The-Dream Says Just-Leaked ‘Sex Intelligent’ Is ‘Smash Time’

Song is set to feature T.I., but his vocals weren’t on the leaked track. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Shaheem Reid The-Dream Photo: MTV News A mind is a terrible thing to waste, especially if those smarts are only used in the boardroom and not the bedroom, according to The-Dream. An uncompleted version of the Atlanta songwriter’s “Sex Intelligent” arrived on various websites over the weekend. The song is scheduled to feature T.I., but his vocals weren’t attached to the leaked track. In March, The-Dream talked with MTV News about “Sex Intelligent” and said the song is about men and women being in tune with each other’s desires. ” ‘Sex Intelligent’ is just about knowing what you’re doing when you’re in the bedroom,” he said. “Not only in the bedroom, but mentally knowing what somebody likes. And that’s another one of those harmony-driven ’90s type of records, but, of course, updated to fit my fans, specifically. I think people like to hear good-sounding records when they close the doors. We talked about this before, what people wanna hear in their cars on the way to work and what they wanna hear when they light the candles. It’s a different feeling, and if I can provide it. I’ll try my best. And this is one of those records. It’s smash time. Hit the lights and make sure the bed is ready to be imploded.” “Sex Intelligent” follows the lead offering and title track “Love King” and the slated second single “Make Up Bag,” also featuring T.I. The-Dream has been locked in the studio with T.I. lately, for his own album and the rapper’s forthcoming project, both set for summer releases. “Every record he played me, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I could just feel it,” The-Dream said of Tip . “It wasn’t about judging it. It wasn’t about, ‘Is this a single or is this, that?’ It was just, ‘Wow, where have you been? Where’d you go?’ It was just elevated, and he’s elevated. Right now, he’s rapping like he’s in space. Not a place we don’t know — it’s in the same area — but his vibe is just wider now.” What do you think about The-Dream’s “Sex Intelligent”? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists The-Dream

Nas Says His Queensbridge ‘Hood Supports L.A. Laker Ron Artest

‘We are rooting for Ron all day long,’ rapper says of fellow Queens native. By Shaheem Reid Nas Photo: MTV News He’s so ‘hood, and his fans love for it: During halftime of the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Phoenix Suns Western Conference Finals game on Wednesday night, Laker Ron Artest told TNT, “We gotta play hard, like I played in the Queensbridge projects.” Fellow QB projects native Nas said he fully supports the man nicknamed Ron Ron, as does everyone from his neighborhood. “When I tell you man, the amount of love for Ron Artest, how insane it is from my ‘hood, from Queensbridge, it is a beautiful thing,” Nas told MTV News. “We all root for Ron. We’re all supporting Ron. I wasn’t with the Lakers before [they signed Ron]. I’m with the Lakers now for that. I love him. He plays a great part in the team. We are rooting for Ron all day long.” Artest had a breakout game on Wednesday, the second game of the series. The 30-year-old, who has a reputation for being a defensive specialist, had five rebounds and 18 points. “He just had to settle in and play like he’s used to playing,” Lakers star Kobe Bryant told ESPN . Artest, still in full uniform and standing in the middle of the locker room, said, “It’s about that time now. It’s about that time to just play, play basketball. “For some reason, you do things and they work and you go again to it,” Artest told the network. “Sometimes you sleep on the left side of the bed and wake up on the right, and when you go to sleep on the right and wake up on the left, your whole day is messed up. I just wanted to go back and sleep on the left side of the bed and wake up on the right.” The Lakers won 124-112 over the Suns and lead the series two games to none. Related Artists Nas

Lloyd Drops ‘Set Me Free’ Video, Featuring Mystikal

Clip is Mystikal’s first video appearance in nearly a decade. By Shaheem Reid Mystikal in “Set Me Free” Photo: MTV News One of Interscope Records’ newest signings, former Murder Inc. singer Lloyd, debuted the video for his new single “Set Me Free” over the weekend. The video features the first time we see the song’s costar, Mystikal, in a new video in close to a decade — the MC was released from prison earlier this year after serving a six-year bid for sexual battery and extortion. The two shot scenes throughout their hometown of New Orleans, including the Calliope projects (officially known as the B.W. Cooper Apartments), which has spawned several rap luminaries including Master P, C-Murder and Silkk the Shocker. “The stars are aligning in 2010. It’s a year of new beginnings … him being released from prison, me getting free from The Inc.,” Lloyd said to MTV News via e-mail. ” ‘Set Me Free’ is so much more than a song to us; it’s our reality. Like Mystikal says, ‘I’m back on the beach, muscle up, bitch!’ ” The video is mostly performance in the streets, with plenty of people in the neighborhood coming out to support the duo. We also see them rapping and singing supported by a band. “The track has that ‘second line’/brass band sound that you can only get back home in New Orleans,” Lloyd, who now lives in Atlanta, explained. “I never made a song that repped for my birth city, and when I wrote the record I had only one person in mind. I wanted to make it authentic, so I went back home during Marti Gras. Me and Mystikal got in the studio, and we knocked it out. The energy was crazy! And as you can see, he hasn’t lost a step. Wild Wayne of Q93 [in] New Orleans and Greg Street of V103 [in] Atlanta help bring the collaboration together. It was a blessing to work with a legend that I’ve admired for years.” Related Artists Mystikal

Lil Wayne Could Serve More Time Because Of MP3 Player In His Cell

‘You lose some ‘good time,’ ‘ our source at Rikers Island says of contraband found in Wayne’s cell. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway and Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: Derrick G A source at Rikers Island confirmed reports that Lil Wayne was busted Monday for having headphones, a charger and a watch that doubles as an MP3 player in his jail cell. The offense isn’t extremely serious, but it could mean more prison time for Wayne. “You just get an infraction, a violation,” the source told MTV News. “You lose some ‘good time.’ “It depends on the severity of the infraction,” the source added about what other type of trouble Weezy could get into. “Level one is the worst. Then you have [level] two or three. [This infraction] could be a level one. He has to go on trial, and based on evidence, they’ll make their determination.” Our source also confirmed that Wayne has a job as a suicide-prevention aid, which entails staying up at night to keep an eye on at-risk inmates. “He checks each cell or area to see if each guy is alive. There are three shifts,” our source said. “I think his shift is at night, like 11 [p.m.] to 7 [a.m.] or 12 to 8.” That job is now in jeopardy due to the infraction. In 2007, Lil Wayne was arrested for attempted gun possession following his first headlining performance in Manhattan at the Beacon Theatre. New York is among the toughest states in the country when it comes to gun-possession laws. In other states, Lil Wayne could have gotten off with a misdemeanor rap and probation. However, in New York, only law-enforcement officials and those affiliated with authorities are permitted to carry firearms. The rapper was sentenced to a year in prison in March. Gucci Mane Says Warm Post-Prison Reception ‘Strengthens’ Him

‘I feel like I got a whole new beginning,’ the rapper tells Atlanta DJ Frank Ski morning after his release. By Shaheem Reid Gucci Mane Photo: Warner Bros. The “Welcome Home Gucci Mane” campaign is in full swing. On Wednesday night, Gucci’s good friends Shawty Lo and DJ Holiday were waiting at the Fulton County Jail to greet him upon his release. On Wednesday night, a host of other Gucci supporters gathered at the Georgian Terrace hotel in Atlanta for a dinner honoring the ATL street heavyweight. Monica, the Diplomats’ Chubbie Baby, Big Boi, Wale, Kandi Burruss, Jazze Pha, DJ Drama and L.A.D., Sean Garrett, Waka Flocka Flame and, of course, Lo and Holiday all came out to show love. Gucci LaFlare was a guest on the DJ Frank Ski V103 morning show on Thursday (May 13), where he reflected on the previous night’s festivities. “It makes me feel good. It strengthens me even more,” the Atlanta rapper said. While on-air, Gucci also revealed that his next album, The State vs. Radric Davis: The Appeal, is due out at the end of August. He told listeners that he would want to work with Andre 3000 and Jamie Foxx on this follow-up to his December ’09 project. When asked how jarring it was for him to go to prison last year, right before the release of The State vs. Radric Davis — an album that had the potential to be his superstar-making effort — Gucci said knowing some months earlier that he was going in made it somewhat easier. “It was little behind the scenes things that everybody didn’t know,” Gucci explained to Ski. “They had a warrant for my arrest about four or five months before I even went in. So I was already dealing with it. I was trying to do all I could in case I did go to jail, so I could keep it going. “I feel like I got a whole new beginning, like my career just started again,” he added. Gucci Mane Welcomed Back By Shawty Lo And DJ Holiday At Atlanta Jail

‘It’s about friendship and being a man and holding your man down,’ Holiday tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid Gucci Mane at his press conference in Atlanta on Tuesday Photo: Moses Robinson/ Getty Images ATLANTA — When Gucci Mane was minutes away from ending his six-month bid behind bars , two of his close friends and musical collaborators — Shawty Lo and DJ Holiday — were there. “We waiting for my boy Gucci to come out of jail,” Shawty said with a big grin on his face. “We at the Fulton County Jail, right off of Bankhead. It’s a beautiful day. I got my boy DJ Holiday with me, first on sight. It’s about to go down, man.” “MTV, I told you we was gonna be here, baby,” Holiday said. “It feels good to be here,” Lo continued. “It’s finnin’ to be a very long summer. So MTV, y’all stay tuned. MTV, let’s get it.” Lo and Gucci’s friendship is based on many things, but they definitely have run-ins with the law in common. Shawty said he can relate to Gucci’s struggles in music and with the police. “Basically, me and Gucci, when my career started and Gucci’s career started, we was in the struggle. We was blackballed,” Lo said. “So me and Gucci, we feel like we’re brothers from a different mother. Just to be here, man, it feels good to be here. I been arrested 28 times, and I been convicted four times, so I know how it feels. The hip-hop police got it in [for us]. But at the end of the day, I’m here, thick or thin.” Holiday said that his and Lo’s support is genuine and not for publicity. “I ain’t about getting that look. We’re brothers,” the ATL mixtape king said. Holiday is also signed to Gucci’s label, 1017 Brick Squad. “We family. It’s bigger than that rap stuff. We had to be here. Lo had to be here. I had to be here. I ain’t about that. It’s about friendship and being a man and holding your man down. So if you got anybody down right now, make sure you the first person they see [when they get out] if you really holding them down.” Lo said he’s looking forward to more of his MC friends to come home as well. “We waiting on Weezy and Boosie too,” Shawty said. “Let’s get it.” Related Artists Gucci Mane Shawty Lo DJ Holiday

Freddie Gibbs’ ‘Ghetto’ Video Shows The ‘Real’ Gary, Indiana

‘It was just me interacting with the people in my city,’ Gibbs said of new video. By Shaheem Reid By now, Freddie Gibbs is very familiar with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. He’s in Los Angeles quite often to conduct business. But when it came to showing his hometown of Gary, Indiana, to the world in his new video for “The Ghetto,” which premiered on Monday, the lanky newcomer says gloss was not an option. “The making of the video was easy, like a documentary or something,” Freddie told MTV News Tuesday (May 11). “It was just me interacting with the people in my city. A lot of people didn’t really know what Gary looked like. They just knew the Jacksons were from there. People are glad that I came with a video showing real sh– and not some made-up party scene or a car show. I gave ’em what’s true to me.” Back in January, Gibbs described the lack of opportunities in Gary , especially for an aspiring rapper. He said he felt he could open doors for others with the launch of his career. “A lot of people in Gary work hard to try and get out,” he said. “It’s a depressed city, a depressed economy. It’s still my home. I still live there. I got family, friends there. I feel like me putting this street music out, it’s gonna shed some light on the bad parts so maybe they can be fixed. Plus, it’s no music scene in Gary — we don’t even have our own radio situation. Everything we got is up under Chicago. I gotta go and create the scene. Being the first dude to come out the city in the rap game is a lot of pressure. For one, people hear Gary, Indiana, and think I’m some hick from the farm. But I’m from the bricks. This is the ghetto. This ain’t no cornfield.” Gibbs’ video was directed by Brandon “n2ition” Riley. “The Ghetto” is off of the new mixtape Str8 Killa No Filla, which drops in mid-June.

Dame Dash Contemplates Bringing Diplomats Back To Roc-A-Fella

With Cam’ron and Jim Jones’ recent fence-mending, Dash says it could be great under the right circumstances. By Shaheem Reid Dame Dash Photo: MTV News In Mixtape Daily on Monday, Dame Dash announced that he’s relaunching Roc-A-Fella Records , with his first release being Curren$y’s Pilot Talk which is due June 15. Dash also has plans to put out Ski Beatz 24-Hour Karate School mixtape on the label as well. But what about bringing back a team that was affiliated with the Roc in their prime? Now that Cam’ron and Jim Jones are back on speaking terms and planning to release music together, would Dash bring the Diplomats back to Roc-A-Fella? “Um, under the right circumstances,” Dash answered. “As long as everyone is happy, as long as the quality of living is never compromised, as long as everyone is on the same sheet of paper — of course. It’d be great. Anything is great under the right circumstances but a dream could become a nightmare when everyone doesn’t have the same agendas. That’s just a general statement.” Dash said that with Jim and Cam reuniting — at least personally, so far — the duo have set a great example for the music industry. He suggested that that maybe he and Jay-Z should have followed a similar route. “I’m more happy than anything that they’re friends — that they were able to salvage their friendship, if that’s the case,” Dame said. “I think they’re better than me for that: being smart enough and humble enough to apologize to each other and move forward. I really do hope that where I failed to be the right example, that they can be that. You always want the people ahead of you to do better than you anyway. For that, I gotta give them props for being men above anything.” Related Artists The Diplomats Dame Dash

Rick Ross, Monica Join Atlanta’s Birthday Bash Lineup

Plies, Ludacris already announced for Hot 107.9’s show on June 19. By Shaheem Reid Monica Photo: J Records Hot 107.9 in Atlanta continued to announce names for their annual Birthday Bash concert , taking place on June 19. A couple of weeks ago, the station trumpeted the names of Plies and Ludacris as their initial two performers — and on Thursday (April 29), a couple of more names on the roster were revealed. Holding it down for Miami will be Rick Ross, and bringing the hometown heat onstage will be A-Town’s own Monica. Ross is heavily in the process of promoting his forthcoming LP Teflon Don, while Monica basking in the success of her Still Standing LP , which debuted at #2 on the Billboard albums chart earlier this month. “It’s weird to me that people don’t recognize there’s room for new and old,” Monica said of those who were surprised by the album’s success. “For me, it was really weird because I’m 29 years old. To be written off by some was really mind boggling. I think that the album title has a lot to do with what was happening right now, even though that’s not the way I initially meant it. When I said ‘Still Standing,’ I meant personally — just being victorious and talking about personal triumphs, so it motivates the next person that might be going through it. After some of the things I read when I would say my album is coming — and you would have negative feedback — it felt so strange to me because I’m so young and have so much ahead of me.” The Birthday Bash Concert is set for June 19 at Atlanta’s Philips Arena. More names will be announced in the coming weeks. Related Photos Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Mary J. Rick Ross Explains Why He Wanted Diddy To Manage Him

‘The experience and the knowledge that Diddy possesses is priceless,’ he tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Kelly Marino Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Rick Ross said a night of hanging out with Diddy and the Ciroc Boys inspired the opening lines of his “Super High” record : “From my n—a Diddy view, I think I see his vision too/ ‘Purple Rain,’ over Central Park, chillin’ with my goons.” Ross, Diddy and a few friends were watching Prince’s “Purple Rain” in the mogul’s New York penthouse when he was inspired to write the lyrics. Ross’ friendship with the founder of Bad Boy Records blossomed into a business relationship. Diddy is now a part of the Bawse’s management team. “The experience and the knowledge that Diddy possesses is priceless,” Ross explained on the set of his upcoming video for “Super High.” “The relationships that he’s accumulated over the last 20 years is priceless for a young artist such as myself. We developed a mutual friendship. We just stayed in contact. I was calling him for advice anyway. He was doing it for free: ‘What you think about that, homey? Help me get this, homey. I need to meet for the Waka Flocka video, homey.’ He was doing so many different things for me on that level.” Ross said since he has officially aligned with Diddy, he has put a few things on the agenda. “I expressed my interest in developing and designing my own clothing label,” Ricky Ros
