‘Bad Teacher’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Before signing up for Cameron Diaz’s class, study up with our fun facts. By Eric Ditzian Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake in “Bad Teacher” Photo: Sony It’s been more than a month since “Bridesmaids” slayed us at the cinema. We’re desperately in need of some hard-R laughs, a few gross-out moments that make us cringe, and the reminder that as crazy as we might be, we’re not nearly as loco as the folks we’re watching onscreen. Thus, we say thanks to “Bad Teacher” as it floats, on a comedic cloud of profanity and penis jokes, into theaters. Cameron Diaz stars as Elizabeth Halsey, an educator less concerned with math lessons than she is in smoking pot and calculating her way into marriage with any filthy-rich doofus. She meets the perfect mark in Justin Timberlake’s Scott Delacorte, a substitute teacher and a guy so freaking nice there’s got be something wrong with him. And then we have Jason Segel’s sly gym teacher; even though he’s got the hots for Halsey, his paycheck doesn’t have nearly enough digits to entice the leggy blonde. But all this is just the setup. The punch comes in a series of outlandish events that, if we were to reveal them here, would just spoil the fun. What we can do is tell you everything you need to know about “Bad Teacher” before hitting the multiplex this weekend. That’s where our cheat sheet comes into play. Getting Ready for Class News of the film, penned by “Office” scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, broke in December of 2009. Diaz had signed on , but the rest of the cast had yet to be filled out. That changed a few months later, when Timberlake and Segel hopped aboard . Though Diaz had formerly dated JT, the actress had no qualms about stepping in front of the camera with him. “He’s the best person for the job. He’s going to be hilarious,” she said. “He’s clearly a very talented comedian; look at his ‘Saturday Night Live’ [skits]. He’s fantastic. He’s going to be so great.” School’s in Session Filming kicked off in March. Nearly a year later, a truly filthy red-band trailer popped up online, giving us a very clear idea of how truly terrible a teacher Diaz would be: “Are you f—ing kidding me?” she writes on a student’s test. While the comedy’s raunchiness was no surprise, Timberlake’s weirdo of a sub certainly was. As Diaz later explained to us , “He gives us a character that you have not seen yet before — not just him, but pretty much anyone. It’s just a very interesting character and a lot of fun to watch. By the end of it, you’re like, ‘What is up with that dude?’ It’s hilarious.” The Final Exam As part of our Summer Movie Preview Week, we debuted an exclusive photo of Diaz getting ready for a fundraising car wash unlike any that you might recall from your school days and also sat down for a chat with the woman herself. “She’s miserable. She’s not happy with her world, and she doesn’t pretend that she is,” Diaz said of her character. “Her pain is real. She’s living a very painful existence, so there’s no humor to her in this.” Sure, she’s a woman in pain. But there’s also something liberating about the way she just doesn’t give a hoot about anything. “I think that’s why people love Elizabeth,” Diaz told us at the film’s premiere in New York City. “It’s because everyone wants to be her, even for an hour, maybe a day. If you get away with a week — oh my gosh! I got to play her for six weeks. So yeah, it was a lot of fun.” “The first 30 pages, I’m like, ‘I am not playing this. There is no way I can play this character. There [are] no redeeming qualities to this character,’ ” she recalled of the script in an earlier chat. “And by the end of it, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is genius! There’s no redeeming qualities to this character!’ We got to the end of the script, and we’re not apologizing for anything she said. It’s a very modest arc.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Bad Teacher.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Cory Monteith Parade magazine 2011

“I#39;m not Finn Hudson,” the actor who plays him, Cory Monteith, tells Parade magazine in an eye-opening interview that will appear Sunday. When it comes to his present and his past, Monteith, 29, admits, “I#39;m lucky on so many counts – I#39;m lucky to be alive.” Football – and singing – star at William McKinley High School, Finn Hudson is quite a role model, as evidenced every week on Glee. But he#39;s also quite a work of fiction. A precocious child whose parents divorced when he was 7,

November 16, 2010 was the best day of my life. I remember I was…

November 16, 2010 was the best day of my life. I remember I was going to the Justin Bieber concert in Boston, Massachusetts at the Boston Garden with 3 of my best friends. It was on a Tuesday, so right after school we drove down to Boston. While we were in the car we were listening to his CD the whole way down and was talking about him. Then when we got there the first thing we did was buy t-shirts and went out to eat. Then finally we stood in line for about an hour outside in the cold. It was the biggest line I’ve ever seen. All four of us were singing and yelling while everyone was looking at us . Then the doors finally opened. Our seats were apart from each other so it was two of us in one section and two of us in another. My friend and I decided to take the first row of the Lodge and seats 9 and 10. My other two friends sat down on the floor but farther back then us. When the concert started you couldn’t hear anything because all you could hear was everyone screaming at the top of there lungs but I was doing the same. Sean Kingston came on first then Justin came on and the place got ever louder. I was yelling and screaming to every song Justin was singing so far. While Justin was singing “Down to earth” a lady (Allison) came up to me and said, “Do you wanna be the One Less Lonely Girl”. I said “What?” (since I couldn’t hear because of all the screaming) then she said again, “Do you wanna be the One Less Lonely Girl?” Then I realized what she was asking me and I said “YES!” She said, “Alright come with me” . I followed her backstage. She asked me questions like, “Where are you from?” “How old are you?” then she said “Do you need any water?” because I looked like I was going to pass out . Then she said, “Justin is going to sing to you” and she was talking to me the whole time and was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Then one of Justin’s back up dancers, Marvin, started talking to me and started dancing with me. They told me to move in a different place backstage but closer to the curtain. I remember Allison saying “look” and I could see the shadow of Justin being behind me singing to the audience. Then everyone asked me to step up in front of the black curtain. Then when I heard the lyrics, “I can fix up your broken heart” they opened the curtain for me and I walked out on stage . They brought me a chair and I started getting tears in my eyes. I couldn’t believe what was happening. Justin came down the stairs in his white long sleeve shirt, white pants, purple high tops, and a purple yankees hat. He comes over to me and gave me roses. He places them in my lap and looks straight in my eyes. Then he circles around me and drags his hand along my back and goes up to the front of the stage and waves his hands to the audience back and forth. Then he comes over to me puts his hand on my right cheek, looks in my eyes, and strokes it. Then goes behind me and starts dancing with his dancers. He came back to me, strokes my right cheek once more, stairs into me eyes deeply, then goes behind me and gives me a hug. Then he kisses me on the head and then the lights go off. I walk off stage with one of his back up dancers and was balling my eyes. Allison and the camera man walked me back to my seat. While I was walking back, people were putting there hands out and looking at me and I was on the big screen. When I was got back to my seat all of my friends were crying saying, “I hate you” and “You lived my dream” but I was still in shock by then and still crying so I didn’t even hear half the things they said. While the concert was still going on, Allison comes back with a disc that had the whole thing on tape. I thanked her so much and finished watching the concert. After the concert people came up to me asking so many questions, asking for a rose and a mother wanted to pay me $10 for a rose. I will never forget that day. It was the best thing that could ever happen to me. When I got home, I balled my eyes out again and then I put the flowers in a vase and then I found a scarf with his name on it that was in the flowers and it says “One Less Lonely Girl”. From this day I still have the flowers hanging in my room, and still have the scarf that I wear all the time. I watch my video about 3 times a day and at my school I’m known as the girl who got on stage with Justin Bieber. I will never, ever forget that day, and how that day was the best day of my life. -@lyssabiebs Here is a video when I was the OLLG! Casey Veggies Graduates, Despite Sleeping In Class

L.A. rapper made the honor roll while on the road, his mom and teacher share. By Steven Roberts, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Casey Veggies and his mother, Cynthia Jones Photo: MTV News The last year has been a breakout one for Los Angeles MC Casey Veggies , who released his third mixtape, Sleeping in Class, in December and toured with fellow up-and-comer Mac Miller in January. What’s more amazing is that while this was going on, he was still in school. And on June 16, Veggies (or, as his diploma says, Casey Jones) graduated from Inglewood High School on the honor roll. “On the first week of school, he gave me a link to a video of one of the songs that he has [on Sleeping in Class ], so my first impression of him was good, but I was a little concerned, because of the lyrics to the song,” Casey’s senior-year English teacher Shannon Kirk told MTV News. “It’s actually kind of ironic because [sleeping in class is] the last thing he would do in class. “Casey balances his work life and his school life better than I probably would have at his age,” Kirk added of her student, who did independent study while he was on the road. “He’s pretty mature for his age, and he was able to do pretty well. [He] was one of the top students in my class.” Veggies realized that he could have quit school to pursue his dreams, but he never felt the need to. He knew he could handle it, so why not get school done? As for college, though his mother says he was accepted to four schools, he’s postponing those plans while he sees where his rap career goes. “At the end of the day, I’m just dreaming right now,” Casey said. “I’m going to stay in my dream and don’t plan on waking up. If I do, maybe I’ll grab a college degree, but right now, I’m in my own world.” Kirk wouldn’t tell us Casey’s grades, but his mother, Cynthia Jones, was thrilled that her son made the honor roll. She said that education meant everything to her and her husband, and their goal was always for Casey and his older brother, Corey, to graduate high school and attend college as they had. Corey is currently a freshman at UC Riverside, but Casey had to convince her that he could take another route. “I had no idea that his music thing was going to come about the way it has,” Jones said. “This is different to accept, but he’s doing really well, so you have to let a person follow [their dreams]. You’re only young once. “I’m excited, I’m happy for him,” she continued, “and then I’m happy he doesn’t have to juggle these two lives, because it has been a juggle for him, so now he can concentrate on one thing.”

Rise Against’s ‘Make It Stop’ Tackles Bullying, Suicide

Tim McIlrath’s band teams with ‘It Gets Better’ campaign for new video. By James Montgomery Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath Photo: Getty Images For more than a decade now, Tim McIlrath has been fighting the good fight. And during that time, he’s watched his band, Rise Against , rise from scrappy VFW Hall stalwarts to genuine rock-radio mainstays. But somewhere along the way, he began to notice RA’s agit-punk, certifiably progressive politics were getting lost in the mix. And needless to say, this bothered him. “Rise Against is a band that, we’ve played punk-rock dives and basements, that’s where we started, and at some point, we were adopted by a much-larger rock scene,” he told MTV News. “And when we were introduced to that rock scene, I found there were people that were unsure about who we are or where we stood on things … I found a lot of fans who were unsure about how we felt about if our fans were gay, and that broke my heart, to think that any one of our fans might even question for a second where we stand on that.” So, with those questions weighing on his mind, McIlrath headed into the studio with his band to begin work on what would become Rise Against’s sixth studio album, Endgame. It was during that process that the suicide of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi began making national news, bringing to light the rather-troubling issue of bullying and the plight of gay teenagers in the U.S. As he had done throughout Rise Against’s career, McIlrath knew he had to speak up — especially since none of his radio-clogging contemporaries seemed willing to do so. “When the month of September rolled around, and the wave of gay-teen suicides happened, I realized there needed to be a song about this, and also because the rock scene in general kind of fails to comment about this stuff — it sort of doesn’t comment about this stuff; it largely ignores this kind of thing,” he said. “And rock being a male-dominated, testosterone-driven place that I’ve been in the eye of the hurricane now for several years, I realized that it can be a place that can perpetuate homophobic behavior unless it’s addressed by bands like us.” McIlrath wrote “Make It Stop (September’s Children),” a song that deals explicitly with the issues of bullying, homophobia and suicides within the LGBT community. His message is one of hope: Yes, life does improve once the years of high school hell recede into memory; you’ve just got to find the strength not to give up. “The message is: It can get better, it does get better, give it a chance to get better, don’t end your life prematurely,” he said. “And don’t give credence to all these bullies that would give you all this crap and try to make your adolescence something that’s hard to deal with.” In the new video for the song, Rise Against team up with Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” campaign to help provide hope to those in need. The clip — shot in McIlrath’s former stomping grounds, Rolling Meadows High School in Illinois — follows three teens as they are pushed to the brink by their cruel classmates, and it’s only when they find themselves at the (very literal) end of their ropes, do they realize that they have much to live for, and they resolve to press on. Although McIlrath will be the first to admit that it’s just one song and one video, he said that if “Make It Stop” can even inspire even one teen from taking his or her life — regardless of sexual orientation — then he’ll consider it a success. And by speaking out, he hopes he’ll inspire others to follow suit. “I think that bullying is something that’s existed for a long time, obviously, and will, in a lot of ways, always exist, but I think it’s important now to bring this issue to light and to talk about it because there are certain dots we can connect, as Americans, to look at what is producing the bullying that is happening today,” he said. “We live in a country that has legislation that still treats the gay community as second-class citizens. That’s going to trickle down to our high school communities, it’s going to trickle down to our kids … and as long as we have these types of laws on the books, as long as we have TV networks masquerading as news stations that are perpetuating really violent and anti-gay rhetoric, that’s going to trickle down. “There are very real solutions to this, I believe. It isn’t just this intangible, ‘Oh, there’s always been bullies, there always will be bullies’ — it’s more than that, and it’s coming to a head now,” he continued. “And a lot of the suicides of September 2010 are the product of a culture and a media that we can really address, that we can really do something [about] and provide solutions for.” Share your opinion on “Make It Stop (September’s Children)” in the comments below!
