Weekend Receipts: Shrek the Third

Not once in 2009 did a movie lead the box office for three or more straight weeks. Here in 2010, though, that trick has been turned by Avatar , Alice in Wonderland and now Shrek Forever After — the animated sequel easily held off newcomers Get Him to the Greek and Killers to retain the top spot for a third straight week. And while other new releases Marmaduke and Splice failed to crack the top-ten, the biggest loser of the weekend was — once again — MacGruber : The comedy shed over 2,300 screens and dropped 93.9 percent in its third week. Yikes squared. Say a prayer for Will Forte and click ahead for some weekend receipts.

Friday Box Office: Forever and Ever

Stop me if this sounds familiar: Thanks to some lesser-than-expected dollars from the new releases, Shrek Forever After remained in first place on Friday night and should wind up easily winning the weekend — the Dreamworks hit pulled down $7 million to pace one of the weakest summer fields in recent memory. How weak? Runner up Get Him to the Greek grabbed just $6 million and that was still as much as other new releases Marmaduke ($3.5 million in 6th) and Splice ($2.5 million in 8th) combined . Meanwhile, Katherine Heigl haters rejoice: Killers landed in third with $5.7 million. Imagine how much better it could have done with “The” in the title! The top-five after the jump.

SATC 2 Backlash Hits France

It was only a matter of time before Sex and the City 2 hit France in a sort of perfect storm of privilege, and now this: Warner Bros. reportedly recruited a dozen French authors to speak at a Parisian café as part of a promotional event, but the company to which WB outsourced the promo “didn’t mention the authors in media alerts, stuck them in a small, dark, back room, and didn’t provide a microphone or turn down the music during the talk and, worse, said nothing when the café made the writers pay for drinks.” Sacre bleu! When even the French are going to war with you, that is trouble. [ NYP ]

Sex and the City 2 Flops at the Box Office

Blame it on the economy, the contrived storylines, the self-centered characters or a lovable green ogre. But Sex and the City 2 tanked at the box office this weekend, failing to even bump Shrek Forever After from the top spot. The much-hyped sequal pulled in $32.1 in three days, far below the $56.8 million the original opened with in 2008. The film, which takes the core four to the Middle East, has received few positive reviews; The New York Times said it “isn’t much fun at all,” while USA Today slammed it as “tasteless.” On Rotten Tomatoes, only 15% of critics polled said they liked the flick. THG’s take? There are only so many times you can find Samantha’s sexual puns witty; while focusing on a quartet of rich, successful, whining women tends to get old. At this point, the franchise is more about fashion (a lot of which you can find in our Style Store !) than anything else. But is that enough to garner a third film? And would you even wanna see one? Sound off now, as you check out scenes from Sex and the City 2 below…

Weekend Receipts: Shrek Beats The City

There must be something in the water over at Dreamworks Animation. As happened with the studio’s How to Train Your Dragon in the spring, Shrek Forever After appears like it has legs and knows how to use them. Who — besides David Poland — woulda thunk it?! The big green orge managed to beat the Four Ogres of the Apocalypse — better known as the gals from Sex and the City 2 — over the weekend, meaning Jeffrey Katzenberg is probably having a green-colored cosmopolitan right about now. Mix one up yourself and get ready for some weekend receipts.

Sex and the City 2: The Myth of the Critic-Proof Movie

Ah, Memorial Day Weekend. The unofficial start of summer has finally arrived and so to have the annual think pieces about the relevancy of film critics. If it feels like this is happening earlier here in 2010 than it did in 2009, that’s because it is. The debate didn’t start last year until Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen dropped a big turd on multiplexes — it had a 20 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes — yet still garnered $836 million worldwide from viewers. This year the party got started with Sex and the City 2 , a film so roundly hated by film critics that it has drawn comparisons to feces, terrorism and rape. And yet for every negative review, it feels like another 100 tickets are sold. The conventional wisdom states that Sex and the City 2 is “critic-proof,” but that implies that critics matter to a film’s financial success. Spoiler: They don’t.

Sex Sells, to the Tune of $14.2 Million

Sex and the City 2 may be critically lambasted , but it still took in $14.2 million yesterday — the 6th best Thursday opening ever, behind assorted Star Wars, Matrix , and Indiana Jones sequels and the Christmas Day opening of Marley and Me . Here’s another translation : after this weekend, expect the third one to be greenlit faster than Sarah Jessica Parker can make a Catskills-ready crack about Samantha’s menopause. [ EW ]

REVIEW: Yes, Sex and the City 2 Really is as Horrific as You’ve Heard

As I suffered through the nearly two-and-a-half-hour runtime of Sex and the City 2, I kept asking myself: What might I have done wrong, in a past life or in this one, that I deserve to have my eyeballs seared by Sarah Jessica Parker’s loony desert-princess getups? To suffer the agony of watching four actresses who have previously given me so much pleasure become undone by crap dialogue and, in one case, an overinflated ego? To gaze upon a couple of amazingly well-groomed camels and realize that they have better hairdos than the human movie stars astride them?
