Contradictions Pile Up Around Vanity Fair’s Palin Hit Piece

Vanity Fair writer Michael Joseph Gross has already admitted to one error in his  profile of Sarah Palin , but the contradictions and controversies surrounding his hit piece continue to stack up. In a Sept. 7  post on The Corner , Katrina Trinko “refudiated” Gross’s characterization of Palin as vicious, vengeful, and fake. Unlike Gross’s sources, almost all of which were anonymous, Trinko provided citations. Gross had cited “people who know” suggesting Palin’s relationship with close friends Kristan Cole and Kris Perry had “deteriorated.” But Cole reportedly told Trinko the charge was “absolutely not true. I don’t know where they get this stuff from, honestly.” A former Palin aide, Ivy Frye, also contradicted Gross’s characterization that she parted ways with Palin “on bad terms.” “I didn’t leave on ‘bad terms,'” she said in a statement. “Gross’ 8 page hit piece is a complete work of fiction from beginning to end.” Gross recently admitted to misreporting the profile’s opening story – in which he had originally suggested Palin was using her son, Trig, who has Down syndrome, to gain political sympathy. The child he’d seen was the son of Palin’s friend Gina Loudon. “This was a mistake, and I regret the error,” Gross wrote  in a statement . But the story posted on Vanity Fair’s website makes no note of the retraction. The  original story appears unedited. Gross had previously defended his work by telling MSNBC “Morning Joe” hosts that, “I have a lot in common with this woman.” Elsewhere in his “Morning Joe” interview, Gross also called Palin “a person for whom there is no topic too small to lie about” and said, “She lies  about everything.” Maybe they’re not so different after all. 3 Sketches Amy Poehler Should Revive in her SNL Hosting Gig

Have you enjoyed SNL Day at Movieline? Look, it was an accident. We can’t help that there’s much to discuss about Jenny Slate’s departure , Lorne Michaels’ new hires , the greatest one-season cast members , and now Amy Poehler’s season premiere hosting gig. The Parks and Recreation star’s return to Studio 8H will no doubt be a successful one, but it could be sublime if she revived these three sketches.

WaPo’s Marcus: Palin Is Homophobic for Calling Reporters Limp and Impotent

The lengths liberals will go to trash Sarah Palin knows no bounds. On Friday, the Washington Post’s Ruth Marcus actually accused the former Alaska governor of being homophobic for calling reporters “limp” and “impotent.” As NewsBusters reported Thursday, Palin, while on Sean Hannity’s radio program the day before, bashed “impotent, limp and gutless reporters [that] take anonymous sources and cite them as being factual references.” From this, Marcus divined the following utter nonsense : The Vanity Fair writer, Michael Joseph Gross, is gay, which makes matters worse — conjuring the stereotype of “limp-wristed.” But whatever the sexual orientation of the offending reporter, Palin should not have been questioning his manhood. There are sexist aspects to the commentary about Palin, as with other female politicians. Sometimes sexism is imagined or overplayed; sometimes it is real and deserves to be called out. A new campaign, Name It, Change It, has been launched to expose such episodes. Fine, but women politicians have to keep to the high road if they don’t want men making fun of their high heels. Impotent and limp? No male politician accused a female reporter of being hormonal or frigid. To begin with, Palin never mentioned Vanity Fair or Gross’s name, nor did Hannity. In fact, their discussion about the media was precipitated by the former Alaska governor saying how poorly written a recent CQ Politics piece about her was. As such, it’s a stretch on Marcus’s part to claim Palin was specifically talking about Gross. Beyond this, how would Palin know Gross was gay? Until I read Marcus’s piece, I didn’t know that.  Did Marcus herself learn this from the gay and lesbian publication Advocate.com which published the following editorial Thursday: Is Sarah Palin using code words to slam gay journalist Michael Joseph Gross, a frequent Advocate contributor who wrote the much-buzzed-about profile of the former vice presidential nominee in this month’s Vanity Fair? Palin didn’t mention Gross by name while talking Thursday on Sean Hannity’s WABC radio show, but she seemed to be referring to the article – and pointedly used emasculating words that have long been used as euphemisms for homosexuality – when she called reporters who publish “rumors” about her “impotent,” “limp,” and “gutless.” So, a gay and lesbian publication made this accusation Thursday, and Marcus decided to echo it at the Washington Post the following day. This now officially puts Marcus in the same category as MSNBC’s Ed Schultz who last month said Palin was sexist for suggesting Barack Obama lacked cojones when it comes to illegal immigration. Attagirl, Ruth! That’ll help you get that Pulitzer Prize you’ve always wanted.

Obama Campaign Manager: Limbaugh, Beck and Palin a Problem for GOP

Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign manager on Sunday said Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin are currently the leaders of the Republican Party, and this represents a long-term problem for the GOP. Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” David Plouffe was asked about a number of questions facing the nation as well as the President he helped get elected. Apparently feeling the need to do some conservative bashing, host Gregory asked Plouffe about a section from his book “Audacity to Win” dealing with Limbaugh, Beck, and Palin. This set the Obama adviser up nicely to go after targets liberals just love to hate (video follows with transcript and commentary):  DAVID GREGORY, HOST: Finally, a quote from your book, handicapping the Republican field, this is what you write in the new part of “Audacity to Win.” “This is the Republican Party of 2010, and I think it will be the Republican Party for a long time. It is hard to see how a Republican gets the presidential nomination without winning the plurality of the Palin-Limbaugh-Beck base of the Republican Party. Without a drastic change in orientation, they will probably nominate someone a good bit out of the mainstream.” Who do you have in mind? Who do you think is the most formidable Republican likely to challenge President Obama? DAVID PLOUFFE: Oh, I have no idea. I mean, this time four years ago there was very few of us talking about Barack Obama running for president, including me. So I think some of the people that we think are going to run may not run. There’ll be other people who’ll run. We’ll see. I wish I could just sit back with a tub of popcorn and, and enjoy it because I think it’s going to be quite an adventure. MR. GREGORY: But who is the leader of the Republican Party, would you say? MR. PLOUFFE: I think the–I think right now–and this is a problem for them long term–I do think that Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, they are the leaders of the party. And you see whenever–I was struck by–Senator Coburn from Oklahoma, I think, was at a town hall meeting and said, “I don’t agree with anything the Democrats are doing, and I don’t agree with Speaker Pelosi, but she’s a nice person,” and got attacked for that. There, there is an intolerance in that party and an extremism that I think is where the real energy is. And so I think, as you see in ’11 and ’12, as that presidential primary, those are the people that are going to come out to vote. So I think that’s where the real energy is, and I think particularly in, in elections where more people vote, in presidential elections where you have a lot more younger people, minorities, independent voters who skew a little bit more moderate, that’s going to be a big problem. So we’ll just have to wait and see. But let’s get this–through this election first, and then we’ll be right on to the next one. It truly is fascinating the left and their media minions continue to bash Limbaugh, Beck, and Palin. After all, with the possible exceptions of Obama and the Clintons, there aren’t any other liberal political figures in this nation that come close to the popularity and visibility of these three conservatives. As such, suggesting that they represent a problem for Republicans is like saying ground beef and potatoes are bad for McDonalds. Regardless, Gregory just couldn’t resist giving his guest the opportunity to attack three of the nation’s most well-known conservatives. As the jingle goes, “If it’s Sunday…”

Vanity Fair Reporter Admits Error In Sarah Palin Hit Piece

For almost two years, Sarah Palin has been complaining about media members making things up about her. On Friday, one finally admitted it. As NewsBusters reported Wednesday, Vanity Fair’s October issue has a hit piece on its cover about the former Alaska governor that Palin-hating press members have been predictably fawning and gushing over. Now, the Associated Press is reporting that the author, Michael Joseph Gross, has admitted making a mistake in his piece: Reporter Michael Joseph Gross describes Palin’s youngest son, Trig, being pushed in a stroller by his older sister, Piper, before a rally in May in the Kansas City suburb of Independence. “When the girl, Piper Palin, turns around, she sees her parents thronged by admirers, and the crowd rolling toward her and the baby, her brother Trig, born with Down syndrome in 2008,” according to the article. “Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, bend down and give a moment to the children; a woman, perhaps a nanny, whisks the boy away; and Todd hands Sarah her speech and walks her to the stage.” Later in his piece, Gross described Piper joining Sarah on stage to “allow Palin to make a public display of maternal affection.”  Unfortunately, as Politico’s Ben Smith reported Thursday, that was a different Down syndrome baby: Trig wasn’t at the event, according to its organizer, Karladine Graves, a 61-year-old Kansas City physician, who, in 2009, founded one of the wave of new local conservative groups, this one called Preserving American Liberty. The “woman, perhaps a nanny,” was the boy’s mother, St. Louis talk radio host Gina Loudon, according to Graves. But it gets worse according to the AP: The mother of that child, conservative activist Gina Loudon, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that she told Gross during the rally that the child in the stroller was her son, not Palin’s. She said she tried to make it clear because the two children look a lot alike. “I told him that. And he ignored it,” Loudon said. “It’s not even like he didn’t fact check – he just ignored facts.” Now, Gross has admitted it: Gross said in a written statement sent to The Associated Press that he was mistaken. “Trig was with his mother the next day in Wichita (Kan.), but the child in Independence was someone else, and I regret the error,” he said. He regrets the error? No he doesn’t. He regrets getting caught, for as Smith wrote Thursday, this has been a modus operandi for dishonest media members like Gross for two years: [T]he Vanity Fair piece on Sarah Palin is so emblematic of much that’s wrong about the way she’s covered that it’s worth returning to, and I’ve learned that the its long wind-up is based on fundamental confusion about which of Palin’s children was at an event in Kansas City. Palin almost never talks to neutral media outlets, leaving her – as critics accurately note – subject to none of the questions, challenges  and reality checks that the political press puts regularly to almost every other national political figure. She takes a lot of heat for this, deservedly. But with the hunger for information about her, and the traffic she drives, the press sometimes compensates by printing such thinly sourced, badly reported nonsense about her that it’s hard to imagine it making it into a serious magazine like Vanity Fair if it concerned any other figure. Of course, this might not happen if she spoke to reporters, but that’s no excuse. Yeah it is, Ben, for what’s the point of talking to the press if they’re going to just make stuff up? Of course, this is the kind of yellow journalism by “impotent, limp, gutless reporters” Palin ridiculed while chatting with Sean Hannity Wednesday, and is why it’s difficult to believe any of the nonsense about her in the media. Vanity Fair should be so proud of itself.

A Personal Tribute to Sean Hannity

A popular phrase among the political left these days is “I support the troops… but.” But what? You either support the troops or you don’t support the troops. If you really support the troops you want to see them pursue a winning strategy in whatever war they’re fighting and come home to a grateful country. That’s whether you agree with the politics involved or not. The military does not start wars and are rarely left to their own devices when it comes to the fighting of one, but some in the media always want to paint our military with the blackest paint available, magnifying the smallest negative and ignoring the most positive. There are however a few highly influential anomalies in that equation and none more dedicated to the sincere and unconditional support of our men and women in uniform than Sean Hannity. Sean’s support for the military is born from a deep and abiding love for America, he is a straight ahead patriot who chops the logs of contention and lets the chips fly, making no apology for where they land. There is no wavering in approach, no wandering off the path to curry favor from one side or the other, no breath of political correctness here, just a man with a common sense approach to the problems that confront America and a willingness to stand alone for his beliefs if it’s necessary. Each week Sean does five three-hour radio shows and five one-hour television shows, each one requiring research and preparation, not to mention the numerous speeches and other public appearances he makes. Yet with all this hectic schedule, Sean Hannity devotes his summer family vacation time to do the Freedom Concert Tour, a coast-to-coast concert series to support the Freedom Alliance, an organization founded by Ollie North, which insures that the children of those who gave their lives or became 100% disabled in the military service of this nation, will be able to get a college education. In addition to devoting several weeks of his and his family’s lives to raising money for this tremendously worthy cause, he has personally given in excess of a million dollars to it. Our troops and their families love Sean Hannity, and with good reason. He is and always has been in their corner; no matter what the political climate or the mood of the country. He realizes that without our military there would be no America. Politicians and pundits sway with the winds of change, but Sean Hannity stands tall for what he believes in and America is a better place for it. Sean Hannity, I love you. May God bless and keep you. Sarah Palin Bashes ‘Impotent, Limp, Gutless Reporters’ That Use Anonymous Sources to Attack Her

Sarah Palin on Wednesday went after impotent, limp, gutless reporters that quote anonymous sources to attack her. Chatting with conservative talk radio host Sean Hannity about a number of subjects, the former Alaska governor was asked how she handles all the negative press she gets.  “I hear there’s some pretty ugly stuff right now coming out and what we predict, we always see a pattern,” Palin said. In her view, much of it now stems from the success of political candidates she’s supportng. “I don’t read some of it because…impotent, limp and gutless reporters take anonymous sources and cite them as being factual references” (YouTube audio follows with partial transcript, relevant section at 4:00, h/t Right Scoop ): SEAN HANNITY, HOST: I love when you say, “Lamestream media.” It cracks me up. You know, one of the things, I don’t think there’s ever a time that they don’t distort what you say or what you’re involved in or what’s going on in your life. I mean, this has pretty much become par for the course for you. I mean, do you just let it roll off you like water from a duck’s back? Does any of this ever bother you? SARAH PALIN: I hear there’s some pretty ugly stuff right now coming out and what we predict, we always see a pattern. We’ve got some victories under the belt. Things are, things are going well, and then, then there is that public slam of us. So, we always expect what’s coming. I don’t read some of it because I know that those that are impotent and limp and gutless, and then they go on, they’re anonymous, they’re sources that are anonymous, and impotent, limp and gutless reporters take anonymous sources and cite them as being factual references. You know, it just slays me because it’s so absolutely clear what the state of yellow journalism is today that they would take these anonymous sources as fact. So, when a story especially is filled with those and we know it’s bogus and we’re not going to read it.

Left Frantically Spins Discovery Shooter’s Radical Environmentalism – Will MSM Follow Suit?

Police just raided the Discovery Channel headquarters, where a man had taken hostages, and was apparently demanding that the channel air radical environmental propaganda. The man, James Jay Lee, pictured right, was reportedly shot and killed . Though most of the details remain unclear, one fact is quickly coming into sharp focus: the left will be working overtime in the next few days to spin this event any way they can. It began with this astoundingly dishonest Think Progress headline: ” Purported Eco-Terrorist Angered Over ‘Immigration Pollution And Anchor Baby Filth’ ” That’s right, of Lee’s thousand-word manifesto in which he stated his demands of Discovery, Think Progress chose to highlight not the radical, militant environmentalism he espoused, but rather an obscure claim (in terms of overall message and word count) that immigrants to developed nations make the pollution situation worse. Notably, Think Progress thought it was worth comparing Lee’s position on this single issue to other groups that have made similar claims, but did not see fit to liken him groups of environmental activists who also think overpopulation is the problem (Tom Friedman, please call your office). Lee also said war was bad for the environment. Will Think Progress condemn anti-war groups that make similar claims? Conservative bloggers predicted this line of attack since before it even emerged. Patterico pontificated : “They’ll find a way to label him a right-winger – or at least a Tea Partier. Somehow.” Indeed. Ace chimed in with his prediction: “You know how the media will report this, right? That’s right: Anti-immigration extremist.” Give the man a cigar. But while it’s hardly a surprise that the far-left is spinning the story as hard as they can, the question remains: will liberal journalists who often rip stories from Think Progress repeat this bogus line? Will even the mainstream media pick up on this blatantly dishonest meme, and play up the immigration aspect while ignoring the larger message of environmental extremism? For the media, the event is a bit of a role-reversal. Journalists who purported that militias or other perpetrators or advocates of violence against the government were products of a conservative/libertarian attitude embodied by the Tea Party movement are now put in the awkward position of having to apply that same logic to Lee and his radical environmentalism. By the same line of argument, pundits who relentlessly push the notion that human beings are responsible for the impending apocalypse due to their refusal to moderate their population or change their lifestyles are responsible, at least in part, for today’s violence. The media may also choose to simply ignore the environmental aspect and focus on his immigration views, employing the same logic it has used to condemn the Tea Party movement. We will see. You can help NB monitor media coverage of the situation. If you think you see bias at work, leave a note and link in the comments.

Ebert: To Not Publicly Declare Obama Is Not a Muslim Is a ‘Crime Against America’

When you think of crimes against America, crimes so dangerous they strike out against the very existence of the country, what comes to mind? Espionage, terrorism, and treason perhaps top the list. But what about not publicly declaring that Barack Obama is in fact not a Muslim? Liberal Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger “Save the Republic from Palin” Ebert made a federal case out of the latter in a September 1 blog post entitled “Put up or shut up” (emphasis mine): The time is here for responsible Americans to put up or shut up. I refer specifically to those who have credibility among the guileless and credulous citizens who have been infected with notions so carefully nurtured. We cannot afford to allow the next election to proceed under a cloud of falsehood and delusion. We know, because they’ve said so publicly, that George W. Bush, his father and Sen. John McCain do not believe Obama is a Muslim. This is the time — now, not later — for them to repeat that belief in a joint statement. Other prominent Republicans such as Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul also certainly do not believe it. They have a responsibility to make that clear by subscribing to the statement. Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh must join, or let their silence indict them. Limbaugh in particular must cease his innuendos and say, flat out, whether he believes the President is a Muslim or not. Yes or no. Does he have evidence, or does he have none? Yes or no. To do anything less at this troubled time in our history would be a crime against America.
