Erykah Badu Says It’s ‘Wonderful’ Rappers Are Remixing ‘Window Seat’

‘I love Ricky’s verse,’ the singer says of Rick Ross’ contribution. By Shaheem Reid Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Erykah Badu is a fan of the Bawse &#*212; she gives kudos to Rick Ross for his freestyle verse over her popular “Window Seat” record for the remix. “I think it’s wonderful; if they feel it, that’s when its real,” Badu told Mixtape Daily about rappers jumping on her song. She then singled out Ross. “I love Ricky’s verse,” she added. “Sh– kinda foul while I’m sitting in the isle,” Ross raps on the track. “People taking pictures of me like I’m going outta style/ Anyhow I began to yawn, the human bong/ Kick my Clarks off and recline just like a don/ Hat low, eyes closed, got my hoodie on/ As we take off I think back about all my n—as gone/ From my window seat, the view I got, I think I see tomorrow/ Always been an owner of the watch you wanna borrow/ Always with the woman that you following on Twitter/ First class sold out, but I’m still a n—-a!” Ross spoke to MTV News about what attracted him to the soulful song. “I been getting a lot of questions and a lot of feedback off of the Erykah Badu ‘Window Seat’ record. People wanna know what inspired me to get on the record. It surprised them I was on the record. But to me, the record is just a beautiful song. Erykah Badu is continuing her legacy of making melodic music. That’s the kind of music I’m naturally attracted to. I heard the beat, I heard the flow, of course I saw the video — it’s ingenious. It’s magnanimous. It’s magnificent. I love the video. It’s what art is really about, what hip-hop is really about — taking something that’s really nothing and making it invaluable. She just took a stroll through the park and made it valuable. That’s what hip-hop is. I feel that’s what music is. I jumped on the remix and it felt good. I just put one in the air. Ya boy did what he did. … Ain’t nothing change. It’s the boss Ricky Ross.” Ross is still working on his new album Teflon Don and has announced Jay-Z, Diddy and Kanye West as collaborators. Ne-Yo appears on the first single “Super High” and F. Gary Gray is slated to direct the video . Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah, Part Two: Return of the Ankh is in stores now. Mary J. Blige Tells Oprah ‘If You Save Women, You Save The World’

R&B superstar goes on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ to discuss her Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Shaheem Reid Mary J. Blige on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Photo: Harpo Kicking off her appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Tuesday (April 13), Mary J. Blige sang her cover of the classic Led Zeppelin tune “Stairway to Heaven.” But the real reason behind her visit was to talk about her struggles growing up in New York and how she hopes to empower young women. “I could have been dead because of this environment,” she said about her childhood in Yonkers. “But because of this environment, I’m alive too. I remember one day being there. I was sitting there, and it was a cloudy day. I started praying. I was really depressed that day, and I was crying, and I was like, ‘Father, if there’s a way out, please show me.’ As I was asking him that day, the sky … opened up and the sun came down. And I knew at that moment I was going to get out.” As a superstar musician, Blige started the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now, which allows young women to seek the support and education she craved as a child. “It’s a dream come true,” she told Oprah. “My thing is, if you save women, you save the world. This is probably one of the most important places, because when women are looking for jobs, a lot of time they don’t have babysitters. That’s another thing that holds them back.” Blige said she’s committed to making sure women can get the help they need through her foundation. “From mothers to daughters to aunts, black, white, it doesn’t matter who you are: If you need help, the Mary J. Blige Center for Women is here,” she said. “It’s starting small, but we’re going to get bigger. When you’re educated, you’re confident. You know what you’re speaking about. You know who you are.” When Blige was a kid, she said, getting an education wasn’t the hip thing to do, so she didn’t think she could seek that out. “When I was growing up, it wasn’t cool to be educated, so I fell into that slump,” she explained. “When you’re in a peer-pressure situation where you’re forced to do what everyone else does to survive, then you end up like I did.” Blige told MTV News that kids now understand that education is vital to their success. “I look at this generation and anyone who doesn’t have an opportunity to finish or to get that education or have the confidence they need to get out and go out and get the jobs they want, I look at them like they’re as my children,” she said. “And I always want my children to have a better opportunity than I had. That’s why I’m going so hard to get them to college. “I take everyone on a journey of why this movement is so important, why the Mary J. Blige movement is so important to me,” Blige added. “I’ve done nothing but given back. My fans are loyal to me because of the journey that we’ve taken together.” As an adult, Blige said she has a very different philosophy in her own life. “I strive to be educated, to grow older gracefully, be happy and comfortable with myself,” she said. “And to have helped more women with my walk — not with what I’m saying but what they’re seeing.” What do you think of Blige’s commitment to helping young women? Drake’s Music ‘Doesn’t Really Call For’ Lil Wayne-Type Energy

‘It’s more about me connecting with the audience,’ MC says about being more laid-back onstage. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News Drake has thankfully recovered from last year’s knee injury — the 23-year-old Toronto native has been onstage all this week performing as part of his Away From Home Tour . “I had an assessment a week ago,” Drake told MTV News last week. “They told me that I’m definitely able to get out there and perform to the fullest. I’m still not going to be able to play basketball. I’m gonna stay far away from that, actually. But I’m ready to come back. I think I’m coming back with more maturity as far as connecting with the audience and less about running around. A lot of my performance energy before came from watching Lil Wayne. I always felt I needed to be just as energetic, running back and forth on the stage. In preparing for this tour, I realized my brand of music doesn’t really call for that. It’s more about me connecting with the audience and them enjoying the way we flip these songs around. I want them to walk away and be like, ‘That was a great night.’ ” Drizzy has openers Francis and the Lights and K-OS on the road with him. “I chose these acts with Oliver who works with me,” he explained. “They’re on the tour because they’re who I’m a fan of. I know I could have brought out other younger artists or rappers, but I want this to be an experience. I want them to be refreshed about music. Not like, ‘Oh, I went to another rap show.’ ” What do you think of Drake’s live show? Let us know in the comments below! T.I. Is ‘In A Zone,’ The-Dream Says

The Atlanta MC is ‘rapping like he’s in space,’ singer tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez with reporting by Shaheem Reid The-Dream Photo: MTV News The recently freed T.I. said his next album (due August 24) will be more about “feelings” than his last project, Paper Trail, which he described as driven by “thoughts.” The Atlanta rapper has said fans can expect “classic T.I.” The-Dream , who sought out Tip for a collaboration on his forthcoming album, agreed with that early assessment, telling MTV News that T.I.’s skills are otherworldly right now. “Tip is in a zone, man,” said The-Dream, whose second single, “Sex Intelligent,” will feature T.I. “He’s in one of those things. But me just being a lyric guy, what makes songs, I think, hits is when it comes from the heart and you really are saying something you mean. And you can feel it through the passion. “Every record he played me, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I could just feel it. It wasn’t about judging it. It wasn’t about, ‘Is this a single or is this that?’ It was just, ‘Wow, where have you been? Where’d you go?’ It was just elevated, and he’s elevated. Right now, he’s rapping like he’s in space. Not a place we don’t know — it’s in the same area — but his vibe is just wider now.” While Tip is hard at work on his yet-untitled comeback album, last month he released “I’m Back,” the first track he’s delivered to the public since beginning a federal prison stint last May on charges stemming from a 2007 arrest. Recently sprung a couple months shy of his yearlong sentence, the rapper is serving out the remaining months under home confinement. T.I. has been mostly quiet since his release in December, with the exception of a brief conference call with a group of DJs (though he declined to take questions) and a video interview he posted on his Web site, TrapMuzik.com . Dr. Dre Announces Jay-Z Collabo, ‘Under Pressure’

Rapper and Interscope head Jimmy Iovine confirm the new track at Boston Red Sox game. By Shaheem Reid Jay-Z and Dr. Dre Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Could Detox really be around the corner? The long-awaited, almost mythical album by music legend Dr. Dre sounds like it is officially starting up. Last week, E! News correspondent Michael Yo tweeted that Dre and Jay-Z had a new single coming that Interscope was very excited about, and a photo of the two timeless hip-hop kings in the studio surfaced on the Net. Then on Sunday night, during the Red Sox’s opening night at Fenway Park in Boston, Dre confirmed the new song and revealed the title. The Doc and Interscope head Jimmy Iovine participated in a little batting practice, promoted the Sox-themed Beats by Dr. Dre headphones and spoke briefly about the new single, “Under Pressure,” to sports network NESN . When reporter Heidi Watney asked what his at-bat song would be, Iovine responded, “The new song Dre has in his pocket, called ‘Under Pressure.’ It’s a brand new single by Dr. Dre and Jay-Z. That’s the song I would use.” (At press time, a release date for the song had not been announced.) “Absolutely, that would be it,” agreed Dre, who told MTV News back in October Jay had been writing something for Detox. ” ‘Under Pressure.’ It’s so fitting.” When Dre was asked who from the Red Sox he would want to use “Under Pressure” as their at-bat theme, the production great said it wasn’t even a question: David Ortiz. “Absolutely, Big Papi.” And how are Dre’s hitting skills? Doc, who wore a Red Sox jersey with the number “808” on it, told Watney that he would be OK, though he was “a little bit nervous.” “I was cool until I walked on the field,” he said. “Now, it’s a little intimidating. I played a little bit as a kid. But I did go the batting cage a couple of times before today, so I’ll think I’ll be all right.” Are you still eagerly awaiting Dr. Dre’s Detox ? Eminem’s New Music Will ‘Surprise A Lot Of People,’ Just Blaze Says

Producer also talks about the possibility of reuniting with Jay-Z. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Adam Stewart and Akshay Bhansali Eminem Photo: Universal It seems like the only time Just Blaze isn’t in the sky these days is when he’s working. Blaze has been DJing at places like the Winter Music Conference when he isn’t busy traveling back and forth and producing for people such as Jay Electronica and Eminem . “I’m working on Eminem’s album still, so I’ve gotta hurry up and get back to Detroit,” Just said. He was fresh off the turntables at club Grand Central during the Fool’s Gold party in Miami, where he spun a two-hour house set. “I’ve been back and forth — Detroit, New York, Detroit, New York, Miami, back to Detroit — for like the past two and a half weeks. [The album], it’s getting there, but we still got a lot of work. So I wish I could stay [in Miami] longer.” Blaze says he’s sworn not to reveal too much about Eminem’s album, but he’s already calling it a classic, one of the ultimate efforts in Slim Shady’s storied catalog. “As far as what’s going on in Detroit, a lot of good music is being made,” Blaze said of Em. “He’s really back spitting. The wordplay is crazy, the metaphors are crazy. He’s really back on his game. He had his ups, he had his downs, he’s back way, way, way up. This is definitely going to be up there with the best of his albums, for sure, for sure. The fact that he’s branched out working with a lot of different people now, collaborating in a lot of different ways that he never has before, I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people.” Other than Em, Blaze has Jay Electronica on his plate, but what about the super-producer linking back with the other Jay, as in Young Hova? Just says he talked to the Jiggaman right before the U.S. leg of the Blueprint 3 tour ended. “Maybe,” he answered with a sly grin about whether or not he and rap’s G.O.A.T. would collaborate again. “You never know.” Related Artists Eminem

Lil Wayne Not Involved In Weekend Brawl, Rikers Island Source Says

Source says Wayne is doing ‘well’ in jail. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News From all indications, Lil Wayne is doing fine in prison. He began his sentence on March 8 and arrived at Rikers Island later that day, and last week, his friend and associate Mack Maine posted a message on Twitter saying: “Jus left Rikers Island … Spoke wit Wayne for 2hrs … He’s good. Told me to tell y’all wadup … Special website komin soon … #thank God … LUV.” On Monday (March 29), a source inside Rikers Island who asked that his name not be made public gave MTV News some observations about how Wayne is holding up. “He’s doing well. He’s adapting to the situation,” the source said, adding that Wayne was not involved in a brawl that took place at the facility over the weekend in which 13 officers and three inmates were injured, according to New York’s Daily News . The incident reportedly occurred after inmates refused to be locked in for the night, and did not take place in the area of the facility where Wayne is being held. The source also scotched a rumor that Wayne got into a confrontation with another inmate just days after his sentencing. “That’s a rumor I heard, but nothing substantiated,” the source said, adding that Wayne is usually in protective custody and, for the most part, has been getting a positive reaction from inmates. However, the source said that some inmates seem not to be aware of his situation. “While he’s walking the hallways, he’s told not to communicate with these guys,” the source explained. “So they’re a bit disgruntled because he’s not hollering back.” Wayne was sentenced to a year in prison on gun-possession charges and could be released after serving eight months , assuming good behavior. Usher Dicusses Racy Lyrics On ‘Lil Freak’: ‘It Happens’

Singer says latest single was inspired by real-life experiences. By Shaheem Reid Usher Photo: MTV News It’s not just lyrics — Usher said that when he sang about asking girls to get him girls on the track “Lil Freak,” he wasn’t just entertaining. The song was inspired by real life. “Yeah,” he laughed when asked if he gets female friends to scout and bring him other females to engage in group fun. “I mean, I wrote about it,” he continued. “It happens in this day and time. Those are the best chicks to be friends with, honestly.” “Hey girl, I see you like that,” he sings on the track. “You gettin’ excited/ You rockin’ like a pro with it, girl/ By the way, you got right on that/ Picked the chick you wanted/ And now you in the corner kissin’ on a girl/ I’m about to have a minaj with these here ladies/ Look at those freaks at the bar looking for a star.” The video for “Lil Freak” recently premiered and in the clip Nicki Minaj, rocks a sexy Cruella DeVil hairstyle — half black, half blond. She helps lure a woman into Usher’s underground playground. “The video is freaky,” Nicki told MTV News recently about the six-minute-plus video. “And it’s a great concept, a great story line. It felt just like one of the sequels to ‘Saw.’ It was dope.” “Lil Freak” along with the singles “Papers” and “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” are on Usher’s upcoming Raymond v. Raymond, in stores March 30.
