Jeremy Renner Talks ‘Avengers’ At Oscars

‘It’s tremendous. I can’t tell you anything about it,’ actor says of the highly secretive script. By Rick Marshall Jeremy Renner attends the 2011 Academy Awards Photo: Getty Images With ” The Avengers ” hitting theaters in 2012, all eyes are on Marvel’s heroes as we get closer to the day when Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and a host of other comic book characters (and the actors who play them) will appear together on the same screen. One of the superheroes who won’t be debuting in his own solo movie is Clint Barton, the expert archer known as Hawkeye. Played by “Hurt Locker” actor Jeremy Renner , Hawkeye will likely make his official debut in “The Avengers” — though recent rumors have pegged him for a cameo in “Thor.” MTV News caught up with Renner on the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards and pressed him for details about his debut as the bow-wielding marksman. “Yes, I have [read the ‘Avengers’ script],” Renner said. “It’s tremendous. I can’t tell you anything about it.” Calling the film a “massive undertaking,” Renner praised the ambition of “Avengers” director Joss Whedon , who’s tasked with putting all of Marvel’s biggest stars in the same film and making sure there’s enough spotlight to go around. “He [will need to] pull all of those characters off and have it make sense,” the actor said. Little is known about the plot of “Avengers” at this point, other than that it will bring together a long list of high-profile actors and the larger-than-life characters they play in Marvel’s movie universe. During last year’s Comic-Con in San Diego , Marvel unveiled the core “Avengers” cast of Renner, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) and Clark Gregg (S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson). In order to prepare for the role, Renner said archery lessons are indeed on his to-do list — though he has yet to see the costume he’ll don as Hawkeye. As for that rumor about Hawkeye making a cameo in “Thor,” Renner would neither confirm nor deny the possibility of fans getting an early peek at his take on the Avenger’s marksman. “I might [have a cameo in ‘Thor’],” he teased. “Go see it. Check it out.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Christina Aguilera at Jeremy Renner Birthday Party: Wasted!

On January 8, Christina Aguilera woke up in the bed of Jeremy Renner. But it’s not what you think. Not at all. A new report in Us Weekly states that Christina didn’t merely crash this Oscar nominee’s 40th birthday bash – she went all Snooki at the event, got “wasted” and passed out in the actor’s bedroom! Hold on tightly, Matt Rutler. You don’t want Christina to pass out on the sidewalk. “Christina was a mess at that party,” an insider says . “She acted like a fool. Her boyfriend was shushing her and telling her to go to sleep.” The magazine even quotes Renner himself as telling people about the incident at a Golden Globes after-party on Sunday night. “Someone comes and tells me she’s in my room,” he allegedly told pals. “I run up and open the door and I’m like, ‘Um, hi. What are you doing?’ She just starts slurring. Her boyfriend [Matthew Rutler, pictured] was rubbing her back. Who comes to someone’s birthday party that they don’t know and gets in their bed?!” He then (should have) added: “Genie in a bottle? More like drunk chick in my house! Am I right, fellas?!?” Aguilera also, allegedly, started a fight with Julianne Hough over the weekend. Sounds like someone needs to remember the lessons taught to her on the Mickey Mouse Club.

Is ‘The Town’ Oscar-Bound After Box-Office Win?

Brisk ticket sales, critical buzz make Ben Affleck’s Boston drama an Oscar hopeful. By Eric Ditzian Slaine, Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and Owen Burke in “The Town” Photo: Warner Bros. “The Town” floated out of the Venice Film Festival on a cloud of Oscar buzz, and heading into the weekend, most box-office prognosticators expected Ben Affleck’s drama to win the #1 spot. But who could have predicted that “The Town” would net $23.5 million , a September record for Warner Bros.? Now there’s no doubting that the guy who once starred in “Gigli” and “Jersey Girl” has a serious Oscar hopeful on his hands. “Typically September releases turn out to be Oscar frauds,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “Not so with ‘The Town,’ as it has the reviews and b.o. to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. Being #1 at the box office always helps the cause of any film, as it garners massive amounts of media attention.” Affleck’s Boston bank-robber tale is not only a contender for one of the 10 Best Picture nominations, but could land a nod in an acting category as well. “Either Jon Hamm or Jeremy Renner could easily end up in the Supporting Actor category,” said BoxOffice.com editor Phil Contrino, citing the film’s robust ticket sales. Another Boston-centric crime drama, “The Departed,” opened to similar numbers and critical acclaim in 2006. The Martin Scorsese film eventually nabbed five Oscar nominations, including Mark Wahlberg’s nod for Supporting Actor, and won four of them (including Best Picture and Best Director). Few would argue that Affleck’s movie will mirror the awards-season success of Scorsese’s, but as Contrino notes, “The Academy has a history of rewarding crime flicks that catch on in a major way and ultimately transcend their genre.” Oscar chances aside, what’s most remarkable about “The Town” is the fact that it made so much money with stars not nearly as high-profile as the ones in “Departed.” “Affleck, Renner and Hamm are certainly no [Leonardo] DiCaprio, [Jack] Nicholson, and [Matt] Damon,” Bock said. “That’s why the debut of ‘The Town’ is all the more impressive. Affleck achieved this opening on concept, not star power, which is becoming increasingly more potent in Hollywood of late.” Much credit is due to Warners’ marketing machine, which went to great lengths in TV ads to position “The Town” as more genre thriller than critical darling. “The ads punched up the proceedings by making the picture look (not just sound) like ‘The Departed’ and by using the Eminem song ‘Not Afraid,’ ” noted Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo . Box-office success, of course, is not always a requirement for Oscar love. Just look at “The Hurt Locker,” which won Best Picture over “Avatar” this year despite an anemic box-office showing. When the new nominations arrive early next year, we should expect a similar grouping of “Hurt Locker”-style small fare and “Avatar”-esque blockbusters. “With 10 nominations for Best Picture, more than ever there are opportunities for smaller films and major blockbusters to be in the mix. One of those films is ‘Inception,’ which is a shoo-in for a Best Picture [nod],” Bock said. “This year we will see a mix of both types of films, but odds are, we won’t have a smaller film win the award two years in a row, since it’s never happened before ‘The Hurt Locker.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Town.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Paul Thomas Anderson’s Scientology Film Gets Indefinitely Postponed

Looks like Jeremy Renner’s schedule just got slightly less complicated. According to the actor, Paul Thomas Anderson’s much-anticipated Scientology film The Master — which would have starred Philip Seymour Hoffman as a cult leader in the vein of L. Ron Hubbard — has been thrown into development hell. “I was really bummed about that,” Renner told the print edition of Total Film . “It really kind of stalled because when we were rehearsing — Phil, Paul and myself — we kept coming up against a wall that we couldn’t overcome. Or at least Paul couldn’t overcome.” Don’t worry: You can overcome by watching There Will Be Blood again. [Total Film via The Playlist ]

Jeremy Renner Signed For ‘Mission: Impossible IV’

Paramount announced addition of ‘Hurt Locker’ actor to star alongside Tom Cruise in next ‘M:I’ installment. By Kara Warner Jeremy Renner Photo: Kevin Winter/ WireImage From “The Hurt Locker” to Hawkeye in “The Avengers” to a role opposite superspy Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner’s career is on the rise, as Paramount announced today that the seasoned yet rising star will appear as an operative alongside Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible IV.” According to Deadline , Paramount production chief Adam Goodman feels Renner “has a Daniel Craig quality” that he wants for the role. Sources tell the site that the studio was also looking for an actor who might be able to continue on with the franchise, should Cruise choose not to return in the future (Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment). Other actors considered for the role include Tom Hardy (“Inception”), Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Renner’s “Hurt Locker” co-star Anthony Mackie. Although the production has had a few bumps and uncertainties along the way, Cruise has been vocal about his commitment to bring in new talent to the franchise. “My whole thing with the series is always having a new director come on and put their stamp on ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ” he told MTV News recently. “Brian De Palma was first, then John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Brad Bird, so it will be Brad Bird’s ‘Mission: Impossible.’ ” Regarding his thoughts on the story line — which is, of course, heavily under wraps — Cruise said simply: “It’s sick. It’s fun, really fun.” Ever since his star-making turn in last year’s award-season darling (and Best Picture winner) “The Hurt Locker,” Renner has been lining up a slate of prestigious and high-profile projects. He’ll next appear in Ben Affleck’s much buzzed about Boston drama “The Town,” followed by a stint as superhero Hawkeye in Joss Whedon’s “Avengers,” and then his role in “Mission: Impossible IV.” The production, directed by Bird, with Cruise and J.J. Abrams producing, is set to begin shooting this fall. Which Hurt Locker Star Will Play Opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible IV?

For a movie that grossed less than $20 million at the box office, The Hurt Locker sure has done well for stars Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie. Renner has already been cast as Hawkeye in The Avengers , while just this week it was revealed that Mackie — who is also co-starring in the Hugh Jackman sure-to-be smash Real Steel — was testing to star as Tom Cruise’s protege in Mission: Impossible IV . So, did Mackie get the job?

Justin Bieber Gets Disrespect From Jeremy Renner In MTV Movie Awards Promo

Aziz Ansari tells Renner, ‘That’s Justin Bieber, bro! People don’t talk back to him!’ By Josh Wigler Although his romantic movie date with Kristen Bell didn’t go so well, 2010 MTV Movie Awards host Aziz Ansari is giving “The Hurt Locker” another shot alongside teen sensation Justin Bieber. In a new promo for the June 6 awards show, Ansari and Bieber saddle up with some soda cans and potato chips to watch the critically acclaimed war movie in 4-D — a viewing experience that brings actor Jeremy Renner’s bomb disposal efforts straight out of the screen and right into the living room. But as Ansari begins gleefully cheering and Bieber starts eating his snacks too loudly during one particularly intense sequence, a visibly frustrated Renner loses his cool. “Relax on the chips there, cowboy,” Renner warns Bieber, prompting a startled Ansari to issue a warning of his own: “That’s Justin Bieber, bro! People don’t talk back to him!” Renner tells Ansari that he doesn’t know who Justin Bieber is, and frankly, he doesn’t care — not when there are deadly improvised explosive devices waiting to be disarmed. But Renner’s cell phone betrays those claims once it starts ringing for the whole room to hear — playing none other than “Baby,” Bieber’s chart-topping single. “You know exactly who Justin Bieber is!,” an angry Ansari exclaims as he leaps out of his chair. “And you just disrespected him!” As Ansari fumes like a freshly detonated bomb, Bieber keeps his rage in check with one last potato chip — a snack he eats while keeping his eyes firmly locked on the disrespectful Renner. Clearly, disrespecting Bieber is an act of insubordination! Don’t miss the MTV Movie Awards , airing Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV!
