I’m going to assume none of us learned anything from Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve other than, ” I was right to avoid New Year’s Eve .” Fortunately, there are real lessons to be gleaned from the best in New Year’s cinema, and we’ve lined up five movies with tips for your bash this weekend. Whether you’re ringing it in alone or spending it with the grimmest Vietnam vet on Earth, you’ll learn something valuable here. The Gold Rush : If you’re alone, you can envision a party that’s better than a real one. Charlie Chaplin’s iconic fork-and-roll dance from The Gold Rush is a fantasy sequence where the Little Tramp entertains guests who never show up to his place. Though the flatware choreography is cute, it’s hard not to look in Chaplin’s striking eyes during the entire sequence. But what a fabulous (and fictional) fete! The Apartment : Don’t pop a wine cork when your lady friend can mistake it for a gunshot. The Apartment is a treasure, but it’s also dour enough to put a damper on your New Year’s. Let’s revisit its best moment of pure levity and watch when Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine) ditches her party, realizes that C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) risked his job for her, and arrives at his apartment to deliver a few classic lines of dialogue — namely, before a rummy game, “Shut up and deal.” C.C.’s cork-popping could be better timed, though — as Fran rushes to his door, she receives a ghastly fright. The Godfather, Part II : Don’t reveal that you’re a traitor during festivities. Fredo Corleone (the late, great John Cazale) receives a grim kiss from his brother Michael (Al Pacino) upon revealing that he’s the traitor that Michael suspects he is. This leads to a classic line, “I know it was you, Fredo — you broke my heart,” which also served as the inspiration for the John Cazale documentary I Knew It Was You . Oh, New Years. What a perfectly inopportune time to expose your true character. Forrest Gump : Do not party with your bitter commanding officer from Vietnam. If we were focusing on Jenny’s New Year’s festivities in Forrest Gump , this tip might be titled, “Don’t kill yourself!” But we’re looking at Forrest (Tom Hanks) now, just as he exchanges glances with the resentful, abrasive Lt. Dan (Gary Sinise). It seems obvious, but please try not to ring in a new year with a disrespectful, not to mention emotionally battered comrade. Sex and the City : Find your most sensible, downtrodden friend and hole up with her in a glamorous apartment. I’m always a little baffled by the vitriol spewed at the first Sex and the City movie, which was truly no different — or better or worse — than the TV show. Here, in the movie’s most poignant scene, we watch as Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) sneak over to Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) place for a warm New Year’s. That sweeping, Celtic rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” helps too. Got other favorite New Year’s movie lessons? Drop ’em in the comments below! Follow Louis Virtel on Twitter . Following the failure to launch of her recent film I Don’t Know How She Does It , Sarah Jessica Parker has signed on as executive producer for her newest project, in which she may star: A Fair Marriage , a film that follows a woman in a six-year marriage who “rediscovers who she is, what she is capable of and how deep her love for her family runs — by becoming someone else.” Uh-oh. This sounds like the kind of inoffensive tripe that Sarah Jessica Parker has done to death in the past five years, the quirky, but down-to-Earth romance. Since it’s pretty clear that SJP could use a push in a new direction, let’s suggest three genres for which she’s better suited — even if it means she’s zapped in the alien apocalypse.

Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ follows at #2, with Ryan Gosling vehicle ‘Drive’ at #3. By Ryan J. Downey “Lion King 3-D” Photo: Disney What’s old was new again as Disney’s iconic “The Lion King” became the #1 movie at the box office over the weekend, taking in an estimated $29.3 million with a souped-up 3-D redo of the 1994 original. “Drive,” one of the year’s best-reviewed films, was #3 in its weekend debut, while the poorly reviewed remake of “Straw Dogs” and Sarah Jessica Parker’s even-worse-reviewed “I Don’t Know How She Does It” both flopped in their debuts. Last week’s #1 movie, “Contagion,” dropped to #2 this week. “The Lion King” 3-D re-release earned more than the other three new releases combined. The film’s original-run IMAX re-release (back in 2002) and the past weekend’s numbers pushed “The Lion King” from #25 to #17 on the all-time domestic box-office chart, according to Box Office Mojo . The animated tale, which has also quite successfully been adapted for Broadway, has made $357.8 million in the United States to date. Steven Soderbergh’s ensemble procedural drama “Contagion” made $14.5 million in its second weekend of release, for a total of $44.2 million. “Drive” took in $11 million, but while the film has set Twitter abuzz in critic circles, it remains to be seen how it will continue to play with a broader audience. “This is one of Ryan Gosling’s best performances,” Aisle Seat reported. “The Help” came in at #4 at the box office, adding $6.4 million for a total of $147.3 million. The remake of director Sam Peckinpah’s 1971 thriller “Straw Dogs,” featuring “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsg

In addition to Ryan Gosling’s Drive , a couple of other films opened with much fanfare this weekend. But should you rush out to see either? Movie Fanatic examines: In I Don’t Know How She Does It , Sarah Jessica Parker stars as Kate, a wife and mother of small kids with a flourishing career that leads to the title question. Audiences’ question will be: Is it worth a trip to the theater? Debatable, given that the film has basically been done before with various incarnations and stars. I Don’t Know How She Does It Trailer Straw Dogs , a new spin on the 1971 film starring Dustin Hoffman and now featuring James Marsden in the driver’s seat, continues Hollywood’s remake trend. But is it a remake that even needed to be made? Despite powerful visuals and the efforts of Marsden and Alexander Skarsgard, both of whom turn in fine performances, the film falls short at times as well. With plot elements seen a mile away, and a conclusion that seemed out of left field, perhaps the original Sam Peckinpah classic should have been left alone.

We’re sure plenty of y’all feel her pain, riiiiight? While doing promo interviews for “I Don’t Know How She Does It,” Sarah Jessica Parker admitted that matrimony-dom is no joke and that she allots a “few” minutes a day to hate on her hubby of 14 years Matthew Broderick. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest on his KISS FM breakfast show SJP addressed comments she made earlier this month about allowing herself moments of rage. She replied: “I think that’s healthy and I think it’s realistic. Some people have it down to 20 minutes a week. Other unfortunate people have it down to 20 minutes per hour.” But Sarah Jessica says she doesn’t always use up her quota. “In my life, we go many, many days without 20 minutes of bitterness,” she says. The Hollyweird couple has three children, James Wilkie, 8, and two-year-old twins Marion and Tabitha. So what do y’all think? Is it healthy to hate your spouse on the daily? Or are SJP and Matthew headed toward divorce court? Source

I don’t know how Sarah Jessica Parker does it, but a lot of her movies are staggering shit fortresses. Failure to Launch ? Did You Hear About the Morgans ? This weekend’s I Don’t Know How She Does It ? The Family Stone ? That movie made me feel like Diane Keaton’s cancer, and it’s still a Mensa candidate compared to today’s Bad Movie We Love: the epic, Tropical Skittle-colored trek to Abu Dhabi, Sex and the City 2 . It’s so famously bad that its bad reviews are famous. It’s the movie that asks the question, “How can we save a franchise that has devolved into materialistic fetishism?” and answers it with, “JEWELS.” Cheers, girls!

In this week’s new chick flick I Don’t Know How She Does It , Sarah Jessica Parker — she who had sex in the city, a bastion of modern female fabulosity and our generation’s go-to, couture-sheathed screen heroine in heels — attempts to solve the plight of the 21st century woman once more as Kate Reddy, a wife, mother of two, and financial analyst for a high-powered investment firm trying desperately to juggle “it all.” How many times do co-workers and colleagues ask her how she “does it?” A lot. That’s how much she’s doing. But it’s not the first time SJP’ s put her plucky feminine know-how to use in the movies to solve the routine problems of the modern woman.

A Guide to Exactly How Sarah Jessica Parker Does It in Every Chick Flick
I really didn’t want to post these pictures of Sarah Jessica Parker , she’s really not attractive and her movies make old chicks think they’re sexy, but I’ve got to admit she’s actually looking pretty good. Obviously not her face, I haven’t completely lost my mind, I’m talking exclusively about her body. Maybe it’s the dress, maybe it’s the fact that she knows that more romantic lead roles for a woman her age are fading fast, or maybe she’s looking to cheat on her bloated Ferris Bueller of a husband, we’ll never know. Whatever it is, it has really done a number on her figure, and I like it. Well done lady.
