According to a new tabloid report, Bravo has finally grown weary of Danielle Staub. Despite the record ratings The Real Housewives of New Jersey has delivered this season, a source tells Life & Style that the show’s most controversial star won’t return in 2011. “Danielle was told that she would not be returning for a third season,” an insider said , describing the firing as “a complete shock” to Staub. The timing does make sense. Although Staub delivers the sort of scandals and fights that reality TV executives crave, new, extremely sordid details about her drug-dealing past came to light last week. Combined with a sex tape , there’s only so much a network can take. The Real Housewives of New Jersey concludes this season on August 23 – and then airs two more reunion specials on August 30 and September 6. If Staub really is being let go, Bravo will milk every last possible second of publicity it can out of her craziness. Would you be sad to see Danielle fired?

Mel Gibson needs to get a grip … on the steering wheel. The actor was thankfully uninjured after getting into a car accident yesterday in Malibu. Vince Ramirez of the California Highway Patrol confirmed the crash. Reports say Mel was driving solo when he lost control of his 2008 Maserati at 8:35 p.m. and crashed it into a rocky hillside. He was apparently sober, too. “Mr. Gibson supplied all the pertinent information to the officers at the scene, gave a statement and received a ride home from a friend,” Ramirez said. “His vehicle was towed from the scene.” Poor Mel Gibson just can’t catch a break these days. Unlike his infamous 2006 DUI arrest , after which he swore at police, called a woman “sugar t!ts,” tried to break a pay phone and blamed Jews for all the world’s problems, “Driving under the influence is not suspected in this accident.” Mel is currently embroiled in a contentious custody battle with his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva over their 9-month-old daughter Lucia. He is also being investigated for domestic violence, as she claims he hit her in a January 6 altercation. He may or may not have been doing Violet Kowal also.

Visual effects supervisor Frazer Churchill tells MTV News how practical effects, CGI wizardry were used in film. By Eric Ditzian Michael Cera in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” Photo: Universal Pictures To say moviegoers have never seen anything like “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is not exactly true. Pop culture has been suffused with its various in-your-face references — from “Super Mario Brothers” coins to “Seinfeld” bass lines to Japanese manga visuals and beyond — for decades. But what no one has ever seen is a film that so seamlessly and energetically gathers them all together into a neon pastiche of flashing graphics, sound cues and linguistic nods. What makes this entertainment patchwork all the more impressive is that it takes place within a recognizable world: neighborly, snow-covered Toronto. Welcome to magical realism, 21st-century-cinema style. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), the sleepy-eyed hero, fights off his girlfriend’s nefarious exes in a series of video game-influenced battles and shuffles his way through life as bright graphics pop up to introduce characters and moods. How did the filmmakers pull all this off? And where did they get all these references? Visual effects supervisor Frazer Churchill was kind enough to walk MTV News through the creation of some of these cultural odes, as well as to talk about the film’s mixture of practical effects and CGI wizardry. Here are five “Scott Pilgrim” secrets revealed. Beware of mild spoilers below! “Arkham Asylum” and “Soulcalibur” References Many of the video game references are fairly obvious — “Super Mario,” “Street Fighter” — but others are less so. Pay close attention during the fight scenes, and you’ll see what we’re talking about. “Often we’d be in a fight sequence and when people get hit, these impact graphics appear, as per a game,” Churchill said. “We’d go and look for a game that had a cool impact graphic that fit well with the scene. We had 150 people on our crew, so we had a good research base. We found impact graphic ideas from ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ and ‘Soulcalibur.’ ” Once they found a suitable reference point, the trick was to make the graphics “feel photographic, rather than graphic” — as in, part of the real world, rather than part of a video game. “Sometimes we would take the graphics and split them apart into their various color channels, so you had this kind of film look, like chromatic aberration with a lens, and there’s a slight red, green and blue fringing to a graphic,” he said. How They Created the “Pee Bar” Scene One of the funniest scenes in the film is one in which Scott heads into the bathroom and a graphic “pee bar” meter floats over his shoulder. When he drains the meter and opens the door again, the apartment is gone and a dreamscape exists behind him. You might think director Edgar Wright employed some fancy CG work there, but it was all done with practical effects. “That’s actually a set that’s on wheels,” Churchill said. “As he walks in, the door closes, and 15 grips wheel the set away and wheel another one into place and he walks out into a dream corridor. It’s not a green screen shot. If you were to hear the real sound from the shot, you’d hear these enormous shuffles and rumbles as the set was being rumbled away.” What Is CG and What Is Real That bathroom scene is just one example of the seamless merger of CG trickery with practical effects. Churchill revealed to us a few instances of what’s real and what was created inside a computer. One ethereal scene in a park, when Pilgrim and his girlfriend Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) hang out on swings in the snow, looks like it was shot using a blue screen, but Churchill revealed, “We went up to a park in Toronto and shot at night. We added snow later with CG.” Another scene in which Chris Evans’ character skateboards down an enormous rail was shot with a combo of blue screen and CG. “The legs and Chris’ reaction are all blue screen and the environment is CG, but it’s based on an actual location,” Churchill said. “Those Casa Loma steps exist, but we exaggerate them a lot. “The desert of Scott’s dreams is purely blue screen,” he added. “For the subspace, they’re floating on a wire rig in front of a blue screen and we added everything later.” Notice “Naruto” In addition to the video game references during fights, Wright also incorporated the look and feel of manga. He actually culled together some of his favorite cartoons and handed them off to Churchill and his team, which they then reconstructed with CGI technology. “We had a reference reel of cartoons and manga series like ‘Naruto,’ which was a big influence because it has those ‘killer moves,’ ” he explained. “In ‘Street Fighter’ or ‘Mortal Kombat,’ there will be a ‘killer move,’ but in ‘Naruto’ you’ve got that real manga style, so when somebody gets hit with a ‘killer move,’ the background will drop out and a huge graphic will be superimposed behind them.” The Secret of Pilgrim’s Flaming Sword During Scott’s climactic battle, he ends up pulling a flaming sword from his chest. Once again, the filmmakers employed a combination of computer and physical effects to get exactly the right look. “We had a metal chest plate strapped to him with a sword piece welded to it, [and] the handle and the blade has these red LED lights on it,” Churchill said. “So when he’s leaning back, he’s got the sword strapped to his chest, and he grabs the handle, which is real. And then we put in the flames later and erased any trace of the metal prop. When the sword comes out, he has to react. We removed the physical sword and we put in the CG sword. You’ve got that mix of physical and visual effects, which make the scene work so well.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’: Five Secrets Revealed!
James Cameron says nine minutes of deleted scenes will be added when the flick returns to theaters on August 27. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Josh Horowitz James Cameron Photo: Getty Images Fans will learn more about Na’vi life when James Cameron’s blockbuster epic, “Avatar,” returns to the big-screen on August 27. Cameron told MTV News that moviegoers will check out nine minutes of unseen footage featuring life on Pandora. Although news of the re-release originally touted roughly eight minutes of deleted scenes, the director said he threw in an additional 60 seconds. The footage also includes an expanded version of the demise of Na’vi hunter Tsu’tey, who was killed during the climatic clash between the Pandora natives and the human army. “There’s a pretty powerful emotional scene at the end which is Tsu’tey’s death … which happens off-camera in the original release. [In the original film] he kind of falls off the back of the shuttle and that’s the last that you see of him but here we follow through. We have this emotional scene with Jake [Sully] and Neytiri and some other Na’vi that gather around him in the forest,” Cameron said. The director added that the decision to cut down on Tsu’tey’s passing was initially met with resistance from his fellow filmmakers. “It’s a funny thing because everybody that was working on the film, when I said I’m taking out Tsu’tey’s death, they said, ‘What? You can’t that!’ They had all fallen in love with it [because] it’s a pretty powerful moment,” he said. “It’s such an amazing accomplishment on [visual effects supervisor Timothy] Webber’s part because the emotionality in the CG is really quite stunning.” Cameron said the additional “Avatar” scenes involve four major moments, each around a couple minutes long, that turn up in the movie after the human soldiers fly a chopper into the lush Pandora rainforest for the first time. The revamped flick will also introduce fans to a new element of the alien environment: a herd-like creature called a Sturmbeest. “There’s a big scene we called the Sturmbeest hunt,” Cameron said. “The Sturmbeest is an animal that basically will be new to audiences because all of the Sturmbeest stuff got cut out. Once I took out the hunt, I took out the scene where I establish it [and] I took out the moment where it appears in the final battle. All that stuff’s now been reinstated so there’s gonna be a lot of Sturmbeest in your diet.” Cameron lamented that many scenes were originally nixed to either keep the up pace of the flick or to avoid derailing the budget of the technologically innovative enterprise. However, the director said scenes that were added to the re-release are big on non-stop action. “We’ve got a scene where the Na’vi attack the bulldozers after the scene where they’ve mowed down the willow glade,” Cameron said. “It’s kind of [an] action scene plus the aftermath with the human troopers finding the bodies of their friends.” He added that the scene provides added context for the subsequent conflict between the Na’vi and the humans. “It’s sort of like the stepping stone of the escalation to war. We sort of jump over all of that in the [original] film. [Human leaders Colonel Miles Quaritch] and [Parker] Selfridge just say, ‘OK, alright, let’s go take ’em out.’ But this sort of shows that there are steps in the process.” What are you looking forward to seeing in the new “Avatar” scenes? Let us know in the comments below! Check out everything we’ve got on “Avatar.”

As Jersey Shore goes, Season 2, Episode 2 (“The Hangover”) was not among the greatest. How could it be with the primary focus on Sammi and Ronnie? While Ronnie pretended not to remember what he did the night before, Sammi gave him the cold shoulder … until she came around for the 293rd time. Also heavily featured in this week’s episode? Angelina Pivarnick. Like Sammi and Ronnie, she really needs an intervention, or a just ticket home ASAP. At a certain point it’s just boring and annoying. Meltdowns are supposed to be fun to watch, right? Though we suppose JWoww may still throw down. Anyway, here’s The Hollywood Gossip ‘s scientific plus-minus recap … Ronnie, on hooking up with land mines and grenades in the premiere: “Yo, I was doin’ mad work tonight bro! Mad work!” Yo, you’re a douche, bro! Minus 8 . Vinny says one of Ronnie’s hookups plays tight end for the Giants. Plus 4 . Pauly D coins another gem: “Ronnie’s new nickname is IFF. The I’m F*%ked Foundation. He’s a client and the president!” Plus 7 , because it’s funny and true. For a girl nicknamed Sweetheart, Sammi really isn’t that nice. Minus 16 . We’re just saying. These girls are all catty, but she’s miserable and not even funny. JWoww at the tranny store: “The sex shop is perfect. Perfect … It’s my scene. And when I get into my scene I get into my clothes.” What clothes? Minus 6 . After buying a $395 pair of sunglasses, Snooki walks around blind, seeks pickles, ruins dinner, and does a half-ass job cleaning it up. Standard. Plus 9 . Delivery guy: What’s the name? Mike: Situation. S-i-t-u-a-t-i-o-n. Plus 5 . Snooki and JWoww confront Angelina about smack-talk pertaining to their friends/boyfriends. JWoww threatens violence many, many times. Plus 13 . Give it a rest, you guys. Seriously . Pauly D’s new boss is concerned about his hair. His response: “This hair ain’t movin’ my dude. 150 miles per hour on the highway on a street bike. Doesn’t move. What makes you think it’s gonna move in a gelato shop?” Amen. Plus 14 . The Situation introduces the shirt-before-the-shirt concept: “We have an abundance of wife beaters … we wear before we go out. Then it’s T-shirt time. Right before we go out we take off the tank and then we put on our fresh shirt.” Plus 11 . At the club, The Situation gets bitten while making out with a panty-less drunk girl. Happens to the best of us on Thursday nights. Hang in there. Minus 4 . Pauly D hooks up with a girl who, according to Angelina, is married. She confronts him about this, apparently unaware that 1. She used to date a married guy herself, and 2. Pauly D obviously doesn’t care, girl! Chill! Plus 7 . After professing her love to Pauly D (seriously), Ange proceeds to SLAP HIM. Minus 19 for being generally insane, and Minus 12 more for this being the most pathetic slap ever. Everyone hates you anyway … put your back into it! Plus 3 for next week’s promo. After this week, it should be hilariously awkward. TOTAL: +8 . SEASON: +34 . Follow this link for the night’s Jersey Shore quotes !

Rapper shares his feelings about Diddy in September cover story of XXL. By Jayson Rodriguez Shyne on the cover of the September 2010 edition of XXL Photo: XXL Expatriated rapper Shyne graces the September cover of XXL, and in the issue, the formerly jailed star talks about his gun case, Diddy and the decision he made more than 10 years ago that changed his life forever. “In my life, when I make decisions to roll, I roll,” Shyne told the magazine about firing a gun while partying with Diddy and the mogul’s then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez at Club New York. “And I don’t give a f— what the consequences are. If I’ma defend myself, I’ma defend myself. If somebody tryna kill or hurt one of my partnas or my comrades, that’s with me, there is no, ‘Yo,’ or, ‘Damn, well, if I pull this sh– out, this is what’s gonna happen.’ No! I don’t wanna die. I don’t wanna be laid up in no f—ing hospital with a tube runnin’ through me, hurtin’ and sufferin’. Pain is real. So you know what? I’m not doin’ that. You gon’ do that, mother—-er. You gon’ roll and say hi to Satan, not me. And that’s that. “Your survival instincts tell you to protect and preserve, and you deal with whatever later,” he explained of his actions. Shyne and Diddy were both charged in the December 1999 incident, and the two later went to trial separately with different legal representation. Diddy was aquitted , but Shyne was found guilty of first-degree assault, among other charges, and sentenced to 10 years in prison. After the trial, his relationship with the Bad Boy Records CEO soured. Shyne lashed out in interviews against his former mentor, claiming Diddy turned his back on him. Though he’s still not in agreement with the way things were handled, Shyne appears more measured in his personal take on Diddy’s actions. “You can always say, ‘Man, that ain’t the way to handle the situation,’ ” he told XXL. “Sure, I know in my soul that the situation was supposed to be handled in a different way. But it ain’t really a matter of disappointment or letdown, ’cause I never really … I grew up never having sh–, never having anybody. So I never was that dude to depend on a mother—-er. Obviously, the actions is not something that you condone or that you’re happy with. Not at all.” After serving almost nine years of his prison sentence, the Brooklyn-bred rapper was deported to his native Belize. Since then, he has re-joined Def Jam’s roster. The rapper has only provided a small sampling of material in the months after inking with the label, including “Messiah,” in which he raps with a noticeably drawn-out flow, a variation from the tighter delivery he displayed during his Bad Boy days. The Shyne interview is the first in a three-part series on the rapper set to run in forthcoming issues of XXL. Young Jeezy also graces the split cover of the magazine’s 13th anniversary issue, is set hit newsstands on the first week of August. XXL ‘s September issue hits stands August 10. Check out video coverage from the issue on the “Sucker Free Countdown,” Sundays at noon on MTV2. Do you think Shyne will be able to put the past behind him and create new music?
