Sofia Coppola, Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning on Their Heartbreaking Film Somewhere

Sofia Coppola’s new film is called Somewhere , but its location is specific: the present-day, alienating Los Angeles. Stephen Dorff stars as Johnny Marco, an action star whose boozy, despondent life brightens when his 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) accompanies him abroad on a press tour for his insipid blockbuster Berlin Agenda . While Cleo’s sunny optimism reinvigorates Johnny, it also confronts him with how joyless — or is it worthless? — he feels without her. Somewhere proves that with spiritual awakening comes damning reflection, and Coppola again exhibits her knack for weary characters who discover their sensitivities are firmly intact. Movieline caught up with Coppola (who directed, wrote, and produced the film) and her two stars for an in-depth look at Somewhere ‘s characters, conflicts, and hilarious — and in one case, real — moments of Hollywood insanity.

What People Do for Oprah: Hugh Jackman Injured in Zipline Stunt

Oprah Winfrey is really enjoying her time in Australia. When she isn’t sailing around Sydney Harbour with close friend Russell Crowe — or shopping at local gift shops — she’s putting Hugh Jackman in grave danger. Well, not really: The Australian National Treasure received a cut above his right eye while taking part in a zipline-stunt-gone-bad at a taping of Oprah’s Ultimate Australian Adventure on Tuesday. “That was so much fun,” said Jackman, “until the end.” Let’s hope that isn’t one of the taglines for Real Steel . Click ahead to watch the unfortunate hilarity.

On DVD: Knight & Day, and Other Movie-Star Match-Ups That Underperformed

Like most Americans, I didn’t actually see the action-comedy-romance Knight & Day (out on DVD this week from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment) in theaters, but I never would have predicted that the teaming of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz would have led to one of the summer’s highest-profile box office bombs. ( Vanilla Sky notwithstanding.) But if pairing two popular movie stars were a guarantee of success, you’d see a lot more one-from-Column-A casting in Hollywood. Here’s a look at some other sure-fire pairings that wound up being anything but:

The seventh movie in the fantasy franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” opened with a fairy-tale figure of $125.1 million over the weekend. The flick powered through the past two days with stunning momentum, picking up $24 million at midnight screenings Friday and zooming to $61 million by the end of the day. The tally sets a record for the series, blasting through the previous “Harry Potter” opening-weekend, box-office benchmark of $102.7 million set by 2005’s “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” “Megamind” continued its comfortable fun in the top five, finishing the weekend in second place. The Will Ferrell and Tina Fey comedy about the antics of a CG supervillain rang up $16.2 million. The movie’s total estimated haul now stands at about $109 million. “Unstoppable,” arrived in third place. Audiences shelled out $13.1 million over the weekend to catch Denzel Washington and Chris Pine’s runaway-train thriller. The film’s tally now stands at around $42 million after its second weekend in theaters. “Due Date” wrapped up the weekend in fourth place. The comedic pairing of Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr. netted about $9.2 million, which bumps this film’s total gross to around $72 million. Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks’ jailbreak action flick, “The Next Three Days,” hit theaters in fifth place. Moviegoers plunked down around $6.8 million during the film’s debut weekend. Weekend Forecast: Harry Potter Ain’t Leaving Here Without His $130+ Million

Happy Friday! Time to get out of the house and face the next to last day you’ll ever have your face violently rubbed in the opening of a Harry Potter movie. REVIEW: Russell Crowe Tries to Roughen the Edges of The Next Three Days

Blood on a trench coat, a wholesome-seeming wife and mom behind bars, a spouse who’s devoted almost to the point of obsession: Paul Haggis’ marital thriller The Next Three Days has a lot going for it, including two appealing and extremely capable actors, Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks. The plot is worked out with care, and it takes its time, unapologetically, in a manner that’s perfectly suited to thinking adults. The whole enterprise reeks of class.
