LAPD Caught Removing Squad Car Recording Devices In Black Neighborhoods via Kulture Kritic Some LAPD officers have taken matters into their own hands by removing their antennas from police cars in predominantly black areas. Why? Because they don’t want to be monitored while being on duty. When news first broke about this move, members of the Police Commission were alarmed and wanted to know why this was happening. In addition to this, they wanted to know how long this has been going on and who authorized this move. In a review of what transpired, it was concluded that ‘half of the 80 cars in the Southeast division—which includes Watts and the Jordan Downs and Nickerson Gardens housing projects—were missing the antennas that help capture what officers say in the field. The review discovered at least 10 more cars in nearby divisions also had antennas removed.’ Steve Soboroff, President of the commission stated that this issue should have been brought to their attention and made available by those officers. The antennas are used for the safety of the officers and the public. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck responded that it was not the intent of the LAPD to hide this information from the commission. With so many officers, it was difficult to ascertain which officers were committing the infraction. A warning was issued to officers about removing their antennas. Here’s what you need to know: “Officers wear small transmitters on their belts that relay their voices back to the antennas in the patrol car. Sgt. Dan Gomez, a department expert on recording devices, told the Times that regardless of whether they are in front of the camera, officers’ voices can be recorded hundreds of yards away from the car—but that distance is severely curtailed by as much as a third without the antennas.” Shuttesrtock

When The Checks Stop Coming In: Paula Deen’s Restaurant Permanently Shuttered After 10 Years, Employees Informed Via Facebook!!!

The restaurant that was at the center of Paula Deen discrimination allegations has been closed for good. Uncle Bubba’s Seafood And Oyster House Co-Owned By Paula Deen And Brother Permanently Closed The messed up part about it is that employees of the restaurant learned of its closing the same way as the rest of the world — via a Facebook status message posted earlier Thursday. As you would probably expect, the employees were none too pleased about this. Read a few reactions below: News 3 Savannah published the following statement released via the restaurant’s marketing and public relations company: “Since its opening in 2004, Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House has been a destination for residents and tourists in Savannah, offering the region’s freshest seafood and oysters. However, the restaurant’s owner and operator, Bubba Hiers, has made the decision to close the restaurant in order to explore development options for the waterfront property on which the restaurant is located. At this point, no specific plans have been announced and a range of uses are under consideration in order realize the highest and best use for the property. The closing is effective today, Thursday, April 3, 2014. Employees will be provided with severance based on position and tenure with the restaurant. All effort will be made to find employees comparable employment with other Savannah restaurant organizations.” Well at least they’re going to try and find them new jobs right? SMH… SplashNews

Race Matters: White “Civil Rights Activist” Says Most People Don’t Want To Believe He’s Not A Person Of Color

Ummm have these people never heard of Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman ? How about Morris Dees? White Political Activist Says Majority Of People Want To Believe He’s Of Another Race People can be so ignorant sometimes… So we’re not surprised to hear that Michael Skolnik, a political activist, filmmaker and writer who is one of Melissa Harris-Perry’s regular guests believes most people would rather believe he’s not white because they can’t understand why he’d work so hard on behalf of the poor and people of color. Via The Griot : Skolnik, who has been dubbed a modern-day civil rights leader, has become a voice for young America. His 2012 open letter, titled “White People, You Will Never Look Suspicious Like Trayvon Martin” raised his profile even further, going viral on the Internet. He now serves on the Board of Directors for the Trayvon Martin Foundation, founded by the 17-year-old’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin. Skolnik undoubtedly inspires affection and respect among those who applaud his vision to bring to the forefront issues affecting the voiceless. But he completely understands that a good number of people don’t ‘get’ him. “I think that the majority of people want to believe I am not white,” he says, in response to being asked whether people ever speculate if he’s a light-skinned African-American. In fact, his low cut hair makes it nearly impossible to gauge its texture. “If I’m white then it’s confusing. If I’m mixed [race] it’s an easier story to tell. If I’m a light-skinned African-American then it’s a really easy story to tell.” “If I’m white, then wait a second, we’ve never heard a white person talk like that.” Although, Skolnik says the motivation behind his work is pretty simple: empathy or a desire for a more “inclusive” and “compassionate” society. Is anyone surprised to hear that this is even an issue? Wait, What? Georgia High School Ends Swirly Segregation To Hold Its First Racially Integrated Prom

Is this 2014 or 1950? High School Has First Racially Integrated Prom Swirl on… According to NY Daily News: There’s finally one prom for everyone at Wilcox County High School. Up until this year, students at the school of about 400 students in rural Rochelle, Ga. — population 1,415 — attended either a spring dance for white students, or a separate event for black students. The school did not hold an official prom, but left it up to parents, who organized the segregated events each year after the school first integrated in the 1970s. But in 2013, a group of students led by four best friends — two black girls and two white girls — kicked the shocking tradition to the curb by organizing their own integrated prom, held a week after the traditional whites-only event. This year, prom became an official school event, and race didn’t factor into the invites. Mareshia Rucker, one of the students who helped organize last year’s prom, said some in the community still don’t approve. “I’m absolutely sure that there are teachers that are still in the system right now that are at my school and they still don’t want an integrated prom,” Rucker told WGXA News. It’s a damn shame that some CHILDREN had to put an end to prom apartheid that these grown azz adults wanted to hold on to so bad. WMAZ

Black Hair Haters: Are Proposed Military Grooming Standards Discriminatory Toward Black Women With Natural Hair?

This is some bullish… Army Grooming Standards Ban Most Natural Hairstyles Black women enlist in the armed forces at a higher rate than any other demographic and represent a third of the U.S. armed forces but black women are not really feeling the love in return from the U.S. army, largely because of a new regulation 670-1 which hasn’t yet been made official or public, but was approved on March 6. The new rules aren’t sitting well with many enlisted black women, especially those with natural hair and there’s been a huge public outcry since slides from the Powerpoint presentation associated with the regulation leaked on March 20. Here are some details via AJA’s The Stream blog : Unauthorized hairstyles now include twists, dreadlocks, Afros and braids that are more than a quarter-inch thick – styles commonly worn by many African-American women. After the new measures take effect, soldiers who wear these hairstyles will have to remove them or cover them with wigs or extensions if they do not want to face administrative discipline. Army veteran “Tonya” [name has been changed to protect identity], who has dreadlocks, spoke to The Stream about her opposition to the new rules, which she called “deliberate.” “It’s very targeted because we all know who they’re talking about even though they never explicitly say the world ‘black’ or ‘African-American.’ We all know who typically wears these types of hairstyles and then they went as far as to include pictures of black women in the PowerPoint.” The updates to grooming regulations were approved on March 6 by Secretary of the Army John McHugh. The Stream reached out to the Army with questions regarding the new grooming guidelines, and was referred to previous statements made by Sergeant Major of the Army Raymond F. Chandler. “We’ve gone through a series of revisions and briefings to try to find something that’s reasonable, affordable and feasible within the Army that aligns itself with our professional responsibilities,” said Chandler’s statement. Some soldiers have pointed to what they say are inconsistencies in how grooming rules are applied. Earlier this year, the Department of Defense released regulations allowing turbans, headscarves and beards to be worn while in uniform to ensure protection of religious freedom for service members of diverse faiths. Definitely seems like the Army needs to reconsider this regulation and fortunately there is something we can all do about it… A Whitehouse.gov petition has been posted calling for the Obama administration to reconsider the guidelines: More than 30% of females serving in the military are of a race other than white. As of 2011, 36% of females in the U.S. stated that they are natural, or refrain from chemically processing their hair. Females with natural hair take strides to style their natural hair in a professional manner when necessary; however, changes to AR 670-1 offer little to no options for females with natural hair. In the proposed changes, unauthorized hairstyles include twists, both flat twists as well as two strand twists; as well as dreadlocks, which are defined as “any matted or locked coils or ropes of hair.” These new changes are racially biased and the lack of regard for ethnic hair is apparent. This policy needs to be reviewed prior to publishing to allow for neat and maintained natural hairstyles. The petition has already amassed nearly 5,000 signatures in just ten days. Do you agree that this regulation is discriminatory toward black women with natural hair? We can’t understand how dreadlocks would be banned but extensions would be approved — what sense does that make?

Family Feud: Pat Houston Files “Stay Away” Order Against Nick Gordon Following More Slander From He & Bobbi Kristina

This situation just keeps going from bad to worse… Pat Houston Gets “Stay Away” Order Against Nick Gordon The Houston family has been feuding ever since Whitney passed away and it now seems that things have gotten even worse. In the wake of Bobbi Kristina’s new husband who is also Whitney’s adopted son Nick Gordo n going a tirade against several family members, Whitney’s former manager and sister-in-law Pat Houston has now filed a “stay away” order against Nick. via TMZ Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law just got a restraining order against the man who was like a son to her. Nick Gordon — who grew up in Whitney’s house and married Whitney’s daughter — has been ordered to stay 200 yards away from Pat Houston — Whitney’s sister-in-law and executor of her estate. Pat got the order after claiming she feared for her safety after Nick made threatening comments and posted photos of guns. For his part, Gordon tells TMZ he was served with the order on Monday, but he “doesn’t give a f***.” Things are really spiraling out of control fast between Bobbi Kristina and her Houston family members…who will be the one to pull them back together? Black College Student Who Had Bike Lock Put Around His Neck By Racist White Roommates Files $5 Million Lawsuit

Black San Jose Student Files $5 Million Lawsuit Following Abuse By Racist Roommates An African-American San Jose University student who suffered abuse at the hands of his white roommates towards the end of last year is about to have the last laugh all the way to the bank. via Mercury News The victim in a racially charged bullying case at San Jose State has filed a claim seeking $5 million from the university, alleging that a dormitory adviser ignored a “clear” warning sign that “a potentially explosive and dangerous situation was developing in Room 704.” The young black man, identified for the first time as Donald Williams Jr., plans to follow up with a lawsuit if the university rejects his claim, his attorney, Carl E. Douglas, said Thursday. In addition to being hit Thursday with the claim, San Jose State also came under criticism from a task force on racial discrimination that President Mo Qayoumi created earlier this year to critique the way it handled the bullying incident. Williams, a 17-year-old freshman this past fall, says he was subjected to a litany of abuse by four of his white suite mates. Among the allegations outlined in court documents, police reports and emails between members of the campus housing staff: Williams was called “three-fifths,” referring to the way the government once counted blacks as just a fraction of a person, and when he protested, they dubbed him “fraction.” The roommates outfitted the four-bedroom dormitory suite with a Confederate flag. They locked Williams in his room.They wrote the “N-word” on a dry-erase board in the living room.  They wrestled Williams to the ground and fastened a bicycle lock around his neck and told him they lost the keys. The Mogi Mirim club in Brazil has been slapped with a hefty $21,000 fine after a few of its’ patrons hurled racial slurs at a professional athlete who was conducting an interview inside of the establishment. via Boston Herald A sports tribunal has fined Brazilian club Mogi Mirim $21,000 because its fans racially abused an opposing player in a Sao Paulo state championship match this month. The tribunal issued the fine after fans allegedly called Santos midfielder Arouca a “monkey” while he was being interviewed after a March 6 match. Fans also reportedly told the former Brazil midfielder to go and look for an African team to play for. Mogi Mirim, whose president is former Brazil star Rivaldo, said it will appeal because it did everything possible to help authorities solve the case. Nobody was arrested, but the team’s stadium will remain closed pending the appeal. The ruling late Monday came the same day South American football’s governing body fined Peruvian club Real Garcilaso $12,000 after its fans racially abused Brazilian Cruzeiro midfielder Tinga in a Copa Libertadores match earlier this year.
