‘Inception’ Hallway Scene: How Filmmakers Pulled It Off

‘I was blown away and also scratching my head,’ recalls DP Wally Pfister of seeing zero-gravity sequence in the script. By Eric Ditzian Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Inception” Photo: Warner Bros. On the red carpet for “Inception” last week, star Joseph Gordon-Levitt talked at length about one of the film’s most eye-popping visuals: a zero-gravity fight scene in a dream-created hallway that spins in all directions. It’s an astounding bit of moviemaking magic that has you wondering just how director Christopher Nolan and his team were able to do that. We put that question to Nolan’s right-hand man and longtime director of photography Wally Pfister, who revealed the inside scoop about the hallway scene, describing it as the movie’s most technically challenging sequence. “There are always scenes in a Chris Nolan script where I’m wondering how we’re going to pull it off, going all the way back to Guy Pearce shooting Joe Pantoliano in the head in ‘Memento,’ ” Pfister told MTV News. To create the environment, the scene was shot using not CG effects, but rather massive, rotating sets that twisted and turned and forced Gordon-Levitt to maneuver with utmost caution. Five-hundred crewmembers were involved in the scene, which took a full three weeks to complete. In a World War I-era airship hangar just outside London (also home to sets for “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight”), Nolan’s crew built a series of different hallway settings: a horizontal one that rotated 360 degrees, a vertical one that allowed actors to wear wires and another on which the actors were strapped to steel trolleys, which were eventually erased using visual effects. “When I was reading those rotating hallway scenes, I was blown away and also scratching my head,” Pfister recalled. Gordon-Levitt trained for two weeks with the stunt department to learn how to negotiate the rotations. When it came time to shoot, the whole crew would rehearse first with no rotation, and then graduate to a slower rehearsal with a little rotation, until it was finally time to roll the cameras. “We run the fight scene for as long as the actors can pull it off,” Pfister explained. “We begin with a camera that’s not fixed to the set and shows a bit of the rotation, and then you quickly jump to where you’re rotating with the set. It creates this bizarre, strange movement. It’s an exhausting process for the actors. Having rotated on that set myself, it’s really quite challenging and a very strange thing to get used to. If you jump at the wrong time, you could be falling 12 feet through the air. “We kept coming back to it,” he added. “We’d shoot out a part of a sequence and then the riggers would have to adjust something. We’d duck out and shoot something else and come back a few hours later and shoot more. The whole thing was spread out over about three weeks. You’ve never seen anything like this before.” Which scene in “Inception” ranks as the most memorable to you? Tell us in the comments! Man Indicted In ‘American Idol’ Hopeful Alexis Cohen’s Hit-And-Run Death

Daniel J. Bark, 24, charged with four counts, including aggravated manslaughter and death by auto. By Gil Kaufman Alexis Cohen during her “American Idol” audition Photo: Fox The man who struck and killed high-energy “American Idol” wannabe Alexis Cohen last year in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, was indicted on Thursday and charged with aggravated manslaughter and other crimes in the incident. According to the Asbury Park Press, a grand jury handed up a four-count indictment on 24-year-old Daniel J. Bark , charging him with aggravated manslaughter, death by auto, eluding police and knowingly leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in a death in the late-night July 25 incident that took the life of 25-year-old Cohen. The singer was best known for her raucous attitude and a lively banter with judges that made her an audience favorite when she unsuccessfully tried out for “Idol” in seasons seven and eight. Her lifeless body was found on the street in a residential New Jersey neighborhood around 5 a.m. last July after police said she’d been struck by a vehicle, suffering fatal head and torso injuries. An hour before Cohen’s body was discovered, Bark was stopped by Seaside Heights police, who issued a number of motor-vehicle summonses, including driving while intoxicated, according to the paper. Those summonses were executed after Bark allegedly fled from officers pursuing him on bicycle and he struck a parked car in the parking lot of a popular local nightspot, Hemingway’s. He fled into the vicinity of Cohen’s fatality, and when officers in patrol cars eventually stopped him a few blocks away, they were able to connect him to Cohen’s death. Police also determined that Cohen, a native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, had been drinking that night as well. If convicted, Bark is facing a prison term of 10 to 30 years for the aggravated manslaughter charge, along with an additional five to 10 years for the charges of eluding police, death by auto and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He remains in jail, unable to post the $150,000 bail.

BREAKING NEWS:Bombs Strike World Cup Watchers In Uganda, Kill 64

KAMPALA, Uganda — In simultaneous bombings bearing the hallmarks of international terrorists, two explosions ripped through crowds watching the World Cup final in two places in Uganda's capital late Sunday, killing 64 people, police said. One American was killed and several were wounded. The deadliest attack occurred at a rugby club as people watched the game between Spain and the Netherlands on a large-screen TV outdoors. The second blast took place at an Ethiopian restaurant, where at least three Americans were wounded. One American was killed in the blasts, said Joann Lockard, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Kampala. Kampala's police chief said he believed Somalia's most feared militant group, al-Shabab, could be responsible for the attack. Al-Shabab is known to have links with al-Qaida, and it counts militant veterans from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan conflicts among its ranks. A head and legs were found at the rugby club, suggesting a suicide bomber may have been to blame, an AP reporter at the scene said. At least three Americans – part of a church group from Pennsylvania – were wounded at the Ethiopian restaurant. One was Kris Sledge, 18, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. “I remember blacking out, hearing people screaming and running,” Sledge said from the hospital. His right leg was wrapped and he had burns on his face. “I love the place here but I'm wondering why this happened and who did this … At this point we're just glad to be alive.” At the scenes of the two blasts, blood and pieces of flesh littered the floor among overturned chairs. Police Chief Kale Kaihura originally said at least 30 people had been killed, though the toll could be higher. Later, a senior police official at the scene said that 64 people had been killed – 49 from the rugby club and 15 at the Ethiopian restaurant. The official said he could not be identified. Kaihura said he suspected al-Shabab, that country's most hardline militant group. Its fighters, including two recruited from the Somali communities in the United States, have carried out multiple suicide bombings in Somalia. If Kaihura's suspicions that al-Shabab was responsible for the Uganda bombings prove true, it would be the first time the group has carried out attacks outside of Somalia. added by: keithponder

Blake Lively’s Sweet And Sexy Wedgie

I’ve had Blake Lively hotness all over the site this week because she’s finally come out of hiding to get back to work on that Gossip Girl show in Paris. Here she is getting man handled by Leighton Meester in a pair of sexy short shorts causing a tasty little wedgie to occur. Nice. I’m hoping that this scene ends with the two of them locked in an angry embrace in that fancy fountain behind them. That’s just quality television.

‘Eclipse’ Moviegoers Get Pumped Up Outside NYC Midnight Screening

‘I’m going to see it again and again and again,’ one eager Twilighter tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” Photo: Summit Only eight months have passed since “New Moon” hit theaters, but fans of “The Twilight Saga” have still waited anxiously for “Eclipse” to finally arrive. Thankfully, the waiting ends at midnight. “Eclipse” is officially here, bringing Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner back to the big screen once again. MTV News a New York movie theater to gauge fan excitement over the release of “Eclipse,” and unsurprisingly, the masses proved quite anxious for the movie’s first frames. “I’m really excited,” Hortencia Caires said. “I’ve read all of the series, all of the books, and I’ve watched all of the movies. I’m pretty darn stoked! I’m excited for Bella to finally make her choice. People portray Jacob as the guy she wants, but technically, I think she’s always wanted Edward. This is the right choice for her.” Indeed, the merit of Team Edward vs. Team Jacob was a hot-button issue among the many Twilighters we spoke with. “I’m Team Edward, duh!” Oladayo Idowu exclaimed proudly. “First, I was Jacob, and then I was Edward, because he’s best for [Bella].” “I’m on Team Jacob because he’s cute,” Cecilia Le said. “I don’t know. There are a lot of reasons!” Even fellow fans and friends Ellie Miltner and Amanda Lawrence couldn’t agree between Edward and Jacob. “I personally just like the vampire thing,” Amanda said, while Ellie declared: “I’m a werewolf kind of girl!” The two friends could agree on one thing: their most anticipated scene. “I’m most looking forward to the scene in the tent where Edward and Jacob are there together,” Ellie said, a notion Amanda agreed with. “They said it was really fun to film, so we’re excited about that, and he’s naked, so that’s the best part!” Other fans were excited to watch the highly touted action scenes, courtesy of acclaimed horror director David Slade. “I’m most excited for the scene where the vampires come out of the water and the big battle begins,” Stacey Harris said. Amanda Scully agreed with Stacey: “The scene where they fight at the end. It’s action-packed, and I like the action!” Even if fans had trouble agreeing on their favorite characters and scenes, they all shared the same infectious enthusiasm for the “Twilight” franchise. One fan even drove all the way to New York from Pennsylvania just to make sure her first viewing of “Eclipse” was extra special. “I live in Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, and I wanted to come to an IMAX theater,” Erika Abad said. “I’ve never been to one.” “I’m really excited,” Oladayo said. “I’m here for [the midnight showing], so I’m surprised my mom even let me out! I’ve been waiting for this movie since I saw ‘Twilight.’ I’m going to see it again and again and again.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Adam Lambert Talks Importance Of Rhinestones, Pre-Show ‘Rituals’

‘We get in front of the mirror and kind of play every night,’ Lambert tells MTV News of makeup artist Sutan on Glam Nation Tour. By Jim Cantiello Adam Lambert Photo: MTV News Believe it or not, Adam Lambert does not wake up with rhinestones affixed to his cheekbones. The pop star, currently headlining his in-demand Glam Nation Tour , gets creative with his glittery stage makeup moments before showtime. “We get in front of the mirror and kind of play every night,” Lambert told MTV News backstage at a recent sold-out New York City tour stop. “We just create and it’s fun. So sometimes there’s like rhinestones stuck all over [the] side of my head. Sometimes we give a little Eastern bindi action. Sometimes there [are] no stones whatsoever,” he added. The “we” Lambert was referring to includes makeup guru Sutan, who has long been among Lambert’s circle of friends. But fans may know the flamboyant makeup artist from his stint on “America’s Next Top Model.” “He’s so funny and has such a great energy, and I really like his work,” Lambert gushed. Rhinestones and face glue, however, aren’t the only tools Adam needs to prep for a show. In order to maintain his powerhouse, octave-jumping voice, Lambert has finally zeroed in on a secret weapon: aerobics. “I never used to be one to do any sort of ritual before I performed and just recently, at the start of this tour, I decided to start coming up with a routine. And it’s really helped me,” the singer said. “I exercise; I do like a cardio thing. If I’m in a hotel with a treadmill I either run for 20 minutes or I get on a stationary bike,” Lambert continued. “It makes you feel good, it gets the endorphins going. It also kind of helps warm up the voice. And then I do a [proper] vocal warm-up.” As fun as the face painting is, the “Idol” star knows that ultimately, it’s all about delivering the music. “Those two things — just a little exercise and that vocal warm-up — keep me at my best. With fans “waiting out on the street , people are so dedicated, they deserve the best,” Lambert said. His Glam Nation Tour continues through September , before heading overseas later this fall.
