The Chevy Volt Goes on a Tour of the USA

Image: GM I Have a Special Request for GM To promote the launch of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, 6 Volts are about to embark on a cross-country tour. Over 3,400 miles and stops in 12 major cities are planned (see the schedule below), with special events where people will be able to do test-drives and talk to GM engineers. It all sounds good, but there’s something I’d like to request from GM and that I think would make this whole thing a lot more interested: Once all this is all over, I’d like GM to release details on how many gallons of gasoline and how many kWh of electricity were used during this ro… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ Director Recalls Video’s ‘Explosion’

Francis Lawrence-directed clip took home Video of the Year at VMAs. By Adam Rosenberg Lady Gaga at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images As the top-nominated artist at Sunday night’s 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , pop sensation Lady Gaga’s “little monsters” were tuned in to witness her triumphs — and they weren’t disappointed. Gaga took home eight Moonmen, including the evening’s top prize for Video of the Year . Director Francis Lawrence was also honored for his work on “Bad Romance,” though even with work for artists like Britney Spears, Will Smith and Aerosmith behind him, he admitted that nothing he’s done compares with the fervor generated by the night’s top-winning video. “I’ve been doing it a long time, but I’ve never really experienced an explosion with a video like this, where people so eagerly awaited it and it blew up on YouTube instantly,” he explained. “For a while, until the Justin Bieber video came out , it was the most-viewed video on YouTube.” Lawrence admitted that he would love to work with Gaga again, though his increased focus in recent years on Hollywood features, such as “I Am Legend” or the upcoming Robert Pattinson/ Reese Witherspoon-starring adaptation “Water for Elephants” leaves his schedule pretty packed. “I haven’t [heard from her], because I pretty much became unavailable right after [the ‘Bad Romance’] shoot,” he said. “But if she had a new song and wanted to do something, I would do it in a second. She was really fun to work with.” Lawrence’s interest in working with Gaga again can largely be credited to the pop star’s own passion for a well-made music video, a fact that is evident in all of her work. “She loves the art form of music videos and she is a real creative partner and has great ideas and really cool and unique tastes. She has a great team working with her as well, helping build really fantastic things that she wears,” he explained. “She works hard, she shows up on time and she’s pretty spontaneous… it was great.” “Bad Romance” is an excellent example of this. Lawrence and Gaga each had their own ideas for how the video ought to look. They met, discussed it and collaborated to produce a shared vision, one that incorporated ideas from both sides. Even when the plan changed, there was still a clear idea of what to do and how to do it. “Originally I was gonna shoot [‘Bad Romance’] in New York and we were gonna shoot it on location. There were more exteriors and things like that,” Lawrence said. “And then because of budgetary restraints and because of her schedule, we moved it to Los Angeles and the setting changed and it all just became that one interior space, but the basic idea and the concept of the video stayed pretty much the same.” On those “budgetary restraints,” Lawrence freely admits that times have changed. “Years ago, when I was really making [music videos], before I was making movies, budgets would be over a million dollars,” he said. “Bad Romance” featured no product placement, but he said the reason we see such things in music videos these days is that it allows for bigger budgets — which makes the Gaga video all the more impressive. “It was a two-day shoot,” he said. “We spent two 14-hour days shooting.” Were you happy “Bad Romance” took home Video of the Year? Academy: Jean-Luc Godard Will Accept His Oscar

This is just getting ridiculous: AMPAS issued a statement late Tuesday announcing that stroppy New Wave pioneer Jean-Luc Godard had not only sent a handwritten reply to news of his honorary Oscar win, but an acknowledgment that “schedule permitting, he would come to Los Angeles for the November 13 Governors Awards event.” Schedule permitting! Who’s he kidding? He probably booked that day for Hyundai maintenance weeks ago. [ Deadline ]

American Idols Live! Tour Dates Canceled

Eight dates have been axed from the summer tour featuring season-nine ‘Idol’ contestants. By Mawuse Ziegbe Katie Stevens, Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and Aaron Kelly on the American Idols Live! Tour Photo: Mark Cunningham/ WireImage Several dates have been slashed from the American Idols Live! Tour, which kicked off just before the Fourth of July weekend with a stop in Michigan on Friday. As the season-nine contestants continue to make their way across the country, an updated tour schedule posted on the “American Idol” website shows that eight dates have been canceled. The revised concert schedule also reflects an earlier finale for the tour, wrapping now on August 31 in Indianapolis instead of on September 16 in Portland, Maine , as previously planned. Shows in cities including Buffalo, New York; Portland, Oregon; Kansas City, Missouri; and Cleveland have all been nixed. Canadian stops in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Toronto have also been cut. The tour, featuring finalists from the ninth season of the amateur talent juggernaut, highlights “Idol” champ Lee DeWyze and runner-up (and fan fave) Crystal Bowersox. A spokesperson for Live Nation confirmed the cancellations to The Associated Press but declined to explain the reason for the schedule revamp. The axed American Idols Live! Tour dates follow a rash of canceled shows by several major musical acts scheduled to hit the road this summer. The once-popular, female-fronted Lilith Fair was recently forced to scale back , cutting 10 tour dates because of poor ticket sales. Christina Aguilera postponed her tour until 2011 due to scheduling issues, as did U2, who pushed back their 360 Tour while lead singer Bono recovers from surgery. Although no official reason has been given for the new tour schedule, interest in “American Idol” appears to be on the wane. Twenty-four million viewers tuned in to see DeWyze get crowned as the season-nine victor, but that tally marked the lowest finale rating since the final episode of the show’s 2002 debut season. In addition, DeWyze and Bowersox’s post-“Idol” offerings have seen slow sales; the season-nine singers have fared significantly worse on the charts than the season-eight breakout stars, winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert. Are you planning to see the American Idols Live! Tour? Or have you lost interest since season nine? Let us know in the comments. David Guetta Wants To Drop Dance Beats On Rihanna’s Next LP

The superstar French DJ/ producer tells MTV News he and the pop diva have discussed a collaboration. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Matt Elias and Akshay Bhansali Rihanna Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images When Rihanna released her Rated R last fall, she showed fans that she was in a darker, more serious mood. Tracks like “Russian Roulette” and “Hard” were decidedly more introspective than her past club bangers. But if superstar French DJ David Guetta has his way, he’ll have Rih back to singing tunes like her mega-hit “Umbrella.” “Well, you know I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you wanna dance,” Guetta told MTV News at the Activision E3 party in Los Angeles. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” While the producer already has some material in mind for the pop star, he said it was just a matter of scheduling. “We[‘re] thinking of doing something together, yes,” he revealed. “Yeah, yeah, yeah [the beat’s ready], we just have to make sure it’s okay with her schedule and my schedule cause we … this is what happens. Unfortunately, it’s not only about the music anymore, it’s also about schedules, which is really boring but, you know.” Dutch DJ/ producer Afrojack has also gotten behind the boards, Guetta said, crafting what he hopes will be the next big Rihanna hit. “Like, he was in the studio with me the first time [after] he finished the new song for Rihanna,” Guetta recalled of Afrojack. “He was like, ‘Oh, my God! You gotta hear this! It’s crazy!’ I was expecting some crazy club sh–. He played me that track and it was a good track. I think pop-wise it’s a fatter sound. Musically, it’s as high a level as RedOne, Lady Gaga’s producer.” Rihanna has been vocal about bringing up the energy level on her next album. ” Rated R, I love the sound of it, in terms of the bass,” Rihanna told MTV Korea in February. “I really like the bottom, the grime of it. But if I were to combine that with more energetic, up-tempo pop records, then I think that will be a happy marriage. And that’s where we’ll probably go next.” Where would you like to see Rihanna go musically on her next album? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Rihanna David Guetta
