Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Adapted Screenplay

‘The Descendants’ and ‘Moneyball’ seem to be leading the race, but who will take home gold? By Kevin P. Sullivan Brad Pitt in “Moneyball” Photo: Columbia TriStar Woody Allen has dominated the race to decide the year’s best screenplay, winning the Golden Globe for “Midnight in Paris,” but when the Academy Awards split up the category into Adapted and Original, the former proves much harder to predict. Based on critic and guild awards, the competition for Best Adapted Screenplay comes down to two films: “Moneyball” and “The Descendants.” Each has won significant prizes in the past few months, so the category could result in one of the night’s few genuine surprises. Here are our predictions for Best Adapted Screenplay: Who Will Win : Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash for “The Descendants.” Unfortunately, this will be the film’s consolation prize in a night dominated by Jean Dujardin and “The Artist.” Without all of the hype surrounding Michel Hazanavicius’ silent film, the story of a soon-to-be widower in Hawaii would be the odds-on favorite to take Best Picture and Actor. True to his reputation, Payne and his co-writers crafted a subtle, sad and touching film that keeps you laughing the entire way through. He has proven himself to be one of our most consistent auteurs. And although Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian’s screenplay for “Moneyball” deserves its spot as a front runner, Sorkin’s win for “The Social Network” only happened a year ago. Who Should Win : Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Straughan and his late wife O’Connor faced the challenge of not only adapting a beloved novel, but one that had been previously adapted into a beloved miniseries. Skrillex, 12th Planet Play To Sold-Out L.A. Crowd

Skrill’s high-energy gig with Diplo was part of six-show EDM series in Los Angeles. By Lara Kathleen Kelley Skrillex and 12th Planet perform in Los Angeles Photo: Michelle Oglakhchyan It’s officially Skrillex week in Los Angeles, where MTV’s EDM Artist of the Year just finished his second gig in a series of six back-to-back shows, each spotlighting diverse talent in the now-reigning dubstep scene. Wednesday night’s gig at CYP2, a popular bi-weekly indie dance music event, featured Skrillex performing a back-to-back set with 12th Planet, Diplo and UK producer Caspa for a jam-packed crowd at the Echoplex. “The show sold out in under 20 minutes,” said Danny Johnson, co-producer of CYP2. “Skrillex and 12th Planet are best buds, Caspa is a dubstep don and Diplo has championed these artists from day one, so the lineup made perfect sense and the fans went crazy for it.” As soon as the doors opened, partygoers piled in, energy high and anticipation permeating the air. Music pumped from the speakers by DJ Franki Chan, owner of the IHeartComix label and CYP2 co-producer. Then DJ/producer Diplo lit up the crowd with bass-heavy beats and hard-core hip-hop tracks. But it wasn’t until Skrillex took the stage with 12th Planet that the fans went crazy and began screaming, chanting and moshing for the dubstep duo. Skrillex pumped up the fans and held them at his fingertips with tracks like “Breakin’ a Sweat” and “Right on Time.” The set included all of their popular singles as well as remixes of Avicii’s “Levels,” La Roux’s “In for the Kill” and Rusko’s “Hold On.” Their two-and-a-half-hour set kept the crowd on their feet and begging for more bass until the lights came on. 12th Planet, born John Dadzie, had nothing but great things to say about the five-time Grammy-nominated artist formerly known as Sonny Moore. “Skrillex and I met at Ultra Music Festival a few years ago and have been good friends ever since,” he said. “We started doing collaborations together, and he would sing vocals during my sets. Since then, Skrillex has become a beast, and now when I get the opportunity to work with him, I learn as much as I possibly can. 12th Planet, recently deemed “U.S. dubstep godfather” by dance-music magazine Mixmag, spent much of 2011 on tour with Skrillex. “Performing with Skrillex reminds me of how much fun it is to tag-team DJ with one of your good friends. I love the chemistry that comes together when I play with Skrillex … we can pretty much connect by E.S.P. during our sets.” Just this month, 12th Planet released his five-track free-for-download The End Is Near. It will be complimented by a 28-city North American tour that kicks off on February 2 in Miami, Florida. The week-long Skrillex takeover continues with a show Thursday (January 26) night at the Exchange in Downtown L.A. followed by massive gigs at the Avalon in Hollywood Friday night, the Palladium on Saturday and L.A. Live on Sunday. Are you planning on seeing Skrillex live? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Best EDM Artist Of 2011 Debate Related Artists Skrillex

Too $hort, Lil’ Kim Tried To Make ‘Musical Sex’ On ‘Call Me’

‘We tried to, like, have sex on the song,’ Too $hort tells ‘RapFix Live’ of he and Lil Kim’s 1997 collabo. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Too $hort Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Too $hort has built quite the reputation with the ladies in his 30-plus years in rap. Songs like “Freaky Tales” and “I’m a Player” expertly showcase Short Dog’s ability to swoon women with his raps, so when his record label requested that he work with Lil’ Kim on the 1997 single “Call Me,” Kim’s then on-and-off boyfriend the Notorious B.I.G. was more than a little concerned. “I paid for the tickets for Kim and her manager to come to Atlanta and I went to pick them up to take them to the studio and who gets off the plane? No Lil’ Kim, it was Biggie,” Too $hort recalled with a laugh when he appeared on Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live.” Though $hort and B.I.G. had built a good rapport before the Brooklyn great was slain in 1997, prior to recording with Kim, they didn’t really know each other. Too $hort remembers B.I.G. coming off the plane on a pair of crutches that he was forced to use after he was involved in a car accident. The two sat down to talk, and according to $hort, the Notorious one inquired about the Oakland rapper’s intentions with his artist and sometime love interest. “So what’s goin’ on with you and Kim? What’s happenin’?” Too $hort remembered Biggie asking. After $hort explained to Big that he only was interested in recording with Kim for his single, the “Juicy” rapper approved the collaboration. “He wanted to know what was goin’ on with his little thang before he let it happen,” $hort said. “So I explained it to him… and sure enough she showed up on the next flight. We got in the lab and we worked it out.” Kim, who titled her 1996 debut album Hardcore, had become known for her sexually explicit lyrics, just like Too $hort, but the first version of “Call Me” didn’t quite meet expectations, $hort revealed. “Believe it or not, we did the song and everybody said, ‘Man, it’s not dirty enough’,” $hort laughed. Eventually they re-recorded the dirty version that fans have come to know. “We tried to, like, have sex on the song,” he said. “It wasn’t physical sex, but we tried to make musical sex. I think we achieved it.” Did you catch Too $hort on Wednesday’s ‘RapFix Live’? Share your thoughts on the interview in the comments! Justin Bieber on Making Love: Give Me Time!

New excerpts from Justin Bieber’s interview with V been released. Along with touching on his relationship with God in the February issue, the singer gets personal with the magazine by also dishing on love, drugs and sex. “I’m not going to try to conform to what people want me to be or go out there and start partying, have people see me with alcohol. I want to do it at my own pace,” Bieber said of his age and his reputation. “I don’t want to start singing about things like sex, drugs and swearing. I’m into love, and maybe I’ll get more into making love when I’m older. But I want to be someone who is respected by everybody.” Hear that, Selena Gomez ?!? Just be patient, girl. But the singer has goals that extend beyond love making. He says of his professional aspiration, which are not low: “I want to be successful and be great at what I do. But eventually, I want to become the best at what I do. I want to be better than anybody who’s ever done it. And in order to do that, I need to strive to be the best, be good to people and treat people with respect, and work as hard as I can. Because for me, I work so hard and this consumes my life — it’s not worth it if I’m not the best.” He’s well on his way to getting there, don’t you think?

Kim Kardashian Demands Kuiet, Kash from Former PR Guru

Kim Kardashian is firing back at someone who has the nerve to claim her life is a hoax. Jonathan Jaxson, some random guy in the PR game – who, it should be noted, is releasing a book – has been making the media rounds this week and saying he has inside knowledge of Kardashian’s numerous publicity scams. For example: Jaxson alleges he once helped Kim orchestrate a jewelery store visit when she was dating Reggie Bush, alerting the paparazzi to this staged event and making it look like an engagement was imminent. He also says Kim’s wedding to Kris Humphries was nothing but a scam. But Kardashian has hired attorney Marty Singer to silence Jaxon because she says the pair only worked together once and he’s violating a confidentiality agreement by spouting off to the press. “Everything that he is saying is false and nonsense… This guy is in it to promote himself for his 15 mins of fame,” Singer tells TMZ. Jaxon, in response, says there was an agreement in place… but neither party actually signed in. Kim, meanwhile, is seeking $200,000 in damages. Because, clearly, the public questioning her sincerity has seriously damaged her reputation and her bank account. [Photo: WENN.com]

Mariah Carey officially has her groove – and boy – back. Six months after welcoming twins Moroccan and Monroe, the singer has lost 30 pounds, which she shows off in a big way on the new cover of Us Weekly . “I just gained an enormous amount of weight,” Carey says of the twin boy and girl she welcomed April 30 – her wedding anniversary with spouse Nick Cannon. Looking at the short shorts and toned belly, that’s a distant memory now … How did Mariah Carey pull off this weight loss plan? In July, Carey buckled down with a nutritionist and a workout plan from Jenny (formerly Jenny Craig), keeping to 1,500 calories a day and thrice-weekly workouts. “I feel incredible,” she says, just three months after her body transformation began. “It was just the biggest blessing to be able to have the babies,” Carey adds. “But I felt trapped in my body because I couldn’t move.” But now, she says, “I’m proud of how hard I worked to get my body back… I had to do this for me.” We’d say she did a heck of a job. Joe Paterno to Retire from Penn State, Expresses Remorse Over Role in Sexual Abuse Scandal

No one thought it would end this way for Joe Paterno: the iconic Penn State football coach has announced his retirement, effective at the end of this season, due to the ongoing sex scandal surrounding the university’s athletic department. In 2002, Paterno learned that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky may have abused a boy in a locker room shower, but only reported the incident to the athletic director, as opposed to the police. “I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief,” the record-breaking coach state in a statement, adding: “I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can. This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.”
