The Mad Science of Fringe: Where Do Embryonic Shape-Shifters Come From?

Last night’s Fringe marked a huge reversal from the past two weeks’ filler episodes and gave us some real answers about shape-shifters and traveling between universes. In The Man from the Other Side, Thomas Newton opens a portal and gets someone he referred to as Mr. Secretary through to our universe. Peter, trying to stop Newton, realizes almost presciently that Walter kidnapped him out of the alt-world when he was young. And of course, angrily, he runs away. Now, I find it implausible that Peter could be angry at Walter for saving his life, but let’s take a look at the science of last night’s episode, shall we?

South Park Casualty Count: When Muhammad Met Blackface, Censorship and Mecha-Streisand

Last week, South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker celebrated their 200th episode by inviting back every celebrity ever ridiculed in the series’ 14 seasons — and by taking the Prophet Muhammad hostage in a bear costume. Needless to say, the gag did not go over well with radical Muslims , who “warned” Stone and Parker that they could face a Theo van Gogh-style assassination for depicting Muhammad in such an insulting light. Little did the radical Muslims know, the show’s anniversary episode was actually a two-parter that continued with last night’s episode, “201.”

Dancing with the Stars: Kiss Us Goodbye, Kate

Yep. Last night, America curtailed its instinct to prolong Kate Gosselin’s unending grief on Dancing with the Stars and rendered her an octogoner. Sad. I mean, not really. You know what was sad, though? A hateful trend that is developing in this competition — one that has nothing to do with Bruno Tonioli’s overstimulated aorta .

Previously on Lost : Your faithful recapper Mark Lisanti did an excellent job answering the questions left in each episode’s aftermath, but in this new sideways universe, I’ll be taking over those duties for one week (also, Desmond keeps trying to almost-kill me, and it’s getting to be a little much). In other news, Hurley faked a seance with Jacob to reunite most of the show’s principal cast members, Claire presented her stylist with a picture of Crystal Bowersox, and Locke got run over. What does it all mean? Let’s investigate in a round of Questions and Answers.

Report: Box-Office Betting is a Go

Wall Street’s proposal to launch a futures exchange based on box-office receipts may have haters in Hollywood , but regulators in Washington are said to support the idea and may even green-light it in time for gamblers investors to wager on Iron Man 2 . Buried in Wednesday’s report is this winning quote from Lionsgate boss (and Hollywood Stock Exchange co-founder) Michael Burns: “If the studios have a chance to have an equity position in the actual exchange, if Cantor offers that, I think that’s a giant win-win. I think it will ultimately become a terrific hedging vehicle for the studios. You can buy corn futures, orange juice futures, it makes no sense you can’t buy movie futures.” In other words: Flop insurance, here we come ! [ Bloomberg ]
