This isn’t your average mary story! After 20 years of research, a pair of scientists have found proof that sticky-icky doesn’t just help ease the pain for those going through chemo treatments…it also prevents the cancer from spreading! For those opposed to using Mary because of the “effects”, they can have a good nights sleep; the form of CBD scientists used is non-toxic and non-hallucinogenic…so you won’t have to worry about your loved ones trippin’ while they’re on their treatments. According to The Huffington Post… “It took us about 20 years of research to figure this out, but we are very excited,” said Pierre Desprez, one of the scientists behind the discovery, to The Huffington Post. “We want to get started with trials as soon as possible.” Desprez, a molecular biologist, spent decades studying ID-1, the gene that causes cancer to spread. Meanwhile, fellow researcher Sean McAllister was studying the effects of Cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-toxic, non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. Finally, the pair collaborated, combining CBD and cells containing high levels of ID-1 in a petri dish. “What we found was that his Cannabidiol could essentially ‘turn off’ the ID-1,” Desprez told HuffPost. The cells stopped spreading and returned to normal. “We likely would not have found this on our own,” he added. “That’s why collaboration is so essential to scientific discovery.” “We started by researching breast cancer,” said Desprez. “But now we’ve found that Cannabidiol works with many kinds of aggressive cancers–brain, prostate–any kind in which these high levels of ID-1 are present.” Desprez hopes that clinical trials will begin immediately. “We’ve found no toxicity in the animals we’ve tested, and Cannabidiol is already used in humans for a variety of other ailments,” he said. Indeed, the compound is used to relieve anxiety and nausea, and, since it is non-psychoactive, does not cause “high” associated with THC. While marijuana advocates will surely praise the discovery, Desprez explained that it’s not so easy as just lighting up. “We used injections in the animal testing and are also testing pills,” he said. “But you could never get enough Cannabidiol for it to be effective just from smoking.” Furthermore, the team has started synthesizing the compound in the lab instead of using the plant in an effort to make it more potent. “It’s a common practice,” explained Desprez. “But hopefully it will also keep us clear of any obstacles while seeking approval.” Hopefully ignorant politicos opposed to using maryjane as a form of treatment will be more open-minded in this case. If we can help at least one family member who’s fallen to this destructive disease we’ll take that for progress! Images via shutterstock
Wanted: one hardy strain of dinosaur DNA and an endless supply of lawyers who don’t mind using outhouses. Gawker.com picked up a report from Australia’s Sunshine Coast Daily that local billionaire Clive Palmer is in “deep discussion” with the scientists who cloned Dolly the Sheep about producing a real, live dinosaur that he could house at an ambitious resort he’s developing in Coolum, in the state of Queensland. Palmer, who looks like he was cloned from the DNA of John Candy and Sir Richard Attenborough — he played Jurassic Park founder John Hammond in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film adaption of Michael Crichton’s novel — also reportedly wants to build a fully functional replica of the Titanic, which suggests to me that this guy is just looking for trouble. I should also note that Queensland does not need an actual dangerous-ass dinosaur running loose since it is already home to a staggering array of deadly and venomous creatures i ncluding the Blue Ring Octopus, the Funnel Web and Red Back spiders, the Saltwater Crocodile and Taipan and Brown snakes. Palmer has yet to verify this claim, but is reportedly expected to hold a press conference on Friday. Stay tuned. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Colin Farrell flick ‘blends Eighties cheese with Nineties snark — a combination that works better than it sounds,’ critics say. By Kara Warner Colin Farrell in “Fright Night” Photo: DreamWorks If you’ve seen the “Fright Night” trailers or are familiar with the ’85 cult classic, you know this is not your run-of-the-mill vampire movie — at least by today’s “Twilight” standards, anyway. There are no swoony undead to be found in this horror-comedy — just a lot of blood and plenty of laughs. Here at MTV News, we’ve been amped about the film from the get-go, and even featured it as part of our exclusive Sneak Peek Week leading up to the Movie Awards. The film stars Colin Farrell as a bloodthirsty vampire who heads to suburbia and terrorizes his next-door neighbor Charley, played by “Star Trek” veteran Anton Yelchin . Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays vampire convert “Evil” Ed Thompson, “Harry Potter” alum and former “Doctor Who” David Tennant is vamp-hunting showman Peter Vincent and “Solitary Man” breakout Imogen Poots portrays love interest Amy, with Toni Collette and Dave Franco also popping up. Now that the well-received reboot is finally in theaters, it’s time to see what the critics think. Grab your garlic and hold onto some holy water as we sift through the “Fright Night” reviews. The Original Story Vs. The Reboot “You’ll need a taste for nostalgia to really appreciate ‘Fright Night,’ which knowingly blends Eighties cheese with Nineties snark — a combination that works better than it sounds. Authenticity is the key to the movie’s success: the remake is actually based on a 1985 horror flick, and was written by Marti Noxon, well-known for her work on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’ One thing’s for sure: if you’re expecting the self-serious brooding of ‘Twilight,’ you’re gonna be disappointed. But if you have a soft spot for cult horror comedies like ‘The Lost Boys,’ ‘The Monster Squad,’ or even the first ‘Fright Night,’ this ought to be right up your (dark) alley. Noxon and director Craig Gillespie update the attitude for a post-‘Buffy’ generation, but their remake is generally faithful to the original.” — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News The Performances “Former ‘Doctor Who’ star David Tennant has a plum role as a Criss Angel-like Vegas cheeseball whose vampire-themed stage show might hide a special connection to vampire lore. It’s a big, fun performance overshadowed only by Farrell, who plays his character as a monster who’s learned to use an ordinary-dude exterior to blend in with his new surroundings. When he asks Yelchin for a ‘sixer,’ Farrell delivers his lines with a Matt Dillon-like flatness, but his eyes tell another story: Beneath the surface, he’s all coiled hunger and pitiless manipulation, doing what he has to do to get close to victims who, against their better judgment, want to get close to him. He creates almost unbearable tension by doing virtually nothing at all, and though ‘Fright Night’ eventually reveals him as the vampire equivalent of the f—ing shark from ‘Jaws,’ it’s never better than when it lets him poke his fin just above the surface.” — Keith Phipps, the Onion A.V. Club The Final Word “As in the earlier film, this one dances always at the edge of comedy. It especially has fun with the Rules of Vampire Behavior, which Jerry even teases Charley about. Without spoiling a single thing, I can tell you that one of the inevitable stakes through the heart in this movie is an inspired use of product placement. As vampire movies go, ‘Fright Night’ is a pretty good one.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times Check out everything we’ve got on “Fright Night.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Anthony Kiedis says he’s concerned about ‘not having enough days to practice.’ By Gil Kaufman Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis Photo: MTV News When MTV News sat down with legendary Los Angeles punk-funk icons the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Wednesday, they talked about a lot of things very confidently — their new video, fond memories of L.A.’s Forum , pygmy scientists and the state of music videos today. But the one thing they were clearly nervous about was the upcoming tour in support of their new album, I’m With You . It’s not performance anxiety: that much you can tell from the loose vibe of the just-unveiled “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” video. The Chili Peppers have seen millions of faces over the past 28 years, and rocked them all (or at least 99.9 percent of them). No, it’s the challenge of playing the new songs from the album in front of their adoring fans without enough time to get them into fighting shape. Also, they’re planning to play the new album in its entirety, top to bottom, on tour. Regarding his concerns about performing the songs, singer Anthony Kiedis said, “Not having enough days to practice. It’s very dynamic, so we really have to focus on letting each song exist unto itself with all of its beauty. There’s a lot going on.” How did Flea’s hour-long bass groove turn into “Rain Dance Maggie”? The band wrote a lot of new material for their 10th studio album, and while Flea said the tunes that made the final cut are not necessarily better than those left on the floor, “it was important to us that each song stood on its own emotionally and aesthetically, that held its own spot,” he said. “So we really have a lot of territory to cover in terms of emotional [ground].” Besides, the simple fact is they’re new songs and the group — including new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer — just don’t know them as well as classics like “Give It Away” and “Under the Bridge.” They’ve done some of the requisite prep work, according to Kiedis, who said a string of three club shows before their recent Summer Sonic fest headlining set in Japan helped loosen up the muscles. “Maggie” director Marc Klasfeld explains how the “simple and iconic” video was made. “It was so fun … it was wildly fun,” Kiedis said of the gigs. “We really didn’t know exactly what this would be like, a) because it’s been a long time and b) because we now play with Josh. We felt pretty good about everything that we had done in terms of writing and recording, but no one really knew and it was just as good as one could have ever dreamt of … It was like being 21 years old and not being able to sleep the night before a show.” Check back on MTV.com for highlights from the Q&A, including the band discussing the early inspiration for their iconic videos, where they feel they belong in music history, whether Anthony Kiedis will ever join Twitter and more! ‘Believe me, I love Apple … but iTunes shouldn’t be the answer,’ MC says at Grammy Foundation event. By Mawuse Ziegbe will.i.am Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Will.i.am is clearly tech-savvy — the MC was just named director of innovation at Intel — but the Black Eyed Peas frontman thinks artists’ interest in technology shouldn’t end with just releasing their tracks via an online retailer. The rapper/producer recently chatted it up with attorneys and music industry insiders at the Grammy Foundation’s annual Entertainment Law Initiative Luncheon in Los Angeles, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, will urged his fellow recording artists not to think of mega-successful e-retailer iTunes as a panacea for moving units. “Believe me, I love Apple … but iTunes shouldn’t be the answer,” will said, adding, “[For artists], it should be the scariest thing in the world.” The message may appear to be a bit harsh toward Steve Jobs’ empire, but “The Time (Dirty Bit)” star ultimately maintained that aspiring artists should actively embrace technology as a means of enhancing their creative expression. “We need to inspire kids to take notice of how and why a computer works,” he said. “It’s the marriage of art and science.” The BEP lyricist is already doing his part to conflate the tech and music worlds at his new post at Intel. When his partnership with the processing giant was announced, the star explained that he was looking forward to tinkering on game-changing projects. “Nearly everything I do involves processors and computers, and when I see an Intel chip I think of all the creative minds involved that help to amplify my own creativity,” Will said in a statement. “Teaming up with the scientists, researchers and computer programmers at Intel to collaborate and co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain is going to be amazing.” What do you think of will.i.am’s thoughts about artists relying on iTunes? Black Eyed Peas mastermind says he’ll ‘co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain.’ By James Montgomery Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images You might think that with his busy schedule of winning Grammys and wearing things made out of Legos , will.i.am wouldn’t exactly be looking for a day job. And yet, he’s just landed one: “Director of creative innovation” for Intel. On Tuesday, Intel — the world’s largest semiconductor chip manufacturer — announced they are partnering with the Black Eyed Peas mastermind on a “multi-year, hands-on creative and technology collaboration,” which, much like Lady Gaga’s deal with Polaroid , will lead to the development and creation of new products. “Nearly everything I do involves processors and computers, and when I see an Intel chip I think of all the creative minds involved that help to amplify my own creativity,” Will said in a statement. “Teaming up with the scientists, researchers and computer programmers at Intel to collaborate and co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain is going to be amazing.” Intel added that, in his new role with the company, Will is set to “collaborate on many creative and technology endeavors … that may include such devices as laptops, smart phones and tablets.” He also will create new music expressly for the company. “We’re thrilled to tap into the limitless creativity will.i.am brings to the table. He’s not only a brilliant artist and producer, but also an innovator pushing the bounds of technology professionally and personally,” said Deborah Conrad, Intel’s vice president and chief marketing officer. “Our partnership … is a prime example of how we want to convey and deliver the Intel experience. It’s imperative that Intel and our innovations are kept in front of the global youth culture that embraces new devices and new forms of communication and entertainment.” Related Artists Will.I.Am Black Eyed Peas
