Lady Gaga Cuts Ties With Laurieann Gibson

Gibson had been Gaga’s creative director for several years. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage After a long and fruitful creative partnership, Lady Gaga has broken ties with creative director Laurieann Gibson. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the split, which came after reports that the two women had a serious falling out. Gibson has been part of Gaga’s inner circle since well before the singer became an international superstar, beginning with the choreography for the 2008 “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich” video and continuing through the soon-to-be famous steps in clips for “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “Love Game,” “Paparazzi” and “Bad Romance.” The pair were closely associated throughout Gaga’s rise to fame, with Gibson providing the choreography and artistic input on such landmark videos as “Telephone,” “Alejandro” and “Born This Way.” Gibson, who previously appeared on MTV’s “Making the Band” with Diddy and the “Starmaker” reality show, has been stepping out on her own lately, including a starring role in the BET dance competition show “Born to Dance” and another dance reality series, E!’s “The Dance Scene.” Gibson also co-directed the Gaga videos for ” Judas ” and “You and I,” (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1669175/lady-gaga-laurieann-gibson-you-and-i-video.jhtml) but the women reportedly clashed on the set of the former, with Gibson expressing discomfort with the religious imagery in the clip. According to the Reporter, the tension was already showing during the filming of the “Judas” video, during which Gibson told the magazine, “At one point, there was two completely different views and after the third glass of wine, I was like, ‘Listen, I don’t want lightning to strike me. I believe in the Gospel and I’m not going there.” She was less adamant when talking to MTV News about the controversy, expressing pride in the final product. “I think the concept stuck with this one because, ultimately, there was a place where we wanted to leave the interpretation up to each individual and not take away [Gaga’s] power as a performer, as a dancer, as a star,” Gibson explained, alluding to the creative clashes the pair had about the “Born This Way” video. “And to leave the moments for you to interpret and be inspired by the fact that everyone has a Judas in their life and that there is a place of deliverance. For me, I interpret differently than her, and for someone else, they’ll interpret it differently.” A spokesperson for Gaga could not be reached for confirmation on the split at press time. Gibson also spoke out after she and Gaga failed to see eye-to-eye on the concept for the ” Edge of Glory ” video. After reports that video vet Joseph Kahn would be directing, Gaga instead went for a simpler cityscape treatment that drew some fire from fans. “Listen u disrespectful f–k they had an issue on set I don’t lie!!!!!”, Gibson tweeted at the time . “Creative Changes happen always educate ignorant Monster’s!!!” The Reporter noted that relations between the two continued to fray this summer over disagreements about the “You and I” video and Gaga seemed to confirm the end with a November 6 tweet in which she announced that Gibson’s former #2, Richard Jackson, is her new choreographer. Johnny Depp Signs On For Dr. Seuss Biopic

Actor, set to produce film, might star as the beloved children’s author. By Gil Kaufman Johnny Depp Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images In between stints as a pirate, a scissor-handed freak and a chocolate-factory wizard, Johnny Depp has played a real-life hopped-up writer, a cross-dressing director and a notorious bank robber. Now, the star has signed on to work on a film about one of the most-beloved authors of all time: Dr. Seuss. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Depp will produce and potentially star as Seuss (born Theodor Geisel), author of children’s classics such as “Green Eggs and Ham,” “The Cat in the Hat,” “Horton Hears a Who!” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” In addition to being turned into a number of hit movies (“Grinch” and “Cat in the Hat”), Geisel’s books have sold more than 200 million copies worldwide. The movie is unlikely to rely as heavily on CGI as Depp’s $1 billion-grossing foray into “Alice in Wonderland” with director Tim Burton, but it’s possible the Seuss film will include animated elements. Universal and production house Illumination Entertainment, currently joined in postproduction on an animated adaptation of Seuss’ “The Lorax,” and Infinitum Nihil also will work on the biopic. Seuss began his career in the late 1920s as a magazine illustrator, then shifted to drawing ads for companies including General Electric and NBC during the Great Depression, before shifting to political cartoons during World War II and, finally, turning his focus to children’s books in the 1950s. Among his first efforts was “Horton,” as well as 1957’s “Cat in the Hat” and “Grinch.” Geisel died of throat cancer in September 1991 at the age of 87. Depp already has a number of planes on the runway, including a turn as journalist Paul Kemp in “The Rum Diary,” a reported cameo in Martin Scorsese’s 3-D adaptation of “Hugo Cabret,” another collabo with Burton on “Dark Shadows” and a possible starring role as Tonto in the stalled big-screen remake of “The Lone Ranger.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Chris Christie Will NOT Run For President

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced today that he would not seek the Republican presidential nomination for president, saying “now is not my time.” Urged to run by many Republicans of late, Christie made his FINAL decision last night, “knowing exactly what I wanted to do” for the first time in weeks. The New Jersey governor vowed not to run approximately 700 times before, but “felt an obligation to earnestly consider” the appeals of “serious people.” Chris Christie: Get the Hell Off the Beach! He said he “explored the options” and thought about running but “in the end, what I’ve always felt was the right decision remains the right decision today.” “I have a commitment to New Jersey that I will not abandon,” Chris said during a lengthy, nearly hour-long press conference, adding with typical humor: “New Jersey, whether you like it or not, you’re stuck with me.” No matter where you are on the political spectrum, this decision is disappointing for the entertainment value alone. A rarity in his profession, Christie truly tells it like it is … and bluntly at that. He does not mince words. See above and below. Chris Christie Yelling at Reporter

Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV Smashes iTunes Record

Album is on track to sell more than 850,000 copies in its first week. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Lil Wayne always makes his fans wait longer than they might want to for his new albums. But when he does finally drop them, Carterites always show up to support their man. According to Weezy’s label, Tha Carter IV sold more than 300,000 downloads on iTunes in its first four days of release last week, beating out the first-week sales record recently set by Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne. The album, which was released digitally right after the 2011 VMAs, is also on pace to have the second biggest first-week sales of 2011, according to the Hollywood Reporter, with expected sales of 850,000. The combined physical and digital sales would make for the biggest first week for a hip-hop album since Tha Carter III, which sold 1.01 million in its first week in June 2008. While he will undoubtedly have an impressive bow on Wednesday when the final figures are released by Nielsen SoundScan, it will still likely fall short of the year’s biggest debut to date, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, which moved 1.3 million in its debut in June. Weezy, who closed the VMAs in memorable style, said that he wasn’t sweating the fact that Carter IV leaked five days early. In fact, he was kind of glad that fans got a sneak peek. “It just means people want to hear it,” Wayne told MTV News . “I mean, ’cause there’re people’s albums that come out that can be leaked and don’t leak, so I’m glad mines leaked.” Jay and Kanye avoided a leak with their Watch the Throne album, but the YMCMB camp has said they aren’t too concerned about how the leak could affect album sales. Via his Twitter account, Cash Money CEO Birdman has been promoting Weezy’s album for the past week or two, even predicting that Carter IV would sell a million copies in its first week, just like Carter III. Last week, he wrote , “C4.BMJR.#Dont Lie 1m. 1week They Know.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Lil Wayne Related Artists Lil Wayne

Beanie Sigel ‘Didn’t Apologize’ To Jay-Z

Philly MC concedes Hov ‘gave me an opportunity,’ but said press mistook his gratitude as an apology for dis tracks lobbed at Jay. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Beanie Sigel on “RapFix Live” Photo: MTV News Despite the lyrical vitriol Beanie Sigel shot Jay-Z ‘s way beginning in 2009, the Philadelphia MC is still grateful for the opportunity the rapper-turned-mogul gave him when he was just a budding Roc-A-Fella Records artist. However, during Beans’ visit to MTV News’ “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (July 6), he stopped short of saying he had apologized for his sharp words. XXLMag.com previously reported that the “The Truth” rapper expressed contrition after his Hov comments. But Beans, without specifically naming the outlet, said he felt the interview focused more on the controversy than his current projects, so much so that he still hasn’t bothered to read it. “I had a interview with somebody and we were supposed to talk about the music and what I was doing with myself and my music and my plans for the future, and what me and you have been sitting here on this couch conversating about kept coming up,” Beanie told host Sway. “I didn’t want to talk about that stuff no more. So if anybody read the article or the interview — I never even read it after I did the interview with [the reporter].” Sitting on the “RapFix Live” couch, Beans and Sway talked extensively about the rapper’s feelings on the demise of Roc-A-Fella, specifically, his falling out with its co-founders Jay-Z and Damon Dash. Beans alleges he never got a phone call from Dash or Jay saying that the Roc-A-Fella he knew was no more, and that left a sour taste in his mouth. And though Beans acknowledged that during his run with the label, most everything was all good, he just refuses to gloss over the bad. “I’ll reiterate today and tell you everything that we discussed and talked about out of all that was going on and the feelings that I might have had, whether they were good or bad, whether I was truthfully in my speech or wrong in my speech,” Beans said. “What we did together and what Jay did for me … he gave me something a lot of people don’t get in this music business for a life period. He gave me an opportunity. … We’ve been around the world together, people knew who I was, they embraced me, they wanted to wear the clothes we wore.” Despite Beanie’s grievances with Hov, the fiercely loyal Philly spitter admitted he owes the man his career. And Jay-Z has been steadfast in saying he always supported Beans the best he could. But Jay probably shouldn’t hold his breath waiting for an official apology. “At the end of the day, yo, all that don’t matter,” Beans said. “That opportunity supersedes my personal feelings. And he gave me that [opportunity]. You can’t deny he gave me that. So at the end of the day it’s about just growth and everything. It wasn’t no formal apology. I didn’t apologize. People took it that way. But it is what it is. At the end of the day, like I said, he gave me an opportunity.” What do you think of Beanie and Jay’s past conflict? Tell us in the comments.
