Taylor Swift And John Mayer’s Awkward L.A. Run-In

Sources say the former pair tried to avoid each other out at a West Hollywood bar after his Rolling Stone confession. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift and John Mayer Photo: FilmMagic/WireImage John Mayer and Taylor Swift had the misfortune of being the same place at the same time on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Making things all the more awkward was the fact that earlier that day, Rolling Stone published an interview with Mayer in which he admitted that Swift left him “really humiliated” when she released her track, “Dear John.” Swift and Mayer had their run-in at West Hollywood hotspot Tower Bar. According to the New York Post , Swift walked into the hangout and noticed Mayer, who was there with a friend. “Taylor very visibly — in front of the entire restaurant — demanded to be moved to the other side,” the eyewitness said. “The bar’s usually an oasis of calm and privacy for celebrities and power players, but this was drama central.” Meanwhile sources tell UsMagazine.com that she’s still reeling from his interview. “I can’t believe he is trying to play the victim!” the source said of Mayer, who reportedly dated Swift in 2009, while they were working on music together. “John was a player and treated her like s–t,” another insider says. “He looked at her as a conquest. Taylor is going to think even less of him now!” While he may feel that using their relationship as fodder for her Speak Now ballad was “cheap songwriting,” when MTV News spoke to Mayer in 2009, he was singing a different, more pleasant, tune about the pop star. “I woke up with the song in my head called ‘Half of My Heart,’ ” he explained, noting that the Battle Studies duet came about via Twitter messages they shared. “And the idea is that it’s this real sort of updated — not that it needs to be updated — sort of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks thing. “I thought, ‘Well, if this is going to be my love letter to that style of music, who’s going to be the Stevie Nicks in this equation?’ ” he recalled. “And I thought, ‘This Taylor Swift girl is going to be around for a long time.'” So, what is making Mayer so angry these days? Well, on her song, she sings, “Dear John/ I see it all now that you’re gone/ Don’t you think I was too young/ To be messed with/ The girl in the dress/ Cried the whole way home/ I should’ve known.” “I never got an email. I never got a phone call,” he said in the new interview, out this week. “I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I’d already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you’ve ever been, someone kicked you even lower?” Related Artists Taylor Swift John Mayer

Against Me! Singer Tom Gabel Plays First Show As Woman

Transgender singer Tom Gabel is now performing as Laura Jane Grace. By Gil Kaufman Tom Gabel of Against Me! Photo: Getty Images Just weeks after coming out as transgender , Against Me! singer Tom Gabel performed her first show as Laura Jane Grace. The 40-minute set at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay in San Diego was the first stop in a month-long U.S. tour with the Cult and according to Rolling Stone , the show included six new songs. Among the fresh tunes was the title track of the album the quartet is working on, “Transgender Dysphoria Blues.” In the RS interview, Gabel/Grace said she’s been dealing with gender dysphoria for years, struggling since childhood with discomfort in her male body . After detailing the upcoming steps she plans to take as part of the transition, Grace said she planned to live her life as a woman for a full year before thinking about gender-reassignment surgery. At the San Diego show, Grace wore a loose-fitting black tank top, tight black jeans and black eye shadow. “I was worried that some people expected me to come out looking like Little Bo Peep or something,” Grace told the mag after the show while hanging out at the merch table with her wife, Heather. She said she’d be happy to discuss her transition with fans, but since most of the crowd were there for the Cult, the stage patter was kept to a minimum. When the band played the 2007 song “The Ocean,” which includes the lines “If I could have chosen / I would have been born a woman,” fans sang along and broke into cheers and applause. “She did it for herself, not for anybody else. This is about her,” said longtime fan Jimmy Gomez, 23. “She’s doing something she really loves now and she’s really happy — that’s really awesome.” Grace is two weeks into hormone replacement therapy, which involves redistribution of her body’s muscle mass. And while she was worried about how it might affect her stamina, the band plowed through the show with no apparent issues. Among the new songs they performed were: “Osama bin Laden as the Crucified Christ,” “Dead Friend,” “True Trans Soul Rebel,” “Drinking with the Jocks” and “Black Me Out.” Related Artists Against Me!

Tom Gabel Comes Out As Transgender: In Praise Of Bravery

Why the Against Me! singer’s decision to live as a woman is also a genuine act of courage, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Tom Gabel of Against Me! Photo: Getty Images Tom Gabel probably didn’t want to be praised for her decision to come out as transgender ; she just wanted to be comfortable in her own body. But I’m going to praise her anyway. Because when Gabel announced to Rolling Stone on Tuesday that she planned to begin living as a woman — after struggling privately with gender dysphoria for years — it was undoubtedly the most personal thing a major recording artist has ever gone public with, an admission that’s sure to make her the target of cruel insults and petty insinuations (to say nothing about what it might mean for the future of her band, Against Me!). But rather than focus on the close-mindedness of a select few, it is certainly more worthwhile — not to mention important — to laud Gabel for what is, in its purest form, a genuine act of bravery. To be fair, Gabel is not the first musician to come out as transgender. In the 1970s, electronic artist Walter Carlos announced that he, too, suffered from gender dysphoria and underwent sexual reassignment surgery to live life as Wendy Carlos. And just last year, Life of Agony singer Keith Caputo made headlines when he became Mina Caputo. But Gabel’s case is different. Since her earliest days, she has always been a punk pariah , criticized for “selling out” at every step of her career. I got the sense this bothered her on some level (how could it not? ), because when I interviewed Gabel in 2006 for AM!’s major-label debut, New Wave, she definitely made mention of it, saying: “There is no pleasing everybody. … I guarantee our new record will get the same reaction that all our records get. Some will be like ‘It’s awesome,’ and others will be like ‘I absolutely hate it.’ But fast-forward a few years, and the ones who said they hated it are the ones who say they loved it all along.” It will be interesting to see how Against Me!’s fans — and detractors — react when Gabel begins living life as Laura Jane Grace, because they definitely can’t accuse her of selling out anymore. If anything, her decision to begin gender reassignment treatments is the most punk-rock thing imaginable: being true to one’s self, being unafraid to be different, speaking out regardless of the repercussions. These are the tenets the genre (and, for what it’s worth, way of life) were founded on — and, really, what they should still be about today. If you have a problem with Gabel’s decision, you’re probably not a punk at all. In coming out as transgender, Gabel will undoubtedly inspire others to do the same. She is proof that the truth is nothing to be ashamed of, that there is nothing as important — or admirable — as living the life you want to, on your own terms, detractors be damned. And the fact that Gabel’s wife, Heather, will remain by her side as she begins this new chapter is not only equally inspiring, but, in the wake of the passage of North Carolina’s Amendment 1 , which made law that only a “marriage between one man and one woman” would be recognized by the state, it seems even more important. Because truly, is there any greater definition of love — or support, or dedication or unwavering union — than what they share? You can quote biblical verses to deny that fact, but really, you’d be missing the point. For years, fans like me have marveled at Gabel’s pained yet poignant lyrics, with their searing desires to break free and find a place in the world (on the standout New Wave track “The Ocean,” Gabel growled, “And if I could have chosen/ I would have been born a woman”). It turns out, it went much deeper than that: Gabel was at war with her own body, and now, finally, she’s found the courage to make peace with that conflict. It’s beyond admirable; it’s downright brave. Like she told me six years ago, “There is no pleasing everybody.” Ultimately, you’ve got to please yourself. And with courage and conviction, Gabel has done that. No matter how you feel about her new life, you can’t deny that it’s everyone’s basic right to live life on their terms. That goes beyond music or politics or religion: It’s humanity, pure and simple. Related Artists Against Me!

Against Me! Singer Tom Gabel Comes Out As Transgender

Gabel reveals plans to Rolling Stone to take the name Laura Jane Grace after undergoing gender transition. By Katie Byrne Tom Gabel of Against Me! Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Against Me! singer Tom Gabel has come out as transgender and discussed plans to begin living as a woman in the next issue of Rolling Stone. Gabel, who will go by Laura Jane Grace and remain married to wife Heather, will undergo electrolysis treatments and take hormones to make the transition from male to female. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” Gabel told Rolling Stone of Heather. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.” Gabel has dealt with gender dysphoria for years and decided it was a good time to speak up about the private struggle, telling only a few family members and friends about the upcoming transition before talking with the magazine. “I’m going to have embarrassing moments, and that won’t be fun,” Gabel said of coming out. “But that’s part of what talking to you is about — is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.” Though Gabel is the first major rock star to undergo a gender transformation, she’s hardly the first celebrity. Larry Wachowski, half of the Wachowski-brother directing duo behind the “Matrix” trilogy, has been credited as Lana Wachowki in recent work and seems to now identify as a woman, though neither sibling has spoken publicly on the subject. Chaz Bono, meanwhile, made a very public run on “Dancing With the Stars” as the first transgender contestant . Chaz, born the daughter of Cher and Sonny Bono, underwent female-to-male gender transition between 2008 and 2010. In the next issue of Rolling Stone, due Friday, Gabel will tell her full story, including what the revelation means for the future of Against Me! Related Artists Against Me!

No Doubt Return With New Album In September

‘Ear candy coming your way,’ band writes on its website about first album in 11 years. By John Mitchell No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani Photo: R. Mickshaw/ Getty Images/ Fox No Doubt have finally set the release date for their long -in-the-works sixth studio album, the band’s first in 11 years. The still-untitled set will drop September 25. “We are incredibly excited to share the new music with you. Ear candy coming your way,” the band wrote on its website . “Thank you all so much for your support over the last 25 years. We’re really proud of our new album and we hope you love it as much as we do.” The band began initial work on the album in March 2008, after Gwen Stefani wrapped the tour behind her second solo album, The Sweet Escape. Songwriting on the effort reportedly got off to a slow start because, according to a post from Stefani , she was distracted by her second pregnancy, though she was certain at the time that “this could be the most inspired No Doubt record so far.” Energized by being back together in the studio for the first time since recording 2001’s multiplatinum Rock Steady, the band decided to take a break from recording to hit the road for a wildly successful summer 2009 greatest-hits tour. The band reconvened at bassist Tony Kanal’s personal studio in Hollywood after the tour concluded and spent the majority of 2010 writing and carefully polishing several demos. In January 2011, No Doubt guitarist Tom Dupont posted a message letting fans know that the group transitioned to the Santa Monica studio of producer Mark “Spike” Stent, who also worked on Rock Steady, to officially begin tracking the effort. Last summer, Rolling Stone visited Stent’s studio and sampled several songs the band had recorded. Of the 12 tracks announced at that time, the magazine lavished particular affection on “Settle Down,” calling it a “party-ready reggae blast,” and “One More Summer,” which “updates the band’s ska-pop sound with pounding dance beats, arena-size guitars and a beyond-catchy chorus.” A month after Rolling Stone ‘s studio visit, in late July 2011, the band teamed up in the studio with Major Lazer , the recording name for hip-hop/dance producers Diplo and Switch (Usher, M.I.A., Beyonc

Her The Hunger Games co-star Josh Hutcherson says that the first time they met, she went on a ” 45-minute rant about zombies and the apocalypse “, and her X-Men: First Class co-star Zoe Kravitz has this little nugget to share: “I’d met her a few times, and she was like, ‘You should come over and we’ll hang out’…So I go over to her apartment, and she opens the door in a towel. She’s like, ‘Come in, sorry, you’re early, I was about to shower.’ And she drops her towel and gets in the shower, and starts shaving her legs, totally naked. She was like, ‘Are we here yet? Is this OK?’ And I was like, ‘I guess we’re there!'” Oh, we’re getting there all right. UPDATE: Now with video! See Jennifer SKIN motion after the jump!

Black Keys (Sort Of) Retract Nickelback Dis

‘There’s much worse bands than Nickelback. Maybe,’ drummer Patrick Carney said. By Gil Kaufman Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys Photo: Jakubaszek/ Getty Images The MTV Canada, they apologized to the Alberta-bred rockers … kind of. “I didn’t mean to single them out actually,” explained a laughing Carney. “It just came out. There’s much worse bands than Nickelback … maybe … That was the worst apology.” “That was terrible, man,” singer Dan Auerbach told his pal about his quarter-hearted mea culpa. Asked if perhaps they were just music snobs, Carney said no, but Auerbach admitted that perhaps he was. “I think I am probably, a little bit … I bet I am,” he said. “I don’t like bad music, but look, I’ve got a lot of friends and not one of them has a Nickelback record,” added Carney. “I’m not a small minority.” What was that he said about the worst apology ever? It got better, though. Without naming names this time, Carney elaborated that, “there are certain bands that make me embarrassed to be …” to which Auerbach chimed in, “human?” “On Earth,” Carney clarified. “Like, they make me actually want to take a spaceship away. I want to get that far away from them.” Carney realized his “apology” might not wash, so when the interviewer asked whether it might get awkward if the Keys run into Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger at an industry awards show or other official function, he said, “he’d probably punch us in the face. I wouldn’t talk to him.” Related Videos MTV First: The Black Keys’ ‘Gold On The Ceiling’ Related Artists The Black Keys
