Frontman Chris Martin tells the BBC that fifth album is ‘thinly veiled account of what happens within the group.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Coldplay Photo: Eamonn McCormack/ WireImage Coldplay may just bust apart their image as sensitive, hipster-dad rock gods with their fifth LP. Frontman Chris Martin recently told BBC’s Radio 1 that the platinum-selling collective’s follow-up to the 2008 smash Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends is inspired by the band’s brushes with personal vices and industry drama. The singer and pianist said the record’s content touches on “love, addiction, OCD, escape and working for someone you don’t like.” Martin also described the project as a “thinly veiled account of what happens within the group.” However, Coldplay fans needn’t fret that the upcoming untitled effort — which Martin denied is a concept album as he previously asserted — is an express ticket to Bummerville. The “Clocks” crooner maintained the album “also has a lot of uplifting stuff. It’s supposed to be about life, the good stuff and the bad stuff. Everything.” The band’s drummer Will Champion backed up Martin’s description, aptly using a marital anecdote to explain the emotional complexity of the record. “There’s a phrase which my wife told me from a book, I can’t remember which book, but a man is asked, ‘Are you married?’ And he says, ‘Yes, of course I’m married. I have a wife, kids, the whole catastrophe,’ ” he said.”Catastrophe just means something big and seismic but not necessarily bad. It’s all about embracing the whole thing. Appreciating the good and bad and realising it’s all part of life.” The group are once again teaming up Markus Dravs and Roxy Music legend Brian Eno, who produced Viva, for the project. The album currently has no release date. Are you looking forward to Coldplay’s new album? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Coldplay

Did you think Avatar was going to settle for being the highest grossing movie of all time and then just fade away quietly? No way! This record-breaking juggernaut is also the most pirated film of 2010. On one hand, this makes no sense at all since Avatar seemed like the last film you would want to download, given that its visual, 3-D experience was the main selling point. On the other hand, I guess the hype behind any movie making that much money is hard to ignore, even for internet pirates. In any case, while 20th Century Fox is probably okay with this distinction since the film already killed it at the box office, a few other films on the top ten list probably aren’t so happy.

‘Some beats you hear … and they hit you in a certain kind of way,’ the Young Money upstart tells MTV News. By Hillary Crosley, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway and Cory Gunz Photo: MTV News On Tuesday, Lil Wayne released his first post-prison song, “6’7″,” a cut that features Bronx MC Cory Gunz . The son of rapper Peter Gunz, of “Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)” fame, spoke to MTV News about the strength of producer Bangladesh’s infectious “6’7″ ” beat . “We went straight to the studio and Tunes [told me,] ‘I have something for you to hear,’ and it went from there,” Cory recalled. “[Wayne said], ‘We gon’ have to attack this.’ As soon as I heard it, it was like instant. Some beats you hear [or] certain songs you hear in a party … and they hit you in a certain kind of way and that’s kinda what the beat did. So we sat and the record is now getting an amazing response. People been messing with the record, so it’s dope. I’m happy to be here.” As a Young Money artist, Gunz also said the label heads allow him creative freedom. “Honestly, [Wayne] just told me to be me on the record,” Gunz said. “He didn’t tell me any specific way to write or anything to do, and that’s what I really appreciate. Mack Maine and Slim, they don’t never try to, like, make me do anything that would compromise how I feel about it,” he added about the YM president and Cash Money boss. “They always tell me to be ‘100’ with it and that’s what me and Wayne did — we bodied the record. As for whether fans will be able to catch all of Wayne and Cory’s metaphors at first listen, the MC said fans should take their time. Related Artists Cory Gunz Lil Wayne

‘I just really wanted to make a video that captures line by line what it is I’m talking about on the record,’ soul singer tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Raheem DeVaughn Photo: Ray Tamarra/ Getty Images While many of the 2011 Grammy nominees were celebrating their nods, soul singer Raheem DeVaughn was stirring up Web controversy. The Washington, D.C., crooner dropped the visual for his Jackin’ 4 Beats mixtape cut “She’s Single” a day before the Recording Academy recognized his third album, “The Love & War MasterPeace,” with a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album. DeVaughn also said he dropped the joint a day before World AIDS Day and featured a plug for Magnum condoms to bring attention to the issue of sex. However, for many, the accolade and the activism were eclipsed by the sexed-up clip, which features DeVaughn engaging in some acrobatic bedroom moves with a lady friend. When MTV News caught up with the singer via phone recently, he explained that the video, which became a trending topic on Twitter, wasn’t crafted to be overly racy, but rather reflects DeVaughn’s creative space at the moment. “I’ve shown my soul in so many other different lights. I’m in a real sexy mode right now, grown-man sexy,” he said. “That’s really just what I wanted to capture. I wanted to really make a video that captures line by line what it is I’m talking about on the record.” In order to embody the baby-making vibe of the song, the video must feature imagery that rivals lyrics like, “I’ll let you ride it like Ferrari,” and “I hit it, hit it, hit it like a hockey stick.” And the “Customer” singer did not hold back with the accompanying visual, packing the clip with crimson-lit scenes of DeVaughn consorting in the nude with a woman who’s stepping out on her man. However, DeVaughn doesn’t consider the video a raunch-fest, but rather an honest portrait of what goes down between consenting adults who want to indulge privately in a steamy romp. “I wouldn’t necessarily call it raunchy,” he said.” I think it’s more tasteful. If that’s the word cats choose to run with it, I’ve seen a lot more raunchy stuff than that. It ain’t like I’m poppin’ off with the m
Aaliyah, Tupac Shakur, Elvis Presley and more late superstars have popped up in videos after their deaths. By James Montgomery Michael Jackson in the video for “Hold My Hand” Photo: Sony Music Entertainment On Thursday (December 9), the late, great Michael Jackson returned to the music-video world with “Hold My Hand,” a clip from the upcoming Michael album , which pairs his vocals with production work from some of today’s top producers. And much like that album, the “Hold My Hand” video is very much a retrospective affair, loaded with triumphant MJ performance footage and uplifting imagery (smiling children, sunrises, bright blue skies), not to mention a whole lot of Akon. And while fans can debate whether the clip is a worthy addition to the King of Pop’s massive music-video legacy, it certainly carries on the tradition of the posthumous video, a rather ignominious — and incredibly profitable — wing of the music-industry machine. Yes, ever since Elvis Presley shuffled off this mortal coil, record labels have been churning out videos by deceased stars, for reasons that run the gamut from tribute to pure profit. Out of necessity (since the star is no longer with us), these videos are usually by-the-numbers affairs, full of stock footage and performance clips, the occasional use of animation and, of course, the odd celebrity cameo. More often than not, fans love them — which is why we keep seeing them. And since “Hold My Hand” has just been unveiled, we decided to take a look back at some of the most notable examples of stars who may no longer be with us, but continue to make music videos. Here’s our Posthumous Playlist. Aaliyah She died tragically in a 2001 plane crash , but her videos kept showing up on MTV. “I Care 4 U” was a collection of clips from the Japanese anime “Macross Pluss II,” which feature her as a ghostly figure. “Miss You” was a tribute vid, starting with a heartfelt monologue by DMX and featuring cameos by the likes of Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim and Toni Braxton. “Don’t Know What to Tell Ya” is a combination of footage from her old videos and newly animated bits, which reimagine Aaliyah as a superhero in a skintight getup. Elvis Presley He died in 1977 but found chart success once again in 2002, when a remixed version of his song “A Little Less Conversation” was featured in a Nike World Cup commercial. A video, featuring performance footage of the King playing on a TV monitor (and a bunch of hyperactive dancers and models re-enacting his famous “Jailhouse Rock” video) was quickly assembled to capitalize. It was appropriately massive. John Lennon Murdered outside his New York City home in 1980, Lennon’s (then) just-released Double Fantasy quickly rose to #1 on the album charts and even won the Grammy for Album of the Year. The follow-up, Milk and Honey, was also a hit and featured the single “Nobody Told Me,” which came with a posthumous video, complete with photos of Lennon as a child, his iconic wire-frame specs and even some of his illustrations. Nirvana After the death of Kurt Cobain, there was no shortage of Nirvana sundry released, though the video for “You Know You’re Right” — one of the last songs he recorded with the band — is the true standout, full of performance clips and backstage footage that capture the grunge icon at his most powerful, moody and, strangely enough, happy. The Notorious B.I.G. He was killed in 1997, but his talent — and the prodigious amount of pre-recorded material he left behind — survives to this day. There truly is no shortage of posthumous Biggie videos, though the most notable are probably the flossy, glossy “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems,” Spike Jonze’s riotous “Sky’s the Limit” (which stars nothing but children) and “Notorious Thugz,” a team up with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony that features his ghost rapping inside a studio. Sublime Frontman Bradley Nowell died just before the release of the trio’s breakout self-titled album, and so — mostly out of necessity — Nowell (and his beloved dog, Lou) continued to turn up in the band’s videos, including “What I Got,” “Santeria” and “Wrong Way.” TLC Just before the release of their 2002 album 3D, founding member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was killed in a car accident in Honduras. The group’s two remaining members pressed on, releasing a series of videos that paid tribute to their late friend. In the video for “Girl Talk,” they wear outfits emblazoned with her name, and she shows up in animated form too. “Turntable” is a more traditional posthumous clip, made up of performance footage of the trio taken from their live shows and videos. Tupac Shakur Unlike most late stars, Tupac left behind so much material that he never really left. The vaults were mined for more than a decade following his 1996 death, to the point where some believe he may actually still be with us. Not surprisingly, there are no shortage of posthumous music videos out there, including “I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto,” which picks up after he was shot (and was filmed from his “point of view”); “Changes,” a solemn tribute clip made up of news footage, scenes from his videos and movies and still photos; and “Until the End of Time,” a more sparse affair, featuring clips of him onstage and in the studio. What is your favorite posthumous clip? Let us know in the comments. Related Videos Posthumous Music Videos Related Artists Michael Jackson Tupac TLC Sublime Notorious B.I.G. ‘Who else has a significant story to tell of triumph from tragedy?’ MC muses in exclusive ‘RapFix Live’ interview from prison. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway T.I. Photo: MTV News T.I. has taken a few detours from his road to redemption, but he’s not the only one who has stumbled in the spotlight. The imprisoned MC remembered this fact when deciding who would be right for his record “Get Back Up” — a sentiment that ultimately led him to controversial crooner Chris Brown. Tip broke down the origin of the collabo during an exclusive “RapFix Live” interview from prison Thursday (December 9). “We were thinking, ‘Who else could we get to be on this record … of such importance? Who else has a significant story to tell of triumph from tragedy?’ ” he recalled. “I was like, ‘Chris. Let’s see if Chris can do it.’ I reached out to Chris, and he did it.” The ATL MC said the reaction to the track was strong from the beginning, with many listeners feeling an instant connection to the record. “Immediately, as soon as we heard it, everybody who heard it first listen is like, ‘That’s something special,’ ” he described. “It’s not nothing that you hear every day on radio; it’s not your average, typical T.I. record. It’s a message, and it’s two guys who have been through something, who have had the world turn their backs on them.” T.I. maintained the track gave the embattled stars a chance to say exactly what they wanted, exactly how they wanted to say it. The fans only job is to listen up. “You get to listen without interruption. You can’t interrupt me now,” he explained. “There’s no way for you to interject. There’s no way for you to misinterpret what I’m saying. You got to sit, and you got to listen. “Just like when you write your articles, just like when you sit at your computer, you blog, I got to sit, and I got to read. So now, it’s your turn. This is what we got to say.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With David Banner, 9th Wonder Related Artists T.I. Chris Brown
