Race Matters: Soledad O’Brien To Host New CNN Special On Black Techies “The New Promised Land: Silicon Valley”

CNN’s Soledad O’Brien investigates how African-American entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley struggle with racial bias, financial security, . While much of the country struggles to emerge from a recession, California’s Silicon Valley is booming, and technology companies like Facebook, Skype, and Apple are seeing their valuations soar. CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien reports that the ownership of this digital bloom is mostly young, white, and male. For her fourth Black in America documentary, O’Brien asks why, according to industry analyst CB Insights, less than one percent of all venture capital money went to digital startups with African-American founders in 2010 – and she profiles a unique, technology-focused “accelerator” developed to help African-American digital entrepreneurs secure funding to establish their businesses. Black in America: The New Promised Land – Silicon Valley will debut on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 8:00p.m. ET & PT and replay on Nov. 13 at 11:00p.m. ET & PT. It will also replay on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 8:00p.m. and 11:00p.m. ET & PT on CNN/U.S. The NewMe accelerator program, founded by friends Angela Benton and Wayne Sutton, is a collaborative of African-American start-up founders with Internet-based businesses – the first such business accelerator of its kind. NewMe’s ultimate mission is to diversify the technology industry by accelerating the participants’ business ventures. Participants seek venture capital investment and are mentored by prominent people from within the industry. O’Brien follows the progress of the eight former strangers after they were selected to live together for nine weeks in a modest, three-bedroom house in Mountain View, CA, from June to August of 2011. The entrepreneurs were provided with free office space and attended regular networking events hosted by NewMe’s sponsors. The participants come from varied backgrounds and experiences. Shots Fired: Herman ‘Big Daddy’ Cain Sends An Email Calling His Accuser An Attention Sloring Hoe Bag

Looks like Herman Cain isn’t going to take these accusations lying down. He’ll meet them head on. He just has to get a good feel of the situation. After a fifth accuser has pointed out Cain for his free hands, he decided to address the issue with this email that went out to supporters: “The fact is that Ms. Bialek has had a long and troubled history, from the courts to personal finances – which may help explain why she has come forward 14 years after an alleged incident with Mr. Cain, powered by celebrity attorney and long term Democrat donor Gloria Allred,” the email says. On Monday, Bialek told reporters that, in 1997, Cain put his hand under her skirt and pushed her head toward his crotch. Cain’s campaign calls the allegations “patently false.” In an effort to discredit Bialek, the email lists six specific civil lawsuits in which Bialek was a defendant, in addition to citing a report saying that Bialek was sued over a paternity matter in 1999. The email also argues that Bialek has filed for bankruptcy twice and worked for nine employers over the last 17 years. “The questions should be – who is financing her legal team, have any media agreed to pay for her story, and has she been offered employment for taking these actions?” We see Cain finally trying to get a handle of the situation. Still, it may be too little, too late. After five women have come out, there may be no turning back for the former Republican frontrunner. More On Bossip! KKK: Authorities Discover Underground White Supremacist Network In San Francisco

“ Racism still exists, they just be concealing it”… in one of the most tolerant cities in the country? Authorities say the number of white supremacist groups in San Francisco is a serious and expanding. Last November, two Mexican nationals were attacked outside a bar in the tTenderloin by a group of white supremacists yelling as they beat one of the men unconscious. Three men were arrested. One of the men, Anthony Weston, testified against the other two. “In exchange for giving us the information about skin heads moving here to San Francisco he was offered a plea bargain,” San Francisco Assistant District Attorney Victor Hwang said. Weston served 10 months in prison. The other two have not been sentenced. But Weston gave investigators information about white supremacist groups in San Francisco. Investigators also found Nazi and white supremacists paraphernalia inside one of the attacker’s apartment. According to San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon, there are three groups operating in the city. “We have probably in excess of 40 to 50 individuals that are documented white supremacists and nearly another 150 or so that are associates that are operating within the city,” Gascon said. The district attorney’s office says they are involved in drug trafficking, identity theft and other crimes. Most of them belonged to a white supremacist group in prison and have moved to San Francisco. Wow, San Fran… Can’t say we’re totally surprised though.

Myth-Busting History Lesson: Everyone Already Knew The Earth Was Round When Columbus Set Sail

Let’s get the facts straight on this fake holiday. First of all, we all know the original travesty: Columbus and his people came to America and killed all of the Native Americans and took their land. But there’s another travesty in the Columbus history. The idea that Christopher Columbus sailed across the world to prove that it was round was a big myth started by Washington Irving in his 1828 biography of the “discoverer”. Irving wrote a semi-fictional biography of Columbus and included that lie, which our teachers only perpetuate every day. In fact, as far back as Aristotle, people knew the world was round. So when your kid comes home from school talking about Columbus proving that the Earth was round, give him or her a history lesson and reveal the truth! All Columbus did was come to America and help lead the charge of Europeans killing and taking the land that wasn’t theirs. The End.

How cute are these little guys?!?!?1 Kaydon and Layton Wood are just five yet already they are local celebrities. Dressed in identical outfits (their parents have always taken great pride in doing so), the boys are often stopped in the street by passers-by who can’t believe it when they are told the pair are not only brothers, but twins. In fact, the twins have been making headlines in regional newspapers since they were born – because one is white and the other black. The phenomenon is examined in a major documentary, screened tomorrow night as part of BBC2’s Mixed Race season. The film follows the story of five families with twins like Kaydon and Layton, and explores the medical explanation for this striking occurrence.

KKK: Has Melissa Joan Hart AKA “Sabrina The Teen Witch” Been Running A Racist Operation???

Explain this one Clarissa! A former employee of the candy and yogurt store Sweetharts, owned by Melissa Joan Hart, has filed a racial discrimination and wrongful termination lawsuit against her and the business. In the lawsuit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles and obtained by E! News, Shana Kharineh accuses the Melissa & Joey star and Sweet Harts of wrongful termination, discrimination based on race, retaliation against employee complaining of discrimination, failure to pay wages owed, failure to pay overtime wages, failure to provide meal periods, failure to provide rest periods, failure to pay minimum wage and unlawful business practices. Hart’s camp reached out to E! News, saying, “Melissa Joan Hart is the owner of Sweetharts Sweets in Sherman Oaks, California. While the shop was her vision, Melissa does not currently function in a day-to-day operational capacity, and has never met Shana Kharineh. Sweet Harts Sweets is an equal opportunity employer, as is Melissa Joan Hart. Neither Sweetharts Sweets nor Melissa engages in or condones any form of discrimination whatsoever. There is no basis whatsoever to these vicious allegations.” Kharineh was hired as a manager at the Sherman Oaks store in May 2011 with a starting salary of $450 a week, according to her complaint. The plaintiff alleges that unlike the store’s white employees, Kharineh, who is African American, was given a special dress code based on her race and told not to wear black because “‘black on black’ did not look appropriate.” Kharineh also says that because the store was understaffed June 2011, she was forced to work in excess of 60 hours per week with no overtime pay and no breaks. The next month, she claims, her employers “berated and humiliated” her, criticizing her performance and relationship with her fellow employees and complaining that “when she bent over her underwear would show.” She was fired in August and believes it’s because of her race and her complaints about her working conditons. We can’t think of too many employers who wouldn’t want their managers working like crazy, but the law is the law… The “black on black” comment does sound crazy though. If Melissa isn’t involved in the day-to-day operations, perhaps she should be so her name doesn’t come up in any more lawsuits! Source

Read A Book: Study Shows That Students’ Knowledge of Civil Rights History Has Deteriorated

Ya’ll should be ashamed. Time to do some educatin’. A report by the Southern Poverty Law Center has declared that states are much less educated about civil rights than they were a generation ago. “The report assigns letter grades to each state based on how extensively its academic standards address the civil rights movement. Thirty-five states got an F because their standards require little or no mention of the movement, it says. Eight of the 12 states earning A, B or C grades for their treatment of civil rights history are Southern states where there were major protests, boycotts or violence during the movement’s peak years in the 1950s and ’60s.” New York, Florida and Alabama all scored A’s for the way they talk about MLK, James Meredith and Malcolm X while other states just tell the MLK “fairy tale” and keep it moving. Let’s tighten up, schools.

Congratulations, Arizona: You’re Still Really, Really Racist For Having “Accent Monitors” In Classrooms

Arizona’s working really hard to become the most racist state in the union and it gets closer to achieving that goal every day. It turns out that the Arizona school board was sending representatives to classrooms to check and make sure that the teachers weren’t speaking with thick accents. That’s right. They didn’t want teachers with accents that indicated Hispanic heritage to teach their students. Some teachers even allege that they were sent to speech pathologists and acting coaches to help them get rid of their accents. After enough uproar, the city finally relented: After almost a decade of sending monitors to classrooms across the state to check on teachers’ articulation, recently made a sharp about-face on the issue. A federal investigation of possible civil rights violations prompted the state to call off its accent police. “To my knowledge, we have not seen policies like this in other states,” Russlynn H. Ali, the assistant federal secretary of education for civil rights, said in an interview. She called it “good news” that Arizona had altered its policy. It’s good to see that they’re changing the policy but…it’s pretty freaking ridiculous that this was even a rule in the first place. SMH.
