Eminem Says Recovery Will Not Have Skits

MC also tells Shade 45 about Recovery LP, collaborators. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Nigel Parry Eminem has said that when he opened up his planned album Relapse 2 to a variety of producers, he was inspired to not just change the direction of the LP, but rethink the project completely: He buried the Relapse sequel and started working on Recovery , which will be out on June 22. “I kinda went back to the lab on that whole concept,” Em told radio personality Angela Yee on her Shade 45 show “The Morning After,” on Thursday (April 29). “As I started getting to work with different producers and sh–, the very sound changed and I kinda turned the corner.” Em rattled off an impressive array of trackmasters that he secured for Recovery, including Dr. Dre, DJ Khalil, Boi-1da — who produced the album’s first single, “Not Afraid,” which debuted Thursday — and Havoc from Mobb Deep. “He sent me a couple of tracks,” Em, a huge Mobb Deep fan, said of Havoc. “They were both cool, but one of them was that sh– and I had to do something to it. I’m just happy I got to work with him.” Jim Jonsin (T.I., Lil Wayne) also worked on the LP. “He was open to ideas,” Jonsin told Mixtape Daily . “He was real respectful to my craft. He let me do what I do. He asked me ideas on some of the lyrics. We had ideas for lyric changes. Certain words may or may not work on radio. We talked about that. He had a setup outside of the room to do production, but I’d rather be in the room where he was at, and he was cool with that. And I knocked out a couple of joints in there while he was in there with me. He was pretty open and he let me do my thing. He did his thing. It was a pretty good experience. “We touched on something that I haven’t done anything like that before,” Jonsin added. “It’s unique in a way for myself. It’s a place I’ve been wanting to go, and I’m so happy he allowed it to go down. He played a huge part in the record. Without him on it, it’s not the same. I don’t wanna give up too much about what it is and what direction.” Slim Shady told Yee that Recovery is diverse and doesn’t have a uniform sound. “There’s a variety of different things, different moods and things like that on there,” he said of the LP. “There’s not just one overall sound. It’s a bunch of different sh–.” Another surprise Em dropped about the album: for the first time, he will not have any skits. The often-hilarious segments had become a hallmark of a Slim Shady’s albums. What do you think Eminem’s Recovery LP will be like? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Eminem

Eminem Calls Relapse ‘Ehh’ In New Song, ‘Not Afraid’

‘Let’s be honest, that last Relapse CD was ehh, ‘ Em raps on lead single from Recovery. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ Getty Images Eminem unveiled “Not Afraid,” the first single from his forthcoming Recovery album , on Thursday morning (April 29), and the track is a strong departure from the usual lead cuts Slim Shady delivers: There are no jabs at pop-culture icons, no jovial goofballing. Mr. Mathers is reflective and remorseful over the Boi-1da-produced track. “It’s been a ride, I guess I had to go to that place to get to this one. Some of you might still be in that place. If you trying to get out, follow me,” he says, talking at the beginning of the track. As the raps starts to kick in, Em threatens to “tear down” those who looked down on him. “You can try to read my lyrics off of this paper before I lay ’em/ But you won’t take the sting out these words before I say ’em. “I’m not afraid/ To take a stand,” he continues on the chorus. “Everybody come take my hand/ We’ll walk this road together through the storm/ Whatever weather come the war/ Just letting you know that you’re not alone/ Holla if you feel been down the same road.” On the second verse, Em admits to some artistic missteps and declares that his last album, Relapse, was a bit of letdown. “To the fans, I never let you down again, I’m back/ I promise to never go back on that promise,” the MC says in the song’s second verse. “In fact, let’s be honest/ That last Relapse CD was ehh / Perhaps I ran them accents into the ground/ Relax, I ain’t going to do that now.” Later in the verse, Em talks about his personal struggles. “But I think I’m still trying to figure this crap out/ Thought I had it mapped out, but I guess I didn’t/ It’s time to exorcise these demons / These muthaf—as are doing jumping jacks now.” As the song comes to a close, Em says he doesn’t want any more drama and wants to focus on raising his family. “I can’t just keep living this way,” he sings. “So starting today, I’m breaking out of this cage / I’m standing up, I’mma face my demons/ I’m manning up, I’mma hold my ground/ I’ve had enough, I’m so fed up/ Time to put my life back together right now.” Recovery is slated for a June 22 release. Trey Songz Recalls His Barbershop Days On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I cut everybody’s hair for the prom,’ the singer says on new MTV show, premiering Saturday. By Jayson Rodriguez Trey Songz Photo: MTV News We all know Trey Songz is a ladies man, but the extent of his devotion to the opposite sex hasn’t truly been revealed until now. “When I was 17 I did my girlfriend’s eyebrows,” the singer confesses during the premiere of MTV’s new show “When I Was 17,” which premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. and also features Khloe Kardashian and Perez Hilton. But to be fair, Trey Songz was a barber-in-training at the time, keeping the fellas and the ladies looking sharp. It all started when he devised a plan to receive early dismissal from school and enrolled in a trade that he thought he would be able to take lightly. Instead, the Virgina native found himself with an intense schedule that included learning the finer points of hair care, from cutting heads to, well, waxing eyebrows. His skills eventually became so in demand that his friends lined up at his house to score haircuts before prom. “I cut everybody’s hair for the prom,” he recalled. “That whole week of prom, like every day, probably at least five to 10 guys would come over to the house to get a shape-up,” his cousin Jay chimed in. The downside to his popularity with his clippers resulted in some hotheaded customers — literally! “My clippers got so hot, I remember I messed my homeboy’s head up so bad,” he recalled, smiling. “He had scars for, like, the next two days. [ Traces his hair line to show where the damage was done. ] All that. My bad.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Trey Songz, Khloe Kardashian and Perez Hilton — premieres Saturday (May 1) at 11 a.m. on MTV. Related Artists Trey Songz

Rick Ross Calls Teflon Don Jay-Z Collabo ‘An Atomic Bomb’

The Bawse denies rumors that the new Jay duet is ‘Maybach Music 3.’ By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Kelly Marino Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Swizz Beatz-designed Christian Louboutin white shoes, a black motorcycle jacket specially made by Fubu and a white tank top you could find at any swap meet or flea market — Rick Ross had his swagger up on the set of his F. Gary Gray-directed video for “Super High.” The clip plays off the film “Easy Rider” and finds the Miami native scooping up sexy Stacey Dash like ice cream from Cold Stone. Ross woos her from her biker beau. During some downtime on the set, Ross explained that he’s trying to keep a lot of the ins and outs of his June 29 LP Teflon Don on lock until it drops, but the Bawse did disclose more about his collaboration with Jay-Z. “The majority of the details of the album I’ve been trying to keep under wraps so the fans can savor the music that much more,” Ross said. “I most definitely have confirmed Jay-Z being on the album. [The song] is like an atomic bomb. I’m just waiting to push the button. Shout-out to Roc Nation. Shout-out to Kanye West.” Ross said he and Jay recorded the song in Sin City as Jigga’s tour was coming to a close. “The funny thing is the way the record was done,” Ross said. “I followed him to a few Blueprint 3 Tour dates. I was chillin’ in the back, smoked out. As soon as he gets offstage, we was chillin’, vibing. His last date, which was in Vegas, he killed the show. We left the show, went to Tao for the afterparty. It was 30 bottles of Ace of Spades [champagne]. He left there, went and killed the craps table, the poker table. Then we got in the studio, and he laced me. It was the most phenomenal verse. “It’s not ‘Maybach Music 3,’ ” Ross revealed. “You could kill the rumors. This is something totally unexpected, and we talking that talk. I’m just excited, man. I’m expecting big things from this Teflon Don project.” Are you excited to hear new music from Rick Ross? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

N.O.R.E.’s ‘R.I.P. Guru’ Pays ‘Respect’ To Late Gang Starr MC

‘I’m not big on funerals, so this is my way of going to the funeral,’ Nore tells MTV News of tribute track. By Shaheem Reid N.O.R.E. Photo: Ray Tamarra/Getty Images N.O.R.E. released a tribute freestyle Tuesday (April 20) with Iman Thug called “R.I.P. Guru.” Nore said he was scheduled to go in the studio and wanted to pay homage to the Gang Starr MC after hearing about his death . “I didn’t even think about being the first one,” Nore told MTV News about putting out a Guru tribute record. “I had to do a freestyle for [producer] Clark Kent, and I said, ‘What’s more appropriate?’ Handle two birds with one stone … and send a rest-in-peace shout-out to Guru at the same time. “I just came back from Vegas,” he added. “I wasn’t by a phone or a computer. I wasn’t using it. When I finally got back in and got the news, I was stunned. Guru was a great guy. I got drunk with him a lot. He always showed love, respect. I wanted to pay my respect. I’m not big on funerals, so this is my way of going to the funeral.” In the freestyle, Nore raps about sharing great times with the trailblazing MC, who succumbed to cancer on Monday. N.O. told us they shared a mutual respect. “I just remember eating at a diner somewhere and him reciting the vocals to ‘T.O.N.Y.,’ ” N.O.R.E. recalled. “How ironic is it that I just went to the studio to finish the touches on ‘T.O.N.Y. Part 2’? That was always his favorite record. It’s ironic that the day I finish ‘T.O.N.Y. Part 2,’ I finish a tribute freestyle to his legacy. One of the wildest memories is us being in the diner and him running up to me saying [my lines]: ‘N—as tried to sh– on me, make history.’ It was always mind-blowing to me. He was a general, he was a person I always looked up to, whose music I grew up on. For him to know my sh– was a blessing.” Nore cited “Just to Get a Rep” as one of his favorite Gang Starr records . “When I heard ‘Stickup kids is out to tax,’ that’s exactly what was going on,” he explained. “Being a stickup kid was even doper than being a drug dealer. Everybody goes out there to get their bread, and the stickup kids get ’em. The ‘Dwyck’ joint with Nice and Smooth — he just was a general. We rhymed over ‘Mass Appeal’ [on the tribute freestyle], so that was one of my favorites. He meant a lot. We lost another legend.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below. Lil Wayne’s ‘I’m Single’: Meet The Women In The Video

Tammy Torres and Mizz Na’Tasha play Weezy’s mistress and wife, respectively. By Shaheem Reid Tammy Torres in Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” Photo: Nino Brown Now that Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” video has premiered, people are curious about beauties in the clip vying for his affection. Playing the part of the mistress is model Tammy Torres. Torres, an alum of XXL ‘s Eye Candy section, has also appeared in other magazines, such as Smooth. She’s also appeared in other music videos, but her most popular cameo also comes courtesy of Mr. Weezy via his “Mrs. Officer” clip. Playing the part of Weezy’s wifey in the video is the woman the Twitter nation knows as Mizz Na’Tasha — however, Natasha Salimi said “I’m Single” is her curtain call. She’s retiring from the modeling game and focusing on going to school to study entertainment law. “I used to model. I been in Smooth magazine. My last cover is out right now. I’m in AsIs magazine. I was in ‘Notorious’ the movie. I was in Busta Rhymes’ video for ‘Arab Money.’ But I also work on Wall Street and I go to school. That’s my main focus now. The modeling is cool. … You gotta have a backup plan.” Na’Tasha told us “I’m Single” is actually her favorite record off of the No Ceilings mixtape, and she had a blast going psycho in the clip. “It was fun because I got to act a little crazy, stabbing the cake and throwing stuff,” she said. “Scoob was telling me to try and act as natural as possible and think about if I had something like that that happened in the past,” she explained. ” ‘Let it happen on its own.’ I tried to really put myself in the position of the role I was playing. Everything was laid-back, it was cool. Scoob is a great director. It went by quick. We came up with it as we were acting. I was like, ‘Wait, why don’t I act like I’m stabbing the poster then stab the cake?’ ” Related Artists Lil Wayne

While some were confused by the title, rest assured that all parties involved are not turning their backs on the mixtape circuit — after all, the project is a mixtape and both Drama and MLK have several other mixtapes with various other artists on deck in the coming weeks. But Drama declined to elaborate on the meaning behind the title. “Take it how you wanna take it,” Drama, who describes the quality of King Uncaged as being so dope it’s “ridiculous,” said about any controversy the name has caused. “I’mma let Tip explain.” However, Drama did say that he was one of the people championing Tip’s return to the circuit. “We been talking about it for a minute — a long time,” Dram said. “It’s been quite a while since Tip has a done a Gangsta Grillz.
