NBC has responded to Sharon Osbourne’s accusation that it discriminated against her son Jack. The America’s Got Talent judge announced her resignation from that program this week, saying she simply couldn’t work any longer for a network that fired Jack from Stars Earn Stripes because he has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. But NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt fired back today, explaining the stance of his network in more detail and admitting medical concerns did play a factor is choosing NOT to have Jack compete against other celebrities in military training exercises. Said Greenblatt: “We hold medical information in strict confidence and therefore cannot comment specifically about Jack, but as a company that cares deeply about the health and safety of everyone on our shows – especially one like ‘Stars Earn Stripes’ that requires dangerous water stunts, strenuous physical activity, and uses live ammunition – we required all potential participants to undergo medical vetting to ensure that they could safely participate. “Although we did not ask Jack to participate in the competition, we were able to offer him two substantial alternative roles on the show, both of which he declined. This network does not discriminate on any basis. “Our hearts go out to her, Ozzy, Jack and his family at this time.”
After two and a half years running Disney , during which time the Mouse House released hits like Pirates of the Caribbean 4 , Alice in Wonderland , Toy Story 3 , The Muppets , and The Help — but also a string of disappointments topped by last month’s quarter-billion dollar bomb John Carter — studio head Rich Ross is out. “The best people need to be in the right jobs, in roles they are passionate about, doing work that leverages the full range of their abilities,” Ross said in a statement. “It’s one of the leadership lessons I’ve learned during my career, and it’s something I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to as I look at the challenges and opportunities ahead… I no longer believe the Chairman role is the right professional fit for me.” [ Deadline ]
Another day, another Catholic Church scandal. An assistant bishop of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Los Angeles has resigned because he has a secret family, including two teenage children. The Vatican said on Wednesday that Pope Benedict had accepted the resignation of Gabino Zavala, an auxiliary bishop of the diocese which has been plagued by sexual scandals. A brief Vatican announcement did not give the reason for Zavala’s resignation, saying only that the pope had accepted it under the norm in canon (Church law) that says a bishop who is ill or otherwise unfit to carry out his duties should resign. But Zavala’s direct superior, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez, has prepared a letter for the faithful in the archdiocese explaining the circumstances of the departure of Zavala, who was assistant bishop for the San Gabriel region of California. In the letter, a draft of which was obtained from a Catholic Church source in Rome, Gomez said Zavala, 60, had informed him in early December that he was the father of two teenage children who live with their mother in another state. The Catholic Church demands celibacy from its priests. “Bishop Zavala also told me that he submitted his resignation to the Holy Father in Rome, which was accepted. Since that time, he has not been in ministry and will be living privately,” Gomez says in the letter. “The Archdiocese has reached out to the mother and children to provide spiritual care as well as funding to assist the children with college costs. The family’s identity is not known to the public, and I wish to respect their right to privacy,” the letter says. Gomez asked for prayers “for all those impacted by this situation and for each other as we reflect on this letter.” Zavala’s resignation is the latest headache for the diocese, which paid a $660 million settlement in 2007 for cases of sexual abuse going as far back at the 1940. Zavala was also the latest Catholic Church official who was found to have had a secret family. The late leader of the Legionaries of Christ religious order, Father Marcial Maciel, who died in 2008 at the age of 87, lived a double life for decades that was not discovered until after his death. Maciel, a Mexican, was found to have abused seminarians. He was also discovered to have had a mistress with whom he had fathered several children. SMH… We understand that the whole celibacy thing was meant to make these men closer to God — but after all these scandals, shouldn’t they maybe at least re-think the policy??? Source More On Bossip! As cool-looking, dumb and deadly serious as you could desire, Immortals openly aims to be the heir to 300 , and succeeds in at least being a reasonable facsimile that hits many (too many) of the same testosterone-driven beats. The battles are just as imaginatively bloody, the abs painstakingly chiseled, the dialogue tin-eared, only this time around the stakes are not just the fate of the historic(esque) world, but of the divine one as well. There are gods in this film, beautiful, gold-cloaked ones who watch worriedly from atop Olympus as Greece is overrun by the armies of the wicked King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), a man who wants nothing less than to bring about the destruction of their divine order, though they’re forbidden to interfere in the world of man for…oh, who knows why? Also, it’s in 3-D — dark, dark 3-D I’d avoid if given the option.
I wrote as much on Monday, but take it from AMPAS president Tom Sherak: “Someone the Academy hired to perform a very important function messed up, messed up badly. He’s done everything he can, but this is him. The Academy did what it needed to do by accepting his resignation when he offered it. Does it tarnish it? I hope not. If someone feels it does, then we will work really hard getting the tarnish off. It wasn’t us, it was someone who worked for us. It’s like anything else. I hope not. We are going to continue to do what we do, which is support the arts and the technology of arts, and we want to be as above the fray as we can be.” [ LAT ]
‘He will certainly bring his tremendous talent, creativity and relationships to the Oscars,’ Academy Awards president Tom Sherak says By Kara Warner Brian Grazer Photo: MTV News With all the Oscar news making the rounds this week, you would think that the 84th annual Academy Awards were just around the corner. Luckily, we still have more than three months until the live telecast on February 26, and more than a month until nominations are announced. The latest news coming straight from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is that Brett Ratner, who tendered his resignation on Tuesday, has been replaced with producer Brian Grazer , who will co-produce the telecast with industry veteran Don Mischer. “Brian Grazer is a renowned filmmaker who over the past 25 years has produced a diverse and extraordinary body of work,” Academy president Tom Sherak said in a statement posted on Oscars.org . “He will certainly bring his tremendous talent, creativity and relationships to the Oscars.” “I am thrilled to welcome Brian Grazer as my partner and that we will be collaborating to produce an outstanding show,” echoed Mischer in the statement. “It’s very gratifying to be part of a show that honors excellence in the medium to which I have devoted so much of my career,” said Grazer. “Don is a legend, and I am excited to work with him.” Grazer’s credentials seem a good fit for producing Hollywood’s “biggest night.” He’s been nominated four times (for writing “Splash,” and Best Picture nods for “Apollo 13” and “Frost/Nixon.”) and won the Best Picture Oscar in 2001 for “A Beautiful Mind.” Coincidentally, Grazer has worked with recently resigned host, Eddie Murphy , on “The Nutty Professor” and “Tower Heist.” Rumor has it that the Academy and Grazer hope that Murphy will reconsider his decision not to be involved in the program. Throughout your life you will develop hundreds of relationships, from the important ones, to the ones that won’t quite matter as much. The very first relationships in our lives are the most important ones, because from there we learn to trust and receive love. Some of us had parents or guardians that were affectionate and taught us the morals, values and principles that make us the adults we are today. But since everyone doesn’t have the same foundation, many adults have short-comings and do not understand how relationships should work. Growing up, I witnessed all types of dysfunctional relationships, from my parents’ to screaming matches from the violent couple who lived next door to us. And because of this, I spent several of my young adult years confused as to why my own relationships were dysfunctional. I wasn’t unaware that my actions and thoughts were a reflection of my views about relationships in general. Eventually, I broke the vicious cycle of the behavior that I was putting out and learned the proper ingredients to healthy relationships. Here are 6 keys to a good relationship: 1. Friendship 2. Respect 3. Honesty 4. Trust 5. Understanding 6. Communication As adults, we can no longer blame our upbringing or past on why we are the way we are, or why we only relate to certain types of people and situations. We are all capable of having long-lasting, meaningful relationships while we are on this journey called life. Last month, L.A. Reid announced his departure as chairman of Island Def Jam Records to secure a judging gig for the U.S. edition of Simon Cowell’s reality singing competition ‘The X Factor,’ which is scheduled to premiere in September. Maybe the letters from Nas and Shyne finally got to him but Reid will now be searching for new talent instead of managing the demands of current acts. The BoomBox.com caught up with Reid to find out why he left behind a gig behind a desk to wade through scores of wannabees looking for their big break. Why did you decide to leave Def Jam to join ‘The X Factor’? L.A. Reid: Well, I decided to do ‘The X Factor’ largely because of Simon Cowell and my admiration for Simon and how he’s developed this show, how he’s developed this format of music television, and how he’s developed his own career. I really admire Simon. When he called me it was a no-brainer because I admire him that much. And the second reason was I love artists and I love music. I love the excitement of entertainment and I love ‘The X Factor’ as a platform to discover the next generation of superstar talent. READ THE FULL INTERVIEW @ TVSQUAD.COM RELATED ARTICLES: L.A.
