Taylor Swift’s Speak Now Is ‘Amazing,’ Selena Gomez Says

‘She took her style and made it bigger. It’s going to be really good,’ singer says of her pal’s upcoming album. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News On Tuesday, Selena Gomez will release her new album, A Year Without Rain . Fans already love its singles “Round & Round” and the title track, and now Gomez has the ultimate seal of approval on the album from her pal and fellow superstar Taylor Swift . “It was so funny, I got to see her and we played each other both of our records, and I was so excited,” Gomez told MTV News. “I’m so excited for her record ’cause it’s amazing. But then she heard mine and it’s so funny ’cause she’s very passionate and she’s very dramatic — which I think is why we’re friends because we’re both dramatic — but she has her favorites already.” So, what are the Swift-approved tracks? “She likes ‘Rock God and ‘Ghost of You’ a lot,” Gomez said. “But she definitely danced and had her little thing. She’s completely honest with me, so it was nice to have her feedback.” Gomez is just as stoked for Swift’s October release of her highly anticipated Speak Now album. “My favorite songs from her record would be ‘Dear John’ and another one … it’s number 13 on the record ’cause that’s her favorite number … it’s really sweet,” she teased. “There’s two that I’m absolutely in love with.” With fans already getting a taste of Swift’s new album thanks to “Mine” and the VMA-premiered track “Innocent” hitting the airwaves, Gomez thinks they’ll really love what they hear. “Her album is going to be awesome. I think people are gonna be really surprised. It’s not different [but] you just don’t really believe she could top it, in a way,” she explained. “She took her style and made it bigger. It’s going to be really good.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Selena Gomez

Kanye West Dis By Cam’ron, Jim Jones Doesn’t Surprise Juelz Santana

Diplomats’ third member says he knew nothing of ‘Toast’ track before it was posted online. By Jayson Rodriguez Cam’ron Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage It would be a stretch to say that everyone is suddenly on Kanye West’s side following his 2010 MTV Video Music Awards performance . Former Roc-a-Fella labelmates Cam’ron and Jim Jones responded to West’s new track “Runaway” with a recording that takes shots at the Chicago superstar and Jay-Z. “And Kanye, you a sucka n—a, dissed Dame so my attitude is f— the n—a,” Cam spits on “Toast,” which was posted on Missinfo.tv on Wednesday. “F— with Jigga, how you gonna live with that/ Took the beat, now come get it back.” “You might take it the wrong way, that’s what people do,” Jones said. They gonna think we starting trouble, but we just viewing our opinions.” On Thursday, the other member of the recently reunited Diplomats , Juelz Santana, called in to Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex and said he knew nothing about the track before it arrived. “To be honest, I just heard the record like a fan, like everybody else,” Juelz told Flex. “I didn’t even know they did the record. Me and Cam and Jim, we been speaking, but they must have did that when they were just together in the studio. That’s what they do. I heard the record, I was on the Internet and thought, Wow. It shouldn’t surprise people. Especially [with] Cam, he’s always said how he felt about Jay-Z or Kanye. He’s never been a person that’s bitten his tongue.” In the past, Cam’ron and Jay-Z have traded barbs on wax. Cam appeared on J.R. Writer’s “Bird Call,” which featured former Roc-a-Fella co-CEO Dame Dash in the video. The pair have had differences since the Roc days when Dash attempted to appoint the Harlem MC into a VP position with the label, something that the Brooklyn lyricist disagreed with. (Dash also wanted to promote Beanie Sigel to VP, the idea being that both rappers, Beanie and Cam’ron, would oversee releases from their respective crews, State Property and Dipset.) Cam’ron has also taken umbrage at Kanye’s choosing Jay-Z over Dame Dash in the Roc split, since brash businessman Dash is the one who first took an interest in West as an artist. MTV News’ requests for comments by the parties involved were not returned as of press time. What do you think of Cam’ron and Jim Jones’ Kanye dis track? Sound off in the comments. Who is Roger Craig? The Newest Jeopardy! Single-Day Record Holder

Move over, freakishly consistent Ken Jennings. On Jeopardy! last night, mild-mannered Roger Craig toppled Jennings’ single-day earnings record of $75,000 with $77,000 in winnings. What, what! The 33-year-old graduate student locked down the record when he knew “the inspiration for this title object in a novel and a 1957 movie actually spanned the Mae Khlung River,” was The Bridge on the River Kwai . Of course the two-day champion still has 72 more days to go before besting Jennings’ overall winning streak, but fingers crossed! After the jump watch his completely benign celebration.

Rick Ross Buries Twitter Feud With ‘Fire’ Slim Thug Collabos

‘I leaked ‘Paid the Cost,’ just to show the haters,’ Ross tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Rick Ross says he didn’t fire shots. It was just a rap reference that he had no intention of putting out anyway. A couple of weeks ago, a track leaked to the mixtape circuit and the Internet labeled “King Boss.” Mr. Rozay rapped on the song, “She dated Slim Thug, but now she f— with me/ She finally made it to the biggest boss luckily.” Slim Thugger quickly took to his Twitter page with a question — and a retort. “WTF @rickyrozay is that a diss?” Slim wrote. “Just threw @rickyrozay cd out the roof of the coupe haters get no play in my ride.” Well, before things got too far out of hand, Ross and Thugger talked , hammered out the misunderstanding and actually banged out a couple of new, official songs. One of them, “Paid the Cost,” is out now. “First of all, I wanna salute the homie, Slim Thugga,” Ross said on Saturday in Los Angeles during the MTV VMA Radio Forum. “Maybe two weeks ago, a record had surfaced that I recorded before I even met Slim Thug. Just not knowing the dude and made the record and, after the fact, maybe four or five years later, the record leaked. He responded in a way that was totally understandable. What was funny about that situation is that Slim Thug is actually an artist that after I met him, embraced me and showed me the most love. The homie, Slim Thug, and I gotta salute the homie, Trae Tha Truth.” Ross said that Slim and Trae always roll out the red carpet for him when he goes to H-Town. “For a record to surface and me being a little slow on Twitter, I didn’t really peep it until two days later,” Ross continued. “When I found out about it and heard about it, they said I’m dissing Slim Thug. ‘What’s the name of the record? “King Boss”?’ he remembered asking. “I never had a record called ‘King Boss.’ I just left it alone. After the fact, [Slim] asked me about it. I told the homie, ‘Of course it ain’t nothing but love between me and you, big dawg.’ We got in the studio, later that night. The night we spoke. I emailed him something; shot him something, did something for his album. It’s fire. Then I leaked ‘Paid the Cost,’ just to show the haters.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop) Slim Thug

Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns Leaves The Past Behind

‘The concepts blend human ideas with technology,’ Mike Shinoda says of new album. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington Photo: MTV News Linkin Park ‘s new A Thousand Suns album is a lot of things, most of which have nothing to do with their previous (mega-selling) efforts. By their own admission, the band spent nearly two years attempting to leave their past behind. To that end, it’s not a stretch to say they succeeded. The album, which hit stores Tuesday (September 14), is the band’s most divisive. But there’s one thing seemingly everyone can agree on: From this point forward, Linkin Park will never be the same band again. And though Suns represents the band at a crossroads, that doesn’t mean they abandoned everything that got them to this point. Quite the opposite, in fact. They’ve just taken the old and reworked it through the prism of the new.

Drake Brings Out Mary J. Blige, Swizz Beatz For VMA Performance

The heavyweights performed sophisticated rendition of Thank Me Later track ‘Fancy.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Mary J. Blige and Drake perform during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty If we have learned anything at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , it’s that Drake really knows how to spiff up a joint. Mining the same midcentury swagger the Toronto MC worked in his VMA promo, Drizzy side-stepped the outrageous antics the big show is known for in favor of a sophisticated rendition of his Thank Me Later track “Fancy.” Following an introduction by stars of the movie “The Social Network” — including Justin Timberlake, who dubbed Drake the “most exciting artist in music” — the set opened with Mary J. Blige channeling her “I’m Going Down” video in an all-black suit and fedora, as a similarly dressed Swizz Beatz manned a grand piano. Then Drizzy descended an illuminated staircase in a white dinner jacket below a sign that read “Drake” in bold lights. He began to spit, and the MC didn’t let the grown-man look slow him down, rattling off the lyrics with energetic abandon. Mary then broke it down, belting out rhymes about ladies with “their nails done, hair done, everything did” with an effortless power that reminded the audience why she’s the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. During rehearsals, Drizzy dished that the performance was inspired by the midcentury cool of the Rat Pack, an iconic crew of entertainers that included stars like Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra. “I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room,” Drake, who was nominated for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video awards , told MTV News. “It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn’t, ‘Let’s just rap and be epic and be huge.’ They were like, ‘I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.’ I wanted to get up there and look fly.” It’s fitting that Drizzy was joined by Mary J. and Swizz for his VMA performance, as “Fancy,” which was crafted by the superproducer, was originally slated to be a joint for the Queen. But Drake knows a hit when he hears it. “He was like, ‘That’s the record I need,’ ” Swizz told MTV News about Drake’s reaction upon first hearing the song. Swizzy initially offered to re-create the song’s feel on a different track. “I said, ‘OK, I’ll make you that.’ ” Apparently Drizzy wasn’t having it and insisted on the actual “Fancy” song, not a replacement. “No. That’s the record I need,” Drake said. Katy Perry Plans ‘Larger Than Life’ Teenage Dream Videos

Pop star wants tour around the album to be a ‘massive production.’ By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Capitol Katy Perry soared to the top of the charts with her just-released second album, Teenage Dream, but don’t expect the pop star to sit around and count her dough now that she’s avoided the sophomore slump . She has big plans for the album, including a tour and “larger than life” music videos to follow in the footsteps of the clips for “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream.” “I guess I’m looking forward to making music videos on this new album … and I’m really excited about incorporating the look and the idea of some of the songs on tour and making a massive production of it,” she said. “I’m gonna want a lot of visuals. I want it to be 10 times better than when I was on tour last.” She said this album shows her growth as an artist since releasing her debut One of the Boys, and she hopes to capture that visually. “This record is more important, as important, if not more important than the first record,” she said. “This one will really show if it was all by chance that the first one happened, which I strongly don’t believe. But I think I have to work just as hard and show people that there is a visual element. There’s a story to the songs. … I’m really excited about going on tour again and giving out those hugs and not handshakes and making those music videos that are going to be larger than life.” Calling the album a “perfect snapshot” of her life now, she said she has one major goal for it: “My ultimate goal is just to make people feel with music. I think that’s really important, the power of music, and hopefully people can hear that displayed in this record, but like I said, it’s not like anything I’m not. … It definitely has a little bit more spice to it.” Perry tweeted her excitement about the record’s success, thanking fans for helping it reach the top of the charts. “Before I purr off to dreamland I want to say THANK YOU! Thank you so much for my FIRST #1 RECORD DEBUT! I couldn’t have done it without YOU,” she wrote. “YAY CUPCAKES FOR EVERYONEEEEEEEEEE! #1TEENAGEDREAMDEBUT!” Are you excited for more videos from Teenage Dream ? Let us know in the comments! Kid Rock’s Born Free Due November 16

New album will contain collaborations with T.I., Sheryl Crow and Zac Brown. By Gil Kaufman Kid Rock Photo: JulNeil Lupin/ Redferns There’s no way you’re going to be able to confuse Kid Rock ‘s upcoming album Born Free with twitch-pop bomb-thrower M.I.A.’s song of the same name . First of all, Rock’s eighth studio album, due November 16, was produced by legendary knobmeister Rick Rubin. Second, even though Rock, like M.I.A., will release a song called “Born Free” as his first single, the Detroit bad boy’s tune focuses not on world affairs, but on the economic decline of his hometown, Detroit. A press release announcing the album calls Born Free “transformational,” going on to note that while Rock retains his “edge, wit, and swagger” on the record, he has left his rap-metal roots behind. “There isn’t even a parental warning sticker,” the release says. Rock described how D-town inspired the Americana feel of some tracks. “The catalyst for this record was Detroit, and my thoughts on the world through the lens of Detroit,” he said. “Watching everything go downhill over the past few years, the economy, the loss of jobs everywhere, I wanted to make a record that reflected the times but that still had soul.” Most of the album was recorded during a two-week session in Los Angeles with a band that included Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Los Lobos guitarist/singer David Hidalgo and Chavez guitarist Matt Sweeney. The release also noted that Rock logged time in studios in Detroit, Nashville and Atlanta to lay down collaborations with fellow hometown rock icon Bob Seger, former flame Sheryl Crow, Zac Brown and Trace Adkins. T.I. and Martina McBride will appear on a song called “Care.” The disc is the follow-up to 2007’s slow-burn success Rock N Roll Jesus , which produced the Lynyrd Skynyrd-inspired 2008 hit “All Summer Long.” Rock provided a preview of the album earlier this month when he performed six of its songs during a series of hometown shows. In addition to the Detroit-boosting anthem “Times Like These,” he pulled the cover back on the Springsteen-like title track, the midtempo “Slow My Roll,” the somber “Rock On,” the 1970s-style rocker “Feels Good to Me” and the Rolling Stones-influenced “God Bless Saturday.” Related Artists Kid Rock

Are Weezer Planning A Pinkerton Tour?

Bassist Brian Bell expresses interest in touring around the 1996 album’s reissue. By James Montgomery Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images From the sound of things, it’s looking like it might be 1996 all over again for Weezer (minus Matt Sharp, more than likely). Because they’re planning to launch a tour in support of the reissue of Pinkerton, their willfully difficult sophomore album that sputtered out of the gate but has since gone on to be regarded as a classic and a touchstone of so-called “second wave” emo. That’s according to Weezer guitarist Brian Bell, who gave an interview this past weekend at the Mile High Music Festival in Colorado, saying the band were kicking around the idea of doing a tour where they’ll play Pinkerton in its entirety. “We … have a reissue of Pinkerton coming out with new packaging,” he said. “And, I’m praying, a Pinkerton tour, where we’ll play all the songs on [the album] soon.” That’s good news for fans of Weezer’s classic lineup — Rivers Cuomo, Bell, Patrick Wilson and bassist Sharp, who left the group in 1998 and has since released solo albums and music with the Rentals — though, at the moment, the idea of doing a Pinkerton tour might just be that: an idea. When contacted by MTV News, a spokesperson for Weezer had no comment about Bell’s interview, and though Amazon lists an October 5 release date for the reissue of Pinkerton, a spokesperson for Geffen Records — the band’s former home and the label that will apparently be putting the album out — could not be reached for comment. In the meantime, Weezer are gearing up for the September 14 release of Hurley, their in-no-way-based-on-“Lost” album that just so happens to feature “Lost” actor Jorge Garcia on the cover .
