According to NY Daily News reports : A double amputee allegedly gunned down a Walmart worker after being asked to put his service dog on a leash — before being caught fleeing on his motorized scooter by cops. Daniel Pirtle, 45, was said to have been asked by assistant manager Jason Mahi, 33, to place the animal under control after entering the store in Anchorage, Alaska, on Saturday afternoon. His request sparked an argument, during which Pirtle pull out a weapon and shoot Mahi in the stomach, witnesses said. Trying to escape on his electric vehicle, Pirtle was nabbed by cops close to the building’s entrance. They arrested him, placed him in handcuffs and confiscated his handgun. Army veteran Sergeant Carlos Morales told the Anchorage Daily News the gunshot “sounded like somebody dropped a big box”. Morales, who was in the store with his wife and children, said he rushed to help Mahi who had fallen on the floor. “He said, ‘I can’t feel my feet.’ He just kept talking about his kids,” said Morales, before adding: “My kids, my son,’ that’s basically all he said. Everyone else tried to keep him awake.” Mahi was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery. He is now in a stable condition. Anchorage Police Sgt Cameron Hokenson said Pirtle was charged with first-degree assault and fourth-degree weapons misconduct. He is now being held at Anchorage Jail on bail of $50,000. His dog has been taken temporarily to a female police officer’s home. Walmart spokesman Dan Fogleman said the shooting was a “senseless, unprovoked act of violence”. SMH. Thank God the man lived! We keep trying to tell you that race matters ! Black and Latino students in NYC who attend poverty stricken schools are more likely to end up with teachers who have received unsatisfactory ratings. Via NYPost reports : Teachers who received bad performance ratings in the past school year were likelier to be teaching in high-poverty schools, or in schools with high percentages of black, Hispanic or low-achieving students, a new analysis found. The StudentsFirstNY report on the 3.2 percent of teachers were rated “unsatisfactory” — known as a “U-rating” — for the 2011-12 school year found large differences in how they were distributed throughout the school system. The analysis found that students in high-poverty schools were at least three times more likely to be taught by a U-rated teacher than were students in low-poverty schools. “An ineffective teacher in any classroom is a failure of the system at the expense of students,” said StudentsFirstNY Executive Director Micah Lasher, a former legislative liaison for Mayor Bloomberg. “A concentration of ineffective teachers serving specific student populations is an injustice.” Among the group’s eight recommendations, including having the city and teachers’ union reach a deal on a new teacher evaluation system by next week’s Jan. 17 deadline, are financial incentives for good teachers who stay in high-needs schools. Failing to reach a deal by the deadline would cost the city at least $250 million in state education aid. StudentsFirstNY also calls for a cap on the number of ineffective teachers who are allowed to remain at one school from year to year. The city currently does have at least two programs that offers incentives for teachers who agree to work in high needs schools – one that offers recruitment and tuition reimbursements, and the other that offers $15,000 in housing support in return for a 3-year commitment. The teachers’ union has also said that high concentrations of U-rated teachers can be caused by other factors — such as antagonism between a principal and his or her teachers. A 2011 investigation by the Department of Education found that the current principal at Fordham HS for the Arts – where 20 percent of teachers received a U-rating in 2011-12 – tried to force out teachers she didn’t like by giving them bad ratings without actually having observed their teaching. So the good news is not all these teachers are really as bad as it looks, but the bad news is enough of them earned their bad ratings for us to be fairly certain that our kids are not receiving the same quality of education that white students in more affluent schools are getting? Yeah… This doesn’t seem like a newsflash, but this needs to be fixed quickly. We wouldn’t be surprised if they discovered the same kind of inequalities in cities like Chicago where youth violence is rampant either. We need to be concerned about who is teaching our kids! According to The Washington Post , Wendel Palmer abused a young girl from the youth choir he directed in his church from 2004-2006…his lawyer’s asking why the victim’s only reporting it now!?!?! The Metropolitan Police Department officer accused of sexually abusing a young girl in the youth choir he directed would send the rest of the group to the store and order his victim to stay behind, according to court documents. Wendel Palmer, 44, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of first-degree child sexual abuse in D.C. Superior Court. According to court documents, the abuse occurred while Palmer directed the youth choir at Bethuel Temple Church of Christ Apostolic in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Avenue SE. During rehearsals, the court documents say, Palmer would tell the girl to stay with him in the pastor’s office while the rest of the choir members went to a store. The assaults began in August 2004 when the girl was 11, according to court documents. They allegedly ran through August 2006, when she was 13. She told investigators there were “too many incidents to count,” court documents say. Other incidents allegedly took place elsewhere in the D.C. area. Police learned of the alleged abuse when the mother of the alleged victim, who is now 19, called a hotline in March 2012 to report it, according to court documents; Detectives interviewed the woman days later. Palmer’s attorney, Harold Martin, argued Thursday that the allegations were “not specific” regarding the date and time of the offenses. Martin also asked why the alleged victim waited until 2012 to report the abuse. “That should raise some question about the level of proof,” said Martin, who also represents the D.C. police union. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah McClellan said her office has no reason to question the woman’s credibility. It was unclear whether Palmer was still associated with the church. Calls to the church were not answered, and a woman who answered a Pennsylvania number listed for the pastor, Winston R. Palmer, said he did not want to talk to a reporter. It could not be determined whether the pastor and Wendel Palmer are related. Bethuel Temple has churches in Southeast Washington and Harrisburg, Pa. The name on the church marquis is Bishop William Rutherford Palmer Jr., who died in 2010 at the age of 75. His wife declined to comment when asked about Wendel Palmer. Several other people listed in public records as relatives also declined to speak to a reporter. In an interview, Pennsylvania Magistrate Judge Robert Jennings III said he knows both Wendel Palmer and the pastor, though he declined to detail their relationship to each other. Jennings said he has attended the Harrisburg church for about five years and has been to the Anacostia church. Asked about the allegations, he said: “I find that hard to believe, I have to say that. I can’t fathom it. I think he is a fine, upstanding young man.” McClellan said Palmer tried to elude police when they tried to arrest him, a claim Martin denied. Court documents say that a sergeant who knew that Palmer was wanted on an arrest warrant discreetly called 911 when she saw him inside the police union office on Wednesday, but he drove away before he could be apprehended and sped away from the sergeant as she followed him in her personal car. Palmer later turned himself in, according to court documents. Palmer is a 22-year veteran of the department who had been assigned to the Sixth District. D.C. Police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump confirmed Palmer’s arrest but declined to answer further questions about the investigation. Palmer, who joined the police force in 1990, got into trouble in 2004 after a woman flagged him down while on patrol to tell him about a domestic dispute. City records show that Palmer allowed her into his marked cruiser, took her to a restaurant and brought her back to her apartment. The woman’s husband and aunt came home and found them, according to the records. They filed a complaint with police, who suspended him for 35 days for conduct unbecoming an officer, failure to obey orders and neglect of duty. In 2009, the D.C. Office of Employee Appeals reduced the suspension to 13, awarding Palmer back pay. Palmer, of Fort Washington, has six children through a previous marriage that ended in 2011, according to court records. The records show that his ex-wife took custody of the children — two are now adults — in June 2011. A woman who answered the phone at a number listed for his ex-wife, LaVera Palmer, declined to comment Thursday. Palmer was ordered held in jail ahead of a hearing scheduled for Tuesday. He has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal charges. Magistrate Judge Karen Howze granted Martin’s request to have Palmer isolated from other inmates while jailed, which is common when police are arrested. The D.A.’s office has charged Katt with evading a police officer while driving in a reckless manner, a felony. As we previously reported, Katt’s accused of leading police on a wild chase through the streets of Sacramento … while riding a three-wheeled motorcycle. Moments after the chase, Katt stopped by a Target where he slapped an employee in the face. It’s the second bench warrant issued for the comedian in less than a month — back in December, a Seattle judge called for Katt’s arrest after he missed court for that crazy bar fight. According to The Daily Mail , folks are buying it with a five-finger discount so they can keep gettin’ high: The pricey detergent – which has been America’s number one since it was first released in 1946 – is known as ‘liquid gold’ on the streets, with a 150-ounce bottle going for either $5 cash or $10 of weed or crack cocaine. In grocery stores, it sells at upwards of $20 per 150-ounce bottle, about 50 per cent more than the average liquid detergent so is easily sold on to privately-owned retail stores for a profit. Police first reported the strange crime wave sweeping the nation in March of last year and were baffled as to the sudden surge in theft of the highly-recognizable brand. An investigation headed by Sergeant Aubrey Thompson in Maryland found some explanation as to why. The bright orange jugs became ad hoc street currency due to the fact it was such a popular house-hold name – whatever the income – and people were not prepared to forego buying the brand even in recessionary times because it was associated with quality. ‘It doesn’t matter where the clothes come from, if you wash them with Tide, they do have almost this prestige wash to them,’ said Maru Kopelowicz, a global creative director at Saatchi & Saatchi. During his investigation, Sgt Thompson found that the detergent was flying off the shelves. Speaking about one grocery store in suburban Bowie, he told New York Magazine: ‘They were losing $10,000 to $15,000 a month, with people just taking it off the shelves.’ Also, stealing the detergent garners a low penalty conviction if thieves are caught – as opposed to mugging someone in the street, for example, or breaking into someone’s home. ‘They are smart. They are creative. They want high reward and low risk,’ Sgt Thompson said. ‘Theft convictions can come with a maximum fifteen-year prison sentence, but the penalty for shoplifting is often just a small fine, with no jail time. ‘It’s the new dope. You can get richer and have less chance of doing jail time.’ Unlike other commonly-stolen items such as smartphones or electronioc devices, bottles of the cannot be traced, and they are not locked up but freely available to take off the shelves as they are so popular. From the East Coast to the West, some CVS drug stores have begun locking up their detergent while some cities have set up special task forces to tackle the recent spree. Last year, a Minnesota man was arrested after allegedly stealing more than $25,000 worth of the product. ‘We don’t have any insight as to why the phenomenon is happening, but it is certainly unfortunate,’ said Procter and Gamble spokeswoman Sarah Pasquinucci said in March. Reilly , Wreck-It Ralph’s journey begins when he tires of always playing the bad guy to Fix-It Felix ( 30 Rock’ s Jack McBrayer ) and heads off on a long, strange (but family friendly) trip through multiple generations of video games to prove that he’s got the right stuff to be a hero. What is somewhat surprising is to see a retired Army sergeant leading the charge with a response to the controversial song in rap form! Leo Dunson, a five-year combat veteran, recorded the trac, “Change Your Name” after hearing Soulja Boy’s “Let’s Be Real.” Basically, Dunson – who raps under the name Sgt. Dunson – comes at Soulja early and often (NSFW lyrics): Sgt. Dunson – Change Your Name Dunson says Soulja Boy’s song is, “The most ignorant thing I’ve heard in so long” and is especially offensive with the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 looming. He says a petition to get Soulja Boy’s music banned from all U.S. military bases is getting support from civilians and all branches of the armed forces. Soulja Boy is, of course, legally free to rap about whatever the heck he wants, but Sgt. Dunson and U.S. troops are certainly free to not like it and hit back.
