Report: Samantha Barks, Not Taylor Swift, To Play Eponine in Les Miserables Movie

Taylor Swift may have been offered a role in Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables film, but has she recently been replaced? According to Broadway World , theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh, who is also producing Hooper’s film, announced onstage at a curtain call for Oliver! that stage actress Samantha Barks has been chosen to play Eponine — the role he cast her in for the 2010 25th anniversary Les Mis concert. Les Mis purists, you may exhale in 3, 2, 1… According to Broadway World, reports flew in from audience members in attendance: “He told the cast and audience that he had a big announcement to make before flying to America, and then revealed that Barks would be taking the role of Eponine. It seems to have come as a surprise to Barks – audience members reported that ‘the look on her face was priceless.'” The 21-year-old Barks competed on the 2008 BBC reality musical television show I’d Do Anything and played Eponine onstage multiple times previously in London, and she certainly knows the material (see below); she’ll be joining a cast that already includes Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Amanda Seyfried. There’s been no word yet on what happened with Swift and her camp, but Mackintosh’s grand gesture in front of a packed house at the Manchester Palace was a pretty public way to break the news. Oh, don’t you worry, Swifties. The busy warbler has a film coming out this year ( The Lorax ) and is bound to pick up another acting gig sooner or later. Taylor Swift In ‘Les Miserables’: Fans Weigh In

‘I hope she can pull it off,’ one fan tells MTV News. By Tami Katzoff Taylor Swift imagined in the role of Eponine in the Broadway version of “Les Miserables” Photo: Broadway/ MTV News Taylor Swift has reportedly been offered the role of Eponine in Tom Hooper’s new “Les Miserables” movie, beating out more established actors including Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood. Opinion on the street (Broadway, of course) is mixed. Pennsylvanian Molly Washok, 17, is very pleased with the prospect of seeing Swift as Eponine on the big screen. “I seriously love ‘Les Miz.’ It’s a great Broadway musical,” she said. “And I’ve seen Taylor Swift in shows and I love her so much. I’m a big fan of both, so it makes me excited.” Long Islander Katie Kendrick, 20, is also a fan of Ms. Swift but not as certain of her chops. “I love Taylor Swift — I bought her CDs, I have everything. But I’m not sure she’ll be able to hit those notes that Eponine hits in her songs,” Kendrick said. If she’s cast in “Les Miserables,” Swift will join a group of A-list actors that includes Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway. (Amanda Seyfried has reportedly been offered the role of Cosette.) Among these veterans, Kendrick noted, Swift would stand out as the novice. “Taylor Swift has only been in one movie and it was ‘Valentine’s Day,’ where she had a role for 10 minutes, tops. And all these other actors have been in numerous roles. They’re very well known in the acting industry while Taylor Swift is known in the singing industry,” she said. “I wish her luck, but I’m not sure she’ll be able to live up to the expectations that have been set previously.” Keely Kwok, 21, from Hamilton, Ontario, is willing to give Swift the benefit of the doubt. “She does have an incredible voice, I’ll give her that,” Kwok said. “It’s a really great musical, so I hope she can pull it off.” Twenty-one-year-old New Yorker Julia Menn was less diplomatic in her assessment of Swift’s credentials. “There are so many better people to play that part,” Menn said. “I’d prefer Evan Rachel Wood, actually. I think she’d be fantastic.” So would Menn see a Wood-less “Les Miserables” when it hits theaters this December? “Well, since Hugh Jackman’s in it, yes, I would.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Via AllHipHop.com : 50 Cent will star in a new action thriller movie titled “The Pursuit,” which will be directed by Jesse Terrero, who has also signed a three-picture deal with the rapper’s Cheetah Vision Films and Emmett/Furla Films. The movie centers around a cop and a criminal, who are teamed together by accident in pursuit of a bank robber who has crossed both men. During the movie, a U.S. Marshal hunts both men to prevent them from killingnthe escaped robber before he is brought back to justice. The movie, which is slated to begin production February 15th in Louisiana, is one of nine films the Cheetah Vision/Emmett Furla partnership will produce this year and one of the ten that will be distributed under a distribution deal with Lionsgate. Emmett / Furla is currently taking advantage of $250 million in funding to produce a slew of movies, including “Broken City” starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe and “Frozen Ground” starring John Cusak, Nicolas Cage and Vanessa Hudgens and others. ‘Man Of Steel’ Henry Cavill Reacts To Production Delay

At Comic-Con 2011, actor also tells MTV News about meeting Russell Crowe, his co-star in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Henry Cavill Photo: MTV News SAN DIEGO — Plenty of fans were surprised when news broke that the release date for Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, “Man of Steel,” was pushed back six months to June 14, 2013 — but none more so than the would-be superhero himself, Henry Cavill. “They broke it to me gently,” he told MTV News on Saturday (July 23) at San Diego Comic-Con. “I was just told the other day. It’s OK, it’s nothing to do with me. That’s stuff which I have no control over. I just focus on the character and do my job.” Speaking of stepping into the shoes of the iconic superhero — or tights, rather — Cavill said he’s “prepared enough” but anxious to start production. “I’m really raring to go,” he said. “It’s exciting, humbling, and about time to get started.” Of course, Cavill couldn’t divulge many details about the upcoming shoot or what his fellow cast members may or may not be doing in the film, but he did provide a delightful anecdote about his first meeting with co-star Russell Crowe (who is playing his father, Jor-El). Cavill recounted one of the very early days in his acting career when he worked as an extra in a film Crowe was shooting at his school. “I walked up to Russell, shook his hand, and said ‘I’m thinking of becoming an actor. What advice do you have?’ He said to me … No, I won’t say what he said,” Cavil said with a smile, indicating that his response might have included a swear word or two. “Two days later, I received an Aussie rugby jersey, a [CD] and a signed picture from ‘Gladiator’ [with a note that read] ‘Dear Henry, A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, Russell.’ Cut to 11 years later, at what is the high point of my career, and here we are.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Man of Steel.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . RZA Teases Unreleased ODB Material

‘When you got an estate, it’s so much paperwork and red tape and legal stuff you gotta deal with,’ Wu-Tang mastermind says of late friend’s music. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Adam Murphy RZA Photo: MTV News Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nothin’ ta eff wit, and neither are the RZA ‘s beats. While in Berlin promoting his new headphone line Chambers by Rza, the Wu producer told MTV News that he has given beats to a number of hip-hop artists, including Nas, Busta Rhymes and Ludacris, as well as his cousin and Wu-partner GZA for his Liquid Swords 2 album. “Me and GZA talked about doing Liquid Swords part 2, a sequel. We talked about it for a while,” RZA said about the follow-up to GZA’s 1996 album. “We actually started a little and then we pulled back based on scheduling, based on my movie.” RZA’s love affair with Hollywood is no secret. As an actor, Bobby Digital has appeared in “American Gangster” alongside Russell Crowe and has recently been cast in “G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes.” RZA has also been hard at work directing “The Man With the Iron Fists,” a movie set in feudal China which will star Russell Crowe, Pam Grier and Lucy Liu. “The movie has taken me out of the loop of music. But what I have been doing, I’ve been going to studios and inviting people to my studio. So I went to the studio with Luda and I emptied beats from my beat machine for him. Whether he use it or not is up to him, but I just been emptying out my beat machines,” RZA said before revealing more of his collaborative hopefuls. “I emptied out some beats on Busta, I emptied out some beats on Nas, emptied out some beats for [Ghostface Killah] and for Wu-Tang Clan — just sent them 20 beats a few weeks ago.” Though he is very passionate about making movies at the moment, RZA knows music is what got him where he is today. “I really want to put a lot of my energy into film, but I know that I got here because of music and I know people dig my music. And I’m like, ‘Why not put the music out there too?’ ” Judging from his activity, it is a safe bet that fans can hear a lot of new RZA music in the near future, but anyone expecting to hear collaborations between the producer and his cousin, the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, shouldn’t get their hopes up. While the Abbot does confirm that he has plenty of unreleased Ol’ Dirty material, releasing those tunes are quite difficult. “That’s a very tricky situation, because ODB has passed and he has an estate,” he said. “When you got an estate, it’s so much paperwork and red tape and legal stuff you gotta deal with. I tried to put out a song last year called ‘Dirt’s the Boogie,’ and they threatened me with an injunction and I wrote the lyrics to the song. Made the beat, wrote the lyrics and Dirty just performed it.” Instead of holding onto the work, though, RZA is contemplating leaving the unheard recordings to Dirty’s son when the time is right. “I will tell the fans, I do have a few 2-inch reels of material nobody has but me. I don’t know what I’ll do with it,” he said. “Maybe in time I’ll just give it to his son, I don’t know.” Do you want to hear RZA’s ODB tapes? Let us know in the comments!
