Saturday Night Video: We Take Care Of Our Own

Black Keys Talk Lana Del Rey’s Overnight Success

Duo also address their own critics tonight on MTV.com following the ‘Gold on the Ceiling’ video premiere at 7:54 p.m. on MTV. By James Montgomery The Black Keys Photo: MTV News On January 8, 2011 — nearly a decade after they first started kicking around in Akron, Ohio — the Black Keys made their first appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” Needless to say, it was a pretty big moment for Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, who had spent no small portion of the past 10 years grinding out miles (and shows) in their van. On January 14, 2012 — nearly six months after she first became a much-debated blog curio — Lana Del Rey performed on the same “SNL” stage . It was a pretty big moment, too, though mostly for her critics and those who enjoy deriding the current state of popular music. After all, they argue, it’s debatable whether Del Rey has ever seen the inside of a van, let alone toured in one. So when MTV News sat down with the Black Keys in Berlin — for an exclusive interview you can watch tonight (February 6) on MTV.com, following the MTV premiere of the duo’s new “Gold on the Ceiling” video at 7:54 p.m. ET — we had to ask them for their thoughts on Del Rey’s overnight success, and what it meant for bands trying to make a living in 2012. “On some level, we’ve seen that Lana Del Rey thing since we first started, like, all of a sudden this new band would be headlining festivals, and we’re like, ‘Wait, how did they get that? We’ve been here for two, three, four, five years and we’re still working our way up,’ ” Auerbach said. “But then they’re gone. Just as quickly as they get up there, they disappear.” “It’s different for everybody. It took us a really long time to get on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and it took her a shorter amount of time,” Carney added. “But I honestly feel bad for a lot of bands that are starting out with the way things are. … The trends kind of flip over so fast — something’s cool and not cool and it all happens within two to three months.” Of course, it bears mention that the same outlets that have criticized Del Rey for her perceived lack of authenticity and quick rise to a major-label deal are the very same outlets that have largely ignored (or largely ripped) the Black Keys, a band that has spent a decade making the slow climb to the top. And when it came to that point, well, the Keys didn’t exactly hide their displeasure. “Yeah, [it’s] ’cause they’re pricks,” Carney snorted. “It’s like, ‘What the f— are you talking about, motherf—er?’ ” And though you’ll hear more of their thoughts on the media during our full interview, you can reasonably assume that the Black Keys don’t take criticisms kindly. In fact, they’ve been taking mental notes, and someday they’ll even the score. Don’t miss the premiere of the Black Keys’ “Gold on the Ceiling” video tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an in-depth chat with the band on MTV.com. ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Trailer Explodes Into Super Bowl

Channing Tatum tells MTV News the sequel is ‘wildly different.’ By Christina Garibaldi Channing Tatum Photo: MTV News Super Bowl Sunday: A time for an intense football matchup, million-dollar commercials and for movie studios to show off what blockbuster flicks they have in store for the rest of the year. Paramount Pictures was banking on fans being ready for the next installment of “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” when it presented the trailer to the more than 111 million people expected to tune into the game Sunday night (February 5). The thirty-second Super Bowl spot for “Retaliation” hit the web Wednesday, featuring intense ninja swordfights, a revamped Cobra Commander, Snake Eyes’ exploding motorcycle and, of course, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and a machine-gun shooting Bruce Willis . Yet, there was one thing noticeably missing: Channing Tatum . Tatum, who plays Duke, only appeared in the first trailer a handful of times, and with no appearances in the short Super Bowl clip, speculation is growing that he might be making an early exit from the Jon Chu-directed flick. MTV News caught up with Tatum at the set of “Saturday Night Live” as he geared up to host the show for the very first time, and he revealed he has yet to see the new “Retaliation” trailer, but hopes fans are ready for an action-packed sequel. “I hope they like it better than the first one. I think it’s wildly different,” Tatum said. “Jon Chu: I really do think he’s got his finger on the pulse of the hip younger generation. He did the ‘Step Up’s and what not, so I’ve got to work with him before. I think he’s got a really hip vibe to him.” So now that Tatum has probably recovered from his stint as host on “SNL,” we imagine he tuned in Sunday to catch the “Retaliation” trailer. Which team will he be rooting for during the game: the New York Giants or the New England Patriots? “I just really want it to be a good game. Neither one of them are my teams, but I don’t really have a pro team,” he admitted. “It’s always a bummer when the last game of the season is a landslide, so I want it to go into overtime and be the craziest game ever, but I don’t know how you can compete with the last three games; I don’t know how you keep going. The law of averages will probably say it’s not going to be as good of a game.” What did you think of the “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” trailer? Let us know in the comments! Channing Tatum ‘Nervous’ To Host ‘Saturday Night Live’

‘They really set you up to succeed,’ Tatum tells MTV News of ‘SNL’ cast. By Christina Garibaldi Channing Tatum Photo: Getty Images This year is shaping up to be a huge one for Channing Tatum . With five movies set for release in 2012 — the next being “The Vow” with Rachel McAdams on February 10 — it’s makes sense that Tatum is about to reach a pretty big milestone in his career: hosting “Saturday Night Live” for the first time, alongside musical guest Bon Iver. MTV News caught up with star during rehearsals on the “SNL” set, where he seemed to be a little anxious taking on his newest role as host. “I’m more nervous then I could probably tell you,” Channing admitted. “It happened so sort of constant and fast, you don’t really get a chance to think about it all too much. Like, you go home, you think and think and think, then you pass out and your alarm goes off, and then you come and do it again.” The “SNL” cast is trying to put Tatum’s nerves at ease. “They take care of you so much, so they really set you up to succeed,” he said. “Everyone is so at the top of their game as far as writing and acting, and this is a machine like I’ve never seen before. I wish movies ran this efficient; we would make them better.” Tatum, who revealed that his favorite past “SNL” castmembers are Dan Aykroyd and Chris Kattan, got some unusual advice on what he should do Saturday night from onetime host Kelly Ripa. “She said to put Vaseline on my teeth because she said your mouth goes dry when you say your name and your lips are stuck to your teeth,” Channing said. “If I can remember it, I’ll do it, but maybe I’ll Vaseline the lips instead of the teeth.” Are you excited to see Channing Tatum host “Saturday Night Live”? Lana Del Rey Performs on The Late Show, Does Not Suck

Lana Del Rey set the bar very low for herself on Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago. It may have been an embarrassing setback for the singer – whose debut album dropped on January 31 – but there’s this silver lining on that cloud of stiff singing: at least the burgeoning star can’t ever do worse again. She proved that last night on The Late Show with David Letterman , belting out a rendition of “Video Games” and showing serious improvement. Watch Del Rey in action now and decide: will you purchase her CD? Lana Del Rey – Video Games (The Late Show with David Letterman)

Will Forte on Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie: It Doesn’t Get Much Nuttier

Movieline caught up with Will Forte this week in Park City, where he was at Sundance to support Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim’s absurdist midnight offering Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie . In the film, Forte plays the uptight, moustachioed owner of a sword store in a mall that bumbling filmmakers Tim and Eric have taken over following the epic failure of their brush with Hollywood. Forte compared the more restricted sensibilities of his gig on Saturday Night Live to working within the madcap, surrealist stylings of the cult duo. Forte, like Billion Dollar Movie co-stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, also appeared on Heidecker and Wareheim’s Adult Swim sketch show Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! He recalled his first time on the series, filming a bit called the Lazy Horse Mattress Ad. “I just did exactly what Tim and Eric asked me to do — that was the first time I ever worked with these guys, and it was the best experience,” Forte remembered. “It was so fun, because it’s this advertisement for a mattress store and in between there’s this crazy dream, and for the crazy dream part they just turned the camera on and said ‘Go nuts for a while!’” “They’d turn the camera off for four or five minutes, say ‘Try this, do this here…’ They were so good about giving you direction but also giving you a ton of freedom. It was one of the best times I’ve ever had – it was so therapeutic to just be able to go nuts for a while. You don’t get to do that very often.” His more famous gig on Saturday Night Live , on the other hand, is understandably a much different process. “I love SNL , but it’s different. It’s got to be structured because it’s a live show, so the director needs to know what you’re going to do so he can capture it best; you can go nuts on that show, but it’s a different type of nuts.” As for Billion Dollar Movie , Forte is just one of a number of zany characters populating the first Tim and Eric feature, and while his part is plenty absurd, it’s nowhere near the most bizarre or random bit in the film. (Just wait ‘til you find out what shrim is, folks.) “I’ve always been a fan of the nuttier stuff,” Forte enthused, “and you don’t get much nuttier than Tim and Eric – I mean that as a major compliment.” Sundance audiences didn’t quite know what to make of Billion Dollar Movie ; even crew members admitted to Movieline that you’re either a Tim & Eric fan, or you may not get their brand of random, hyper-ridiculous comedy. Still, if the film is a success, Heidecker told me, they’d possibly explore a prequel – Tim and Eric’s Million Dollar Movie , perhaps? [Photo: Getty Images] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Lana Del Ray Struggles Through Saturday Night Live Performance [Video]

Poor Lana Del Ray. The singer seems perfectly nice, and she clearly has some talent, but the artist was overwhelmed on her Saturday Night Live debut yesterday, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot during a rendition of “Video Games,” randomly rubbing her hip, lacking any and all energy or emotion. Del Ray mumbled in to the microphone and rushed through her lyrics, as the faces of her backup band members even look horrified on her behalf. See the trainwreck for yourself and join us in wishing Lana better luck next time. If there is a next time for her, that is… Lana Del Ray SNL Performance

Lana Del Rey Says ‘Saturday Night Live’ Gig Not A ‘Fluke’

‘I may not have a record out now, but I have been singing for a very long time,’ Del Rey tells critics who argue she hasn’t earned ‘SNL’ slot. By James Montgomery Lana Del Rey Within the span of six months, Lana Del Rey has risen from a much-discussed blog curio to a major-label recording artist with an anticipated disc ( Born to Die, due at the end of the month) waiting in the wings. It’s the kind of leap few have made, one that’s led many to question whether she deserves so much so quickly. This weekend, she’ll perform on “Saturday Night Live,” the kind of gig usually reserved for the biggest of the big — and, yes, those same critics have already expressed their displeasure over that fact. So when Del Rey stopped by the MTV Newsroom earlier this week to discuss her meteoric climb, we asked about the backlash over her “SNL” performance. Not surprisingly, she had plenty to say on the matter. “I definitely think it’s an honor. … I don’t think they’ve ever had anyone [perform] who didn’t even have a record out, so I do appreciate it,” she said. “[But I got it] because I’m a good musician. And I may not have a record out now, but I have been singing for a very long time, and I think that [‘SNL’ creator] Lorne [Michaels] knows that, and everyone over there knows that. It’s not a fluke decision. “It’s not a traditional choice for ‘Saturday Night Live,’ especially because the content of the record is different; it’s not pop,” she continued. “But they’re also having … Bon Iver, so again, not the most traditional choice.” Though she’s aware there will be plenty of folks watching her Saturday, Del Rey remains rather unfazed by the whole thing. In fact, she doesn’t care what her critics have to say, and she’s not interested in debating whether she’s paid her dues. To be honest, she’s just focused on not screwing up royally. “You just think to yourself, ‘Don’t f— up.’ And that’s it. That’s all you ever think with live television. You hope that it goes well, and I’m just going to put my dress on, there’s going to be a spotlight, I got this amazing band I’ve worked with this year, they’ll be there,” she said. “I don’t even know what I’m singing yet. I’m singing ‘Video Games,’ and I don’t know what the second song is. … A lot of it depends on what’s going on with my family and everyone around me. If I have other things to think about, and I’m not in my own way, it doesn’t really matter. Sometimes it seems more important to me than others.” Will you watch Lana Del Rey on “SNL”?
