Tupac’s Mom, Afeni Shakur, Arrested For Drug Possession

She is due back in court in May to face three drug charges. By Mawuse Ziegbe Afeni Shakur-Davis Photo: Annette Brown/ Getty Images Afeni Shakur, the activist mother of late hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur, was arrested for felony drug possession in Lumberton, North Carolina, earlier this month. According to The Fayetteville Observer, the ex-Black Panther was charged April 16 with felony possession of marijuana, simple possession of a controlled substance and maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance. Reps for Afeni and Lumberton Police had not responded MTV News’ requests for comment at press time. Since her son was fatally shot in 1996, Afeni has stayed busy upholding his legacy. She founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in 1997, which provides arts and education programs for young people and mounts an annual performing-arts summer camp for youth from troubled homes. Afeni’s Amaru Entertainment was engaged in a legal battle with film company Morgan Creek last year over a movie about the rapper’s life, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Afeni has also managed music from Tupac that was unreleased while the star was alive. Afeni’s battle with drug use is mentioned in Tupac’s hit 1995 song “Dear Mama.” When renovating the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation’s center in 2005, Afeni told MTV News that her tough past was a catalyst for starting an arts foundation. “When Tupac was 13 and I was homeless,” she said, “Tupac was in the 127th Street Ensemble [theater group] right here in New York. Those people, I believe, saved his life. So what we try to do is be that for the next generation of young people.” The Observer reports that bail was set at $10,000, and Afeni is currently out on bond, according to court reports. She is due back in Robeson County District Court on May 10. Related Artists Tupac

Guru’s Sister Talks About His Death, Memorial Plans

Patricia Elam says there may be a public memorial on Gang Starr MC’s birthday, July 17. By Shaheem Reid Guru Patricia Elam, the older sister of late Gang Starr MC Keith “Guru” Elam, said her family learned about his passing through the media — one day after he died. Elam alleges that Solar, Guru’s medical proxy , longtime business partner and musical collaborator, never told the Elams of Guru’s death. “[My son] Justin found out on the Internet and called me. I had to call my dad,” Patricia told MTV News Tuesday (April 27) via phone. “[Keith’s 9-year-old son] KC found out riding in the car, hearing it on the radio. That’s not right if you care about someone. That’s not how you treat them. My brother would never have wanted us to find out that way. Never in a million years. Especially his son. Come on, now.” Solar told MTV News last week that he has “nothing but the utmost respect” for Guru’s family , but acknowledged that the relationship “got weird in the end.” Patricia, said that learning of her sibling’s death was only part of their nightmare. When the family inquired with the hospital as to the whereabouts of Elam’s body, they were told it was on its way to a funeral home to be cremated. “The hospital released the body in [Solar’s] care. I don’t know how it was determined what funeral home it would go to,” Patricia explained. “My son Justin was looking online and saw something that the body was going to be cremated. My father was calling the hospital looking for the body and they were like, ‘We released it to the health-care proxy.’ Luckily my other brother happened to be in New York on something unrelated and he started calling funeral homes in the area, if you can imagine. Fortunately the third one he called was the right one. He said, ‘Listen, I’m the brother of Keith Elam, do not release that body to anyone but me.’ Thankfully he was able to get there in time.” Ms. Elam says that eventually the family did cremate Guru’s body, as it was his wish. “The cremation has already occurred,” she explained. “For our family, we’ll have our own private memorial.” Patricia also revealed that the Elams do understand that Guru’s fans would like to celebrate his life and legacy as well, and that a public memorial for his fans is being discussed that would take place on what would have been the MC’s 49th birthday, July 17. “I don’t have any more specifics at this point in time,” she said. “There’s also talk of a musical tribute; I don’t have the specifics on that yet. We want something for the public and for fans. We’re also working on website so fans can post things. We’ve gotten so many wonderful, loving messages and tributes from around the world. We want fans to have a place for that.” Post your memories of Gang Starr and Guru in the comments section below. Crystal Bowersox Scoring Hometown Radio Play With ‘Holy Toledo’

Local radio station began playing ‘American Idol’ frontrunner’s song last week By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX There’s still a month left to go on “American Idol,” but frontrunner Crystal Bowersox is already reaping the benefits of a winner. As of last week, Bowersox could be heard twice a day on the radio on Toledo, Ohio’s 101.5-FM , which is located near her hometown of Elliston, Ohio, crooning the original acoustic folk ballad “Holy Toledo.” Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience “We have Crystal pride around here,” said Tom Cook, the station’s program director. “It’s not just a radio thing, it’s a cool thing for the people around here to see someone with that kind of talent on a national platform.” While assembling a Bowersox video page copy of Crystal’s performances from the show, someone at the rock station noticed the homage to the singer’s hometown and brought it to Cook’s attention. “I thought, ‘It’s not just a great song, but it mentions our city!’,” he said about the contemplative tune. After dubbing the song from a YouTube video, Cook put it into rotation on May 20 and it’s been getting around 15 spins a week since then. So far, he said the station has gotten a number of curious calls about the tune, but no contact from any of the half dozen or more Bowersox family members who live in the area. “I hope they feel good about it,” said Cook. “From her perspective I would think it would be cool to have a radio station in your hometown playing your song.” Though no other stations have picked up the song as far as he knows, “Holy Toledo” has gotten enough spins to make to it to #90 on the “American Idol” airplay chart, according to USA Today , making MamaSox the only one of this year’s contestants to crash the chart. Gutter Bitch Uses HIV to Get Revenge on her Baby Daddy of the Day

This is what’s wrong with America, or at least Jacksonville Florida and that’s that people are uneducated, poor, gutter trash. This story is straight out of the fucking projects… In this clip you will here some bitch from the project who hates her baby daddy so much, for whatever reason, that I can only assume is probably not that big of a deal, so she got her friend who she knew was HIV positive to sleep with him…she set the fucker up and called it into the radio show because I guess she thought it was a good idea, but that shit is beyond fucking gutter, it’s insanity and the scariest thing about all this is that there’s a kid involved, proving that some people need to have their uterus removed and not just any trash should be able to reproduce, they need to issue licenses for that shit…. Ghetto.

Phoenix Talk Soundtrack To New Sofia Coppola Film, ‘Somewhere’

‘This is the first time we feel [that] the music fits to the picture,’ bassist Deck D’Arcy says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Phoenix Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images Earlier this year, fresh off winning a Grammy for Best Alternative Album (and having an interesting exchange with “Jersey Shore” star Snooki on the red carpet, Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars told BBC Radio that his band has written a “very minimal” soundtrack for his girlfriend Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film “Somewhere.” “It was more about trying to make a sound that fits with a Ferrari and the city of Los Angeles,” Mars told the BBC about the soundtrack. “It was more of an engineer work than a composer.” It sounded intriguing, so when MTV Radio caught up with Mars’ Phoenix bandmates, they asked about the “Somewhere” score — which, according to press release from Focus Features , stars Stephen Dorff as a “bad-boy actor” who gets an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter — they tried to pry some additional details out of ’em. Turns out, there’s going to be a whole lot more than Ferrari sounds on the soundtrack: The band’s song “Love Like a Sunset” also features heavily. “She asked us to do some music, very in the spirit of ‘Love Like a Sunset,’ so we tried to put that track and elements of the track in the movie, and it worked well,” Phoenix guitarist Christian Mazzalai said. “And then we wrote very small pieces of music, very minimal music for the movie too. … We’re very proud of it.” “This is the first time we feel [that] the music fits to the picture,” bassist Deck D’Arcy added. “We’ve [been on] many soundtracks before, and it’s always weird for us — producers must like [our songs], of course it if they use them — but for us, it’s always weird to see them in the films.” Mazzalai and D’Arcy wouldn’t divulge more about the soundtrack (though they did say “Somewhere” would be in theaters “sometime in the fall,”) and while this isn’t the first time their music has been used by Coppola in a film — their “Too Young” was featured in her 2003 film “Lost in Translation” — this is the first time they’ve tried their hands at actually writing a score. And they admit it’s a process they’re still getting used to. “It was like in ‘Lost in Translation,’ when they used our song in a scene, it’s funny, but it’s weird for us,” Mazzalai laughed. “We didn’t believe it. So this is the first time we feel like the images match the music. But we still don’t believe it.” Related Artists Phoenix

Ryan Phillippe to Media: Stop $hiting on Me!

Ryan Phillippe is sick of the press referring to him as a jerk. This may be a crazy thought, but perhaps the jerk of an actor should have thought of that before he cheated on Reese Witherspoon. Phillippe actually shared this thought with Howard Stern after a rep for Abbie Cornish announced that his client and the Stop-Loss star had broken up in February. The actor’s beef? He and Cornish privately ended their four-year relationship face-to-face, so why the get the press involved: “Who announces a breakup?” he asked. “I don’t understand that! There’s no need for that.” Note to Phillippe: you’re a public figure. Get over it. Phillippe continued to rant to the radio host. “I’m tired of getting s-it on,” he said. “I don’t feel like I deserve it. Things happen! How many people have you broken up with over your life?” How many A-list, Oscar-winning actresses – with whom we’ve borne two children – have we cheated on with another young starlet, you mean? Zero, thanks for asking. Moreover, who is crapping on Ryan Phillippe?!? The guy is hosting Saturday Night Live this week. He’s worked steadily for years. Sounds to us like the actor is throwing himself an attention-grabbing pity party. Don’t RSVP, readers! In closing, Phillippe said he and Witherspoon, who share joint custody of their kids, have mended all fences: “It’s gotten to a place where we’re great friends and great co-parents.” That’s great. Now stop whining, dude.
