Race Matters: Is New Orleans’ New Curfew In The French Quarter Really Meant To Keep Black Folks Away From The Tourists??

This is a tough one to gauge… From a distance, it seemed like common sense: an ordinance meant to keep children away from an open-air night-life zone with more than 350 places to buy booze, an abundance of strip joints and a 300-year-old reputation for iniquity. But last week, as the New Orleans City Council approved a strict curfew for youths 16 and younger in the French Quarter, it sparked an incendiary debate that laid bare some of the tensions over race and police priorities that the Louisiana city — which suffers from the nation’s highest per capita murder rate — is struggling to resolve as it navigates its post-Hurricane Katrina future. The ordinance, which was unanimously approved Thursday, revises a long-standing 11 p.m. curfew on Friday and Saturday nights to 8 p.m. for the French Quarter and part of the nearby Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. In the rest of the city, an 11 p.m. curfew remains on weekends, with an 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. curfew on weekdays, depending on the season. Councilwoman Kristen Gisleson Palmer, whose district includes the French Quarter, wrote the ordinance. The goal, she said, was to protect children from violent incidents like the headline-grabbing shootings last Halloween night, in which two people were killed and a dozen injured by gunfire on or around the packed Bourbon Street party strip. “If we can, in any way, protect children from that, I think it’s very reasonable,” Palmer said. But in a pair of emotional public meetings, a number of residents, most of them African Americans, criticized the idea. Some alleged that the lawmakers were trying to keep low-income blacks out of the sightlines of tourists. “There is this desire not to have these black males in the French Quarter,” said Tracie L. Washington, an attorney who heads the Louisiana Justice Institute, a nonprofit civil rights group. Palmer, who is white, dismissed the allegations. At the council meeting Thursday, critics said the curfew would result in racial profiling of young blacks. One man called it “the equivalent of a black code.” Another African American speaker said that instead of “sugar-coating” the issue, the council should “just tell us straight up — you don’t want us.” Some worried that police would harass black kids going to and from restaurant jobs, or when they were busking or tap-dancing for tips from tourists. Palmer, the councilwoman, said those kids would be left alone because the ordinance exempts, among others, people at work or headed to and from work. Many critics argued that the new curfew hours would seem more fair if they were enforced citywide. Palmer said her staff was working on a new ordinance to do just that. Ronal Serpas, the city’s police superintendent, said he had asked his officers to be more diligent about enforcing the existing citywide curfew since he took charge of the police department in May 2010. Some French Quarter residents have applauded the new curfew, but other New Orleanians wonder whether police, in enforcing the rules, will be distracted from more crucial duties. In many cases, youths breaking the curfew will be told to go home, but in some instances police might take them into custody. Do you think the curfew is racially motivated ? Source More On Bossip! Another Day, Another Racist Politician: Republican Calls Mrs. Obama “Mrs. YoMama”

This is getting old, Republicans. Kansas House Speaker Mike O’Neal (R-Hutchinson) apologized Thursday for forwarding an email referring to First Lady Michelle Obama as “Mrs. YoMama” and comparing her to the Grinch. The subject line of the email reads “Twins separated at birth?” It includes side-by-side pictures of Michelle Obama and the Grinch with similarly windswept hair. According to the Lawrence Journal-World, the forwarded part of the email reads, “I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Mrs. YoMama a wonderful, long Hawaii Christmas vacation — at our expense, of course.” O’Neal forwarded the email to House Republicans and added the text, “Sorry, just had to forward the latest holiday message! I’ve had worse hair days but this is pretty funny.” He said Thursday he was sorry to those he offended, adding that he missed the text in the body of the email. He said, however, that the picture “made me laugh.” Earlier his communications director defended him, saying that political cartoons are a “part of American culture.” And the picture in question? Sigh. These clowns. We’ll have to deal with this for another four years after Barack Obama wins the reelection in 2012. It’ll probably only get worse. Source More On Bossip! True Or False??? Race Matters: Federal Judge Decides To Keep Party Affiliation On Voting Ballots So Black People Will Be Able To Find The Democrats

Well this is quite interesting: A U.S. District Court judge has rejected a challenge to Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 — filled when the Department of Justice barred the city of Kinston, N.C. from holding nonpartisan elections — reasoning that lack of access to party affiliation would discriminate against minority voters who otherwise wouldn’t know how to find Democratic candidates on a ballot. The challenge was initiated after the Justice Department rejected a 2008 referendum vote in which the city of Kinston voted to stop listing candidates’ party affiliations on ballots. Under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, the Justice Department must approve changes to election law in regions with a history, however distant, of racial discrimination. The Justice Department prevented the 2008 referendum change, arguing in part that “the elimination of party affiliation on the ballot will likely reduce the ability of blacks to elect candidates of choice.” In other words, they are saying that if the parties are eliminated black people won’t know who to vote for…SMH. Prepare To Freak Out: NASA Has Found A Planet That Probably Has Life On It

Aliens! We’ve found aliens! A new planet detected orbiting a star 600 light years away could have continents, oceans and life, it was revealed today. The planet, Kepler-22b, is about twice the size of Earth and may have a surface temperature of around 22C – similar to a warm spring day in the UK. It is the first so-called “super-Earth” known to lie within the “habitable” zone of a Sun-like star. Dubbed the “Goldilocks zone”, this is the orbital band where temperatures are just right to allow the existence of surface liquid water. This means the planet could have continents and oceans just like the Earth. And where there is liquid water, there could also be life. Scientists believe Kepler-22b may not only be habitable, but possibly even inhabited. “This discovery supports the growing belief that we live in a universe crowded with life,” said Dr Alan Boss, from the Carnegie Institution in Washington DC, who helped identify the planet from data obtained by the Kepler space telescope. So there may already be another planet with life on it?! Time to get your tin hats and ray guns ready? Probably not, since they’re hundreds of light years away. It’ll probably be a loooong time before we get any more contact with the planet. But in the meantime, this is pretty freaky info. Source More On Bossip! Separated At Birth? Hi Haters: Nasty Cops Take To Facebook To Call West Indian Paradegoers “Savages” And “Animals”

SMH… These cops are buggin’ with all the West Indian Day Parade yang they were talkin on Facebook! Posters on Facebook who identified themselves as cops called participants in the Brooklyn West Indian Day parade “animals” and “savages” in a series of offensive entries that triggered an NYPD probe Monday. “Let them kill each other,” wrote one Facebook member who posted comments under a cop’s name, according to The New York Times. “I say have the parade one more year and when they all gather drop a bomb and wipe them all out,” wrote another, who said he was a police officer. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Monday he would refer the matter to the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau. The Facebook comments were posted for several days in September but have since been taken down. Those who posted comments said they were angered at being assigned to the parade. They apparently used real names, in keeping with Facebook policy, and some identified themselves as officers. One of the writers identified himself as Nick Virgilio, a police officer. Contacted by the Daily News, Virgilio denied making derogatory comments and suggested that his Facebook account had been used without his knowledge. “I tried to reach out to Facebook because I’ve had problems with people going on there who wrote things that I had nothing to do with,” he said. “This happened a couple of times, most recently several months ago.” Virgilio declined to reveal where in the department he works or whether he was assigned to the parade. Lawyers Benjamin Moore and Paul Lieberman used the Facebook diatribes in their defense of Tyrone Johnson, who was acquitted of gun possession charges last month. The lawyers found that the Facebook profile of the arresting officer, Sgt. Dustin Edwards, showed he belonged to a group formed for “N.Y.P.D. officers who are threatened by superiors and forced to be victims themselves.” Edwards could not be reached for comment. The NYPD bars officers from making “discourteous or disrespectful remarks” about race or ethnicity. The parade, an annual Labor Day weekend event, has been marred by episodes of violence. “It’s a scheduled riot,” one poster said, according to The Times. What the hell??? They’re talking about letting people kill each other and dropping bombs on the parade? Who knew the NYPD was the new KKK? Internal Affairs better figure this isht out… and with a quickness! Hate Me Now: The Roots Drummer ?uestLove Says He Has Received Angry Racist Tweets By Those Tea Party Nuts Defending Michele Bachmann’s Honor

We don’t see what the big deal is, she’s a liar isn’t she??? Questlove isn’t laughing anymore. The bandleader who chose to play Fishbone’s “Lyin’ Ass B—-” as Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachman took the stage on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” last week says the joke wasn’t worth all the backlash. The musician says he’s received a slew of hate messages and racial epithets from Bachmann supporters and Tea Party members since leading house band The Roots to play the snarky song that introduced the Minnesota Congresswoman onto the show. “I’ve seen some really colorful epithets in the past four days,” he told Pitchfork. “Blocking 3,500 tea party extremists in a three day period is no fun, especially when you’re a drummer dangerously close to carpal tunnel,” he went on. “In the end, was it worth it? Absolutely not.” Questlove said he never thought the song would cause so much reaction. “It wasn’t like a chess move where you have to think 12 steps ahead,” he said. “You’re just, like, ‘F—, all right, I’m gonna do it,’ in a kamikaze-type way. And I really didn’t think about how it could be perceived as a misogynist swipe – it didn’t hit me until my [Twitter] timeline started showing up that it was seen that way.” The afro’ed drummer went on to say: “It deeply offended a lot of women’s groups and non-Bachmann supporters, and for that I’m deeply sorry,” he told Pitchfork. “I’m not parading like I’m the poster boy for the feminist movement, but those who truly know me know that that’s not me. I was really just going with her whole revisionist history angle, I wasn’t calling her out on being a woman.” Man, eff that lyin’ a$$ beyotch!!! “Gwynnie From The Block” Gwyneth Paltrow Talks Race, Ethnic Hair, Bestie Beyonce, And Rihanna On “The Tanning Effect” With Steve Stoute [VIDEO]

Gwyneth sat with Steve Stoute to discuss her experience with urban culture and how it influenced her and her family. Long before captivating moviegoers across the globe with her award-winning acting skills, Gwyneth Paltrow was front and center of a pivotal cultural shift. While growing up in Santa Monica, California, her father, Bruce Paltrow, created and wrote for the late ’70s CBS drama “The White Shadow,” which examined racial stereotypes in America and exposed the actress to many seminal television “Tanning” moments. As she explains in HuffPost Black Voices latest episode of “The Tanning Effect,” Paltrow witnessed her father’s impact at the time on American society. “I think the most ‘Tanning’ that I saw during that phase of my life was my dad, [who] created, wrote and directed a TV show called ‘The White Shadow,’ about a white basketball coach teaching basketball in an inner-city school,” she explained. “And that show that he did — I mean, obviously we were there a lot, but it was interesting to see that culturally start to permeate. And he did a lot of ‘firsts’ on that show. He had the first interracial kiss ever. It was a good show.” (Editor’s Note: As a point of fact, the first televised interracial kiss was between William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols on “Star Trek” in 1968.) So Gwyneth is really down with the culture huh? Chris Martin better keep her close by before one of these young brothas start spittin’ game at her!
