North Carolina Lawmakers Vote To Repeal Racial Justice Act The majority Republican North Carolina House lawmakers have voted to do a way with the remaining parts of the Racial Justice Act, which provides death row inmates to contest their death sentences if they can prove that racial discrimination played a part in the sentencing. via WRAL House lawmakers have given tentative removal to repeal the remaining sections of the North Carolina’s Racial Justice Act, the 2009 law that allows death row inmates to seek to have their sentences commuted to life without parole if they can prove that racial bias played a role in their death sentence. Republican leaders repealed large portions of the law in 2012. Senate Bill 306 would repeal what’s left of the law, leaving in limbo scores of cases pending review under it. Rep. Skip Stam, R-Wake, said the RJA had become a de facto moratorium on the death penalty. “No one wants actual racial discrimination. What we don’t want also is for race to be used for a pretext – a pretext in order to stop the death penalty,” he said in Tuesday’s floor debate. “We don’t need this Racial Justice Act,” said Rep. Sarah Stevens, R-Surry. “It has created nothing but a delay in the system, a tremendous amount of cost.” While the motives of the right-wing goons are always questionable at best, this IS kind of a tricky issue. Even in his advanced age Harry Belafonte remains a rebel with a cause… without a pause! Via Page Six reports : Harry Belafonte recalled the racism he suffered in the 1950s as a performer at Waldorf-Astoria during a speech there at the Amy Winehouse Foundation Gala Thursday, saying it “used to be one of the most racist pieces of real estate in America.” Belafonte recounted being hired by Claude Philippe, who was trying to desegregate the hotel. “I went into the hotel and [executives] realized that Belafonte wasn’t, as they suspected, some Frenchman on the loose. They went ape[bleep].” The hotel fired Philippe and tried to cancel Belafonte’s contract, he said, but it was iron-clad. “I did all I could to encourage my friends from Harlem, from Bed-Stuy to come . . . it was just a sea of black folk,” Belafonte continued, explaining they placed him in the Starlight Roof to avoid “racial contamination” in the Empire Room. He ended with how far the Waldorf has come. “I now have the lifetime right to stay in any Hilton hotel anywhere in the world for free if I would just keep my mouth shut and not tell this story.” We love this guy! The boys in the bing are going to have fun with this guy Ex-Tennis Pro Sentenced To Over 11 Years For Forcing 4 Children Into Slavery Via NYDailyNews A former tennis pro accused of fraudulently bringing four children from the African nation of Togo to the U.S. and forcing them to work as slaves in his Michigan home was sentenced Monday to more than 11 years in federal prison. Jean-Claude Toviave, who didn’t apologize when provided the opportunity to speak at his sentencing hearing in Detroit, also was ordered to pay two of the children $60,000 each. Prosecutors asked U.S. District Judge Arthur Tarnow to sentence Toviave to the maximum sentence within the guidelines, and he did, handing down a 135-month sentence, with credit for about two years of time served. “I can’t get a read on you,” Tarnow told Toviave. “I can’t tell if you understand what you did was really wrong.” The four children emigrated from Togo in 2006 with fraudulent immigration paperwork that listed them as being Toviave’s biological children, which they are not. The victims said Toviave beat them with toilet plungers, broomsticks and electrical cords and starved them if they didn’t follow his orders. They were forced to vacuum, iron, cook, clean and shine shoes at the home in Ypsilanti, near Ann Arbor, for nearly five years until January 2011. One of the unidentified victims had his statement read aloud in court: “The physical torture, beating me and starving me, you inflicted was so painful that I prayed at night that God would either help me to be free or allow your assaults to kill me,” wrote the unnamed victim. “The pain is something I will never forget. In the midst of your verbal and physical assaults, you worked the four of us to death.” We would have liked to see ol’ boy get sentenced to a lil’ more time, but we’re glad the victims got the justice they deserved. You need more people sir… Drew Peterson Sentenced To 38 Years For Murder Of Kathleen Savio Via ABCNews Former Illinois cop Drew Peterson yelled, “I did not kill Kathleen!” during the sentencing phase of his trial today — and then a judge sentenced him to 38 years in jail for killing her. The sentence came after Will County Judge Edward Burmila denied Peterson a re-trial in the killing of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004. Peterson had faced as many as 60 years in prison. At his sentencing, after Peterson shouted that he did not kill his wife, someone in the courtroom yelled in reply, “Yes you did!” according to ABC News Chicago station WLS. Burmila then ordered that person to leave the courtroom. Peterson went on to claim that police “altered evidence” in his case and “intimidated witnesses and scared my children.” “I love Kathy,” he said. “She was a good mom. … She didn’t deserve to die.” Drew also said he planned to get a tattoo on his back reading “no good deed goes unpunished”. Drew might not have done any good deeds, but the victims’ families are more than happy to see him punished. Savio’s nephew Michael Lisak said afterwards that his aunt “can finally rest in peace.” “Today is a day for battered women, not just Kathleen Savio,” Lisak said. “Your voice will be heard. My aunt’s voice was heard through the grave. She would not stop. They will listen to you now.” Peterson’s sister Cassandra Cales had a blunt message for the newly convicted murderer. “Game over, Drew,” she said. “He can wipe the smirk off his face. It’s time to pay.” LMAO @ “Game over, Drew” Although Peterson was not convicted of killing his fourth wife, Stacy, hopefully this sentence will be bring some semblance of justice to her family as well. Tony Farmer, High School Basketball Recruit, Collapses in Court at Sentencing

Tony Farmer – an 18-year old rising senior at Garfield Heights High School in Ohio who was ranked as one of the top 100 high school basketball recruits in the country – was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday for kidnapping and felonious assault. William Balfour Sentenced to Trio of Life Sentences

William Balfour will never be a free man again. A judge in Chicago made sure of that today. The 31-year old who was found guilty in May of killing Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences today, appearing inside a courtroom and maintaining his innocence until the end. Hudson was also present at the sentencing. During the hearing, a judge looked directly at Balfour and told him: “Your soul is as barren as dark space.” Balfour was convicted of triple murder, home innovation and residential burglary after he went into a jealous rage in 2008 because he believed his ex-girlfriend has received a present from another man.

Bye Beyotch! Jerry Sandusky On Suicide Watch After Guilty Verdict In Molestation Trial

We heard it’s nice this time of year in hell Jerry Sandusky was put on suicide watch after being found guilty of 45 criminal charges related to the sexual assault of 10 boys over a 15 year period. Sandusky, 68, was put in protective custody in an area separate from other inmates as he waits for his sentencing, CNN reported. He will be under close watch until that hearing. In addition, Sandusky’s defense team announced plans to appeal the verdict that will likely put the former Penn State assistant football coach in jail for the rest of his life. Sandusky was convicted Friday of 45 of 48 counts related to the abuse, after two days of jury deliberation. Those close to him — even his attorney — were almost certain the man would be convicted. They should just release him into the general prison population. End of problem. Source
