Heejun Han Only Regrets Not Taking Off His Pants On ‘American Idol’

‘I don’t regret anything that I did,’ latest ‘Idol’ casualty says of his oddball, oft-hilarious run on the show. By James Montgomery Heejun Han Photo: MTV News Since his exit from “American Idol” , last week, Heejun Han has made the most of his post-show media blitz, openly pining for judge Jennifer Lopez , taking jabs at mentor Jimmy Iovine and, of course, suggesting Diddy may have been in the bag during his appearance on the show. Oh, and he also joked that he’s going to start watching “The Voice.” Needless to say, it’s been a wild ride — nearly as wild as his time on the show itself — so when Han stopped by the MTV newsroom on Monday (April 2), we asked him about all the comments he’s made since getting the boot. And, as you’d probably expect, he wasn’t about to apologize. “I’m just going to be me, that’s all,” Han said. “But I will say that the show itself was the greatest opportunity a person could ever have in their lifetime, I believe. A guy like me, who has less talent than any other contestant that’s on that stage made it this far was amazing. It was a God-given gift.” Of course, he took the same tack when asked about his now-infamous performance of Billy Joel’s “My Life,” in which he shed a tuxedo and sprinted through the audience, much to the annoyance of judge Steven Tyler and, judging by his getting voted off the show the following week, the majority of the “Idol” audience too. But does he regret doing any of it? In a word: No. “It’s supposed to be entertaining. It’s either [supposed to] make them cry, make them laugh, or make them pissed off about something. I felt like I at least did two of the three [with] Billy Joel,” he explained. “People ask me, ‘What would you do differently, because that’s the thing that caused you to go home?’ But only thing I’d do differently this time, if I could go back in time, then I’m not just going to take off my tuxedo, I’m also going to take off my pants. I don’t regret anything that I did; entertaining people is catching them out of nowhere, and I felt like I did it.” And to that end, Han said he’s proud of everything he accomplished during his time on “Idol,” because he’ll be the first to admit that he came into the competition with less experience than any of his fellow contestants. “I mean, Jessica Sanchez was singing when she was, like, a sperm,” he laughed. “My first non-Korean audience was Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez, and it just kept getting bigger.” And Han truly believes he left at the top, with his rendition of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You.” “I saw [elimination] coming. Everyone took the Billy Joel performance wrong … people might have taken it as a joke, and I just had to show them that I do really belong here, and I didn’t make it here by mistake. … I really wanted to finish on a high note,” he said. “I knew that was what the whole thing was all about, and if you listen to the song, lyric-wise, it says ‘A song for you.’ It was not a song for me to just be in this [competition], it’s a song for people who have been believing in me and supporting me, but this is my last stage, so, thank you guys.” What do you think of Heejun’s “Idol” elimination? Heejun Han on American Idol Elimination: Fair and Square!

It doesn’t sound like Heejun Han will be pulling an Erika Van Pelt. The season 11 finalist was eliminated from American Idol last night, but while Van Pelt has expressed disdain for the judges’ decision NOT to save her – saying in an interview that she feels shafted – Han spoke to reporters this morning and sounded at peace with the process. “It was way too early to use their card,” he said of the single veto permitted by the panel of three. “I’m pretty sure they’re saving it for some other people. It was fair and square.” Heejun Han – “A Song For You” Han also said that performing “My Life” was his favorite moment during the run, even if Steven Tyler wasn’t a fan of the comical rendition. “We had our different perspectives,” he said of his mini clash with the rocker. “I was trying to give a fun time to America because I thought it would be entertaining and fun. Maybe he took it wrong, but I can’t please everyone.” What does Han see next for himself? Randy Jackson joked he should star in his own sitcom, an idea Heejan is running with: “It should be an Asian guy who’s trying to go out with really pretty blonde girl. [Laughs.] Of course, I’m not going to be picky about anything. I really want to make something out of this.” And what advice does he have for future hopefuls? “It’s The Hunger Games , but it’s not killing each other. Why do you always have to be so serious when only one person is going to survive? You might as well have fun and have a thick skin and stay true to yourself.”

Will Hollie Cavanagh Get All the Votes That She Needs?

American Idol’s Hollie Cavanagh struggled a bit in her mentoring session, but she came through with flying colors on Dusty Springfield’s “All The Man That I Need.” Hollie definitely exudes a kind of Dusty Springfield vibe, both with her looks and with the arrangements she’s given, so it certainly works for her and then some. Mentor Mary J. Blige must have gotten through to her, as she gave Jessica Sanchez a run for her money for the night’s most complete female performance. “That’s the Hollie that I know from last year and this year,” said a wowed Jennifer Lopez, who’s predicting her for the finale after the following effort … Hollie Cavanagh – “All The Man That I Need” (American Idol Top 13)

Colton Dixon Makes Like Stevie Wonder on American Idol With "Lately"

Stevie Wonder. Colton Dixon. Those two things may seem like oil and water, and vocally, the latter’s rendition of the former’s “Lately” was not up there with the likes of Phillip Phillips . Nevertheless, he overcame any shortcomings in his pedigree and made do with effort and charisma … and besides, he’s got the heart throb thing down. How much you like Colton Dixon likely depends on your age and gender, and how far he lasts this season will hinge on whether he can expand that appeal. His “base” got him here, but he needs swing voters to carry him to the next level. Can it happen? An open question, but he’s not going home after this: Colton Dixon – “Lately” (American Idol Top 13)

Josh Ledet Makes a "Wish" on American Idol

“Mantasia” himself, Joshua Ledet, led off American Idol’s Top 13 with a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish” that he said was “totally out of my comfort zone.” With a little help from a piano player with a gospel background similar to Joshua’s, you wouldn’t have known it Wednesday night. He did a nice job with it. A pretty safe performance, perhaps, but a respectable one. “You just wore it out, at the top of the show,” Randy Jackson, never one to exaggerate at all, tells him. “You’ve got this amazing Church of God in Christ kind of voice … If you feel the beat and rock like that, you can sing anything.” Watch Josh Ledet perform below and see if you agree: Joshua Ledet – “I Wish” (American Idol Top 13)

Shannon Magrane: The Next Lauryn Hill?!?

Shannon Magrane is a tall, All-American girl. That was how she was portrayed on last night’s American Idol audition show, as Ryan Seacrest once again interviewed her World Series-hurling father and once again brought up a certain awkward incident from a few weeks ago. But can she sing? We think so. While the judges questioned Magrane’s song choice a bit, Randy Jackson delivered very high praise in saying Shannon possesses a “Lauryn Hill vibrato.” That reference may be lost on younger viewers, but trust us. It’s a big compliment. What did you think of Magrane’s performance? Shannon Magrane – “Go Light Your World”

Colton Dixon: American Idiot on American Idol?

It’s not hard to imagine Colton Dixon on Broadway, is it? This American Idol veteran – who tried out for both previous seasons and hadn’t even planned on giving it a third go until the judges convinced him during his sister’s opening audition this year – covered “Decode” on last night’s live audition show, leaping atop a piano to close the performance and looking like he belongs in “American Idiot” or “Rock of Ages.” That’s not a diss. Just an observation. Jennifer Lopez told Colton he sings “from the heart,” but she told that to pretty much every contestant last night. Watch Dixon’s performance now and decide how he compares to other season 11hopefuls such as Deandre Brackensick . Colton Dixon – “Decode”

Eben Franckewitz: A Mess on Adele

Oh, how we miss Simon Cowell. He would have torn into Eben Franckewitz last night. Not that we want to see a 15-year old cry on stage, but let’s be honest: this Justin Bieber lookalike is not ready for primetime, and certainly not ready to try his voice on an Adele single. But that’s exactly what Eben attempted, covering “Set Fire to Rain” and simply failing to hit any of the proper notes, while looking overwhelmed on such a grand stage. No, Randy Jackson, Franckewitz did not “collect himself like a pro,” which is understandable: he’s not a pro. He’s only 15. And he may have a bright future in the business, but he doesn’t on season 11 of American Idol . Eben Franckewitz – “Set Fire to Rain”

Jeremy Rosado on American Idol: Big Heart, Small Voice

Jeremy Rosado is a really nice guy. That’s what the American Idol judges were telling us over and over last night, with Randy Jackson pointing to the way Rosado comforted many hopefuls during opening auditions. That’s great and all – but it’s never a good sign, show wise, when the panel is talking more about your heart than your voice. Indeed, Jeremy didn’t really impress with his vocals on a cover of “Gravity.” It’s certainly hard to see him advancing over such solid performers as Phillip Phillips and even the theatrical Colton Dixon . But at least Rosado can return to his medical supply job in Florida with his head held high. Jeremy Rosado – “Gravity”

‘American Idol’ Judge Randy Jackson Has ‘Crazy Taste’

Fellow ‘Idol’ judge Jennifer Lopez dishes to MTV News about working alongside ‘most positive’ person. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Jennifer Lopez Photo: MTV News As season 11 of “American Idol” chugs along, it’s clear that Jennifer Lopez , Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler have found their footing and place with one another. The threesome is already into their second season as the show’s brain trust, and J.Lo is revealing just what makes sharing the judging panel with “Idol” vet Jackson so great. “He has all different kinds of sunglasses. There was one pair where I was like, ‘Those are too big … those are just too big!’ and he’s like, ‘I love these,’ ” she laughed to MTV News during a recent chat about the Fox reality singing competition. “The thing I love about Randy is he’s always so positive, even when he gives negative criticism on the show, ’cause he’s the hardest of all of us.” While Jackson is straight up when it comes to his feelings about the contestants’ talent — or lack thereof — it’s his cool “dawg” demeanor that makes his criticism a much easier pill to swallow. “He’ll straight-out tell you that was awful. We won’t say it,” she said, adding that she and Tyler don’t verbalize their feelings as straightforwardly. “Even though he’s that guy, he’s the most positive and the most great-energy person ever. He can laugh at himself so genuinely at the same time. He’s just an amazing person.” As amazing as his judging style is Jackson’s aforementioned sense of style, which reaches far beyond spectacles. “And he loves crazy sunglasses and I love them on him. Without the glasses, it’s not really Randy — that and the shoes. He has a crazy taste in those things, like a little bit out there,” she said. “Not mad at that.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
