Did ‘Hallelujah’ Earn Lee DeWyze A Ticket To ‘American Idol’ Finale?

The judges sure seemed to think so: ‘You just owned the entire night,’ Kara told Lee. By Kara Warner Lee DeWyze Photo: FOX At the beginning of Tuesday night’s (May 18) “American Idol,” Ryan Seacrest declared that the night’s performances were “a fight for the finale.” Well, according to the raucous applause and overwhelmingly positive reactions from the judges, Lee DeWyze won that fight. If DeWyze crushed his fellow contenders in round one, as Kara DioGuardi declared after his performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” he obliterated them in round two with his spin on the familiar “Idol” pick “Hallelujah.” Simon Cowell explained his selection for DeWyze as wanting “a moment” for the former paint-store worker . “We’ve heard this song before,” Cowell said, alluding to previous versions of the song from Jason Castro and even Tim Urban earlier this season. “We always talk about the moment. I wanted him to do something that shows he has the potential to be a great artist.” DeWyze started out his version of the now-classic Leonard Cohen song softly, slowly building (complete with string accompaniment and a small choir of backup singers) to the night’s undisputable highlight. At the end of the performance, the cameras panned to Simon, who gave a knowing nod. Randy Jackson said he’d been “waiting all season to see who’s going to throw down the real gauntlet to win the whole thing.” He gave credit to Simon’s song selection, then declared DeWyze’s performance as his “biggest moment on this show. That was unbelievable.” Ellen De Generes was glad Lee listened to Simon: “There’s really nothing more to be said. That was stunning. Just stunning.” Kara continued to pile on the praise: “Lee you are what this show is all about: somebody who starts in one place and ends up in an incredible epic moment. You just owned the entire night.” Cowell summed things up nicely: “I’m very, very proud of you. When we sat down last week, I put myself where you were. … This show has given you a break. Tonight, with that performance, you proved you are a fantastic singer and a great person. I really hope you make it to [the finale].” Next week, another Idol will be crowned. But first, one contestant will be eliminated Wednesday night. Who do you think it will be? Sound off in the comments! Crystal Bowersox And Lee Dewyze Earn High Praise From ‘American Idol’ Judges With ‘Falling Slowly’

The pair’s duet on song from ‘Once’ has judges raving on movie night. By Kara Warner Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze Photo: FOX Tuesday”s “American Idol”” was to be, in the words of Ryan Seacrest, “a theme fit for a star,” and all about paying tribute to the movies . And with cool-as-a-cucumber mentor Jamie Foxx and several interesting song selections in tow, the Top 4 gave it their all. Sort of. The judges agreed that the evening’s two duets, “Falling Slowly” by Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze; and “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” by Michael Lynche and Casey James, were better than the contestants’ solo performances. And there’s not much question that Crystal and Lee’s dueling-guitar version of the Oscar-winning “Once” tune sung by Glen Hansard and Mark

Siobhan Magnus Wins The Judges Back With ‘Any Man Of Mine’

‘Guess who’s back? Siobhan!’ Kara DioGuardi says after the Shania Twain Week performance. By Katie Byrne Siobhan Magnus performs on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: MTV News Country Week is always a wild card on “American Idol,” either forcing some creativity from contestants working out of their comfort zones or burying them alive. Since Siobhan Magnus is a bit of a wild card herself, she had no problem tackling Shania Twain Week and making it work for her big voice and oddball sensibility. Magnus chose “Any Man of Mine,” keeping a pretty traditional country arrangement but speeding it up a notch. Twain, who opened up her songbook for the week and acted as mentor, warned Magnus that the song is “all about attitude. You’ve got to put some attitude in those lyrics.” Siobhan stayed true to Shania’s vocals for most of the song — until the end, of course. For the grand finale, she let huge notes fly (including one of her trademark screeches) and unleashed some hair-metal-worthy guitars to match. The judges have given Magnus a hard time in the past for either coloring inside the lines or going way overboard. What did they think of this go-round? “I loved it,” Randy Jackson said, kicking off the positive reviews and complimenting her “punk/country” look. “Way to pull the Shania Twain into the station,” Ellen DeGeneres said, continuing her choo-choo Twain joke from her first critique. “Guess who’s back? Siobhan!” Kara DioGuardi enthused. Even Simon Cowell was into it, with one exception: “The screaming at the end may have gone a little bit … it was almost like you were giving birth up there.” What did you think of Siobhan’s performance? Did she get Shania’s “attitude” right? Let us know in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. American Idol Gives Back, Eliminates Tim Urban

The smile-filled journey of Tim Urban came to an end last night, as American Idol viewers voted this finalist off the show. The elimination didn’t come as a shock, giving Tim’s lackluster performance of “Better Days” on Tuesday, but the man that joined Urban in the bottom two may have surprised many: Casey James was finally punished for his lack of creativity on a weekly basis. As for the two-hour broadcast itself, Idol Gives Back is always an impressive event. It brings numerous A-listers together in the name of such charities as Save the Children. Among this year’s highlights: Wanda Sykes doing a stand-up routine in which she questioned the cruelty of making eliminated contestants sing the same song for which they were voted out. Mary J. Blige singing “Stairway to Heaven” with Randy Jackson on the guitar. A reunion of the top 12 stage on stage, as seen below. Annie Lennox taping a segment about an HIV-positive girl in Africa.
