President Obama Delivers Commencement Speech At Kalamazoo Central High School

‘Be a part of something bigger than yourself,’ he urged the Michigan students, who won Get Schooled’s Race to the Top contest. By James Montgomery President Barack Obama speaks at Kalamazoo Central High School on Monday Photo: Whitehouse.gov In early March, students at Kalamazoo Central High School submitted a video to Get Schooled’s Race to the Top competition, a nationwide search to find the school most dedicated to making — as Get Schooled put it — “great strides on personal responsibility, academic excellence and college readiness.” More than 1,000 high schools across the country entered; Kalamazoo Central won. On Monday (June 7), the school finally received its prize: President Barack Obama showed up to deliver the commencement address for the class of 2010. And it was worth the wait. Delivering his first-ever high school graduation speech, President Obama lauded Kalamazoo Central’s students for their hard work, dedication and ingenuity and called the school a model for success in the 21st century. “It gives me great confidence to know that we’ve got such incredible young leaders that are going to be remaking the world in so many ways,” Obama said. “I’m here tonight because I think America has a lot to learn from Kalamazoo Central about what makes a successful school in this new century.” Obama earned cheers for those remarks and for another passage early in his commencement speech. He mentioned an article in the local newspaper that quoted a Central student named Kelsey Wilson saying that her school “never gets credit for what we do.” “Well, Kelsey, I’m here tonight because … I know, and America knows what you’ve got at Kalamazoo Central,” Obama said, singling Wilson out from the audience. “You are amazing. We know!” Obama got more than a few laughs and whoops when he admitted that, in his younger days, he “sometimes … partied too much” (“This is a cautionary tale; don’t be cheering when I say that,” he chuckled) but that he quickly learned that the only way to achieve lasting success in this world was through tireless dedication and hard work. And to that end, he also used the speech as an opportunity to give the class of 2010 some post-grad pointers (“Right now, you’re getting plenty of advice from everybody. Some of it’s helpful,” he joked. “And so I hate to pile on, but while I’m here, what the heck?”), urging them to never settle for instant gratification, take responsibility for their successes and failures, and to strive to expand their horizons — not just in the field of education, but in life as well. “Don’t just hang out with people who look like you or go to the same church as you or share the same political views. Broaden your experiences, because that’s how you’ll learn what it’s like to walk in somebody else’s shoes,” Obama said. “Be a part of something bigger than yourself … because there is work to be done, and your country needs you. We’ve got an economy to rebuild … we’ve got an oil spill to clean up, we’ve got clean energy to discover. … It’s going to be up to you. Pursue excellence in everything you do. After all, you are the Giants, and with the education you got here, there’s nothing you can’t do.” Before delivering the commencement address — which was held at nearby Western Michigan University, due to the large crowds — Obama met with Kalamazoo Central’s graduating class in a special ceremony. The school’s winning video (called “We Are the Giants” ) was selected as the winning entry by Obama and the Department of Education. Get Schooled is a national program aimed at increasing high school and college graduation rates, developed by Viacom in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

High School Cancels Speech From Helen Thomas Over Israel Remarks

|main|dl1|link1|http2F%2F www.aolnews.com 2Farticle2F19505687 BETHESDA, Md. (June 7) — A high school graduation speech by veteran White House reporter Helen Thomas has been canceled because of controversial remarks she made about Israel, the school's principal said in an e-mail Sunday. Thomas had been scheduled to speak at the June 14 graduation of Walt Whitman High School, but Principal Alan Goodwin wrote in the e-mail to students and parents that she was being replaced. The school in the Washington suburb of Bethesda, Md., hasn't picked a new speaker. “Graduation celebrations are not the venue for divisiveness,” Goodwin wrote. Thomas, a columnist for Hearst Newspapers, issued an apology on her Web site on Friday for comments that were captured on video by an interviewer for the website www.rabbilive.com . On the video dated May 27, Thomas says Israelis should “get the hell out of Palestine,” suggesting they go to Germany, Poland or the U.S. “I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians,” Thomas wrote on her site on Friday. “They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.” The national director of the Anti-Defamation League, Abraham H. Foxman, said Sunday that Thomas' apology didn't go far enough. “Her suggestion that Israelis should go back to Poland and Germany is bigoted and shows a profound ignorance of history,” Foxman said in a statement. “We believe Thomas needs to make a more forceful and sincere apology for the pain her remarks have caused.” Thomas, 89, began her long career with the wire service United Press International in 1943, and started covering the White House in 1960, according to a biography posted on her website. She became a columnist for Hearst in 2000. added by: TimALoftis

Snooki, ‘Jersey Shore’ Cast Rock MTV Movie Awards Red Carpet

Katy Perry proposes ‘threesome’ to co-hosts Snooki and MTV News’ Sway during pre-show. By Josh Wigler Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images The red carpet at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards was an even livelier affair than usual this year, thanks to Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of the “Jersey Shore,” who co-hosted the evening alongside Sway. With all of her signature outrageousness, Snooki relished in the opportunity to interview several celebrities, including “High School Musical” and “Beastly” star Vanessa Hudgens. “You two are so cute together, just got to say it,” Snooki told Hudgens of her relationship with Zac Efron , nominated for his performance in “17 Again.” “You’re so gorgeous you look amazing tonight.” Snooki wasn’t the only one giving out compliments, as Hudgens returned the favor telling the reality TV star that she was acting like “a veteran pro” on the red carpet. The night’s conversation escalated when “California Gurls” singer Katy Perry informed Snooki and Sway that they should all “have a threesome” — a proposition Sway said he “wasn’t scared” to follow through on. But the sexiest action on the red carpet occurred off-camera, as MTV’s reporters on the ground witnessed a big kiss between Snooki and her “Jersey Shore” co-star Jenni “JWoww” Farley. “She got me into it,” JWoww laughed of the kiss. Snooki, however, wasn’t all hugs and kisses. As she was about to announce the winner of the Best Fight award, Snooki turned to the crowd and shouted: “What up bitches! Yo, I have an award to give out for Best Fight, just sayin’!” The fans at home couldn’t stop talking about Snooki, taking to Twitter with comments such as “Snooki is even tinier than I thought. I wonder if she’s ever not allowed on roller coasters?” and “I’m surprised Snooki doesn’t have her poof.” But even if most eyes were on Snooki, her fellow “Jersey Shore” co-stars were enjoying the night as well. “This is amazing,” Pauly D said of the experience. “We’re so happy to be here. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect this.” Of course, Snooki remained firmly in the spotlight. Finally reunited with her “Jersey Shore” castmembers, Snooki paid a compliment to JWoww: “Your boobs look phenomenal tonight. Where did you get them?” Relive the wildest, funniest and most-jaw-dropping moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, watch revealing red-carpet interviews and get exclusive movie clips after the show at MovieAwards.MTV.com. ‘New Moon’ Men Battle For Best Male Performance At MTV Movie Awards

Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe and last year’s winner, Zac Efron, are also in the race. By Jocelyn Vena Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” Vampires, werewolves and wizards — oh my! Toss in a time-traveling Zac Efron and a letter-writing soldier, and you have the race for Best Male Performance at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , airing this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Efron might have a leg up on the other guys, since he took home this very Golden Popcorn last year for “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” but Robert Pattinson , Taylor Lautner , Daniel Radcliffe and Channing Tatum will no doubt put up a good fight. Last year’s winner returned to high school for “17 Again,” this time as a grown man trapped in a 17-year-old’s body. Can Efron prove that he’s the big man on campus again? If supernatural beings are more your thing, then “New Moon” offers up two performances that will certainly get your blood pumping — which, if you’re around Pattinson’s Edward Cullen , could be a dangerous thing. Bella Swan’s man faces off against her best friend, Jacob Black, played by a beefed-up Lautner . This is the ultimate case of Team Edward vs. Team Jacob. Of course, Lautner, Pattinson and fellow “Twilight Saga” star Kristen Stewart will be at the Movie Awards on Sunday to present an exclusive new clip from “Eclipse” ! Radcliffe is making a compelling case for the Golden Popcorn, reprising his teen-wizard role in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” There are no halves here: He can either win it or lose it. It may take a little magic for Tatum to take home the prize. He made girls cry and made Amanda Seyfried swoon in “Dear John,” but he’s up against some stiff competition in this category. Dear John — we mean Tatum — we’re rooting for you! Which guy are you pulling for to win the Golden Popcorn? Tell us in the comments! Don’t miss the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Gary Coleman Made Undeniable Impact On Pop Culture

Onetime child actor lived a complicated public life following star-making turn on ‘Diff’rent Strokes.’ By Brian Warmoth Gary Coleman Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images Gary Coleman’s career in the public eye introduced nearly as many tangled issues as his “Diff’rent Strokes” character Arnold Jackson grappled with amid laughs. The 42-year-old actor died due to an intercranial hemorrhage Friday (May 28) after being taken off life support at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, and he left behind one of television’s most iconic characters, as well as an adult life that reflected the problems he carried away from his experiences as a child actor. Coleman’s recent appearances in works like the documentary “Midgets vs. Mascots” and the TV show “Divorce Court” demonstrated the personal issues he dealt with in the shadow of a young role that defined him for many and the public displays of anger he became known for later on in life. As an actor whose early television work brought discussions about race relations and class into homes across the country, his legacy will also encompass the 1989 lawsuit he filed against his real-life adopted parents for mismanaging his money and the parodies his role as Arnold spawned, both in Coleman’s own work and elsewhere. “Diff’rent Strokes” hit on dramatic real-world topics during its run, notably inviting Nancy Reagan on during an episode focused on drugs. The show also took a stand against racism in a story where Arnold’s adopted father, Dr. Drummond, tried to get him and his brother Willis (played by Todd Bridges) into his exclusive prep-school alma mater. In that case, the criteria in the school’s entrance exam became part of the issue. During its run, “Diff’rent Strokes” revisited such themes, though, including an episode where Willis encountered more overt discrimination while trying to take a white girl to a dance. Coleman’s signature catchphrase from the 1980s — “Whatchoo talkin’ ’bout, Willis?” — cemented his prominent place in pop culture but also followed him throughout the rest of his life into works like the musical “Avenue Q,” where Coleman didn’t collaborate or necessarily approve, but was presented as a puppet landlord in the song “It Sucks to Be Me.” Coleman left his mark on video games as well, though, voice-acting the part of lemonade seller Kenny Falmouth in the cult-classic LucasArts game “The Curse of Monkey Island.” Even there, the exaggerated pouting attitude he exhibited on “Diff’rent Strokes” became part of his charm. Even the sketches and Arnold’s frequently quoted quips at his onscreen brother are a testament to the affection that still exists now for Coleman’s character. Few performers ever achieve the lasting presence in the public consciousness that Coleman grabbed playing Arnold Jackson, and his work at the age of 10 will undoubtedly outlast his talk-show and reality-television appearances later in life as he is remembered.
