Universal Shares 100 Factoids For its 100th Anniversary

It’s not every day that a studio turns 100. As such, Universal is making the most of its centennial with a host of events including the recent Tribeca Film Festival shout out to the the company courtesy of Robert DeNiro and Judd Apatow . But today, April 30, is the big day itself, and to kick off the first day of its second century, the company released “100 fun facts” from its history. The list includes many factoids sure to show up on a crossword puzzle near you, such as the name of the mechanical shark in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws , what happened to the hole left by John Belushi when he smashed in a wall with his guitar in Animal House , and the store where the crew from American Pie bought that “warm apple pie” subsequently deflowered by Jason Biggs. There’s the skinny on what inspired Carl Laemmle to name his studio Universal a century ago. Fans and film enthusiasts can celebrate online today at the official Universal Centennial website . Meanwhile, read on for 100 facts about Universal: 1. Universal Film Manufacturing Company was officially incorporated in New York on April 30, 1912. Company legend says Carl Laemmle was inspired to name his company Universal after seeing “Universal Pipe Fittings” written on a passing delivery wagon.   2. The only physical damage made during the filming of National Lampoon’s Animal House was when John Belushi made a hole in the wall with a guitar. The actual Sigma Nu fraternity house (which subbed for the fictitious Delta House) never repaired it, and instead framed the hole in honor of the film.    3. The working title for E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial was “A Boy’s Life.”                                                                                                      4. In the movie All Quiet on the Western Front , the Greek writing on the blackboard in the schoolroom is the beginning of Homer’s Odyssey: “Tell me, oh Muse, of that ingenious hero who traveled far and wide.”   5. Over a decade later, when Phil Alden Robinson worked with Affleck on the production of The Sum of All Fears , Affleck said, “Nice working with you again.”   32. In the coliseum scenes in Gladiator , only the bottom two decks are actually filled with people. Exclusive: ‘Planet Of The Apes’ Sequel Rising In Summer 2014

Fox CEO confirms to MTV News that Andy Serkis is ‘fully committed’ to return as the rebel ape leader, Caesar. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andy Serkis’ character in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” Photo: 20th Century FOX If you haven’t seen one of last summer’s finest blockbusters or somehow didn’t understand the implication of the film’s give-away-the-ending title, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” concludes with the highly evolved apes poised to take over the world. Where exactly the story will pick up in Fox’s planned sequel is something filmmakers haven’t quite cracked, but now we know exactly when audiences will get a chance to check it out. “That will be a summer ’14 movie,” Fox head honcho Tom Rothman exclusively told MTV News at CinemaCon at Las Vegas. Director Rupert Wyatt is locked in to return to the director’s chair after the first film in the rebooted franchise grossed over $480 million worldwide. And Andy Serkis, who wowed moviegoers with his motion-captured portrayal of rebel ape leader, Caesar — a performance that without a doubt deserved high-profile awards-season love but didn’t receive any — is also set to reprise his role. “Andy’s fully committed to it,” Rothman said. But what about that question of when in the franchise timeline the sequel will begin? During the original film’s post-credits sequence, we saw the genetically engineered virus created by James Franco’s scientist begin to spread across the globe, thanks to one infected patient’s ill-advised airplane trip. How much time will have passed between that pandemic and the start of the sequel has not been decided. “I think one of the big questions they’re wrestling with now, which is kind of the fun, is how far forward do we skip?” Rothman said. “When does it start? Does it start the next day? The next year? Does it start in 10 years? Does it start in 50 years?” Part of that storytelling decision will also have to take into account a third film, because as Rothman reaffirmed, Fox is planning “Apes” as a trilogy. And he’ll accept nothing less than scripts that are even better than the original’s. “The script for that ‘Apes’ film was fantastic,” Rothman explained. “We had the script for 10 years, and I always knew it was one of the best scripts. I just didn’t think it was possible to do it. I thought it couldn’t be done. … We got to have a great script. Because now, having made that good a movie, we better make the next one better.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

One Direction’s Harry Styles’ Celebrity Crushes Reveal Taste For Older Women

Styles says he’d like to date Angelina Jolie, Kate Moss or Kate Winslet. By Jocelyn Vena Harry Styles Photo: Getty Images One Direction ‘s Harry Styles is opening up about the older ladies he’s crushing on, and nowhere in there was Taylor Swift’s name mentioned, despite rumors that something romantic might have been brewing. According to the Sun out of the U.K., the floppy-haired boy bander is crushing on three ladies even older than 22-year-old Swift: The 18-year-old shared that, if given the chance, he would date Angelina Jolie (36), Kate Moss (38) or Kate Winslet (36). Any of those three wouldn’t be his first older woman: He previously dated 32-year-old TV presenter Caroline Flack. For any girl out there who is not one of those three superstars and is looking for a way to catch the singer’s attention, Styles candidly revealed what he likes his ladies to wear. “I like my girlfriends to wear black lingerie … definitely,” he shared. But, the romance talk didn’t end there. He noted that if he sees a lady he thinks is pretty, well, he doesn’t exactly have any smooth lines he likes to use on her. “I’m not really a pick-up-line guy. I don’t know what I do,” he confessed. Harry has been linked to quite a few ladies since 1D dropped their debut album, Up All Night, last month — none of which have been Winslet, Jolie or Moss. However, his list of rumored ladies does include American singer Lily Halpern, New York-based photographer Sarah-Louise Colivet, Victoria’s Secret model Emma Ostilly and former “Bachelorette” Jillian Harris. With some time off before the guys kick off their U.S. tour next month, Styles is opening up about his favorite places and how he’s looking forward to the downtime. “I’m so tired. It was pretty intense, but a lot of fun. I have six weeks to chill out now,” he told BBC Radio 1 . “My favorite places were New York and Sydney. I’d never been to Australia or New Zealand before, so that was sick.” Share your thoughts on Harry Styles’ celebrity crushes in the comments below! Related Artists One Direction

Boy Band Allegiances: Why They Matter

In honor of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands, Above the Buzz breaks down boy-band mania and why picking a favorite really matters. By Jocelyn Vena The Wanted Photo: Island Def Jam There’s a full-on war happening out in the pop trenches. That war is being fought on the battlefield of the hearts of teen girls everywhere. The soldiers? Well, they are the new bevy of boy bands that are dominating the charts, the airwaves and the conversation. Some people ( mostly some older men that I know ) are confused by it. They may not understand why anyone should care about boy bands. Well, here’s why we do care: I think the rest of us are kind of into that joyful feeling of youthful exuberance that comes with boy bands. That feeling those five guys give you when they sing to you about love and how pretty you are. Heck, we’ve all been there. We’ve all had our Nick Carters or Justin Timberlakes. These days, some girls are proudly waving their freak flags and declaring their devotion to always-cheeky British boy band the Wanted . Meanwhile, other girls prefer the floppy-haired, puppy love vibe of One Direction . Either way, these guys are using well-produced pop tunes about the nuances of romance to win you (or your little sister or teen cousin or some other young woman you know) over. And those girls feel they must decide — they have to pick a band. Girls, I understand that strife. Listen, I’ve been there. I spent my formidable early teen years at the height of the greatest boy-band battle of all time: the Backstreet Boys vs. ‘NSYNC . Yep, I survived it. Like Katniss in “The Hunger Games.” They were like the Peeta and Gale of the pop world. Who would I choose? Well, I chose. And I’ve never doubted my choice. So, to aid you with this modern-day boy-band dilemma, here’s some handy advice to help you navigate the murky waters of a boy-band-pocalypse. Back then, I happily declared “BSB for life!” Sure, I enjoyed ‘NSYNC a lot. I had all their albums, saw them in concert, may have wondered what it would be like to date one of them. I was hardly a boy-band rookie at that point. As a kid, I had already been pretty obsessed with the New Kids on the Block. “Please Don’t Go Girl?” Psh, try, “Please don’t go guys … ever.” My love for boy bands has been and will always be a lifelong commitment. The fever I had for the Backstreet Boys was beyond. It was “wake up early to wait in line for concert tickets” obsessed. It was “get my VCR ready to tape their appearance on ‘TRL’ ” crazed. It was “break out my boom box and make mixtapes of their radio appearances and play them back … over and over” fevered. I had posters and T-shirts and concert stubs and more posters and T-shirts and albums and concert specials and everything BSB. I loved the guys so much that I may have even attempted to pen songs that I thought the guys might want to sing. (And no, you can’t ever read them or hear them. I’m no Max Martin.) So, as you can see, I get it. I get how you can love a band that much. But you might be wondering, how did I pick a side? Well, that’s not easy to put into words. I just did it — I just picked with my heart. I think when it comes to identifying with a boy band, it’s just something you feel in your gut. It’s their music, their brand of boy-band bravado, their flavor. Their sheer existence and the way it speaks to you. Why did I pick the Backstreet Boys? I don’t know. I just loved them. Those songs, those melodies. Man, it didn’t get better than that. They just spoke to me on some subatomic level. I mean, who could not pick a band who tells you “I’ll never break your heart/ I’ll never make you cry”? Now, as I watch a new generation of girls caught up in boy-band mania, I get it. These are the boys you crush on. These are the boys you pin your girlhood dreams on. So, get caught up in the fever, girls. It only happens once. Blast the tunes, go to the shows, buy the merchandise. I promise you, one day when you’re all grown-up, you’ll look back on this time fondly. Why? Well, to put it simply, nothing is better than your first boy band. Nothing. Voting in round two of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits for their boy-band video takeovers each day and make sure to spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates! Madonna Promises ‘A Feast For The Eyes’ On MDNA Tour

Singer has reportedly enlisted fashion guru Jean-Paul Gaultier to design the costumes for the tour, which kicks off May 29. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rob Imbriani Madonna Photo: MTV News Madonna is several weeks out from launching her MDNA tour . That means she’s working hard on getting every aspect of the show just right, from the music to the design to the looks. Given that Madonna is famous for her spectacular stage shows, fans of the glitzy singer have high expectations for the jaunt, which will kick off on May 29 in Tel Aviv, and will wrap around the globe before planting Stateside on August 28 in Philadelphia. When MTV News caught up with singer at the launch of her Truth or Dare perfume in New York City , she revealed that fans should expect this latest excursion to be just as eye-catching as the ones that came before. “Amazing music, incredible dancing, the team of people that I worked with for the Super Bowl is working with me on this as well,” she explained about the show, which she is currently rehearsing for. And, in the end, she hopes it will be “a feast for the eyes and the ears.” Given how decadent her Roman- and Egyptian-themed Super Bowl performance was, full of acrobatics, sparkling costumes and enough diva-tude to make Cleopatra jealous, it seems that Madge is taking all the right steps to capture that eye-popping essence for her traveling stage show. With a set list floating around that includes tracks like fan favorites “Secret” and “Deeper and Deeper,” as well as new tracks like “Turn Up the Radio” and “Girl Gone Wild,” she’s even enlisted her longtime fashion guru, Jean-Paul Gaultier, to design the costumes for the tour, according to Pink Is The New Blog . He’s worked with her on her Confessions Tour, her Re-Invention Tour, the Drowned World Tour and her Blond Ambition Tour. He’s also the man who designed her famous cone bra. It seems that the Queen of Pop will rule Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum starting at the end of this month through mid-May, according to Newsday . The pop singer and her team are rumored to have rented out the space to rehearse, but she has no plans to stop there during the tour. Madge dropped her album, MDNA , last month. Are you planning on seeing Madge on tour? Let us know in the comments!

My name is Belen and I’m from Uruguay. I’ve always…

My name is Belen and I’m from Uruguay. I’ve always wanted to go to a Justin Bieber concert and I always said that when Justin came to Argentina I would go to his show. I saved money to get front row tickets, I saved for over 1 year. I was planning on going with a friend of mine that is a huge fan too. I became a member of BieberFever so I could buy pre-sale tickets and maybe try to win meets & greets, but when they announced when tickets would go on sale, my friend said she wouldn’t come with me, so I ended up with no tickets. I was honestly devastated, it was my dream to go to one of his concerts and I even had saved enough money to buy front row tickets. One day my friend (that was coming to the show with me but cancelled) called me and told me she was going to see Justin with her mother, she had family in Argentina and they had bought those 2 tickets. I couldnt believe it, she was going with her mum and I wasn’t going, I felt so betrayed. So I didn’t know I was going to his concert until a few days before the show! I saw that a company was selling tickets for the 2nd date in Argentina. They were expensive but I really wanted to get them, it was my chance! I asked my mum but again I didn’t have anyone to come with me. I asked my cousin (30 years old) and she said she would ask her boss. I had written a rap with a friend for Justin a few months before, so I decided I would record myself rapping it and send it to BieberFever to try to win meets & greets. My cousin called me and told me she would come with me to the show! I started crying, I called my dad to tell him to buy the tickets as soon as possible, I called my brothers, my mum my friends, everyone! The show was in less than a week! My parents book a hotel room (the cheapest of course, just for 1 night), the buquebus and the tickets. All of this 3 days before the show.. it was crazy! I then saw I had an email from BieberFever. I opened it and it said that I HAD WON MEETS & GREETS to meet Justin! The next day I woke up at 6am to take the ship to go to Argentina with my cousin. When we were waiting in line for the m&g, everyone was freaking out and crying before getting in, but I was relaxed. I couldn’t believe I was going to meet my idol in a few minutes. I then saw ALFREDO FLORES walking past us and everyone said hi but didn’t pay him much attention. I wanted to actually talk to him, so I waited for him to come back and I walked up to him and told him I was from Uruguay. I asked him for a picture he said of course. Then it was time.  THERE HE WAS, MY IDOL, JUSTIN BIEBER, TOUCHING HIS HAIR AND LOOKING HOT. I hugged him and he kissed my cheek. I told him I had written a rap for him and he looked at me and said, “REALLY? THANK YOU SO MUCH”. I gave it to him and a letter I had written for him and he put it in his back pocket of his jeans. Kenny told us to look to the camera and smile (I was already smiling obviously) Then Justin told us, “THANK YOU SO MUCH, ENJOY THE SHOW!” I hugged him and we had to leave , as soon as I left the room I started shaking and crying. I couldn’t believe that had just happened. I waited ousite for the rest of the girls to finish and Alfredo was filming/taking pictures of me while I was crying . I hid my face cause it was embarrassing so he HUGGED me, he was so cute! The show was AMAZING, Justin killed it! To conclude, October 13th 2011 was the best day of my life.  More: My name is Belen and I’m from Uruguay. I’ve always…

I went to Radio Disney and I found out Justin would be there on…

I went to Radio Disney and I found out Justin would be there on Monday to promote Boyfriend! I was stoked to get a chance to meet him especially since Radio Disney is in Burbank, CA by my mom’s work.  Fast forward to Monday, I went to my home school session but this time it was particularly hard to focus taking an english test. My phone kept buzzing with Justin’s tweets. Right after it ended, we drove to Burbank. My mom went into a shop so I decided to call Radio Disney offices and found out he was already there ! I begged my mom and she rushed as fast as she could to get there. We got to the studio and I saw girls so I figured he hadn’t left yet! I was becoming anxious of meeting Justin because this time to the line up of things I’ve done for him, I wrote a song and posted it on YouTube and I had so much to tell him. About 1 hour after waiting, he came out of the station and there he was talking to Shelby, I was so nervous but I had to try. I lightly tapped him and poked him o n the shoulder and gave him the Bieber dictionary I made him. He did this cute hug thing to it, then I asked him for a picture but since my mom was taking it, it didn’t come out. So he took a picture with another girl and I had to ask him for another one. While we were taking our picture, I told him about how I’d been waiting to give him the dictionary face to face since 2010 and he was like, “Really?” and I was like, “Yeah and you don’t even follow me on Twitter,” and he was like, “What’s your twitter” and was getting ready to pull his phone out and follow me! I was like it’s in there and I pointed to the dictionary. Then I put my hand out and I was like, “Promise me you’ll follow me on Twitter?” And he took my hand and looked me in the eyes and was like “I promise” and I was like and, “You’ll read my letter?” And he said, “..and I’ll read your letter!” I can honestly say it was all worth it, all the times HATERS told me I’d never meet Justin again, or being a belieber is just a waste of time. They were all wrong. Justin if your reading this, thank you, for giving me the strength to believe in my dreams again, and I truly hope someday well sing together. You’re my inspiration, my role model, and a big influence on my life! By the way you never followed me lol.  To all the Beliebers reading this NEVER SAY NEVER! -@ BieberinLa95 Song I wrote for Justin The rest is here: I went to Radio Disney and I found out Justin would be there on…

China Censors Titanic 3D Nudes for Fear of Audience Participation

Kate Winslet ‘s chest icebergs were restored for Titanic 3D ‘s Indian release, but censors in China are now denying viewers in their country the same, uhm, release. The skinfamous scene where Kate instructs Leonardo DiCaprio to “draw me like one of your French girls” has been cut from Titanic 3D on the orders of China’s State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television, who justified their decision in a statement: “Considering the vivid 3D effects, we fear that viewers may reach out their hands for a touch and thus interrupt other people’s viewing. To avoid potential conflicts between viewers and out of consideration of building a harmonious ethical social environment, we’ve decided to cut off the nudity scenes.” So if you ever find yourself in a Chinese movie theater, don’t reach out and touch someone. But the real irony here is that the nude scene was included when the original Titanic played Chinese theaters in 1997. 2D boobs? Ok by China. 3D boobs? Not so much.
