Jeremy Renner Signed For ‘Mission: Impossible IV’

Paramount announced addition of ‘Hurt Locker’ actor to star alongside Tom Cruise in next ‘M:I’ installment. By Kara Warner Jeremy Renner Photo: Kevin Winter/ WireImage From “The Hurt Locker” to Hawkeye in “The Avengers” to a role opposite superspy Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner’s career is on the rise, as Paramount announced today that the seasoned yet rising star will appear as an operative alongside Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible IV.” According to Deadline , Paramount production chief Adam Goodman feels Renner “has a Daniel Craig quality” that he wants for the role. Sources tell the site that the studio was also looking for an actor who might be able to continue on with the franchise, should Cruise choose not to return in the future (Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment). Other actors considered for the role include Tom Hardy (“Inception”), Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Renner’s “Hurt Locker” co-star Anthony Mackie. Although the production has had a few bumps and uncertainties along the way, Cruise has been vocal about his commitment to bring in new talent to the franchise. “My whole thing with the series is always having a new director come on and put their stamp on ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ” he told MTV News recently. “Brian De Palma was first, then John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Brad Bird, so it will be Brad Bird’s ‘Mission: Impossible.’ ” Regarding his thoughts on the story line — which is, of course, heavily under wraps — Cruise said simply: “It’s sick. It’s fun, really fun.” Ever since his star-making turn in last year’s award-season darling (and Best Picture winner) “The Hurt Locker,” Renner has been lining up a slate of prestigious and high-profile projects. He’ll next appear in Ben Affleck’s much buzzed about Boston drama “The Town,” followed by a stint as superhero Hawkeye in Joss Whedon’s “Avengers,” and then his role in “Mission: Impossible IV.” The production, directed by Bird, with Cruise and J.J. Abrams producing, is set to begin shooting this fall. Super Bowl Could Push Oscars To Mondays In 2013

Awards show has taken place on Sunday nights for the past decade. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Jamie McCarthy/WireImage The Oscars may get blitzed by the NFL. The producers behind the biggest night in movies (well, except for the MTV Movie Awards ), are considering moving the Academy Awards from its Sunday night seat to Monday nights in order to avoid competition from the National Football League. According to Variety , Oscar runners are keeping a close eye on the negotiations between NFL owners and players over a new collective bargaining agreement that could add two games to the regular season, which could push the Super Bowl to the same night as the Oscars. Unnamed sources told the magazine that the switch from 16 to 18 games is an almost sure thing beginning with the 2012-13 season. Rather than endure scorching August preseason games and potential conflicts with baseball, the NFL is likely to push the start of the regular season past Labor Day, which would kick the playoffs into February. If that scenario unfolds, then the Super Bowl — typically held the first Sunday in February — could air on the same night as the 2013 Academy Awards in late February. The executive director of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences, Bruce Davis, said he’s keeping an eye on the NFL situation and is prepared to possibly shift the Oscars back to Monday, the night on which the show aired for decades before moving to Sunday in 1999. “Yes, it’s a concern for us,” Davis said of the NFL scenario, noting that the academy and football league have had some back-channel discussions, though he doubted the NFL would take the needs of the Hollywood awards show into consideration when making its decision on the new schedule. “I think our inclination would be to go earlier rather than later, but we need to see,” Davis said of possibly moving the show to a Monday in February rather than back to the first week of March in order to avoid the most-viewed program of the year. “There’s no rule it has to be on a Sunday … we’re looking at a lot of different options.” The Oscar-cast has moved around quite a bit over the years, shifting up to February in 2004 after complaints about the too-long awards season and moving back a week twice in the past six years to avoid competing with the Winter Olympics. The NFL shuffle could also impact the Grammys, which also air in February, but its unlikely to force a shift in the date for that show.

Angelina Jolie Considering ‘Unforgiven’ Role Based On British Miniseries

GK Films is tailoring script for the ‘Salt’ star. By Adam Rosenberg Angelina Jolie Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Angelina Jolie’s schedule is rapidly filling up. Earlier this week, it was revealed that she’ll be writing and directing her first feature, a love story set during the Bosnian War, which she’ll also produce with Graham King. Now, she may have a new starring role coming up as well, for a movie that King will also produce. The producer’s GK Films is developing a feature adaptation of the 2009 U.K. miniseries “Unforgiven” for Jolie to star in, Deadline reports. A director hasn’t been set yet, but “The Usual Suspects” writer Christopher McQuarrie is taking care of the script. “Unforgiven,” not to be confused with the Oscar-winning 1992 Western starring Clint Eastwood, follows a woman who is newly released from jail after serving a 15-year sentence for the murder of two police officers. The killing happened when attempts were made to evict her and her family from their home. Now free, all the ex-con wants is to live in peace, a desire not easily fulfilled thanks to a revenge plot staged by one of her victims’ two sons. The original U.K. version aired as a three-part miniseries early last year. Suranne Jones starred as Ruth Slater, the role that Jolie is up for. Jones has done a fair bit of U.K. television, and is probably best known for her role as Karen McDonald on the soap opera “Coronation Street.” Jolie is having a strong year at the movies. Earlier this summer, she starred in the box-office hit “Salt,” a Russian-spy thriller that has so far grossed more than $200 million worldwide. In December she stars opposite Johnny Depp in “The Tourist,” a King-produced thriller directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck that was recently moved up from its previously planned 2011 release. Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot has taken a page out of David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo talent search by pairing one American with four foreign-born actresses in an attempt to cast Peter Parker’s love interest (who, FYI, isn’t Mary Jane). The current shortlist : Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Lily Collins, Ophelia Lovibond and Emma Roberts. ( Mary Elizabeth Winstead was on the list, too, but unfortunately didn’t make the cut.) Based on previous experience , expect the role to go to Roberts. [ THR /Heat Vision ]

Sarah Palin Reacts To Levi Johnston And Bristol Palin’s Engagement

Former Alaska governor’s statement emphasizes daughter’s belief in ‘redemption and forgiveness.’ By Gil Kaufman Sarah Palin (file) Photo: Chip Somodevilla/ Getty Images You can bet things are going to be a bit tense at the reception. Just hours after the cover of this week’s Us Weekly was revealed — depicting a once-again engaged Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston — Bristol’s mother, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin weighed in on the surprise news. “Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what’s best for our children,” Palin and snowmobiling husband Todd said in a statement that was read on the “Today” show on Wednesday morning (July 14). “Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.” The not-so-subtle message of the statement appeared to diss to high school dropout Johnston, 20, the one-time Playgirl model and aspiring actor who went on a tear criticizing the Palin household after he and Bristol broke up in December 2008, two weeks after their son, Tripp, was born. Bristol told Us that the couple got engaged again two weeks ago, that she had forgiven Levi for his unkind words and that they had not alerted her mom to the news, a decision she said made her a little afraid. “We got engaged two weeks ago,” she admitted. “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents. … It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she’ll jump onboard.” Abstinence advocate Bristol is pictured wearing all white on the cover and standing alongside Johnston, also dressed in white and holding Tripp. “Today” reported that no wedding date has been set yet, but that the young couple would like to tie the knot quickly, perhaps as soon as next month. Until then, they are reportedly living separately. What do you think of Sarah Palin’s statement? Tell us in comments below.

Will Mark Ruffalo Play The Hulk In ‘The Avengers’?

Actor is reportedly ‘in late-stage discussions’ to take over Edward Norton’s role in the comic book supergroup. By Kara Warner Mark Ruffalo Photo: Mike Coppola/ FilmMagic Hot on the heels of Marvel’s big announcement Monday that Edward Norton would not be reprising the role of Bruce Banner in “The Avengers” comes a report that studio head Kevin Feige and company have tapped Mark Ruffalo to take over the role. According to Deadline Hollywood Daily , Ruffalo is “now in late-stage discussions between Marvel and his brand-new agency United Talent to play this key member of the Avengers ensemble.” Regarding the ensemble in question, which includes Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/ Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Feige’s statement seemed to hint that the production wanted more of a team player: ” ‘The Avengers’ demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble. … We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.” Whether Norton fit the bill is up for debate, but Ruffalo has often appeared in films as part of an ensemble or in various scene-stealing supporting roles (he was also an MTV Movie Awards nominee with “13 Going on 30” co-star Jennifer Garner for Best Musical Performance in 2005) and has a reputation within the industry for being very well-liked among his peers. When MTV News spoke with Ruffalo about the possibility of his taking on a comic book character or movie, the actor revealed he had been in talks to play Harvey Dent in “The Dark Knight,” calling it the “Godfather” of comic book movies. “[It] raises the bar on anything,” he said of “The Dark Knight.” “Nothing can touch it in that genre. It’s great filmmaking.” Ruffalo added that he wasn’t sure if tights or superhero garb were in his future, but that he’s open to the opportunity. “I don’t know if I’ll ever end up in that world,” Ruffalo told MTV News. “But I’d love to work with Christopher Nolan. He’s one of those directors you want to work with. He’s a great director.” What do you think of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner? Let us know in the comments!

Which Emmy Nominees May Be One Step Closer to an EGOT?

One thing left unexplored on this Emmy Nomination Day is the EGOT, the extremely rare phenomenon that occurs when an entertainer wins an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. (Ironically, though the EGOT got its biggest spotlight ever thanks to Tracy Morgan’s recent obsession with it on 30 Rock , he wasn’t nominated for his role this season.) Here are the 2010 Emmy nominees who could get one step closer to attaining the Showbiz Award Grand Slam that has only been claimed by a dozen performers ever.
