Justice For Trayvon: Rallies Gather In 100 Cities To Demand Federal Civil Rights Charges Against Child Killer George Zimmerman

The entire nation is demanding justice for Trayvon Martin ! Rallies Gather For Trayvon Martin One week after a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, people gathered nationwide Saturday to press for federal civil rights charges against the former neighborhood watch leader , and to call for changes in the nation’s self-defense laws. Via HuffPo reports: The Florida case has become a flashpoint in separate but converging national debates over self-defense, guns, and race relations. Zimmerman, who successfully claimed that he was protecting himself when he shot Martin, identifies himself as Hispanic. Martin was black. For some attendees, particularly those who are black, the rallies seemed as much about those larger issues as about the verdict. “It’s personal,” said Cincinnati resident Chris Donegan, whose 11-year-old son wore a hoodie to the rally, as Martin did the night he died. “Anybody who is black with kids, Trayvon Martin became our son.” Chants rang out across the rallies. “Justice! Justice! Justice! … Now! Now! Now!” “`We won’t forget.” “No justice! No peace!” Many also sang hymns, prayed and held hands. And plenty of participants carried signs: “Who’s next?” “I am Trayvon Martin.” “Enough Is Enough.” Most rallies began at noon. In New York, hundreds of people – including Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, and music superstars Jay-Z and Beyonce – gathered in the heat . Fulton told the crowd she was determined to fight for societal and legal changes needed to ensure that black youths are no longer viewed with suspicion because of their skin color. “I promise you I’m going to work for your children as well,” she told the crowd. At a morning appearance at Sharpton’s headquarters in Harlem, she implored people to understand that the tragedy involved more than Martin alone. “Today it was my son. Tomorrow it might be yours,” she said. In Atlanta, speakers noted that the rally occurred in the shadows of federal buildings named for two figures who had vastly differing views on civil rights and racial equality: Richard B. Russell was a Georgia governor and U.S. senator elected in the Jim Crow South; Martin Luther King Jr. is the face of African-Americans’ civil rights movement. “What’s so frightening about a black man in a hood?” said the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who now occupies the pulpit at King’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. “History would suggest that we have plenty of data to be worried when we see other folk moving through our neighborhoods in hoods. Some of them have on pinstripe suits – but in their hearts, they’re wearing a hood.” In addition to pushing the Justice Department to investigate civil rights charges against Zimmerman, Sharpton told supporters In New York that he wants to see a rollback of “stand your ground” self-defense laws. “We are trying to change laws so that this never, ever happens again,” Sharpton said. “Stand your ground” laws are on the books in more than 20 states, and they go beyond many older, traditional self-defense statutes. In general, the newer laws eliminate a person’s duty to retreat, if possible, in the face of a serious physical threat. Zimmerman didn’t invoke “stand your ground,” relying instead on a traditional self-defense argument, but the judge included a provision of the law in the jurors’ instructions, allowing them to consider it as a legitimate defense. Race Matters: Three White NY High School Students Allowed To Perform Chris Brown And Rih-Rih “Beating” Skit In BLACKFACE At School Pep Rally!!!

We couldn’t make this fawkery up if we tried… Three White New York High School Students Reenact Chris Brown-Rihanna Beating In Blackface Via CNN iReport At the most resent Pep Rally for Waverly High School, located in Waverly NY, the usual fanfare of cheering for the home team to get them ready was in full swing. As the rally progressed you had your usual cheers and rally cries for the fall sports teams and the football team. It seemed to have done well, with Waverly defeating their opponent 70-21. But what happened at that pep rally went much farther than simple cheers. Three white students were to perform a skit in black face, depicting Chris Brown and Rhianna most notibly. In this skit they would display acts of domestic violence as satire to an audience that included not only students but parents, faculty, and various members of the media and community leaders. None of them stopped the skit. Now former students of Waverly High School are questioning how this was allowed to happen.” I think it’s unconscionable that such blatant racism has been tacitly approved two years in a row,” says Waverly alumni and Yale graduate Vlad Chituc. “The administration should be creating an environment where minorities are welcome, not the butts of racist jokes that make light of domestic violence.” Fellow former Waverly student Hannah Van Wie-Desisti shared sentiments with her former schoolmate: “I used to be so proud of where I came from. Not so much now due to the recent incident. I found it unfathomable that the faculty would not only approve this idea for the skit in the first place, but allow it to go on during the pep rally. I honestly don’t believe that the students meant to offend, but were just ill informed of how offending their skit actually was. The staff should have stopped it before it even started. By acting like the skit was acceptable, they are teaching their students that racism is okay and that abuse is humorous. The whole thing outraged me and made me so disappointed in the school that I was once loved.” The offensive nature of what took place is made even more concerning know that in order for a skit to take place at the rally it had to be OK’ed by the administration of the school. A comment from the school district was not available at this time. Anyone that saw Rihanna’s face after the fact knows that there is nothing to laugh at, and to reenact the skit in blackface is just the racist cherry on top. Guess even white folks can be ni**ers too SMMFH Images via CNN

Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert Plan March On Washington

Comedians plan to lampoon Glenn Beck rally on October 30, with competing political events on the National Mall. By Gil Kaufman Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Photo: Mathew Imaging/ Getty Images If you happen to be in Washington D.C. on October 30 and wake up to find yourself surrounded by a sea of Sarah Palins and Glenn Becks, don’t freak out. They’re probably just getting ready for Halloween by putting on their GOP finest for a march down to a pair of protests planned for that day on the National Mall by “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart and his fake Republican brother-in-comedy, Stephen Colbert, of the “Colbert Report.” For two weeks now, Stewart has been teasing news of a big announcement, with Colbert threatening to one-up his former boss with his own major announcement, and on Thursday they finally spilled the beans about their plans. “Tonight, I bring you, the actual announcement!” Stewart thundered. He was addressing, he said, the 70 to 80 percent of Americans we don’t see on TV screaming about their political convictions while wearing funny hats, toting misspelled signs and likening our political leaders to Hitler. “Tonight, I announce the Rally to Restore Sanity. It is happening, people! … a real gathering. We will gather on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. A Million Moderate March, where we take to the streets to send a message to our leaders and our national media that say, ‘We are here, but we’re only here until 6 because we have a sitter.’ A clarion call for rationality!” Both rallies are in response to Fox News talker Beck’s recent Restoring Hope event, which they have lampooned mercilessly for weeks, poking fun at everything from the fuzzy math on how many attendees were there to see Palin to the seemingly contradictory message about faith and hope after Beck’s nonstop bashing of President Obama for using hope as a trope in his 2008 presidential campaign. On the Rally to Restore Sanity website , Stewart went into a bit more detail about his inspiration for the event. “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!” reads the intro on the site’s homepage. “Who among us has not wanted to open their window and shout that at the top of their lungs? Seriously, who? Because we’re looking for those people. We’re looking for the people who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive, and terrible for your throat; who feel that the loudest voices shouldn’t be the only ones that get heard; and who believe that the only time it’s appropriate to draw a Hitler mustache on someone is when that person is actually Hitler. Or Charlie Chaplin in certain roles.” Unlike Beck, who said it was just coincidence that he schedule last month’s event in the same place and on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, Stewart said the date of his gathering has “no significance whatsoever” and it’s aimed at people who are too busy to go to rallies because they have “lives and families and jobs (or are looking for jobs).” The comedian is hoping for a giant mass of people, but mostly he’d like some subversive, silly fun to go down. “Think of our event as Woodstock, but with the nudity and drugs replaced by respectful disagreement; the Million Man March, only a lot smaller, and a bit less of a sausage fest; or the Gathering of the Juggalos , but instead of throwing our feces at Tila Tequila, we’ll be actively *not* throwing our feces at Tila Tequila,” he promised. “Join us in the shadow of the Washington Monument. And bring your indoor voice. Or don’t. If you’d rather stay home, go to work, or drive your kids to soccer practice … Actually, please come anyway. Ask the sitter if she can stay a few extra hours, just this once. We’ll make it worth your while.” Colbert’s message about his rival March to Keep Fear Alive gathering was appropriately more red, white and blue, tinged with a bit of green, as in envy for his recent Emmy loss to Stewart. “America, the Greatest Country God ever gave Man, was built on three bedrock principles: Freedom. Liberty. And Fear — that someone might take our Freedom and Liberty,” he wrote . “But now, there are dark, optimistic forces trying to take away our Fear — forces with salt-and-pepper hair and way more Emmys than they need. They want to replace our Fear with reason. But never forget — ‘Reason’ is just one letter away from ‘Treason.’ Coincidence? Reasonable people would say it is, but America can’t afford to take that chance.” Colbert encouraged his followers to pack an overnight bag with five extra pair of underwear, because “you’re going to need them.” Around 25,000 people are expected to attend the “competing” events, which will cap a week of tapings by both programs in the nation’s capital. Do you plan to attend either one of the rallies? Tell us in the comments!

Stewart & Colbert March to D.C. – Rally to Restore Sanity / Keep Fear Alive 10/30/10

What's that dull, scraping sound? It's Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, sharpening their knuckles for a face-off that promises to be bigger than Nixon/Kennedy, Ali/Foreman, Aniston/Jolie, 50/Nas, Joe/The Volcano, Alien/Predator, Bunny/Fudd and Ecks/Sever combined. On October 30, 2010, Jon and The Daily Show will lead the first-ever Rally to Restore Sanity on the National Mall in Washington D.C. — a movement of “people who have been too busy to go to rallies” — to beg America to stop shouting, throwing and drawing Hitler mustaches on people other than Hitler (or Charlie Chaplin). Not to be outdone, The Colbert Nation is calling on all freedom-loving patriots to challenge The Daily Show's dark, optimistic forces by marching on the Mall at the same time to help Keep Fear Alive. Which side are you on? Visit the rally pages and declare your allegiance! added by: Stoneyroad

Internet Petitions Stephen Colbert To Hold ‘Restoring Truthiness’ Rally At Lincoln Memorial

A grassroots campaign has begun to get Stephen Colbert to hold a rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to counter Glenn Beck's recent “Restoring Honor” event. The would-be rally has been dubbed “Restoring Truthiness” and was inspired by a recent post on Reddit, where a young woman wondered if the only way to point out the absurdity of the Tea Party's rally would be if Colbert mirrored it with his own “Colbert Nation.” Now with its own website and Facebook group with over 8,000 members, the call for Colbert to hold a rally is spreading through the Internet like wildfire. Aside from being a satire of Beck's rally, the petition claims the rally is necessary because, “Recently our nation has suffered a truthiness drain.” The website gives a history of the newly founded movement, with links to news stories and a poster for the rally, which proposes the date “10/10/10.” The website also states: “Restoring Truthiness is a true grassroots movement propelled by YOU, the citizens of the internetz. Our goal is simple: Petition Stephen Colbert to hold a Restoring Truthiness Rally for the American people.” Given Colbert's love for his “Nation” and ability to satirize the Right so effectively, this almost seems like something Colbert would have thought of himself. While he is on vacation at the moment, it will be interesting to see if he addresses the petition when he returns to host “The Colbert Report” next week. Those interested in furthering the movement have been asked to join the Facebook group, spread the word, or email support@colbertrally.com for more information. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/03/restoring-truthiness-colbert-rally-beck… added by: pjacobs51

ABC’s Tahman Bradley: Beck Rally’s ‘Crowd Was Almost All White, Giving Critics an Open Door’

On Sunday’s Good Morning America, during a report which focused on FNC host Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally and the hostile reaction from civil rights activists like the Reverend Al Sharpton, ABC correspondent Tahman Bradley asserted that “the crowd was almost all white, giving critics an open door.” After noting that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s niece – Dr. Alveda King – was a speaker at the rally, Bradley noted the racial makeup of Beck’s event: TAHMAN BRADLEY: Dr. King’s own niece, Alveda King, spoke. DR. ALVEDA KING, NIECE OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.: We need to rebuild America. BRADLEY: An obvious effort to try to show inclusion on this historic day, but the crowd was almost all white, giving critics an open door. REVEREND AL SHARPTON, CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST: We’re not giving them this day. This is our day, and we ain’t giving it away. And similar to reports on the rally that aired on GMA on Friday and Saturday, ABC used such labels as “controversial” and “conservative” to label Beck or his followers, but did not use ideological labels to refer to Sharpton, nor was the left-wing activist’s own controversial history mentioned.  In the opening teaser, substitute host Ron Claiborne asserted that the rally was “led by controversial conservatives Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin.” Below is a complete transcript of Bradley’s report from the Sunday, August 29, Good Morning America on ABC, with critical portions in bold : RON CLAIBORNE, IN OPENING TEASER: And rallying cry: Thousands descend on the Washington Mall for a rally led by controversial conservatives Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin . Is this new conservative movement gaining new momentum? … BIANNA GOLODRYGA: Turning to politics now and the competing rallies in Washington, D.C., on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech Saturday. At one, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. At the other, the Reverend Al Sharpton. Tahman Bradley was there. TAHMAN BRADLEY: Conservatives and Tea Party supporters came to the National Mall in droves, a rally cry from Fox News commentator Glenn Beck.
