday. Chevron (real name was Philip Ryan) was a core member of the Anglo-Irish folk-punk group that made its international name in the 1980s and early 1990s. “He was unique. We’ll miss him terribly. Dublin town, and the world, just got smaller,” the Pogues said in a statement on their website earlier today. “His loved ones are in our thoughts.” Chevron, who was born in Dublin, started out with the Irish act The Radiators From Space, which has been described as Ireland’s first punk band. He moved to London where he joined the Pogues, fronted by fellow Irishman Shane MacGowan. He played banjo and mandolin and sang as well. Chevron stayed with the Pogues after MacGowan left in 1991 and was replaced by Joe Strummer, ex-frontman of The Clash. The band split up in 1996. He later reformed the Radiators with ex-Pogues bassist Cait O’Riordan. When the Pogues reformed in 2001 and interest in them revived, Chevron remastered the band’s back catalogue on CD and took a big role in their reunion tours. He was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in 2007 and was given a clean bill of health in April 2012 but the cancer returned. May he rest in peace.
Everyone knew Cory died of an overdose, but no one knew he went out like this. Cory Monteith Died Next To H-Ron, Drug Spoon And Needle He had so much talent. If only someone got to him sooner. According to The NY Post The British Columbia Coroners Service said Wednesday investigators found a spoon with drug residue and a used hypodermic needle in the hotel room where “Glee” actor Cory Monteith was found dead in July. The coroner’s final report issued Wednesday, confirmed initial findings that Monteith died from using intravenous h-ron combined with alcohol. The 31-year-old Canadian-born actor was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room July 13. “I classify this death as accidental,” coroner Claire Thompson said in her report. Monteith had checked into the hotel on July 6 and when he didn’t check out as expected on July 13, hotel staff entered his room and found him unresponsive on the floor. Two empty bottles of champagne were also found in the room. “Mr. Monteith was found in a collapsed position on the hotel room floor,” the report said. “It appeared that Mr. Monteith had been dead for several hours.” Hotel video footage showed him returning alone to his room at 2:16 a.m. on July 13. The investigation said Monteith had a history of illicit drug use with intermittent periods of rehabilitation and of abstinence from drugs. It said when people who have refrained from using opioids such as h-ron for a while, their tolerance for the drug decreases. Monteith was honored at the Emmy awards last month. His death recalled the lives of Heath Ledger, Corey Haim and River Phoenix – actors who battled substance abuse and died in their 20s and 30s. Monteith had talked bluntly about struggling with addiction since he was a teenager, calling it a serious problem and telling Parade magazine in 2011 he was “lucky to be alive.” R.I.P.
Police Fatally Shoot Homeowner After He Shoots Intruder A Texas man who shot and killed a burglar who attempted to rob his home is now dead after police fatally shot him when arriving to scene and “not realizing” that the gun-wielding man was defending his home. via Fox News A Texas homeowner was shot dead by police after he shot and killed a career criminal who broke into his home Thursday night, authorities say. The Dallas Morning News reports police did not realize 57-year-old William Keith Hall was defending his home when they arrived, and that Hall ignored the officers’ repeated demands he drop his weapon. Maj. Jeff Cotner tells the paper Hall pointed a pistol at police officers and witnesses on the scene, and that he had plenty of time to “de-escalate the situation.” “He was given plenty of notice, and he didn’t choose a path other than to confront officers,” Cotner said. Hall also allegedly pointed his gun at a contractor working on a house nearby who called 911 after hearing the shots. The caller, later identified as David Humphrey, told authorities Hall was yelling at witnesses to get away from the man who allegedly broke into his home, identified as 30-year-old Jerry Wayne Hale, after he shot him. Humphrey said Hall tried to fire at the witnesses but his gun was apparently jammed. The Dallas Morning News reports Hale had been arrested 14 times since 2000, and that his girlfriend told authorities he had gone to Hall’s home to burglarize it. High School Football Team Ends Season Early After Teammate Dies From Game Injury A group of high school football players made the difficult decision to end their season recently after a fellow teammate died following an injury he sustained during their last game via NBC News It was a question with no right answer that tugged heavy at the hearts of Damon Janes’ teammates when the 16-year-old died after a hit in a high school football game: Should the season go on? Should the players rally and play every game for their star running back, whose motto was “Giving up is simply not an option”? Or should the teenagers forget about football and take time to mourn their friend? The Westfield-Brocton Wolverines’ varsity players took a paper-ballot vote and decided that the pain was too great, that their season would end after just two games. “I wanted to play, I love the game,” said teammate Stevie Wisecarver III, a 16-year-old quarterback who has played football since third grade. “But it just wouldn’t feel right without him. The team just didn’t feel right.” “It’s just a tragic thing that happened,” 71-year-old Harold Montague said as he finished his coffee at the Green Arch, recalling a procession for Damon’s funeral that stretched for more than a mile and a half. Damon took what hospital officials would later describe as a “helmet-to-helmet” hit during the third quarter of Westfield-Brocton’s Sept. 13 game against Portville. He was able to get on his feet but lost consciousness on the sidelines. He died three days later at Women & Children’s Hospital in Buffalo. An exact cause of death has not been released. This is a sad story. It may be time for high school football programs to start amending some of their rules to mimic that of the NFL.
United Airlines Pilot Suffers Heart Attack During Flight Despite initially conflicting reports about the identity of the crew member, a United Airlines spokesperson has confirmed that it wasindeed the pilot of a Seattle-bound flight who suffered a fatal heart attack during the flight on Thursday evening, prompting an emergency landing in Idaho. via NBC News A pilot suffered an apparent heart attack in midair aboard a United Airlines flight to Seattle on Thursday evening, and later died after the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Boise, Idaho, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC News. A doctor and military personnel reportedly attempted to save the pilot’s life by administering CPR amid a dramatic scene, as another passenger rushed to help get the plane safely to the ground. United Airlines spokeswoman Christen David said that the flight’s captain was the individual involved in an email to NBC News. The pilot was alive when he arrived at the local hospital but died during the night while being treated, hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Krajnik told the Associated Press.
