A new study has revealed some really depressing news. Not only are high school seniors performing at the same level as 13 year old white kids, they’re performing at the same level as they did 30 years ago. “We take kids that start [high school] a little behind and by the time they finish high school, they’re way behind,” says Amy Wilkins, vice president for government affairs and communications at the Education Trust, a Washington-based educational advocacy group. “That’s the opposite of what American values say education is about. Education is supposed to level the playing field. And it does the opposite. . . .While many people are celebrating our postracial society . . . there is still a significant hangover in our schools.” The Education Trust says African-American and Latino students have made little to no progress in 12th-grade reading scores since 1994, continuing to lag behind white students. Math achievement has also remained flat, with the gap between white students and those of color widening. Educators cite these causes for the disparity in performance: Lowered expectations for students of color Growing income inequality and lack of resources in low-income school districts Unequal access to experienced teachers An increased number of “out of field” teachers instructing minority students in subjects outside their area of expertise Unconscious bias” by teachers and administrators. This is truly alarming news. We’d say that Obama needs to do something but we’re not sure what he can do. It’s time to make some demands on a local city and community level. Let’s figure it out. Man, Spike Lee sure has a potty mouth: Spike Lee had a message for the Sundance festival crowd at tonight’s world premiere of his new film, “Red Hook Summer”: “Please tell them that this is not a motherf**king sequel to ‘Do the Right Thing’!” That’s what people had been saying, mostly to fill the vacuum of information surrounding the movie. All anyone seemed to know was that it was set in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, that it followed a 13-year-old boy (newcomer Jules Brown) and his preacher grandfather (played by ‘The Wire’ veteran Clarke Peters), and that it featured the return of Mookie, Lee’s pizza-delivering character from his trailblazing 1989 movie about tensions boiling over in the summer heat. Lee, who took the stage for the post-screening Q&A draped in New York Giants regalia and immediately declared that the audience had “doubled the black population of Utah — maybe tripled it,” prefers to think of “Red Hook Summer” as “another installment in my great chronicles of Brooklyn,” a series that includes “She’s Gotta Have It,” Do the Right Thing,” “Clockers” and “Crooklyn.” “We never went to the studios with this film, I told you!” he shouted. “We said, ‘Were gonna do this motherf**king film ourselves and show it at Sundance…. This whole thing was planned out.” Of the studios, he added, “They know nothing about black people. And they gonna give me notes about what a young black boy and girl gonna do in Red Hook? F**k no! This idiot finally realized that he’d made a terrible mistake . Jeffrey Darnell Paul is the name of the guy that designed the flyer. He owns South Side Graphix and makes horrible life choices. “What was I thinking? Promotion,” Paul told NBC Miami. “It was proposed to me like a birthday bash for Martin Luther King, I put a flyer together without thinking about the effects it would have.” Paul said he received phone calls from people all over the country concerning the flyer and said he didn’t intend to be controversial. “I wasn’t trying to disrespect anybody,” he said. “It was just supposed to be a promotional thing, it wasn’t about disgracing Martin Luther King, it wasn’t about that.” Well, what the frik was he trying to accomplish?! It did promote some things, like how the human race can be full of complete idiots. “This is the owner’s first time seeing it,” manager Jermaine Robinson told the news network. “So we don’t condone this. This is Martin Luther King. We respect what he did. Today is the day for us to honor him.” Despite the criticism, he told the news outlet that he takes full blame for the mistake. “I apologize about it, I’m taking full responsibility,” he said. “I wish it could have gone down a different way but I’m learning from it and trust me, I’m not going down that route again.” So the actual club owner didn’t know anything about the flyer. Well that gives him sort of a pass. We’ll forgive him for now. The MLK event was actually cancelled after the flyer backlash. This Tim Tebow thing has gotten WAY out of hand!! Saturday night, Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos we’re humiliated at home by Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 45-10. A majority of this years NFL season was spent debating the merits of the first-year starting quarterback, and whether or not he can actually PLAY the position that he was drafted for. The humble, well-mannered, overtly-Christian, WHITE, quarterback quickly became a lightning rod for polarizing debates in offices, on trains, at dinner tables, and especially on TV. Stephen A. Smith is one of the sports pundits who is at the center of the Tebow controversy alongside his morning show partner Skip Bayless on ESPN’s First Take. People tend to feel very strongly one way or another when it comes to discussing Tebow and in most cases both religion and RACE are a factor in those feelings. As a “non-believer” in Tebowmania, Stephen A. Smith has found himself on the receiving end of the ire of Tebow fanatics.
