Sen. Harkin: If Obama Caves On Taxes, He Better Pray For Palin In 2012

WASHINGTON — The sense of frustration among Senate Democrats over the White House's handling of the tax cut debate has grown throughout the week, culminating in a series of articles on Thursday anticipating some form of presidential capitulation. Whether the mood is genuine or deliberate — or, perhaps, a bit of both — is worth some honest debate. Aides acknowledged that they were airing concerns about a forthcoming tax cut deal, in part, for the purpose of stiffening the White House's spine during the remaining negotiations. None would take the step of going on the record with their remarks. But others were even blunter when they went completely off the record. When leaving a Senate Democratic caucus meeting late Thursday night, most members declined to answer questions about the White House's role in the tax cut negotiations. But the few who did talk didn't exactly hide their sadness over the state of affairs. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), for one, slyly acknowledged that he'd get himself in trouble if he answered whether or not he was happy with the administration's engagement. “You want me to be the [troublemaker]?… I'm too junior around here to do that,” said the 86-year-old, five-term senator. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) did a little less dancing. “I just think, if [Obama] caves on this, then I think that he's gonna have a lot of swimming upstream [to do],” said the Iowa Democrat, a unabashed progressive who has been less reticent than most in criticizing the White House. “He campaigned on [allowing the rates for the rich to expire], was very strong on that, and sometimes there are things that are just worth fighting for.” And if he decided to compromise away from that, a reporter asked the senator. “He would then just be hoping and praying that Sarah Palin gets the nomination,” Harkin replied, insinuating that there would be few other Republicans that Obama could assuredly beat in 2012. added by: TimALoftis

Eminem Producer Alex Da Kid Is ‘Confident’ In His Grammy Chances

Two of his songs — Em’s ‘Love the Way You Lie’ and B.o.B’s ‘Airplanes’ — are facing off for Record of the Year. By Steven Roberts Alex Da Kid Photo: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images Producer Alex Da Kid has had quite the year, collaborating with Eminem and Rihanna on the chart-topping “Love the Way You Lie” as well as B.o.B and Hayley Williams on the equally anthemic “Airplanes.” Now that the 2011 Grammy nominations have been announced, Alex has racked up a few nods, and his two biggest hits will even duke it out for Record of the Year. MTV News caught up with Alex via phone Thursday (December 2), and he said he was extremely excited about the recognition but wasn’t surprised: He knew these songs would put him on the map from day one. “I remember sitting in the studio with Em and being like, ‘I’m writing my Grammy speech right now,’ ” Alex recalled. “He hates all that stuff, and he hates it when I say stuff like that, but I really believed in it from the start.” Alex’s first major song was B.o.B’s “Airplanes,” which he said paved the way for his second Grammy-nominated song, “Love the Way You Lie.” Eminem — who received 10 nominations himself — is featured on “Airplanes Pt. II,” and Alex said their relationship grew from there. The rookie producer faces stiff competition in the Record of the Year category — where he faces off against Cee Lo’s “F— You,” Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” — but Alex remains confident about his chances. “I mean, I think they’re pretty good,” he told MTV News of his pair of tracks. “I’m a confident person, and they’re my favorite songs out of the category we’re in, but you never know.” Do you think Alex has a good shot come Grammy night? Ke$ha’s Cannibal: A Cheat Sheet

Singer has already scored a hit with new single ‘We R Who We R.’ By Gil Kaufman Ke$ha Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ Getty Images It’s been a pretty phenomenal year for Ke$ha. The brash, glitter-loving club kid burst onto the scene in January with her debut album, Animal, hot on the heels of the smash debut single “Tik Tok.” In short order, she ended the chart run of Susan Boyle when Animal debuted at #1 , made her first trip to the Grammy Awards , teamed up with pals 3OH!3 for another hit video with “Blah Blah Blah,” dropped in on “American Idol” and hit the road with Rihanna . And that’s just the first three months of the year! But after scoring another hit with “Your Love Is My Drug” and flipping the bird to haters over their critiques of her wobbly debut on “Saturday Night Live,” Ke$ha unleashed another single, “Take It Off.” For a minute, there was talk of a follow-up album that might have a country twang , not out of the question considering that she’s a Nashville native and her mom penned songs for Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash. But as she said at the time, “I’m also really digging being called, like, half-jokingly, a white-girl rapper. I think it’s really funny, and I’m going to ride that train for a little bit.” By August, she was already plotting her next move, telling MTV News , “I’m always writing and kind of thinking of the next step. I’m still executing this record properly onstage, but the next record is definitely on my mind, and potentially in the works soon.” She described waking up in Tokyo at 4 in the morning with a brainstorm for a new song and then spending seven hours making a “horrible” beat on “Garage Band” and singing and rapping into her computer. A short time later, it was announced that her nine-song follow-up, Cannibal, would hit stores November 22 as a “companion” album to a reissue of Animal. The disc was reported to contain eight new songs produced by heavy-hitters like Max Martin, Benny Blanco and Bangladesh and to be preceded by “We R Who We R.” “This year has been carnivorous and life-changing. I have my rowdy, gorgeous fans to thank for taking me on the ride of a lifetime,” Ke$ha said in a statement. “My only goal with this record is to keep them dancing. The songs on Cannibal were made to inspire people to ignore any hate or judgment and be themselves unapologetically. It’s the perfect companion to Animal and I hope you guys like it. And if you don’t like it — bite me.” Though a rumored hookup with Drake was false, a confirmed track list proved to have plenty of profane and silly titles, including (ahem) “C U Next Tuesday,” “Sleazy,” “Blow,” “The Harold Song,” “Cannibal,” “We R,” “Crazy Beautiful Life” and “Grow a Pear,” plus a remix of “Animal.” After winning an MTV EMA for Best New Act , the singer also locked in her first headlining affair, the Get $leazy Tour , which is slated to kick off February 15 in Portland, Oregon. Like most major new albums, Cannibal leaked online a week before it hit shelves, perhaps the finest proof yet that Ke$ha has truly hit the big time. Only this time, after most of the songs had hit the Web, Ke$ha just posted the damn thing herself on her website and told her fans to enjoy. “This is my album premiere, and it’s top secret, and it’s really fun and it’s wild,” Ke$ha said in a message posted on her site. “Things are going to get crazy and a little awkward, it’ll be okay. Listen to it.” She’s going to have plenty of major competition on the charts this week with new releases from Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and My Chemical Romance , but something tells us Ke$ha isn’t that worried. Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

Justin Bieber, Lil Twist Will Leak Mixtape Track ‘Real Soon’

Young Money MC says his project with Bieber may even become an EP. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith Lil Twist Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber has already received the seal of approval of Kanye West , Ludacris and Drake . And he impressed many with a video in which he raps over Vado and Cam’ron’s “Speaking in Tungs” last month. Now Bieber is taking the next step to proving his crossover potential: working on a mixtape with of Young Money rapper and fellow teen Lil Twist . “Me and Justin are working on this mixtape,” Twist confirmed to MTV News. “We probably gonna title it Best of Both Worlds, [or] Best of Young Rap, Best of Young Pop. We got a few records done. The recent record that was talked about was ‘Billionaire.’ We did ‘Billionaire’ by Travie McCoy and Bruno Mars. We gonna get ready to leak that out. We’re gonna leak something real soon.” Any further details about when more music from the twosome might drop is still very TBD. “I don’t have the date on the mixtape yet, because we’re still working hard on it,” the MC explained. “We’re trying to get new beats, because now, like, some of the beats [that we’ve used] are old. … So we’re gonna get new beats and go back in and try and make an EP.” The idea of the two working on some music together was really an idea Bieber came up with, Twist explained. “Me and Justin, we actually met through a mutual friend and after that we got real cool actually,” he recalled. “[We] started working in the studio, sending stuff through the Mac book and everything. And then he was like, ‘Yo, bro, we should do a mixtape. Let’s go.’ We just started then.” Related Artists Lil Twist Justin Bieber

La Roux Singer Can’t Hear Her Voice On Kanye West’s ‘All Of The Lights’

‘It’s not the kind of thing where you can pick it out … but apparently it’s there!’ Elly Jackson laughs to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena La Roux’s Elly Jackson Photo: MTV News If you listen closely, you just might hear La Roux’s leading lady, Elly Jackson, on Kanye West’s massive My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy track “All of the Lights.” And if you do hear her voice on there, you might want to give her a call because, frankly, she can’t hear it herself. “I came to New York, and I did a couple of days in the studio with him,” she told MTV News. “He got me to layer up all these vocals with other people, and he just basically wanted to use his favorite vocalists from around the world to create this really unique vocal texture on his record, but it’s not the kind of thing where you can pick it out. I don’t have a verse or anything. I can’t actually hear my voice on it,” she laughed. “But apparently it’s there!” There are quite a few artists on the track — including Rihanna, Alicia Keys, John Legend, The-Dream, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Elton John (on piano), Ryan Leslie, Charlie Wilson and Tony Williams — and Jackson made sure to get a little something out of Kanye for her vocal duties. “He had been kind of trying to get in touch with us over three months, I think over the summer. And well, obviously, we’d got his calls and stuff, but it was a bit difficult to get our schedules to meet up, so it just took awhile for us to do anything,” she recalled. “And then he said, ‘I’d really love you to sing.’ He was like, ‘Straight up, I want you to sing on the record.’ “And I was like, ‘Well, we’d love for you to do a remix to ‘In for the Kill.’ It’s great. It gets us on different radio and it gets us to a different audience, which is a great thing for any artist,” she said, describing it as a “scratching-each-other’s-back type of situation, which was really nice.” Can you hear Elly on “All of the Lights”? Kanye West Pushed For ‘More Douche Bag’ On ‘Runaway,’ Pusha T Recalls

Clipse MC breaks down the making of the Yeezy track on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Pusha T Photo: Sohyung Kang/MTV News Sometimes, there is a certain element that can take a song to another level, and according to Pusha T, Kanye West had a very specific idea about the secret ingredient needed to make “Runaway” a memorable track. The G.O.O.D. Music MC recently revealed to MTV News that ‘Ye was adamant about packing as many “douche bags” into their collaboration as possible. “I’m writing a verse, and I come back to the table, and it’s something that I’m feeling, and he’s like, ‘Naw, but I need more douche bag.’ And I’m like, ‘All right, man, c’mon.’ So I go back, and he’s like, ‘Naw, more douche bag!’ He’s screaming at me ‘more douche bag’ at this point,” Push said during his “RapFix Live” interview Thursday (November 18) about crafting the douche-bag-toasting standout from ‘Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. “I just really had to, like, take myself out of it a little bit and then put … the perspective of the guy … who thinks he can fix it, but he’s not being preventative.” Push said the song developed organically but that Yeezy had unexpectedly stumbled upon a subject the Clipse MC was very familiar with: the art of douche-baggery. “It starts from a conversation. We’re talking, and he’s like, ‘I like your perspective on that. Put a verse to that.’ What he didn’t know was [that] I was going through my own relationship turmoil at the time,” Push revealed. “I was being a douche bag,” he said, adding, vaguely, that he was doing “whatever wrong you can do” in a relationship. Although the concept arose naturally enough, Push said ‘Ye was relentless about making the final product just right. “I’ve never worked with anybody like him,” Push said. “He just pushes you and pushes you and pushes you. With ‘Runaway,’ I think I wrote that four times.” While Yeezy lab sessions had their moments of intensity, Push said developing a partnership with the G.O.O.D. Music impresario easily grew out of an excursion to West’s tropical outpost. “It started from a three-day trip to Hawaii,” he said of becoming a part of the G.O.O.D. Music fold. “It was supposed to be a three-day trip, [and] it ended up being a month, just collaborating on his album. The ‘Runaway’ song was done, a couple of the G.O.O.D. Friday joints were done. ‘So Appalled’ was done. It was just a vibe thing. We got in there, and we just started vibing.” Push said Yeezy was also confident that joining forces with the Virginia spitter would be a partnership with the potential to shut down the game — or at least the 2010 MTV VMA stage , where the pair premiered the record. “He was just [like], ‘You know we about to kill this, right? It’s about to be a real problem. This is gonna be, like, one of the biggest moments right now,’ ” Push remembered. “He was like, ‘C’mon, the record’s crazy, I’m debuting it here. When people see us together, we about to shock. We about to hurt some people.’ ” What do you think a recording session with Kanye West would be like? Let us know in the comments!
