Really??? “Culturally Ignorant” Kobe Bryant Speaks On Miami Heat Trayvon Martin Hoodie Pic–”Don’t Jump To Someone’s Defense Just Because They Are Black”

He should probably just shoot in the gym and STFU … Kobe Bryant Shares Thoughts On Miami Heat Trayvon Martin Hoodie Photo Via ColorLines In the March 31 edition of the New Yorker there’s a great profile of Kobe Bryant by Ben McGrath. In it, Bryant talks about aging out of his Hall of Fame career with the Los Angeles Lakers, and how he thinks his fame is “pretty fucking cool” for a kid who grew up in Italy and moved to suburban Philly as a teenager. Throughout his career, Bryant’s been talking about as an outsider, specifically when it comes to being the most famous in the world in a sport that’s overwhelmingly black. It’s given him a politically moderate stance on things, which was on display when McGrath brought up the subject of LeBron James posting a photo online of the Heat players dressed in hoodies in solidarity with Trayvon Martin. I won’t react to something just because I’m supposed to, because I’m an African-American,” he said. “That argument doesn’t make any sense to me. So we want to advance as a society and a culture, but, say, if something happens to an African-American we immediately come to his defense? Yet you want to talk about how far we’ve progressed as a society? Well, we’ve progressed as a society, then don’t jump to somebody’s defense just because they’re African-American. You sit and you listen to the facts just like you would in any other situation, right? So I won’t assert myself.” The profile goes on to quote former NFL running back Jim Brown, who at one point said, “[Kobe] is somewhat confused about culture, because he was brought up in another country.” Bryant then defended himself on Twitter, writing, “A ‘Global’ African American is an inferior shade to ‘American’ African American?? #hmmm. that doesn’t sound very #Mandela or #DrKing sir.” Setting aside a minute the fact that Bryant doesn’t seem know much about the Trayvon Martin case, what strikes me about this exchange is his insistence on questioning what it means to be black in America, particularly from the perspective of someone who grew up elsewhere. In this vein I think of Zade Smith and Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie’s recent discussion at the Schomburg, where Adichie talked at length about coming to the United States from Nigeria and learning how deeply embedded race is in American culture. What sets Bryant apart is his stingy insistence on clinging to a “post-racial” identity, this very old, conservative notion that black people should not be treated differently in this country — despite all of the evidence, like Martin’s death, that they are. People didn’t stand up for Trayvon Martin just because he was a black boy, they did it because his death so sharply illustrated the dangers of being a black boy in America. We’re not surprised at anything that comes out of Kobe’s mouth, but what do you think of his assertion that we should not defend black people just because they are black? Image via AP

Hate Crimes: Black Father Dies Protecting Teen Daughter From White Man Who Hurled Racial Slurs At Her – “What N****r?!”

He died defending his daughter from some  low life. So sad. Man Dies Defending Daughter’s Honor Against Racial Slurs We hope the racist scumbag who did this gets hard time. According to Chicago Tribune: Every weekday, Masharah Tingling says her dad would walk her to her school and be waiting for her when classes finished up. But on Wednesday afternoon, their ritual went terribly wrong when the two were confronted by a man with a lengthy criminal record on a Rogers Park street, according to Chicago police and Cook County prosecutors. When the man hurled a racial epithet at them, Michael Tingling pulled his 15-year-old daughter behind him, authorities said. The man then struck her father in the chest, he tried to defend himself but moments later he collapsed in a nearby business and was rushed to the hospital in full cardiac arrest, according to prosecutors. Michael Tingling, 59, was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston less than a hour. According to the mother, Firek “stared at them, looked at her up and down, and her dad grabbed her, put her behind him and he told him, ‘You need to walk away.’“The guy was just standing there grinning,” she said. In court, prosecutors said Tingling had pulled his daughter behind him after Firek had stopped in their path and asked, “What (N-word)?” Authorities said Tingling is black and Firek is white. Assistant State’s Attorney Rita Infelise said Firek punched Tingling in the upper chest. Tingling pushed him, and Firek punched him again in the chest, she said. A judge ordered Joseph Firek, 59, who is on parole for a residential burglary conviction, held on $250,000 bail Friday on charges of first-degree murder and a hate crime. It’s a shame people can’t even pick up their daughter from school without experiencing such hate.

Race Matters: Muslim Woman Sues Planet Fitness For Refusing To Let Her Workout In Head Covering

Muslim Woman Sues Planet Fitness For Refusing To Let Her Work Out In Headdress A Muslim woman is pursuing her lawsuit against Planet Fitness after she says the refused to allow her to workout in a religious head covering. via News One Tarainia McDaniel (pictured), recently filed a lawsuit against a Planet Fitness in New Mexico over an incident that occurred in October 2011, claiming that the gym wouldn’t allow her to wear her religious head covering when she tried to work out, reports Albuquerque Journal. According to the 37-year-old Albuquerque resident, she signed a two-year contract with the New Hampshire-based business at one location where she was never given a problem about wearing her Muslim head covering. When McDaniel transferred her membership to another Planet Fitness location, though, she was allegedly told that her religious head covering was not allowed because it was against the gym’s dress code, according to the lawsuit. However, the gym in question did display a sign that read, “No jeans, work boots, bandannas, skull caps, or revealing apparel.” McDaniel alleges in her complaint that she asked the gym’s representatives if she could wear her head covering to accommodate her faith and even asked if she could instead wear a hijab, a more formal piece that covers the head and chest.  McDaniel claims that her requests were flatly denied and told that the head coverings were direct violations of the strict gym dress codes. Planet Fitness’ attorney, Erika Anderson ,defends her client’s position regarding the case, telling Albuquerque Journal, “My client’s position is that they didn’t know the head covering was for religious purposes. It violated their dress code policy. But the New Mexico Human Rights Act and the Unfair Practices Act states that Planet Fitness had no legal right to deny McDaniel entry on to its facility while wearing her religious head covering. Do you think this woman’s lawsuit will hold up in court?

Race Matters: “Afraid Of Dark” Documentary Addresses Damaging Black Men Stereotypes [Video]

“Afraid Of Dark” Documentary Addresses Black Men Stereotypes According to Huffington Post: Tragedies like the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and Jordan Davis — and the public outcries that have followed each one — are proof that that there is a sharp awareness in the black community of the unjust targeting of black males, as well as the cultural stereotypes and myths that fuel it. This year, one film will explore the fears that underlie the criticism, marginalization and seemingly systematic incarceration of black men, as well as the violence so often directed toward them. The upcoming documentary “Afraid Of Dark” will examine racial stereotypes associated with black masculinity and the societal fears that ensue from them. The film will include interviews with rappers, actors and politicians describing their own experiences with prejudice and injustice. “Afraid of Dark” Filmmaker Mya B explains why now is the right time to put this out to the public… Via Indiewire Blog: Sometimes when you’re a filmmaker it takes so long to make a film, that you wonder if it still will be relevant, or if anyone will care about it, once it’s finally finished. Well, according to Brooklyn-based filmmaker Mya B, speaking on her new documentary feature film, Afraid of Dark, she, in fact, wondered just that about her film, or, as she says, when she started the project she had “no idea that it would be more relevant now than ever, and that it would take shape the way it did. I pray that it wakes up the masses not only in our community, but in others as well.” “I wanted to analyze the damaging stereotypes of black men which has led to them being murdered and criminalized. I also wanted black men to receive their glory outside of all the bad things you hear in the media and profile the amazing black men I know and who are in our communities. More importantly I wanted people to never forget those black youth and men who never got justice in death by honoring them in the film to keep them alive in our memories.” Watch the trailer below and discuss…

GOP Goobers: Paul ‘P90X’ Ryan Says Racist White Nationalists Are The Reason For “Lazy Men In Inner Cities Who Refuse To Work”

Paul Ryan: White Nationalists Are To Blame For Lazy Inner City Men How can you even take a guy who poses like this seriously , though???? According to Raw Story : Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) on Wednesday suggested that men in “inner cities” who refused to work were one of the main causes of poverty in the United States. In an interview with conservative radio host Bill Bennett that was first noticed by Igor Volsky at Think Progress, Ryan reflected on his controversial poverty discussion at last week’s Conservative Political Action Conference. “We call it a poverty trap,” he explained. “There are incentives not to work, and to stay where you are.” Ryan also pointed to the work of Charles Murray, a white nationalist, who has used “racist pseudoscience and misleading statistics to argue that social inequality is caused by the genetic inferiority,” according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. “That’s this tailspin or spiral that we’re looking at in our communities,” he told Bennett. “Your buddy Charles Murray or Bob Putnam over at Harvard, those guys have written books on this.” “Which is, we have got this tailspin of culture in our inner cities in particular of men not working, and just generations of men not even thinking about working and learning the value and culture of work,” Ryan opined. “So, there’s a real culture problem here that has to be dealt with.” Discuss… TIME

Ann ‘Wicked Witch Of The GOP’ Coulter Says Immigration Bill Is Evidence That “Republicans Hate Black People” [Video]

Ann Coulter: Immigration Bill Is Evidence GOP Hates Black People Ann Coulter bashing the GOP??? You don’t say!!! According to Biz Pac Review: Participating in a CPAC 2014 panel discussion Saturday, syndicated columnist and best selling author Ann Coulter slammed the GOP, saying the immigration bill championed by U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio was evidence that “Republicans hate black people.” In a tribute to William F. Buckley Jr.’s “Firing Line”, Coulter was debating liberal journalist Mickey Kaus, with Townhall’s Jonathan Garthwaite moderating. “I mean my whole life I’ve heard Republicans hate black people, I’ve never seen any evidence of it until I read Marco Rubio’s amnesty bill,” she charged. “We are the party that has always stood up for African-Americans. Who gets hurt the most by amnesty, by continuing these immigration policies it is low-wage workers, it is Hispanics, it is blacks.” Coulter equated immigration reform efforts to amnesty, suggesting President George W. Bush and U.S. Sen John McCain were hurt as much by the issue in the past as Rubio has been more recently. Peep the video below and let us know your thoughts. WENN

Justice: Siblings Awarded $37 Million In Lawsuit Against Racist Chicago Police Officers Following Brutal Beating & Wrongful Arrest While Pregnant

Siblings Awarded $37 Million In Brutality Lawsuit Against Chicago Police Officers A brother and sister from Chicago are finally getting some well-deserved justice to the tune of $37 million after enduring a wrongful arrest and brutal beating at the hands of Chicago police officers when they were teenagers nearly a decade ago. via Chicago Tribune A federal jury has awarded $3.7 million to two brothers and a sister who said they were beaten and falsely charged by rogue Chicago police officers who were assigned to a corrupt Special Operations Section kin 2004. The case stemmed from the arrest of Seneca Adams, 20, in front of his home on Sept. 14, 2004. His brother, Tari Adams, 18, and his twin sister, Sicara Adams, went to check on him and found that he was being held by members of the department’s Special Operations Section in a secluded area behind the Cook County Jail, according to their lawsuit. When the brother and sister attempted to ask the officers about their brother, Tari Adams was punched by an officer and she and her younger brother left the jail, the lawsuit stated. As they sat at a stop light blocks from their home, a squad car rammed into their car, they contended. They were able to make it home, but officers quickly arrested both of them, according to the lawsuit. Both Seneca Adams and Tari Adams said they were beaten in the officers and produced photographs taken later that night and the next day showing bruises and cuts on their faces. While beating Seneca Adams, officers repeatedly called him a “monkey” and a “n—–.” Senaca and Tari Adams accused the officers of filing false charges against them. Seneca Adams spent 204 days in Cook County Jail before raising enough money to be bonded out. Tari Adams was jailed for 46 days. “They are happy, relieved,’’ lead attorney Christopher R. Smith said of the brothers and sister. “This is a great moment for them but it’s not over by any stretch. Their lives were flipped on end.’’ Seneca and Tari now reside in Arizona. Their sister Sicara still lives in Chicago with her two children. She was four months pregnant with one of them when the officer hit her car, he said. She and the child did not suffer any physical injuries, Smith added. “These young people were amazing in how they dealt with this situation and how they were victorious. This is a mountain to climb,’’ Smith said. “They felt so dehumanized by the whole process.” Nice to know justice is served in SOME part of the country.

For Discussion: Rev. Jesse Jackson Says Wall Street Discrimination Is To Blame For High Black Unemployment

Do you agree? Jesse Jackson Blames Wall Street Discrimination For Black Unemployment Jesse Jackson is speaking out to identify patterns of of long-running economic discrimination that he says is keeping unemployment numbers high among African-Americans. He had this to say on the topic in a recent interview with WPIX New York : Well you have Wall Street and Harlem on the same island. And when you think about Yahoo and Ebay and companies like Amazon with no blacks on the board, that’s a great disparity. Beyond the issue of freedom, we’re free but not equal, the disparities keep growing.  It happens because of discrimination. You have patterns that target race discrimination. For example, for many people, their first business was their home. But when these banks foreclosed on homes after subprime lending, the banks got bailed out but the people got left out. We embraced the dream but we didn’t embrace the civil rights. You have to enforce equal opportunity [employment] and affirmative action. For example, what does it mean that 50 years later, there are zero black owners of Coca-Cola franchises? ONE owner of a Pepsi-Cola franchise? 20,000 automobile dealerships and only 200 are black? NFL and there’s not one black owner; [professional] baseball not one; only one in basketball. These patterns of economic segregation have basically been left off of the table. These are patterns of economic discrimination. Do you agree with Rev. Jesse Jackson’s theory on economic discrimination? Let’s discuss.
