Nicki Minaj To Perform On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Jesse Eisenberg will host the January 29 episode; Linkin Park and Dana Carvey lined up for February 5 show. By James Dinh Nicki Minaj Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj has been tapped as the musical guest for an upcoming episode of “Saturday Night Live.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Young Money MC will join “Social Network” star Jesse Eisenberg, who will serve as host, for the show’s January 29 broadcast. THR also reported that Linkin Park will perform during the February 5 episode, which is set to feature hosting duties from former “SNL” castmember Dana Carvey. Known for her out-of-the-box fashion and manic rhymes, Minaj will likely perform her new single, “Moment 4 Life,” featuring Drake, as she brought the tune to her appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” earlier this week. Eisenberg’s and Minaj’s upcoming appearance marks the first time for both on the sketch show. “SNL” isn’t the only treat Minaj has up her sleeve for her fans. Minaj recently teamed up with Rihanna to shoot the music video for another one of the MC’s new singles, “Fly.” When E! News asked about the concept for the upcoming clip, Nicki remained tight-lipped, saying, “We’re going to save the world in more ways than one with the video, and that’s all I can say about that.” However, it was the duo’s TwitPics that sent the Internet ablaze when rumors circulated that Nicki and Rihanna were living together . The MC took to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to clear the air. “I don’t know where people got this really insane, hilarious, random rumor that she and I were living together,” she said. “We just shot the video for a song I have on the album I have called ‘Fly,’ and when I saw her, the first thing I said was, ‘So, did you hear we’re living together?’ and we just started cracking up laughing. She was like, ‘Yo, I can’t believe that people are, like, this ridiculous. So we Twit-Pic’d ourselves, and she put it on Twitter and said ‘Me and Nicki at our new pad’ or something.” Are you excited for Nicki’s “SNL” debut? Tell us what you think! Taylor Swift Tops Billboard Again In Slow Sales Week

Singer’s Speak Now notches lowest #1 figures in SoundScan era. By Gil Kaufman Taylor Swift Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage Taylor Swift has smashed a host of records in her short career, but next week the 21-year-old, newly single star will notch another one that probably won’t land in her bio. In a dismally slow week on the Billboard albums chart, Swift’s Speak Now held on to the #1 spot again while posting the lowest totals ever for a #1 album in the SoundScan era. According to SoundScan, the disc moved 52,000 copies, which helped vault it over the 3 million mark, but also broke the dubious record set by the soundtrack to the movie “Dreamgirls” in January 2007, which had the previous #1 low at 66,000. Only one new title moved into the top 10, the soundtrack to Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Country Strong,” which came in at #10 on sales of 28,000 after climbing up from the #149 slot in its first week. The rest of the top 10 suffered double-digit percentage losses, including: Nicki Minaj , Pink Friday (#2, 39,000); Bruno Mars , Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#3, 38,000); “Tron Legacy” soundtrack (#4, 34,000); Eminem , Recovery (#5, 33,000); Rihanna , Loud (#6, 33,000); Kanye West , My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (#7, 33,000); Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (#8, 31,000); and Jason Aldean , My Kinda Party (#9, 29,000). The Black Keys got a major bump before their “Saturday Night Live” appearance , moving up 12 spots to #14 with Brothers (25,000), which pushed the band over the 500,000 mark. Meanwhile, Jamie Foxx ‘s latest, Best Night of My Life, slid a bit more, dropping 5 spots to #16 on sales of 23,000. “Country Strong” fared much better on the iTunes album charts, coming in at #1, followed by the Black Keys, “Tron,” Mumford & Sons, West, Mars, Swift, Rihanna, a second “Country Strong” soundtrack compilation and Eminem. The iTunes singles chart was topped by Mars’ “Grenade,” followed by Katy Perry ‘s “Firework,” Enrique Iglesias ‘ “Tonight,” the Black Eyed Peas ‘ “The Time (Dirty Bit)” and Wiz Khalifa ‘s “Black and Yellow.” Though iTunes doesn’t provide sales figures, it was also a good week for Ke$ha, who came in at #6 with “We R Who We R,” followed by Lil Wayne ‘s “6 Foot 7 Foot,” Pink ‘s “Raise Your Glass,” Rihanna’s “What’s My Name” and Waka Flocka Flame ‘s “No Hands.” Things will probably stay mostly steady again next week with just a few new releases, including the latest from ornate rockers the Decemberists and albums by Cake , Cage the Elephant , James Blunt and the Script . Who Scored Big in Week 11 of SNL’s Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time-Player Relevancy Poll?

It was a peculiar week for Saturday Night Live , with the cast pretty much resigned to taking a back seat to the manic comedic stylings of host Jim Carrey; except for the cold open and “Weekend Update,” Carrey was the focal point of every sketch. As a result, this week’s SNL Relevancy Poll is thrown more than a bit off-kilter: Instead of cast members standing out, what we saw instead were cast members just trying to keep up with their host. And if there’s anything we know about SNL , it’s that it rarely (if ever) functions at its best as a one-man show.

‘Empire Strikes Back’ Added To National Film Registry

‘Saturday Night Fever,’ ‘Airplane!’ among other movies recognized by Library of Congress. By Jayson Rodriguez “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” Photo: FOX Thirty years ago, moviegoers were stunned when Darth Vader revealed in “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” that he was Luke Skywalker’s father. On Tuesday (December 28), however, there was no surprise when the venerable sci-fi flick was selected by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Film Registry, according to The Associated Press. The honor recognizes the iconic 1980 movie for being artistically, culturally or historically significant. A copy of the original film will be preserved by the registry at the Packard Campus of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia, for future generations. “The Empire Strikes Back” was produced by “Star Wars” auteur George Lucas but directed by Irvin Kershner. It was joined by 24 other films; more than 2,500 were nominated. The John Travolta-powered disco vehicle “Saturday Night Fever,” the Watergate drama “All the President’s Men” and Spike Lee’s biopic “Malcolm X” were among the popular titles to make the cut. The films will be added to a library that includes upwards of 550 titles, including Lucas’ “American Graffiti” and the first installment of “Star Wars.” Comedies including “The Pink Panther” and “Airplane!” were also selected by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, who has picked every film in the registry since its inception in 1989. “Airplane!” is a hilarious spoof of disaster movies that starred Leslie Nielsen, who died less than a month ago at the age of 84. ‘B.M.F’ To T.I.: The Top 10 Hip-Hop Stories Of 2010

Take a look back at what happened to Lil Wayne, Guru, Nicki Minaj and other rap stars in the past 12 months. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: John Parra/ WireImage In 2010, the biggest stories in hip-hop imbued the community with collective cheers (as new stars like Drake and Nicki Minaj began to break out) and sobs (as Guru passed and T.I. returned to prison). There were also stories we’ll probably still remember years from now, like when Eminem and Jay-Z joined forces in their hometown ballparks or when Weezy was freed from Rikers. Here, MTV News takes a look at the top 10 hip-hop stories of the year. “B.M.F.” Bawses Rick Ross’ industrial-strength anthem was hip-hop’s biggest street record of the year and transformed the Miami MC from punching bag to Teflon Don following his feud with 50 Cent. His textured voice delivered a series of massively catchy lines (“I think I’m Big Meech!”), while 2010’s breakout producer Lex Luger laced the track with a concrete-hard instrumental. “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” served as the soundtrack to the summer, and rappers like Lupe Fiasco (“Building Minds Faster”), Sheek Louch (“The Real New York”) and Jermaine Dupri (“I Think I’m Berry Gordy”) all took the beat for a spin. Drake Debuts Heading into 2010, the Toronto lyricist was still riding high from his breakout mixtape, 2009’s So Far Gone , and expectations were adding up like late charges. But the Lil Wayne prot

Ke$ha Rises From Oddball To Icon In 2010

This year, nobody defied description quite like Ke$ha, the pop oddity who shows no signs of slowing down. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: Venturelli/ Getty Images In January, when “Tik Tok” was just starting to hit, I described Ke$ha as “a 22-year-old pop confectionary/cautionary tale.” By November, when “We R Who We R” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, I had crowned her an “outcast icon.” The truth probably lies somewhere in between those two statements, but if there’s a better way to sum up the pop star’s rather incredible rise to fame, I am unaware of it. Because in 2010, there really was no one else who came close to matching Ke$ha, whether in terms of sheer chart dominance (“Tik Tok,” enjoyed the year’s longest run at #1, spending nine weeks atop the Hot 100), or pure WTF-ery. She began the year as a belching, squelching, booze-swilling party monster and ended it as perhaps the most unlikely of role models — an unrepentant oddball who not only dared to speak her mind, but defy conventions, too. And through it all, she remained largely unclassifiable, shifting between genres (pop, hip-hop, rock) and personas (dumpster-diving diva, Topanga Canyon bohemian, DayGlo star child) with each successive hit. And because of that, Ke$ha became one of the year’s most interesting characters, the kind of pop oddity that leaves critics alternately grasping at adjectives and scratching their heads. “I think ‘What is Ke$ha?’ is definitely the question, more than ‘Who is Ke$ha?’ because the ‘What?’ is really the thing, ” New York Times writer Jon Caramanica told MTV News. “When she first came into the game, she was this pop singer with a little bit of a country background, but [doing] this sort of whiny, white-girl rap … but, if anything, ‘Tik Tok’ proved there’s an entire audience of people who are pop fans, but who have a really high tolerance for rap music. Maybe they’re not going to buy a Kanye West record, but they’re not unafraid of hip-hop. And with Ke$ha, and her loose, ‘I don’t give a f—‘ approach to making these songs resonates with the loose, ‘I don’t give a f—‘ approach of the fans in listening to the songs. They hear something of themselves in her.” Of course, Ke$ha suffered for her, uh, art, becoming one of the year’s most popular punching bags — particularly following a pair of bizarre performances on “Saturday Night Live” — but as the year draws to a close, her grip on the pop world seems to be permanent. Not only is she the unlikeliest of stars, she’s also one of the most persistent … and love her or hate her, you’ve got to admit that she made 2010 just a bit more bearable, even if it was with her willingness to push the boundaries of absurdity. Well, her songs were pretty great, too. And she did it entirely her way. “I think Ke$ha’s definitely gone way past her 15 minutes of fame, [but] the appeal with her is that there’s an honesty,” Noah Callahan-Bever, editor in chief of Complex magazine, said. “In a market of totally prefab pop stuff, there’s almost a sloppiness to her whole persona, and I think that realness appeals to people. I think it doesn’t hurt that she works with the best producer in pop music, either,” he said, referring to right-hand man Dr. Luke. In 2010, thanks to that winning combination of pitch-perfect pop and pure, unfiltered weirdness, Ke$ha pretty much conquered the world. She won over fans and earned begrudging respect from the critics. And she wore dead animals on her head. Wherever she goes in 2011, I’ll follow. And I’ll likely be just as perplexed as the rest of you. Do you expect Ke$ha’s party to stop or keep rocking in 2011? Let us know in the comments.
