For Discussion: Should Felons Be Allowed The Right To Vote After Being Released?

We think the U.S. justice system is pretty racist to begin with — and the laws against felons voting is just another way to rob black people from being heard — isn’t it? We’re not the only ones who feel this way. Attorney General Eric Holder is currently speaking up about how states need to repeal laws that keep felons from voting after being released from prison and he’s making quite a point if you ask us. Via WaPo reports : Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Tuesday called on states to repeal laws that prohibit felons from voting after their release from prison, urging changes that could allow millions more across the country to cast ballots. In a speech at Georgetown University Law Center, Holder said, “It is time to fundamentally reconsider laws that permanently disenfranchise people who are no longer under federal or state supervision.” Holder said that current laws forbidding felons from voting make it harder for them to reintegrate into society. He pointed to a recent study that showed that felons in Florida who were granted the right to vote again had a lower recidivism rate. “These restrictions are not only unnecessary and unjust, they are also counterproductive,” Holder said. “By perpetuating the stigma and isolation imposed on formerly incarcerated individuals, these laws increase the likelihood they will commit future crimes.” Holder does not have the authority to force states to change their laws, but his request could influence the debate to restore voting rights. His appeal is part of a broader effort underway by the Justice Department to overhaul the criminal justice system, which U.S. officials say often treats minority groups unfairly. The attorney general said that after the Civil War, laws that prohibit felons from voting were a way for post-Reconstruction states to keep blacks from casting ballots. Today, an estimated 5.8 million Americans are not allowed to vote because of current or previous felony convictions. Of those, nearly 38 percent are black. The Justice Department said that 23 states since 1997 have enacted voting rights overhauls. They include Nebraska, Nevada, Texas and Washington state. What do you think about this proposition? A “Lil Positivity” – Ray Allen Designs NBA Black History Month Shirt For Players #NBABHM

Ray Allen Designs NBA Black History Month Shirt Kudos to Ray Allen for this… Via Bleacher Report: While Ray Allen is proud of the mark he’s made with his play—making more three-pointers than anyone else—he’s trying to leave a legacy in other ways. This month, you may see the result of his sweat…In the shirts that NBA players are sweating in. Allen collaborated with the league on the design of the special shooting shirts for February, shirts that feature images of Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and Bill Russell. “I’ve been trying to make noise about it for the longest time, ever since I was in Milwaukee,” Allen told Bleacher Report recently. “Because when it came to Black History Month, I was always the guy to try to get the guys to do little video montages, during halftime, during timeouts, where we would read about one of the black heroes of ours, a great civil rights activist, or someone who was a pioneer back in the day that helped push along black culture and improve the civil liberties of black people.” And there was a problem, in his view. “It got to the point where I would read all of them, because nobody else would do it,” Allen said. “I always used to have a gripe with the way this game is, and how many young black men are playing this game, and how many have benefited from the civil rights movement. But we never talk about Black History Month, there is never anything done inside the (other) arenas. So I tried that, every place that I went, to at least have some type of moment. Let’s not have Black History Month and let the moment pass by.” Allen was insistent upon the importance of inclusion. He worked quickly with a friend to create the design, and they worked with the league to make sure it was appropriate for everyone. “The shirt doesn’t have to be a black shirt,” Allen said. “One of my messages was, Black History Month is not just about black people. Black History Month is about how black people have fought to improve the lives of not only black people, but the world over. “Martin Luther King fought for the civil liberties of all people. That’s something that we need to continue to believe, and understand that. People in the Middle East right now are fighting, and they are paying homage to Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement, they are following those doctrines, and how he fought for equality for all people. So that’s something that we need to talk about right in the forefront.” This is great! WENN/NBA

Race Matters? West Virginia Hill Billy Shoots Two Black Neighbors Dead After Mistakening Them For Burglars!

Something smells a little fishy. Man Kills Two Black Neighbors Without Warning Anybody wanna vote for gun control yet? No? Oh, ok… According to NY Daily News: A West Virginia man shot and killed his new neighbor and the man’s brother without warning as the two inspected their land. The shooter told police he thought his alleged victims were breaking into a building he mistakenly thought he owned, and police are baffled as to why he chose such a drastic measure to preserve something of no value to him. The Cabell County Sheriff’s Department charged Rodney Bruce Black, 62, of Barboursville, with two counts of first degree murder after he killed Garrick Hopkins, 60, of Milton and his brother, Carl Hopkins Jr., 61, of Oak Hill, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sheriff Tom McComas told the Daily News on Monday. Garrick Hopkins and his wife had just purchased land next door to Black and planned to start building a home in the next few weeks, McComas said. The landowner had invited his brother over to check out the property Saturday afternoon. Black saw the two men — who were both married with children — looking inside a shed. Then, allegedly without warning or calling the police, he grabbed a rifle and fired once at both men. They died at the scene. “He shot first and then called 911,” McComas said. “He said they were breaking into his house but it wasn’t his property.” “It’s just a terrible, terrible tragedy,” he said. “We’re still trying to figure all of this out. … Hopefully we’ll find out his reasoning as the investigation continues.” Can’t just allow every creepy azz cr-…red neck to have a gun and play cowboys and indians with real people. Clap Back: Gay Artist Responds To Racist “Fashion” Photo With NSFW Pic Of Black Man Sitting On Top Of White Man

Gay Artist Posts Photo Response To Racist Dasha Zhukova Photo via Huffington Post gay artist from Russia has created a flipped image in response to the controversial photo of Garage magazine’s white, female editor-in-chief sitting on a “black woman” chair. The Russian editor-in-chief of Garage magazine, Dasha Zhukova, came under fire for an editorial photo showing her seated atop a chair designed to look like a black woman with a belt around her waist and thighs and her legs up in the air. The photo, which offended many, began circulating on Monday, Jan. 20, which was Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Zhukova eventually apologized and called the decision to appear with such a racially insensitive piece of art “regrettable.” She also reasoned that designer Bjarne Melgaard’s actual intent was a “commentary on gender and racial politics.” But, some did not find the apology sufficient. Alexander Kargaltsev, a gay New York City-based photographer and gay activist, decided to stage his own response to the “outrageous and tasteless” portrait with an image of a naked black man seated on a naked white man, whose legs are folded up to create a “chair.”

Race Matters: “Black Twitter” Recognized As The Social Networking Site Hires Marketing Guru To Help Advertisers Market Products

They can’t deny the clout we carry around these e-streets Twitter Hires Marketing Vet To Help Advertisers Gain Access To Minorities Via Complex Maybe DJ Quik had it right in 1995 when he rapped: “If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense.” That could explain Twitter’s reluctance to acknowledge its most popular community, Black Twitter, until now. Yesterday it was announced that Twitter plans to capitalize on its racially diverse user base. According to a recent report by the Pew Research Center, black, Hispanic, and Asian-American users account for 41 percent of Twitter’s 54 million users. For some, this might seem like a revelation. For others, this is old news. Over the last seven years, as Twitter has become deeply embedded into our daily lives, Black Twitter, too, has grown into a cultural phenomenon of sorts. We first wrote about the social network’s subgroup in 2012, and have since covered the community time and again. From #PaulasBestDishes to #BlackBuzzFeed, Black Twitter has consistently provided an outlet to air grievances (the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman trial), analyze new shows (Scandal, Drake on SNL), and shoot the shit with friends. “Perhaps the most significant contribution of Black Twitter is that it increases visibility of black people online, and in doing so, dismantles the idea that white is standard and everything else is ‘other,’” wrote Soraya Nadia McDonald for the Washington Post. “It’s a radical demand for acceptance by simply existing—or sometimes dominating—in a space and being yourself, without apology or explanation.” That Twitter decided to hire marketing veteran Nuria Santamaria as its multicultural strategist to help better target black, Hispanic and Asian-American users may or may not be the solution to increasing engagement among non-white users. “Maybe Twitter doesn’t know how to talk about Black Twitter,” wondered Nitasha Tiku. They DEFINITELY don’t know how to talk about “Black Twitter” Regardless, Santamaria plans to target Twitter’s Hispanic population first. The Wall Street Journal reports: “Advertisers want to know more about racial and ethnic minorities on Twitter, from basic numbers to the languages in which they tweet … Twitter’s share of Hispanic users roughly parallels the U.S. online population, but it is a fast-growing, increasingly affluent ethnic group. Hispanics are also more easily identified because of their language. Twitter doesn’t ask users about race or ethnicity but categorizes them into ‘interests’ based on their tweets and whom they follow.” How do you feel about Twitter’s new business move? Will you be enraged if you start getting fried chicken, watermelon, and Jordan ads coming down your timeine?

Director Oliver Stone Quits Adultery-Laden MLK Jr Biopic “He Was NOT A Saint”

Born sinner ? Oliver Stone Out Of MLK Biopic Citing Creative Differences Via MetroUK Director Oliver Stone has quit a Martin Luther King biopic following a disagreement with King’s estate over how he should be portrayed. Stone, who was set to write and direct the project, revealed on Twitter that the film’s producers weren’t happy with his script, which touched on ‘adultery, conflicts within the movement, and King’s spiritual transformation into a higher, more radical being’. He added that he was worried that the film would be ‘suffocated’ as a result of his departure and the completed movie would gloss over King’s flaws. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther “The King” Jr. is an iconic figure not just for black folks, but for America as a whole. That said, it has been documented that he did succumb to certain…transgressions in his abbreviated life. Do you feel that Oliver Stone has a right/obligation to present those side of King’s life as well? Flip the page to read the rest of Olvier’s 140-character soliloquy.

Cussing & Swearing Black “Toddler Thug” Taken Into Protective Custody After Video Goes Viral And Causes Racist Ishtstorm

Omaha Cursing “Toddler Thug” Taken Into Protective Custody The “Thug Cycle” has been halted for this little cussin up a storm toddler … According to Raw Story: A diapered toddler seen repeating profanities in an online video has been taken into protective custody by authorities in Nebraska, police said. The video was posted by the Omaha Police Officers Association under a title, “The Thug Cycle,” that some found offensive. “We here at OmahaPOA.com viewed the video and we knew that despite the fact that it is sickening, heartbreaking footage, we have an obligation to share it to continue to educate the law abiding public about the terrible cycle of violence and thuggery that some young innocent children find themselves helplessly trapped in,” the police union said in its post, adding that the video came from “a local thug’s public Facebook page.” Investigators said they found nothing criminal in the video, which shows the child making obscene gestures to adults who hurl racist and obscene comments at the boy and prompt him to repeat crude phrases. “Now while we didn’t see anything in this video that is blatantly ‘illegal,’ we sure did see a lot that is flat out immoral and completely unhealthy for this little child from a healthy upbringing standpoint,” the police union said in its post with the video. The union’s president, Sgt. Jeff Wells, also said one of the adults mentions a local street gang in the video. The child was taken into custody Wednesday along with three other children by Omaha police’s Child Victim Unit and the Nebraska Child Protective Services. Police did not release the names of any of the children or families or disclose their relationship to one another. “That is why when we talk about the culture, the criminal culture, that this is to try to break the cycle and deal with the culture of violence and the culture of gang activity,” Wells said. But local civil rights activists said the police union’s post “crossed a line” in a city where officers’ treatment of minorities, who make up about a quarter of Omaha’s population, has led to lawsuits and criminal charges against a pair of cops and firings and reassignments of others in the past year. “For them to take a video out of context — a 2-year-old who doesn’t have the brain capacity to know what’s going on — and to say that this child, because two adults acted inappropriately, is going to end up in a life of crime is totally inappropriate,” said Willie Hamilton, president of Black Men United.
